Reader XI (11.0.07) crashes IE 10/11 intermittently when displaying PDFs

We recently upgraded all of our workstations firmwide from Reader X to Reader XI (11.0.07 as noted in title).  WIN7 64-bit.
We are now seeing problems with some (but not all) users when they display PDFs in IE (Adobe Reader PDF plugin enabled in IE); the browser crashes - not necessarily when the first PDF is clicked on.  I can trigger the error by going to a site such as irs.gov, clicking on a link to open a PDF, hitting the back button my browser and then opening another PDF.  After a few cycles of this the browser will crash.  This was definitely not a problem for us with Reader X.
Here's a screenshot of the error.
Some things that I've tried which have not fixed this on a representative workstation:
Set Reader XI to Protected Mode.
Launch IE in "No add-ons" mode.
Disable 3rd party extensions in IE.
Uninstall and reinstall Reader from our SCCM utility.
Repair Reader from control panel or Reader | Help.
Restart workstation.
Flush temp files from machine (Windows temp files, IE cache, etc).
Reset IE advanced settings and restore defaults.
Disable & re-enable the Adobe Reader PDF plugin in IE.
As noted, not all users have this problem.  Based on a small sample it could be as high as 50% of people.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Try disabling Protected Mode in Adobe Reader [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].

  • AR 9.X Crashing IE (6 and 7)  when opening PDF with sw:iexplore - Application Error

The majority of my systems are having a problem with Acrobat Reader 9.0 and 9.1.
When they click on a PDF from within IE the browser crashes with the following error:
    sw: iexplore.exe - Application Error
The instruction at '0x051251b6" referenced memory at '0x00000010". The memory could not be "read".
Running AR 8 causes no difficulty, however I have an organizational requirement to have addressed the in-the-wild vulnerability of AR by March 18th for 100% of my client systems. And Adobe is holding on to those versions until the 18th.
So I _have_ to install 9.1 on 300 systems in the next 36 hours.
If I take the check mark out of 'Display PDF in Browser' it works fine. The problem with this solution is that there are certain web sites and applications that departments here use which absolutely requires that the PDF be integrated within the browser - so taking Display PDF in Browser is not a universal solution.
I have tried the following key to no luck:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat\Exe]
    @="\"C:\\Program Files\\Adobe\\Reader 9.0\\Reader\\AcroRd32.exe\""
On a couple of machines opening up Reader and closing it first while having admin rights clears up the problem - but not for the majority of my systems.
I've tried repairs, reinstalls, full reloads and reboots to very little luck.
It's is for various PDF files from different sites, and it's the same ones that work for the small number of systems not experiencing a problem.
    Any suggestions would be welcome.

The 18th is tomorrow, so why not wait for it?

  • Very strange crash when displaying pdf tumbnails in iBooks 1.5

    Hi,
Recently, I have experienced a very strange behavior in iBooks. The app opened normally and then, some seconds later, dispaly getts blak and the app closes abruptly.
I have traced back this behavior: It occurs just when the cover tumbnail of some pdf books is displayed in any iBooks' library view (both in bookshelf view and in Title view)
I removed the troubesome pdf, but found that some others ( wich worked fine fron a lot of time ago) produce just the same behavior.
When (using the painfully method of trial, and l, and trial again! And again,... )  i finally deleted all the crash - related pdf's, iBooks worked fine again.
The most intriging features related this behavior are: 1- It is related only with tumbnails. All the pdf are normally vieved using some other ipad psdf viever (such as Kdan Pdf Reader or Adobe Reader for ipad) 2- If yoy remove the cover as pdf first page ( even if you move such cover and put it as the second page, using software like pdf sam) the pdf works fine in iBooks.
I suppose this is a (annoying) bug, but,is there any suggestion? Is there any way to disable The tumbnail feature in iBooks?
    Best regards

Somehow this bug came up on my radar yesterday later in the day: the first two comments indicate different plugins, and the third refers to the Acrobat plugin:
<blockquote>This seems to happen if Adobe Reader is used for displaying PDF documents (pdfjs.disabled set to true and Preferences > Applications > PDF to "Adobe Reader (in Firefox)").<br><br>Opening two tabs displaying PDFs and closing one crashes the other one.<br><br>Was able to reproduce with Firefox 36.0.1 and Adobe Reader plugin "Adobe Acrobat 11.0.10.32". When I tried to reproduce it later again in the same profile (or on Nightly and Beta), the tab didn't crash.</blockquote>
    https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1113190
Sounds like your issue, but it's puzzling that they got a tab to crash and in your case only plugin-container.exe crashed.

  • Jagged text when displaying PDF in Acrobat or Reader, not Preview

when viewing PDFs inside Acrobat 9 or Reader X, most fonts appear jagged, whereas they look perfect in Preview.  this problem persists, even at even resolutions like 100%, 150%, 200%, and 400%.  everything looks great when printed from Acrobat, Reader, or Preview, or when viewed at Preview.  not all fonts are impacted, i.e. text in some fonts looks great, but many fonts look jagged.
this problem is occurring on both iMac 24" (OS X 10.6) and MacBook Air 13".
any advice on how to correct this?
    thanks!

Try either using a utility such as FontNuke to remove font caches. Or Restart in safe mode, this dumps all caches even Font Caches. Then restart computer and try Acrobat.
In Office 2001 there is a real bad problem with having two versions of the same fonts causing problemss. Perhaps Acrobat has the same issues.
To see if this is a problem Try the fiollowing:
Do something such as above to dump Font caches.
Next, open Fontbook and locate and choose Resovle Conflicts.
Run Resolve conflicts, after Conflicts have found open each font that indicates a conflict.
click on get information see which is the newest.
Now disable the oldest version whether its installed by the system or by Adobe.
After all conflicts are worked through,  Quit fontbook.
Now go to both Main Library > Disabled Fonts & User Library > Disabled Fonts, remove to desktop.
now select all the fonts moved to desktop and archive them using either Create Archive  from Finder, or Stuffit Deluxe.
Remove the fonts either a CD/DVD  store the archived files.
Put originals in Trash and empty.
    Now Try Acrobat.

  • Acrobat Pro 8.1.2 crashes when displaying pdf made from Word doc containing url text

    Hello,
I and a few others in my workplace have a similar issue.
Acrobat crashes when they scroll through and view a pdf file that was created from Word.  The Word document contains url text in its header to the effect of "visit us at www.blah.com ." They're running Acrobat Pro 8.1.2 and Office 2K Pro SR-1 on XP Pro SP2.
Even though the link is not an active link, (i.e. clicking on it does not open the web page), if I convert a document containing this header to PDF, Acrobat will not allow me to manipulate the file and will crash. When I take the same document and remove the web address, then convert from Word to PDF, I experience no problems with Acrobat (note that this is the identical file, but with the web address removed). This does not explain why Acrobat will work for awhile even with the web address in the header, then stop working. But it does appear to fix my problem with creating a PDF from Word, then manipulating it further.
Does anyone know how to allow for this text to exist in the header and still have a stable pdf file/acrobat behavior?
    The pdf is attached.
    Thanks....

To sum up, I've found that if a url beginning with www is in the Word document and then created to pdf Adobe will crash when viewing that pdf.  If it is deleted from the Word document before creating the pdf, Acrobat will not crash when viewing that pdf.

  • Adobe Reader plugin on Intel iMac... menu bar gone when viewing pdf?!?!?

I had Adobe Reader 7.0.5 on my iMac G5 and when I clicked on a pdf file, it opened in a new window with a menu bar at the top. Since migrating to my Intel iMac yesterday, the menu bar is gone though pdf pages display... just with blank space where the menu used to be. I downloaded v7.0.8 and installed and the same problem. I have the prefs set to view pdf files in Safari and, again, they view... just no menu bar! Any idea how to fix this?

As far as I know, Adobe Reader (even v7.0.8) isn't Universal yet, which means it [the plugin] probably won't run natively on your Intel iMac unless you run Safari under Rosetta.

  • I usually have 3-4 tabs open which I am saving to read later. But I loose them all the time when firefox crashes or when another appliaction opens firefox to download. Is there a way to save my tabs ?

I usually have 3-4 tabs open which I am saving to read later. But I loose them all the time when firefox crashes or when another appliaction opens firefox to download something and it will discard all my tabs. This is incredibly annoying, is there a way to save my tabs ? or get them back when there is no "restore session" button ?

In Firefox Options / Privacy be sure "Remember download history" is checked. To see all of the options on that panel, "Firefox will" must be set to "Use custom settings for history".
To find your OS information, on your Windows desktop, right-click the My Computer icon, choose Properties, under System on that small window is info about your OS.

Does the regular Firefox 8 release version work or does the version crash as well?
    *Firefox 8.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • Adobe Reader 8.1.2 (admplugin.apl) crash when opening PDF files

    Hi,
I did spend some time today trying to get Adobe Reader 8.1.2 to run on a Citrix Access Essential 2.0 server.
    Setup
    Server OS:
    Windows Server 2003 SP2 - fully patched.
    Other software:
    Office 2003 Standard, Danish, SP3
    Symantec Antivirus 10.1
    Adobe Reader 8.1.2, Danish
The installation is clean (1 week old).
    Problem description:
When opening PDF files, Adobe Reader crashes before showing any content from the PDF file. The module crashing is admplugin.apl.
    Work-arounds tried:
Uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe Reader 8.1.2 (DK).
    Disabling Antivirus (service stopped)
Replacing admplugin.apl with admplugin.apl from Adobe Reader 8.0
Uninstalling DK version and installing US version.
Adding user to local Administrators to exclude any permission related problems.
Deleting Adobe folders from users profile Application Data\Adobe\... and Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\...
    Turn DEP off
    Solution:
Finally I gave up and installed 7.0.9 (Danish). It works as expected.
It seems that the problem is known and a few user has reported this. One Adobe KB article mentions the problem, and the solution is to disable some 3. party diagnostic/support tools provided by DSL providers. This is definitively not the issue in this installation.
Anybody from Adobe having any input to this problem?
    Best regards from Denmark!

    Hi,
I am having a similar issue with Ver 8.1.2 running over cirtix with a similar setup to Jans-Peter.
The difference is that Reader opens fine but when you try to edit preferences it crashes.
This only happens on an citrix session. If I run reader on the server directly it works OK.
However after reading above I can replicate the problem on the server by moving or deleting the ADMPlugin.apl file.
    Any further ideas at all?

Thanks for the link, but installing the flash player and the newer version of the Reader [11.0.02] doesn't help. So I had to reinstall the X version to make things work. I want to make a bug report but the form isn't working either!

  • Adobe Reader 9.x crashes when opening PDF's created using Office 2007

I work on the helpdesk side for a big corporation and many of our users are reporting that when they try to open a PDF, it locks up their Internet Explorer or Reader 9.x
We noticed that the problems were only caused by PDFs that were presentations created in PowerPoint, then saved as a PDF with the Office 2007 Save as PDF plugin. So what we did was engaged an engineer at Microsoft to look into the issue.  They did a lot of troubleshooting and narrowed it down.
They think that if the presentation was created using PP 2003 then opened in PP 2007 then saved as a PDF then this causes AR 9.x to crash.  So what they did was remove the slide number, and added a new slide number using PP 2007, save it as a PDF then it opens in AR 9.x
All other versions of AR can open the PDF under the same scenario.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
    Thanks

It's almost identical to what you posted. I think the difference was that I was trying on a machine with complete install of Acrobat which has the font packs and hence there was no hang/crash. Your file doesn't hang on that machine either.
If you look at the fonts panel in your document: File>Properties>Fonts, you'll notice that it uses MS-PGothic font which is a Japanese fonts, and hence the Japanese font pack might fix this.
Also, since you mentioned ACE.dll, the other possibility might be that there are conflicting DLLs on the system, commonly referred to as DLL Hell. Another thing to try would be to search the system for ACE.dll and see which all software install it.

  • Adobe Reader 9.1 crashes browser when clicking PDF links

    Steps to recreate issue:
    1. With Adobe Reader 9 loaded on your Windows PC...
    2. With ANY browser, go to any url where you can download PDF forms (ex. www.dlis.dla.mil/PDFs/DD2875.pdf  OR  http://www.irs.gov/app/picklist/list/formsInstructions.html and click on any .pdf form)
Results: The browser (whether IE 6, 7, 8 or Firefox, Netscape, etc) will crash.  The support window takes you to a place that informs you it is an Adobe problem.
Expected results: The PDF should be opened and displayed as usual.
Mitigation: It only occurs with Adobe Reader 9.  When I uninstalled Adobe Reader 9, and reinstalled 8.1.3 there was no issue.
    Can I get a witness?
How about a fix for this?
[I also work at government sites where they have lots of .pdfs accessible online.  They cannot open any of them because of this issue with Adobe Reader 9; the browser just crashes and that is the end of that.]

You could try some of these: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/391737
However, sometimes replacing \windows\system32\ace.dll with the adobe one in \program files\adobe ...... reader\ace.dll has been said to work.  Really ugly fix - hopefully someone at Adobe corrects this issue in the future.

  • Adobe Reader 11.2.1 still crashing

We are still having crash issues with Adobe 11.2.1. We are using Android 4.3 operating system. We have been using the same fillable forms since before the last two Adobe Reader updates in April 2014.
These forms were not causing the program to crash before the updates. We have uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Reader multiple times. The forms crash when advancing from fillable box to fillable box, when switching from signature/freehand to fillable box, etc.
We have tried several different forms with the same result. Is there anything else we should try to get Reader working properly?

  • Adobe Reader X 10.1.2 crashing

We have just updated from Reader X 10.0.1 to 10.1.2 to resolve a crashing issue, and everything appeared to be fine, for a day. Now, only 1 of 3 Citrix servers has Adobe Reader X working correctly.
Citrix servers are Win2k3 R2 Enterprise 64 bit, updated to Jan 23 with all MS Updates, however we take Citrix out of the equation by logging onto the server itself and running the reader and it still crashes, seems mostly when selecting Edit->Preferences, (Protected mode is off), other times it crashes attempting to open a file. Could you please check and see if you have the MS patch KB2624667
installed on your Citrix servers? (You can check the same via the Control
Panel > Add/Remove Programs and selecting the checkbox to "Show All

If so, try uninstalling the same and see if it fixes the problem.
