Reader XI % inetrnet preferences
hello i had installed reader XI but i cant see in preferences-internet-display - protect in safe mode.is no longer available??
Hi
The Reader Protected mode setting has moved to the following location in Reader 11.0.
1. Launch Reader
2. Go to Edit->Preferences->Security(Enhanced)
3. You will find an 'Enable Protected Mode at startup' check-box under the 'Sandbox Protections' head. This is the same setting that was available under the 'General' preferences in Reader 10.0.
Thanks!

Any wise wisdom?
Thanks, Chris. The .plist files are almost always preferences. I believe "plist" is short for "property list". It contains a list of keys (configuration options) and settings for each key, similar in some respects to the way the Windows Registry works, except that there is a separate file for each set of settings, instead of a single registry file as in Windows. In this case it's a shared settings file for Mail, but I couldn't tell you anything more about the contents.
You were smart to back it up. Usually .plist files can be deleted without signicant loss, because they will be recreated automatically with default settings. But sometimes they contain important settings that may be hard to set up again, especially if you had help setting up your computer in the first place, or have lost important details that you'd need for setting up an app, such as Mail. But sometimes the settings are trivial, for example the position and size of windows, etc., and do not contain settings you'd care about, which may be in another .plist file or in some other kind of file/database. -
Firefox V30.0
I saw a poss solution to my prob of loosing tab groups when closing firefox It read ". Edit > Preferences > Privacy "I can't find references under the edit menu" so cannot attempt the fix offered?Your System Details list shows that you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize prefs each time Firefox starts.
The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created this file and normally it wouldn't be there.
You can check its content with a plain text editor (right-click: Open with) if you didn't create this file yourself.
The user.js file is read each time Firefox is started and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.
Delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
See also:
App (pinned) tabs and Tab Groups (Panorama) are stored as part of the session data in the sessionstore.js file in the Firefox profile folder.
You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox profile folder that store session data.
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Multiple_profile_files_created
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost and you will have to recreate them (make a note or bookmark them if possible). -
Acrobat 8 crashes - Reading Untagged Document & Preferences Menu
Hey everyone.
I have installed Adobe Acrobat 8 (8.2.1) Standard on my Win 7 (32-bit) laptop. It was working ok for a short while but when I open a PDF I have a pop-up come up "Reading Untagged Document" and the whole program crashes shortly after. Also I have noticed that when I go to the Preferences menu (edit>preferences) the program crashes shortly after the preferences menu displays.THis is a copy of a post by Rich1UK it worked for me. it is a workaround though, not a true solution. i hade the same issue moving from vista 32 to Windows 7 64.
Hey everyone. I have been having trouble with Acrobat 8 Standard on Windows 7 32-bit. Version 8.0.0 worked fine but when I try to update from this version I have had a problem. When I open a PDF I have a ‘reading untagged document' popup window open and shortly after the whole program crashes. If open a PDF document when I hold down the shift key the program works fine. However I have also found that if I choose to run the program as an administrator (permanently as an option) it works fine and it no longer crashes. Don’t ask me why but it seems to work. Maybe this can help someone! -
Adobe Reader X - Clicking Preference Crashes Adobe Reader
I have a system with Windows 7 x64 and Adobe Reader X. Everytime I hit Edit>Preference, Adobe Reader gives and error saying it has stopped working. Does anyone know the fix for this?
I did try to reinistall it, without the cleanup tool, and that didn't work. I installed the OS on a different machine but same model hardware and it still crashes when I click on preference. I then installed Reader on a different set of hardware with the same OS and it works fine. I wouldn't think Reader would look at the hardware or does it?

Adobe Reader X Display Preferences on Terminal
We use both Adobe Reader 9 an 10 on several Terminal Servers. We had performance problems until i found this link in Adobe KB:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/887/cpsid_88761.html
The solution works fine with Adobe Reader 9.
On Terminal Servers where Adobe Reader X is installed there are different Registry Keys. So is there a solition working for Reader X ?Try one of the following:

Adobe Reader 11.0.03 - Edit preferences - Internet settings
Where in Adobe Reader under "Edit - Preferences - Internet settings" do I find "Display PDF in browser"?
Hi Pat
Regrettably your reply did not help at all.
I had previously seen the link you gave me. However it gave no assistance as it provided no link to any of the offered solutions or advice of how to use the advice
Your reply would have been helpful, if you had told me, what it took me another +/- 30 mins to find out, that the link was in V10.
You can now help me by advising why was it removed and what alternate feature V11 uses to achieve the same purpose?

Mail and safari hogging cpu - corrupt preferences?
I am having a major problem when I run Mail or Safari under Mavericks on my iMac - they hog all the CPU making it hard to do other things unless I keep quitting the Mail Web Content or Safari Web Content processes using Activity Monitor. This also has shown up in other discussions on this board and no one seems to have a resolution to the problem. But the curious thing is that I only have the problem on my older iMac, but on my new MacBook Pro that also runs Mavericks, runs Mail with identical settings (and is accessing the same server) and runs Safari with the same bookmarks there is no problem. So the problem must be with something on my iMac that is causing Mail and Safari to keep running these Web Content processes and taking over the CPU.
In the old days I would have assumed it was a corrupt Preferences file and deleted that, but no one has sugggested this. Is this possible? If so, what should be deleted? While everything had been working fine, this morning I installed the latest update to the operating system and I am back with the same problem (although I am only having Mail Web Content hogging the CPU and not Safari Web content this time). I am posting below some information from the log as you suggested (sorry if it is too much but I don't know what you are looking for). Let me know if there is anything else you need. Thanks for the help LInc.

PDF doesn't open up in IE 6.0 with Adobe Reader 8.1.2
Hi All
We have an app that dynamically generates PDF using FOP deployed on JBoss server running on AIX. My machine has IE 6 and Adobe Reader 8.1.2 with browser plug-in installed on Windows XP SP2.
PDF the app generates, doesn't open up within IE using the plug-in. But as I could save the PDF file and then open it using Adobe Reader, I went ahead and unchecked the option "Display PDF in Browser" (under Adobe Reader's Edit->Preferences->Internet). Doing so, opens up the PDF automatically using Adobe Reader instance outside of the browser. Though it works, I would like to avoid having all our users change their settings.
Another strange thing that I noticed is that when I run the app on my local machine with a windows version of JBoss, PDF opens up automatically w/o any issues in IE with Adobe plugin. But if the same code is deployed to the JBoss server on AIX it won't open in IE.
For testing purpose, I tried installing Foxit PDF reader, making it the default and PDF opens up fine under both Windows and AIX instances of JBoss.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Anup AlexHi,
We are also struggling with the same problem after upgrading the portal to NW04s SPS15. It is consuming 2 to 3 min for opening the PDF form in ESS under Travel & Expenses.
We are also with same version of Adobe i.e.8.1.2
Still waiting for the solution,

How to change system preferences programatically, 10.5 issue
I know about the "preferences" api. Like SCPreferencesCreate(NULL, CFSTR("SomeName"), NULL);
and get value and all the rest.
In fact, I know how to read all the preferences.
The problem is changing them. I do not care which one, any of them. You see, these are on "const" or non-mutable. So you are going through a dictionary and want to add a value. So you use CFDictionaryAddValue(..).
On 10.4, this is fine. On 10.5 is crashes with an error (the newer XCode is much nicer) saying I am trying to add a mutable value to a non-mutable collection. So any CFDictionary is non-mutable. I can create a mutable copy, and do whatever I want, but I can't save the changes into the original preferences file because its non-mutable. Now I can of course create a non-mutable value, like a CFArray or whatever, but the CFDictionaryAddValue(..) only takes Mutable items.
This seems to be a catch-22 situation. The problem was this. You would Start with PrefGetValue getting "A", but needing to change "C"
A
--B
----C
So you can get and set A, but it is C that needs to be altered.
I figured it out and it was a solution I kind of suspected, but didn't want to deal with, because what if you wanted something really deep like H or Z or whatever.
What you do is Get A, make a mutable copy of A. Then get B (from mutable A) and make a mutable copy of that, and repeat until you were at the thing you wanted to change. Then you change it, then rebuild the dictionary structure in reverse. SetValue C, then Set mutable B's value to Mutable C's value, then set Mutable A's value to Mutable B's value, and finally use SetPref using Mutable A instead of the original A.
Apparently 10.4 didn't consider the prefs non-mutable so everything had worked, and under 10.5, they are non-mutable and you crash if you try and change it. -
Adobe Reader on Windows 7 64BIT
Hi All
since version 10 (X) of adobe reader our windows 7 64bit machines take an age to open PDF's over 10 seconds for most, regardless of if the file is on the local machine or network
They currently have version 10.1.0 installed.
On all our vista pcs it runs fine and we dont appear to have the issue on our windows 7 32bit machines
Does anyone else have this issue
Does any one know how to fix this issue
Thanks in advance
NeilHi All
Just a quick update
We disabled Antivirus and Antispam and still had the issue
Tried this Go to Edit / preferences / general - the uncheck box "Enable protected mode at startup" This got rid of the lag in opening adobe docs.
Still no good
tried this Open the reader, select Edit, Preferences then select Internet from the Categories. This should display the Web browser options page, untick "Allow speculative downloading in the background". This increased the speed of opening pdfs for me hope it helps.
Still have the issue
The only thing we have found now is if we open Adobe reader first and open all other pdf from the open menu its is fine and fast, we get the issue when we douible click the PDF to open it
cheers -
Acrobat Reader X Disable Protection mode
Hi All,
i need some help with this freaky Acrobat Reader X version.
We have currently ~1000 computers with different old versions of AR (form 6 to 9)
We need to upgrade to 10.0.1 version all PC's
Will use SCCM for distributing the package.
OK... everything here seems good but ... a lot of problems and erros appear.
First we've installed on test group of 10 pc's the AR 10.0.0
all users start complainig that they can't open the pdf's from our file servers.
Solution - bring the patch 10.0.1
After that all users start complaining that they can't print - Windows Error - Acrobat need to be closed !
Solution - Protection mode disabled.
My questions :
1. How can I distribute both the Package of Acrobat and the update together with SCCM
All my tries and reaings failed !!!
i've try different methods and no success
msiexec /i /q \\server\d$\Workstation Baseline\AcrobatReaderX\AcroRead.msi TRANSFORMS="AcroRead.mst" PATCH=\\server\d$\Workstation Baseline\AcrobatReaderX\adbeRdrUpd1001_Tier1.msp
this do not work for me This is in SCCM program
2. How can i disable through Adobe Wizard the Protection Mode ?
I know how to do it manually but is not acceptable this way - i can't communicate with 1000 users to do this manually
I know how to disable it from registry with GPO , but i can't disable it before installation, also i can't disable it on all PC's after installation, because it will take several days to complete for all pc's and this "hole" of some days will stop the work of our end-users.
Any fresh ideia is wellcome. Also any help
Thankshey,
had similar issues with protection mode.
found we can do it 2 ways, 1. via registry entry, or 2. via an ADM.
sorry cannot remember the referenced posts for the fixes below...
we use the adm so that users cannot change it, and so that updates dont reset it.
note that the adm has only a few settings, and i dont know the code for any other settings.
1. - REG method:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\FeatureLockDown]
"bProtectedMode"=dword:00000000
REM: Above line Disables Protected Mode on startup
2. - ADM Template method
please note, just copy and paste into a text file and rename as .adm.
remember that on the last section of the code below, change the "YOUR HEADER HERE" bit to what you want to use to find it in the GPO manager once you add the template.

Quicktime Applets and Adobe Reader don't work in Safari
If I am on a website that requires Quicktime, Adobe Reader or an applet, nothing works. With Quicktime the only thing that appears is the scroll bar with sound but no movie, with Adobe Reader or an applet the only thing that comes up is the logo. I have re-installed the plug-ins but still nothing. I have 3 Mac Pros in my small office and one at home and it is the same on all computers. I have to use Firefox which works great. I am running Leopard 10.5.3.
Any suggestions?
RobI tried Lynda.com and it has a script that causes Flash 9 to run slowly, so I aborted that. Apple.com doesn't play trailers for me, either; it doesn't even show any link is active on the trailers, so that could be a coding issue specific to Safari, as Camino and Firefox don't pose any problem.
Safari has the ability to view PDFs without any plug-ins. You can disable the Acrobat Reader plug-in either by removing it from ~/Library/InternetPlug-Ins, or launching Acrobat Reader, go to Preferences>Internet and uncheck the box labeled "Display PDF in browser using…"; then quit Acrobat Reader and Safari, relaunch and try again.

I have two computers - 1 a MAcBook Pro running CS5, the other a PC on Windows 7 running CS4. IN BOTH CASES I am having trouble processing Raw
photogrpahs, once they have been touched once, the first time I opena file it seems OK. What happens is a notice comes up saying Reading Camera Raw Preferences, and from then on everything runs slowly or not at all. I have tried resetting the preferences and re installing Photoshop CS5 on the Masc - all to no avail.Ah, thanks for that info, Jeff.
It seems possible, ajheddfan50, that you had somehow specified a huge image size in the Custom Crop menu, then the image upon cropping would be upsampled to that huge size.
An overall Photoshop preferences reset would clear such a condition, I think.

Preferences windows doesn't fit on netbook screen
I'm a satisfied netbook user since more that 6 months, I've noticed that several applications are still using windows dimensions way too big for our little 1024x600px screens. The same happens with Adobe Reader and his preferences window.
Hope Adobe will fix this in a later release
