Reader XI not Opening PDF made in Acrobat IX

Both a customer and I just updated to Reader XI and neither of us can open existing PDF documents created in Acrobat IX.
The attached screenshot shows the document opening on my server with Acrobat XI while failing to open with Reader XI on my local machine.
Server is 2012 R2, local machine is Win 8.1.
Is there a converter which can help resolve this issue?

You are correct; both links are 404.  I will report these broken links.
Correct downloads can be found at http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/installation-problems-flash-player-windows.html#mai n-pars_text_4
However, from your screenshot it's clear that you already have the latest Flash Player plugin installed, so this is not the issue here.

Hi:<br /><br />Acrobat 9 Pro can read a .dwg file made by Autocad and turn it into a .pdf.  There are three choices for the pdf standard: none, PDF/A-1b:2005 or PDF/E-1.  I tried all three and in all cases Photoshop 7 complains with:<br /><br />Could not open <file> because it is not the right kind of document.<br /><br />Is there some trick to getting this to work?<br /><br />Have Fun,<br /><br />Brooke Clarke

  • Using Maverick, error message: Adobe Reader could not open '***.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

Receiving error message using current Maverick version: "Adobe Reader could not open '***.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).".  Is fix the same as on previous OS versions?

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print or save PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to do so by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar should appear under the cursor. Click the printer or disk icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
    Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
    Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others—I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • Adobe Reader will not open PDF in browser simple answer.

I just had this problem and was able to work through it with the help of tech support from TD Ameritrade.  The fix is simple so read on.  After uninstalling and reinstalling all things adobe and trying other recommendations on these forums I was stumped.  I called my broker tech section since I couldn't open their reports and we identified what my specific problem was.  For me, and I imagine some of you this will help and prevent a lot of wasted time.
Nothing was wrong with my Adobe Reader.  My problem was that I have a 64 bit operating system and both of my default browsers were 64 bit browsers.  I did not know my internet explorer default browser was the 64 bit one until the technician that assisted me informed me that a recent windows update made all 64 bit systems default to 64 bit internet explorer browsers.  You cannot change that default by choosing between 64 bit and 32 bit, because you can only choose internet explorer.  That explains why my attempts to open with a 32 bit browsers always failed.  I also tried with Firefox thinking it was 32 bit and it failed as well.  The technician informed me Firefox is a 64 bit browser and then it made sense.  I guess the recent Adobe reader update caused a change that no longer allowed my 64 bit system and 64 bit browser to open PDF's through the browser. The technician who assisted me has a 64 bit system and only uses 64 bit browsers and can still open PDF's through those browsers.  That confused us for a while until we realized he had his Adobe updater turned off and therefore had not been exposed yet to the update that originated my problems.
****ANSWER FOR MY PROBLEM*******The quick answer is use Google Chrome or some other 32 bit browser.  If you set a 32 bit browser as your default, the PDF's will open.  You cannot set Internet Explorer 32 bit browser as your default if you have a 64 bit system and also have 64 bit Internet Explorer.  The windows update prevents you from doing it.  At least that is my understanding.
The bottom line is I have the newest Adobe Reader on a 64 bit system and can open any web PDF with Google Chrome set as my default browser, because it is a 32 bit browser.  The new Adobe Reader will not open PDF's with a 64 bit browser in Vista.  A 64 bit system is fine as long as you use the 32 bit browser to open your PDF's in Vista.  I hope this helps some avoid some headaches.  I wish it had been posted when my problem first arose.
I think you can use a 64 bit browser in Windows 9 or later, but for Vista the above applies.

Yes I can create a short cut to internet exp. 32 bit on my desktop and I can even be using Internet expl. 32 bit, but when I try to open a PDF with adobe reader it won't work with internet exp. as my default browser b/c windows will always choose Internet exp. 64 bit which isn't supported yet by adobe reader.  With google chrome as my default browser windows can't choose an unsupported 64 bit browser in its place b/c google chrome doesn't have a 64 bit version.
My post was for those people who may not have realized yet that windows would not ever choose Internet expl. 32 bit over Internet expl. 64 bit if both exist on their system.  For them it is easiest to just choose a default browser that only has a 32 bit version.
If I understood your reply correctly, you were telling me how to create a shortcut to Internet exp. 32 bit on my desk top.  However, having that shortcut on my desk top and opening my browser through it will not prevent the problem of windows choosing my Internet exp. 64 bit browser for pdf's I try to open from the web.  Thank you for your response, but I think the problem that I have tried to explain does exist for many users and can only be fixed by using a 32 bit browser that is not Internet explorer as your default browser.  At some point if windows fixes the update that always chooses Internet expl. 64 bit over Internet expl. 32 bit, then this will all be irrelevant.
    Thanks

Make sure you have the latest Adobe Reader installed for your OS.

Did you try using Preview. If you control click on the PDF on your desktop you can use the "open with" option.

Make sure you have updated Acrobat X to the latest version 10.1.3.  They updated the PDF plug-in in 10.1.1:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/837/cpsid_83708/attachments/Acrobat_Reader_ReleaseNote_ 10.1.1.pdf#page=4

  • Adobe Reader will not open PDFs

Adobe Reader will not open any PDFs. It will not open any new PDFs, downloaded from online, or old ones that have already downloaded and saved to a file. I have tried to repair Adobe Reader XI and reinstalled the most updated version. When I attempt to open a PDF, it tries to open it in Micrsoft Word, promting a file converstion (that fails).

That looks like a perfectly good PDF, but since it's trying to open in Microsoft Word, that means your file association for .pdf files is incorrect.  You should change it to point to Adobe Reader instead of Word.

  • Adobe Acrobat X Standard does not open PDFs made by previous versions

Adobe Acrobat X Standard keeps giving an error while opening PDFs saying that "this document requires v7 (or v8) or higher to be opened" making it impossible to open any document that was created with earlier versions. After the message the files open blank. I am using Adobe Acrobat X Standard. Any solutions?
    Thank you in advance!

This alert was created by a JavaScript code (as you can see from the title of it), which someone obviously did not write very well.
You should be able to open it if you disable JS (Edit - Preferences - JavaScript), and then you can remove this code completely (if the file is not secured).

  • Reader will not open PDF'S

When trying to open a downloaded PDF it now asks me if I want to open in protect mode then it will not open the PDF and asks if I want to open in protect mode? This never has happened before. I tried downloading Reader again but it does not correct the problem.

here's info on protected mode:  http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/protected-mode-troubleshooting-reader.html
if you want to turn it off, look for something like edit>preference>security>and disable protected mode at startup.

  • Foxit Reader is not opening pdf files online

I am using Firefox 3.6.11 and Foxit Reader 4.2. I have no problem opening pdf files that I have saved. But when a website wants me to open a pdf file, I get a blank page.

I finally figured out a solution--- open Foxit Reader manually, got to Tools, then Preferences, then Internet- "Web Browser Options " check the box "Display PDF in Browser". FWIW I also checked the box "Show download file dialogue". This solved my problem where the pdf's quit opening and just displayed a blank tab. I don't what changed or why as the pdf's opened before doing the update of 3.6.10 to 3.6.11. go figure.....oh I'm using foxit reader 4.2.0.0928
    hope this helps someone else

  • Reader will not open pdf

I have tried re-installing  and repairing reader X and XI but nothing is working. All that happens is that the program starts then closes, I can't see any document open. I have been able to see pdfs on my browser so it seems like a problem with the program. I am a student and need this for all of my classes so any suggestions would be great. running windows 7

P.S. if the 11.0.4 update does not fix it, here are some workarounds...
Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement
Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
If you cannot open Reader by itself, try to disable Protected Mode in the registry; download, unzip, then run the attached registry script
It could even be a malware issue; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-core-dll-error.html

  • Adobe Reader will not open .pdf file.

I have Adobe Reader Acrobat 8 Professional.
I am attempting to open a .pdf file - it opens, but then gives me an error message and closes Adobe.
Error Code 148:3  You cannot use this product at this time.  You must repair the probgram by uninstalling and then reinstalling this product.
I've done this, but receive the same error message.  Any ideas what's going on?

Try using the Acrobat/Reader Cleaner Tool to remove the old version of Adobe Reader 8:  http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html
Then update your version of Adobe Reader:  http://get.adobe.com/reader/
By the way if you have both installed remove Reader and run the repair of Acrobat.

If you can read this ... go for it.  For info, we have an app that gets county data, makes a PDF and allows a user to open or save it.  Out of the 12 districts and 88 counties we have, some districts and their counties work fine.  2 in District 5, 3 in District 4, these all produce this error.
A "Cause" given at this link: http://kb.calyxsupport.com/kb/article.php?id=769 is that a corrupting character exists in the file path and/or the filepath is too long.  On this line of thought, it is being looked into if these 5 instances are somehow corrupting the file path when it is being concatenated in the app or, in the case of these 5 instances we know of, is the concatenated file path too long?
