Reading Ascii charactors from Parallel port???

Greetings:
I have a question about instructing a third party vender who is writing code in VB6.0. (windows XP sp2) 
They will be sending cycle counts thru the parallel port to my computer that i will be capturing using Labview 7.1.1 (windows XP sp2)
The format of the streaming will be Ex.   *000000324*000000325*000000326*... etc. Continuously
I can tell him to get rid of leading zeros if need be.
 I think i can capture this using VISA serial read.
a) But what should i tell the third party vender for him to write to the parallel port?  Also should set the printer port to RAW
    and/or bi-directional printing .
b) What is the pinout of the parallel cable between the two computers , is there a Null modem type of cable available, or is it pin to pin?
c) What about handshaking , such as printer not ready, buffer full, etc.etc.
Any help would be apreciated.

Hi Forrest,
Okay... that makes more sense.  You are trying to communicate beetween 2 PC's.  Something like LapLink.. And yes, it would be okay to do this with the parallel port, it may have more speed than the serial port.  However for ease of implementation, you can use the serial port communication.  It is actually quite easy to implement. 
The first step (if you are using Windows), is to establish the communication between the PC's using Hyperterminal.  You should be able to "chat" between the 2 PC's.  Maybe I shouldn't use the word chat..  You can communicate (Tx/Rx - ASCII) between the 2 PC's.  Once you verify that this works (at the desired speed - and configuration), you can implement it in Labview.

    I am trying to build a wireless phonocardiogram. I have a microphone that acquires heart sounds. these signals are amplified and sent to a A/D converter to digitize them. the digital signal are sent to a base unit. The digitals signals received at the base unit have to be sent to a computer (over a serial port to view them).
    I would like build a VI to plot ascii data received over the serial port.
    I would like to plot those values so that the plot just looks like a analog signal (the one I had before A/D conversion).
    Can anyone provide me some help?

    What is your transmission speed,  samplerate, and bandwidth needed in your project? The bandwidth of the serial port is somewhat limited. Let me give you an example
    Say you are using 115200 Kbit per second as transmission speed, one start bit/stop bit and parity bit, and 8 bit data. This will give you 115200/11 bytes pr second as the maximum theoretical transfer rate/sample rate. But if you are using up to 16 bit AD your  maximum samplerate will be 115200/(2x11). So my advise to you is to use a binary transfer protocol not ASCII based protocol. This is not a problem in Labview with serial transmission.
    Besides which, my opinion is that Express VIs Carthage must be destroyed deleted
    (Sorry no Labview "brag list" so far)

    You can use the port in and port out VIs found in the Advanced>Port I/O palette.  For an example check out 'Parallel Port Read and Write Loop.vi'.

    Yes, it is very easy to read from the parallel port. There have even been
    some VIs floating around allowing you to use the parallel port for digital
    I/O using the inport and outport VIs.
    To just use it to communicate, just use the VISA VIs with the proper resource
    name for the port you are using.

    Hello, I have an instrument that outputs raw data, not ascii, bytes to a serial port.  How do you display raw data, not ascii, bytes from a serial port?  Since raw data bytes are not displayable, there is got to be something in labview to interpret/display the received bytes the way it is as data in HEX or Binary.  The STRING-TO-HEX and STRING-TO-BINARY functions are not applicable in this case because the bytes were not string type in the first place.  For example, if the receive byte is 0x4D, I need to display 4D in HEX or 77 in Decimal and not the ascii character "M" corresponding to 0x4D ascii code.  I am using a VISA-RD function currently to receive the data from a COM port.  VISA-RD outputs string type.  Thank for any feedback or suggestion in advance.

    Of course they are string type, just not formatted in a human readable form. So, YES, these functions are not appropriate.

    Dennis is right, but there is no "decimal" display for strings, so the second requirement needs a tiny little bit more code.
    If you have a single byte string, you can typecast it into a U8 number and set the display format as decimal, hex, octal, or binary as desired. In decimal, it would display the number 77. Since it is now a numeric, you can even do math with it.
    In general, the string has multiple bytes, and you would typecast it into an array of U8 numbers (Since this is an often used function, there is also a "string to byte array" which does the same thing).
    Typecasting is the secret. You can e.g. easily typecast 2 bytes into a U16, 4 bytes into a I32, 8 bytes into a DBL,  etc. For more detailed requirements, there is also the "unflatten from string". Check the online help for details. Good luck!

  • Low frequency measuremen​t from Parallel Port

    Hi there...
    I need to calculate the "on" and "off" time and duty cycle in pulse form from a parallel port. By making the circuit in 5 or 0 V, I just simply put it in my parallel port. The problem comes when I need to measure a very very low frequency. In this case, I want to measure the duty cycle from my operated refrigerator. I need to know when the thermostat goes "on" and when it comes to "off". In my experience, the thermostat will be "on" in about 5-10 minutes and "off" in about 20-30 minutes. So, the pulse might be take for a long periode each.
    I've tried with Timing and Transition Measurement wizard or even by using Pulse Measurement.vi which is included in Waveform Measurement category. It only works for 2 Hz and . If I try to set it with 1 Hz or below, it comes the message :
    "Error -20308 occurred at Timing and Transition Measurements -> Untitled 1
    :4"  (waveform index 0 of 1)
    Possible reason(s):
    Analysis:  The waveform did not cross the mid reference level enough times to perform this measurement. Check the signal length, reference levels, and ref level units."
    Could someone help me please ?

    I've been stuck with this problem for weeks and really need some help. I've been searching a lot but I can't find a proper solution.
    I am trying to use Labview to plot and display some parameters of a data acquisition system for a project.
    The data acquisition system is connected to a computer via serial connection through COM 1 port.
    The data acquisition system sends a serial stream of data (ASCII string with baud rate 19200), as shown below (from HyperTerminal),

    The serial data stream consists of a time stamp (as 1st data), followed by 16 individual channel data, separated by comma "," and each stream ending in return "\n". Each value of the data ranges from 1 to 6 digits (value of -5000 to 15000).
     I have no problem reading this values correctly using HyperTerminal, but I have problem to plot and display individual parameters of this serial string in Labview. I want to save the entire data in  a “.csv” file corresponding to all the 16 channels with time stamp and plot each individual channel parameter in a graph with time on X-axis.
    I am relatively new to Labview hope I can learn a lot from your help.

    Now I had modified the program incorporating1D array for gauge display.....but currently I have a new problem. The program is running updating the file, waveform graph and Gauge very slowly. Approximately once in every 15 seconds 16 data streams are getting updated in a bunch with gauge sticking to the last value rather than indicating real time value.

    gets updated in a bunch after 15 seconds, rather than in every second. I thought the problem is with while loop but, i realised there is no delay associated with it..... Can u kindly help me in modifing the program so as it can update the waveform, file data and gauge in real time? (I have attached the modified VI file "suitcase new.vi" and the data gathered after executing the same as in "Trail.txt".)

  • The vi is identifyng the number of bytes to be read but the VISA Read vi is not able to read the data from the port.

    We are trying to communicate with the AT106 balance of Mettler Toledo.The VI is attached.
    We are sending in "SI" which is a standard command that is recoginsed by the balance. The balance reads it.The indicator after the property node indicates that there are 8 bytes available on the serial port. However, the VISA read VI fails to read the bytes at the serial port and gives the following error:
    Error -1073807253 occurred at VISA Read in visa test.vi
    Possible reason(s):
    VISA: (Hex 0xBFFF006B) A framing error occurred during transfer.
    The Vi is atttached.

    Hello,
    You should also definitely check the baud rates specified; a framing error often occurs when different baud rates are specified, as the UARTs will be attempting to transmit and receive at different rates, causing the receiving end to either miss bits in a given frame, or sample bits more than once (depending on whether the receiving rate is lower or higher respectively). You should be able to check the baud rate used by your balance in the user manual, and match it in your VI with the baud rate parameter of the VISA Configure Serial Port VI.

  • My parallel port cannot work on win2000 and new pc

    I was troubled by the reading/writing from parallel port on win2000 for a long time. I had made my programs work on win2000/OLD PC, but i failed with the same programs on win2000/new PC. I tried with the method from the forum, that is, install accessHW and other method from my colleagues. Allways failed. I have to return to an old pc, it work! I think not only win2000/winxp will influence parallel port work, but also pc hardware. My new PC is Dell's GX260SMT with p4 2.4G. Dell's FAE told me that i can not install win98 on the pc due to some limitation of mainboard. Who met the smae issue as mine? How to fix it? Thanks for any help.

    I typically stay away from Dell PC's. I always have problems with them..
    I'm surprised to read that a new PC doesn't support Win-98. Have you / can you try Win-NT 4?
    I can't understand why Win2K would be different with a newer PC. The OS assigns the base address of the parallel port to a typical value of 0378h. This is for LPT1.
    My question would be: Are you having problems with LPT1 or do you have a PCI-based Parallel Port (to add ports)? If so, you cannot change the base address with Win-2K or Win-XP which assigns a PCI base address to the port.
    Can you provide more details as what exactly changes between the 2 PC's. Other than the motherboard and typical hardware (of course).
    How is the parallel port configured?
    What are you doing
    with it, etc?
    Any information that can help figure out a solution.

  • Using Parallel Port with Outport.vi Problem

    Hello,
    I am trying to use my parallel port to control a relay network and have run into a problem. I am using the outport instead of visa because for some reason I get an error with visa and outport seems more simple. The problem I am having is that my program doesn't seem to be able to initially take control of the port. What I mean by this is that if I restart the computer and open/run my program, I get an incorrect output on the parallel port. However, if I run one of the example programs for controlling the paralle port using outport (attached) (I believe the one I use is called Reading and writing to parallel port using loops) I am able to control the output to the parallel port. Also, after the example has run, my program works correctly. However, if I restart my computer again and run my program first it can no longer control the port correctly. So the problem seems to be that my program isn't initializing the port correctly or assessing it right at the beginning of the program. However, looking at the example program I don't really see what they are doing that I am not. I have the correct port address. 
    My program takes values from a text file and displays them on the port and that works correctly.

    Hi Jag213, I'm glad you were able to resolve the issues you discussed on the other forum related to this issue.
    Now that you have it working, I would recommend a few things:
    1. Just try modifying one of the existing examples and see what you can get away with removing in order to keep it working the first time.
    2. Try modifying the timing on your example - 10 seconds is a long time to wait between each week, I wonder if you are getting a time out? Do the examples work when you insert that kind of timing delay?
    3. Add the In Port.vi into your code - this may be related to getting your Out Port.vi to work correctly.
    4. Your code controls 8-bits on the parallel port, while the examples control 32-bits. Do all 32 bits need to be initalized? Looking at the Parellel Port Read and Write Loop.vi Example, in the IO Connector Status, the 31st bit controls whether the target is initialized.
    Play with these settings and see if you can get yours to work the first. If all else fails, build your program to run off of one of the examples. For example, have the while loop run once, and then call yours as a SubVI.
