Reading books on iPad versus Kindle

I currently have a Kindle DX, which I love. I have been thinking of getting the iPad with retina display. Chiefly I would use this for reading books and playing games. I have seen some people responding who seem to also have both devices. Any advice to give me, if I go forward with my purchase?

I've never owned a Kindle, so I can't address the specific mechanics, but ther are a couple of advantages on both sides I can point out:
Kindle
Screen is much better suited to reading in bright sunlight
Tends to be less expensive
iPad
More apps and better suited to overall computing
Has apps for iBooks (Apple), Kindle (Amazon), Nook (Branes&Nobles), and others, so more options for reading content
Better integration with other devices in some respects.
I also personally wouldn't look at it as an either/or situation. both platforms have advantages.

Is there a way to mark each book that has been read on the iPad. As numerous books are purchased and read at random it becomes a continually more difficult task to remember which you have read and which are unread.
Them method also needs to allow for multiple readers.

    Ancientone,
Are you aware that you can change the iBook app display?
One way is to keep on the top shelf books that you are currently reading and below it books that are not read yet or already been read. Another way is to delete books from the iPad during synchonization. The books will be kept in your iTune library but will not show on the iPad.

  • Need to authorize the PC if I only read books in iPads and Sony reader?

I never read books in the PC.  I only use it to download purchases and transfer them to the devices. Do I still need to authorize the PC (consuming one authorization slot of the 6 available)?
    Thanks for your help!
    Luis

iPad and iPhones don't get authorised/deauthorised, only computers are. You mention deauthorising devices - do you mean that you've been into the 'manage devices' part of your account and removed them ? The 'manage devices' section is different to authorised computers : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4627
IHave you had other computers in the past and/or updated the OS on computers without deauthorising them ? Individual computers can only be deauthorised directly on them, but as you have more than 2 computers authorised then you can log into your account on your computer's iTunes via the Store > View Account menu option and 'deauthorise all' (which you can do once every 12 months) and you can then authorise/reauthorise the computers that you still have and need - see that page that you posted from for more info.

  • GettIng books from iPad to kindle

I want to be able to read my books I have on my kindle iPad app on my kindle hd 7 inch.  I however lost access the the amazon account with the books on it,  before I lost access I saved most of my books to my iPad.  Can I get those books from my iPad onto my kindle using cloud or syncing my iPad?

Not to the best of my knowledge, no. Unless I'm missing an option somewhere, Amazon's apps don't sync from device to device, they all pull from Amazon's cloud. You'll need to work with Amazon support to recover your account.
    Regards.

  • How to install acsm file to read books on ipad?

Overdrive cannot open books because acsm file has expired.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with the purpose of this forum. This forum supports Adobe Reader, a PDF reader.

  • Was reading book official appearing pop up came up asking if I wanted to upgrade-I pressed to do it and iPad is frozen with iTunes image and image of charger cord

    Was reading book on iPad
Pop up asked if I wanted to upgrade- probably stupidly I agreed- now iPad screen is frozen with ITunes symbol and image of charger cord on screen- tried turning it off - no help.

Carolyn explained how to reset the iPad. You don't need a tool or clip to do this...just your fingers.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
I do not think that is going to work, but try it.
You are getting the connect to iTunes message and that usually means that your iPad needs to be restored.

  • When I am reading books my pages turn by themselves.  What can I do about this?

When I am reading books, my ipad turns pages by bunches and when I am NOT touching the screen.  What can I do about this?

All it takes is a real light brush or touch for the pad to sense a page turn.  Is your cover/case touching the edge?

    Looking for a reading App.
    iPad (iOS 7.1.2) - Kindle.
I am looking for a good app that can help a college student with reading books that cannot be found on audio book.  I have tried voice over and it works but it's very monotone and it really strings things together.
    - I'm willing to pay for a good app but I can't seem to sort though the many that are out there. Any suggestions.

Ah. I'm surprised, but there we go.
    Have a look here ...

Didn't have time to do more than skim, but 'Ardour' looked promising. Protools is the only one I've used, the full product is one of the industry standards, but the free 'lite' version listed here seems to be limited to 2 in/out as well.
Referring to your original post, I'd think trying to write or 'script' something would be a nightmare ... synchronisation of streams within something like Applescript would be a major issue, quite apart from anything else.

Have you tried GoodReader? It claims to handle very large file sizes and it's very good for annotations. It's my PDF reader of choice on the iPad
    From the GoodReader manual:
File types to view in GoodReader
There are two types of viewing engines - the ones that we've written ourselves, and the built-in device's standard viewing engine. Our own engines provide great flexibility and many additional features not found in the built-in engine (for example, opening very large files). The built-in engine is very powerful and knows many file formats, but has many limitations and no additional features.
Files of very big size (our own viewing engine):
very large PDF files (including password-protected). File size is not the limit. Revolutionary PDF Reflow (Extract Pure Text) mode. See Viewing PDF Files for details.
very large TXT files. See Viewing TXT Files for details.
high-resolution pictures and other graphic files (including slideshow viewing mode). See Viewing Pictures for details.
And as a free bonus - files of normal size (iOS standard viewing engine):
all file formats supported by Safari engine: Microsoft Office files - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, HTML files and Safariwebarchives
iWork'08/09 files - Pages, Numbers, Keynote (files must be saved with Include Preview option)
.ai files saved with PDF Compatible option
audio files (natively supported by iOS)
video files (natively supported by iOS)

  • Can you read books on the ipad in direct sunlight

can you read books on the ipad in direct sunlight ?

Not very easily no. If you can get a non-reflective screen cover it might be a bit better, but it probably still won't be as good as, for example, a Kindle device is.

  • Kindle books on ipad

I have a kindle book on my pc/USB that I want to download and read on my ipad mini.  It will not download?  I have downloaded the kindle app to my ipad and cloud.

The Kindle app on your iPad should have an email address associated with it (tap the icon at the bottom right of the app to see what it is) - you could try attaching it and emailing it to that email address and it might show in the app (it might take a a few minutes for it to appear, or for you to get a 'failure' email).

  • Buying Kindle books on iPad

It must be easy but I can't find out how to buy Kindle books using my iPad. I'm aware that Apple forced Amazon to stop selling them to me through the iPad.  Thanks!

@Panadsurprse -- Thanks for the expanded answer! I usually read books on my Kindle device (better screen for daylight hours and battery life is awesomely long, unlike ipods, ipads or phones), but I could've sworn I'd bought them through my iPod Kindle app before (for lit-up screen reading in bed), so I assumed I was just being obtuse and overlooking something obvious when I couldn't find a Kindle Store link within the app or a "buy book" button at the end of sample chapters I liked. I guess I must have been reading samples I downloaded a long, loooong time ago, previous to this change. Thanks again, :)
[P.S. i like your screen name -- can't tell if you were being purposely tricky, but I love how I just assumed it said "Panda Surprise" the first time I looked and then had to look again to see it wasn't Panda and still a third time when I typed my message to spell the "surprse" right! Reminds me of those studies showing that often people only need to see a few key letters in a word to know what word it is, and if reading fast, they may not even notice if the leretts in the mdidle are srcmabled as long as the frist and lsat letrets are in the cerroct potision. ;) Cheers!

I cannot read, use my iPad outdoors?  Cannot read books, surf the net; nothing.  Apple sold me a screen guard to help with the glare, I've adjusted the settings to just about every combination but still nothing.  HELP!!

Turning the brightness up as much as possible will help a little. However, as Skydiver notes, screens like those used in tablets and cell phones don't work well in bright sun. That's why I have a Kindle for reading outside. Not to mention, I'd feel a lot less awful if I got sand in a $100 ereader than if I got it in my $700 iPad.

  • Can you download and read books with the iPad?

Can you download and read books with the iPad?

Yes. There is the free iBooks app  which then allows you to download books from Apple's book store. Kindle also has an app and there are other e-reader apps.
The one thing to consider, the iPad is a backlit screen, so it's like reading off a comptuer screen. Some have issues with eye strain so just bear that in mind.
