Reading DVD from Sony RDR-VX535

Just bought a Sony Video Cassette Recorder/DVD Recorder to transfer years of family VHS tapes to DVD. Transfer seemed to go ok and DVD plays in DVD player. However, when put into my iMac the DVD files are not recognized either to play the DVD or put into imovie to edit, which is my ultimate goal. Sony tech support says I need MPEG codec but that means nothing to me. Not video savvy so need help!
Thanks

I'm assuming you are wanting to transfer VHS to DVD in your VHS/DVD player and then use the DVD's in your mac to edit movies with imovie.
You will need to convert the files on the DVD's you have made to a format that it compatible with imovie, DV will do fine. To make this conversion you will need some 3rd party software, I'd use mpegstreamclip (free), but you will also need to get the Quicktime mpeg2 playback component from  which will cost you $20/30. I believe isquint and some other software doesn't require this component and is also free, I don't use these applications but believe they are a little more restrictive than mpegstreamclip.

  • Reading files from Sony DVD810

The Sony DVD810 is a hybrid that records on DVDs, memory sticks and internal memory. I'm trying to download a file from the internal memory, and when I do, I get a file folder with three files inside: AVIN0001.BNP, AVIN0001.INP & AVINOOO1.INT. I don't know what to do with these files, and Sony tech support hasn't been any help so far. Can anybody help me with this? I'd like to get this video into a form where I can edit it. Thanks for any assistance you can provide. John Harrison - [email protected]

Sorry, but your camera is incompatible with iMovie 6, which only accepts DV streams from tape via firewire.
If it records on DVD it records in the mpeg2 format, which is the standard final delivery format of a DVD and not intended for further editing.
You can import the mpeg2 file to your desktop, then:
You need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • Duplicating DVDs from Sony DVD/VCR combo

Please forgive a question that actually has nothing to do with DVD Studio Pro. (I DO own it, though!) I just figured you guys would know a lot.
I have a Sony DVD/VCR combo unit. I've created a DVD on the unit with footage from my MiniDV camcorder. The disc burned just fine and plays on my Mac. But I can't use Disc Utility to duplicate the DVD as I am used to doing. I get an "input/output error" message when I try to create a New Image from the disc. I don't see how copy protection could factor in; I made the disc myself, and it's all my own footage shot on MiniDV.
Any thoughts? Or workarounds? I'd like to avoid recreating the entire 2-hour DVD by digitizing straight to my Mac if at all possible.

Toast will do it very easily, but you might want to try this one. I haven't used it, but it looks promising.

  • My macbook pro won't read dvds from my external cd/dvd drive.

I have a new macbook pro 13 that I got for Christmas. I purchased a external cd/dvd usb drive so that I can watch movies on my mac since it doesn't have a dvd drive built-in. I put my dvd into the drive, and all my mac does is open a fiel that has the video and audio seperated. I tried clicking on the video file to see if I can watch it, but the computer has no software to read it, apparently. I don't know if this is a software thing or if it's my drive.

First, try one of the DVD drive cleaning kits that are available.

i am trying to rip a couple of dvds to my mac book using handbrake. everything was going fine for a while. then on one cd, it would start the scanning but would freeze. tried mac the ripper and had the same thing happen. ejected the disc, tried with a different one, with the same results. put in yet another one and it was not recognized by the computer at all. now the dvd's are being recognized, but still freezing in the scanning stage.

  • I need a workflow for a PAL DVD from Sony HXR-NX5U footage.

    Dear community,
My task is as stated in the title.
Please let me know what process you guys and/or gals have with complete success.

OK, my camera shoots in NTSC frame rates only, as I purchased the cam in the US. (Subsequently, Sony released this upgrade to make the NX5U have the option to switch to PAL Frae rates) whcih I will be doing...
Do you mean that this camera is natively switchable between PAL and NTSC - how so?

  • Importing from Sony mini DVD?

Brand new iMac and I cant insert the mini DVD from Sony Handycam camcorder since iMac only takes standard size dvd. It appears as if there is no other plug-in option, eg, firewire or usb port. Any suggestions? The Sony model is dcr-dvd 305 ... should I burn files from small dvd to large one? Will I lose quality? Bought this computer for ease of use and already frustrated...thanks!

If your camera is several years old, it is most certainly Mpeg2. If your DVD will play in a DVD player, it is almost certainly MPEG2. The alternatives are AVCHD which is a fairly recent format for high definition cameras, and dv which is uncompressed, and probably not used on your dvd. If you can open your dvd in the finder, you may be able to right-click, get info, and find out for sure.
If you are interested in a new camera, there are a lot of choices. The simplest choice is a standard definition miniDV tape camera that connects with firewire. If you go HD, there are mpeg2 cameras and AVCHD cameras in tape, DVD, flash memory, and hard drive formats.
Personally, I like the flash memory AVCHD, but others like the easy archival capability of tape.
See this Apple document for compatible camcorders.

  • DVD from USA on a Mac in germany!

    Hi everybody!
I have a MacBook Pro (os x lion), i bought it 4 moths ago. I've just realized, that my mac cannot read DVD from USA. So my question, is there way to change this so that my mac can read every formate? If yes how?
    Thank you all

You can also change the region of your built-in optical drive, but it will always be set for just one region, and you can only change the region five times before it locks permanently onto the last region set. Thank the motion picture industry for this nuisance.

  • Copying dvd from different region

I wanted to play a dvd on my macbook but it is a different region zone (2). I copied the movie to my hardrive using mactheripper.
I still could not get the movie to start by choosing the video_ts file using the mac dvd player. Then I downloaded the program matinee and it tells me that there was an error when attempting to start the movie.
Has anyone else out there experienced similar problems when trying to do this?
Thanks in advance for any help

    dobes918...
If you use VLC on a MacBook, VLC can only read DVDs from regions for which the DVD drive has been set. Older PowerBook models can use VLC to read DVDs from any region regardless of the DVD drive settings, but not the newer Intel Macs.
Also, gligeen is looking for a region-free recorder, not just a region-free player. It's possible to get a high-quality DVD recorder whose firmware can be flashed to make it region-free. According to the folks over at the MTR forums (http://www.ripdifferent.com/phpbb2/index.php), the Pioneer 111-D (street price around $40) and a firewire enclosure (another $4)0 to hold the drive is the way to go.
Pioneer drives tend to be of very good quality.

  • I have a Sony RDR-HDC300 DVD Recorder

I have a Sony RDR-HDC300 DVD Recorder hooked up via HDMI cable
Recently when turning it on, and it is "loading" it only stays on for about 10 mins.
The loading does not complete and the recorder turns itself off and the TV screen tells me it has no signal.

This camera works with both iMovie 09 and iMovie 11 (and all the older iMovies, too.)
If you read the supported cameras page, you will notice that no miniDV cameras are listed individually, because they all work.
For this camera, you need a Firewire connection. USB will not work, except to remove photos from the camera if you take stills.
If you have FW800, you need a 9 pin to 4 pin firewire cable.
If you have FW400, you need a 6 pin to 4 pin firewire cable.
The camera must be plugged in to AC power (not batteries) when importing.

Been given a 3.25" DVD from a camcorder.  Will my iMac read it?  Don't want to damage it.

No. Those mini-DVDs cannot be used on a Mac and may damage your Superdrive.
You need to connect the  camcorder to the Mac and set the camcorder to playback to transfer the video file to your hard drive.

  • Importing and Using Video from Sony DVD Camcorders

I have a Sony DVD Camcorder (DCR-DVD 92) and I have recently shot a lot of footage which is now on my computer. The file extensions are .BUP, .IFO, and .VOB. I am able to import some of the files into final cut but they are shortened to only a few seconds each when in reality, they were shot for several minutes. Is there a way to make these work or to convert the files so they can be edited in Final Cut Pro 5?

    mrescobar 1 1,
You should find that GreatVideo! v1.7 for Mac OS X - 10.4', by Software Architects, Inc., solves your problem. Converts from Sony to Mac readable format.

  • Transfer epub files from sony reader/pc to playbook

I am having trouble transferring epub files from sony reader/pc to playbook and then finding them on the playbook after copying completed?  Please help!

I just did this the other day for my wife, took some books that she purchased on her Sony Reader and moved them to her new PB. You need to download Calibre ( free) and also download software that will remove the DRM from the books that are on the Sony. I bought it from www.ebook-converter.com , was $29.95 US. I've read that there are also free ones out there but I went with this b/c it was mentioned in several posts. Go to your reader library on line, download the book, use the DRM and Calibre and then you'll have the file to transfer to your PB. You'll also need an e-pub reader, several on the Appworld, I used Book Reader.Of course I bought and paid for the Sony books so I see nothing wrong in just getting them to a devise that I want to read them on. This same process works for library books that you check out that have DRM enbedded. I Hope this helps.
