Reading iMacG5 superdrive discs on g4 powerbook with OS9.2

Hello: I have burnt DVD's and CD-R's using both the Disc
Utility and Roxio Toast Lite on the G5 Superdrive. They
read in fine on the G5 but when I attempt to read them on
my G4 powerbook ( which uses OS9.2 and does not have a
built in burner ) the laptop does not even recognize the
discs and unceremoniously ejects them after a while.
Would anybody know the reason for this?

Those disks are only designed for G5 use.
You need the retail 10.4 installer disks to install 10.4 on a Powerbook G4 which did not come with 10.4.

The optics might be dirty. Try running a cleaning CD through it and see if that makes a difference.
If not, it will have to be replace.

What Superdrive (external USB) is compatable with Mountain Lion 10.8.3?
My New install of 10.8.3, will now.... not reconize anything I put in my drive... it spits it back out!
Superdrive does NOT reconize any activity.
It will show my information on/of my drive...but, that is about it...
Is there a patch/fix for this issue with 10.8.3?
If not...why is Apple (seemingly) ignoring this issue? There are so many with the same complaint.
They want $19 to answer this question...why? I just bought the upgrade to 10.8.3 a couple of days ago.
Anyone have any suggestion, beside switching BACK to Microsoft...?

Sorry about the serial number...wasn't thinking.  Mentally noted.
I would think it to not be too much, to ask for it to be able to read/write to the listed capablities list with the product (superdrive). The different media type...
I insert blank -R DVD, -R CD, ...anything I put in,it spits it out.  NOTE:  The ONLY thing I've been able to get it to read, is some old CD's that I had some mp3 files on...it would read that OK... but if I try a DVD read or write and write a CD...NOTHING!

  • Where can I find a restore disc for a PowerBook G4?

Where can I find a restore disc for a PowerBook G4?

The detailed problem is that I had used the computer for a long time without turning off.  I wanted to give it to someone else so I needed to clean the data off. Before deleting anything I switched off then on and the HD seemed to have developed a fault as the start up routine began then when the Hd started the computer crashed and restarted at the begining with the startup routine and I have not been able to go further than this.  I changed the HD for an old one that I had replaced previously which had the same software system, Leopard.  This worked perfectly but on switching off then on behaved as the other had.
I figured that if I could start with the restore disc I could clean the HD or at least investigate it.  Hence the need for a restore disc.
Would this work or is there something in the logic board that is upsetting the HD and what ever I do will not cure the problem.
    Any thoughts??

  • Reading DVD Recorder Discs

    Greetings,
My iBook G3 is a great little workhorse and I am hoping I can get more mileage out of it. Hopefully, this forum can set me straight!
I want to be able to play discs burned from a DVD recorder hooked up to my television on this iBook. The recorder we have is a cheapie TruTech DVD+RW. Much to my dismay however, the laptop isn't recognizing the burnt discs. It just spits them out. (My 17 inch Powerbook is doing the same, btw). The DVD players in my home read the burnt discs as well as a low end Compac laptop. Argh!
    My questions are these:
Can the current DVD-ROM drive in my iBook (MATSHITADVD-ROM SR-8176) read burnt DVD+R discs or not?
Would the currently installed drive be able to read burnt DVD-R discs?
Do I need to purchase an external DVD drive for my iBook in order to read burnt discs? I'm hoping to avoid an external device if possible.
Would a new DVD-R recorder burn discs that are readable by the current drive? Would this be the cheaper route than buying an external DVD drive?
So many questions. I am thankful there are smart, helpful people out there that can set me straight.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Ruben

    Hi Ruben,
All DVD-R's rely on some sort of recording "dye" , even if the colour isn't apparent to you. Different ones, use different types of dyes. They also have different forms of reflective coatings. Some work better in some drives than in others.
Memorex discs can actually come out of a variety of different factories. Some of these seem to be amongst the most problematic of all in Macs.
Head to http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia , type Memorex into the search field and hit return. You will see that while some Memorex discs fair quite well, others have pretty mediocre performance.
I think you should try a different brand of disc before assuming there is anything aactually wrong with your computer. There may be, of course, but disc incompatibility is so common that it is worth eliminating first.
For my part I've always found that TDK and Verbatim disks work well in all of my optical drives.
    Cheers

  • Getting SuperDrive medium and hardware errors with Toast 7...Help!

Ever since I upgraded (or downgraded) from Panther to Tiger, I have not been able to burn DVDs using Toast Titanium 7. I have burned both to CD and to DVD using iDVD, but no luck with Toast. I keep getting either medium or hardware errors. I have tried several brands of DVD with no luck. The last straw was when I successfully burned a small iMovie to DVD and took the very next DVD in the stack and tried in Toast with the old "hardware error 03" Does anyone have a true fix (other than a new mac)? I have tried numerous system maintenance items, etc. but nothing is working. Here is much detail as I can provide:
    1ghz 12" G4 Powerbook with 1.25 gig RAM
    Matshita DVD-R UJ-816, Firmware ver. DXJ3 / MM3-C
If anyone knows of a fix, please let me know! Sigh....guess I should have replaced the SuperDrive with a new one when the guts were open for the new HD.

Although my drive is a UJ-845E, it works fine with 7.1.2. Upgrade to that, and if there's still a problem, let's cover it then, as problem characteristics might also change. Hopefully, 7.1.2 will fix it for you.

  • Can I use the start up discs for my Powerbook to install 10.4 on my iMac?

Hi, I just bought a used Powerbook G4 1.67GHz and wanted to use the start-up discs with OS 10.4.2 that came with the Powerbook on my older iMac G4 800MHz. What I really want to do is wipe the hard drive clean on my older iMac and then reinstall OS 10.4.2 and associated programs from the discs that came with the Powerbook. Will this work? I do not want to wipe everything off of the older iMac and then realize that these discs will not work on the older machine. There are two discs that say PowerBook G4 15-inch and 17-inch Mac OS X Install Discs version 10.4.2 AHT version 2.5.2 Disc version 1.0

  • LightScribe DVD±R/RW is no longer able to read all lightscribe discs(Blank/used)

    Hi,
The product Name of my computer is: HP Pavilion dv6-6093ex Entertainment
    Notebook PC support
The number of my computer is : LM610EA#A2N.
Could anyone please at this splendid forum take some of their precious time
out to really reply my questions and solve my problems?
    FIRST OF ALL:
My HP Pavilion Laptop is about 3 years old.
    My
sister's Dell Inspiron laptop is 3 years old.
My HP laptop is well-cared, as opposed to my sister's Inspiron Dell laptop, which is always thrown in dust without caring at all. Also, its battery is always inserted even when it is fully charged while the laptop is plugged in to the main power supply. However, my laptop is either used on only battery, or on plugin. Also, it is kept from the dust. But, I really found that the battery of the Dell laptop still lasts about three and half hours, and there is no problem cooling fan is not properly properly.
I only remember one thing differently done on my laptop battery which is I charged it fully, then I stored it without using it for about four months, then when I reused it, I found it got worse over time. I.e. first time of using it after storing,I found it empty, then I charged it again fully, however, then it lasted about 2 hours, then 1 and half hours, next an hour, now it is only lasting about 20 minutes without performance. If there is high performance, then
    the computer shuts down suddenly.
    My problem is follows:::
First: Whenever I inserted any Containing Data OR Data CD/DVD-RLightScribe discs, I found that HP optical driver was unable to read them. When clicking on the optical disc drive 'double-click' while disc was inserted, then I found that disc opened as this way(NOTE: With a CD/DVD player is grayed out)
I was told 'I suspect the culprit might be hardware and lightscribe dive might be
corrupt. Please sent it to service center to check. In addition, this thread could be as a reference:

Since no one replied to me at HP forums, although my HP laptop is one of their products, I had to post my problem here to know if my driver is corrupted and needs to be replaced or not.

I tried running the below command line to fix potential disk issue 'Chkdsk/r /f'
I cleaned the drive, discs, and so on.
I have uninstalled the all third-party data recording software.
I have uninstalled the Cyber DVD suite, lightscribe system software which
came pre-installed with my HP pavilion Notebook.
I have recovered my system from the HP Factory Recovery discs.
I have tried opening all those LightScibe discs not opening on my HP optical
drive, on a Dell optical drive, and all of them were opened well, although Dell
optical drive did not have a lightscribe feature at all., nor third party disc
    recording software
However, the problem is still with opening the discs LIGHT-SCRIBE
    Thus, my questions are:
How to determine if the drive is corrupted and needs to be replaced with
    another one.
I think there something needed to be done on the BIOS Of my HP laptop[[[A similar problems happened on my Desktop computer's optical drive which is as follows (ALL discs are opened as empty by Optical Drive of My Desktop Computer) ---while my optical drive of my desktop was connected to the primary slave IDE, and the HDD was connected to the primary master IDE, the optical drive and hard disk are functioning well. However, I remember that while burning an image with Nero essential V: 5, something went wrong, and then the Optical Drive of My Desktop Computer (HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20) became NOT recognised/Installed on BIOS, although it was still shown on the device manager as a recognised device. Also, it was listed on my computer, however, when entering a disc(blank or with data) into the drive, I found it was not recognised, and it opened empty(no files at it), although it contains data. Thus, I decided to boot to BIOS, and clicked on 'Autodetection for IDE', then I found that only HDD was still shown as installed on BIOS. However, the optical drive was not. Th I tried clicking on it on BIOS and then clicking on 'enter' to try to let the device be re-recognized. However, that made no difference. I had to take part my computer ,and then reconnected the optical drive onto the secondary slave IDE , and let HDD connected to the same primary master IDE. Then, I found that the problem solved and all discs were read normally. Aslo, optical drive became installed on BIOS

I understand that you are having an issue with your battery and the lightscribe drive. You would also like to know about DL(Dual Layer) support.
Here is a link to  Troubleshooting the notebook battery to assist with the battery concern.
You asked what dual layer support is , here is a definition from webopedia for the explanation.
    What is dual layer support
As you stated in your post your system supports  reading
The DL refers to dual layer, it does not list a CD DL.  What type of disk are you using?
From your post I noticed it does read the title of the disk but is unable to read the file.
Did you use any form of compression software  when writing the files?
Would you try inserting a  supported blank disk and writing to it.  If you can do this and read the disk after your drive is functioning.
The only other way to check would be to remove and reinstall it  into another computer to test if it works there.
Yes there is a bios update listed on the driver page for your notebook.

    Thanks a lot,
I wish that Paul_Tikkanen could have participated in solving this issue since I know he has insight in such problems.
Could you please be a little bit patient with me and go through all my points below and answer me::
IF you had  had a close look at my screen shots before, you would have seeing I have classified the disc haveing and not having the problem  into three categories each of which has its screen shots under it.
Blank Or Used(containg data) CD/ DVD ±R/RW lightscirbe is unable to be  read by optical drive
Not Blank(containing data) CD/ DVD ±R/RW NON -Lightscirbe disc opens normal
    Blank CD/ DVD ±R/RW NON-lightscirbe opens normal(Opens like a USB FlashDrive or With a CD,DVD)::
First The kind of discs I have been used to using, and seeing in the market are only:
    CD-R, C-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW.
    However, I never ever used or saw 'CD-ROM, DVD-RAM, DVD-ROM CD-R DL, CD+R DL, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, CD-RW DL, CD+RW DL, DVD-RW DL, DVD+RW DL.
Thus, Could you please be a little more detailed about each of the above disc types?
Second: I don't know if I can see 'DVD+R DL' written on the cover of DVD like what I am accustomed to see 'DVD-R'?
Third: What difference is there between 'DVD-RW', and 'DVD-RW DL', and 'DVD-R' and 'DVD-R DL'?

NOTE, those discs are for HP Factory Recovery Discs.I have created those Discs via HP Recovery Manager.  After creating them, I have labelled them with lightscribe software. ALL LightScribe are not read well and are unknown. Thus, my answer for your question is No, I don't use compression software unless if the program 'HP Recovery Manager' used a compression built-in tool while creating those discs'
Moreover, I have even restored my laptop from the HP factory Recovery discs which means everything must have been OK

Have you seen my screen shots well?
The key of my problem as to unable to reading LightScribe is the answer of this question of mine: Why do I see 'RAW' or 'unknown' as a file system for disc inserted whenever I insert a ligthSribe disc into drive?
All Blank Or containing data CD/ DVD ±R/RW lightscirbe are unable to be  read by optical drive. When clicking on drive 'duble-click', I found it opens  like a USB FlashDrive or With a CD,DVD player, however, 'with CD/DVD Player' is grayed out) When I chose 'like a USB FlashDrive, I found there was no disc inserted, although it was.
If you mean other discs not LightScribe, then I would be saying YES. And they all worked well, except the lightscribe(Blank, or containing data) were not read well at all.(all are unknown).
    Sparkles1 wrote:

You mean I need to remove the optical drive and install on another laptop brand. If so, It would be compatible with any laptop brand?
NOTE: the reason around this problem is not lightscribe discs(I think) since any optical drive without having a lightscribe feature can read lightscribe discs. For instance the Dell laptop(Windows 7) could read all lightscribe disc or non lightscribe discs, even although it doesn't have any lightscribe feature, nor a disc recording software, except the Windows built-in default  tools. Dell optical drive, although not having a lightscribe feature, read all discs no matter the disc type is. Thus, In my HP optical drive having a lightscribe feature, I have decided to get rid of (lightscribe feature by removing the lightscribe system software, and all Cyber DVD-Suite). However, the problem is still with reading lightscribe discs.

    Updating the BIOS
First:: I have updated my BIOS from F.05 into F.1B by using HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors) (sp55068) F.1B hoping to get rid of this problem, but that made no difference at all.
    NOTE
Other suggested that I insert an empty rewritable CD and try running the following command: format e: /fs:UDF
I did, but it didn't help.
Other suggested to download the latest version LightSribe system software, but I would be saying how to do that as long as HP would be phasing out HP LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling technology. HP will gradually transition products to comparable optical disc drives without LightScribe technology.
Second:: I've also been searching in HP forums, but always they said nonsense comments which I don't put up with. Take this one for example,
I'd be happy to do all I can to help with your lightscribe. Please note:Beginning May 2011 and throughout the year, HP will be phasing out HP LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling technology. may be found on a number of public websites. Search the Internet for LightScribeto find these pages.
This blurb and much more information can be found in the following document; Creating Disc Labels with LightScribe

Finally I would be saying that LightScribe website is no longer available(discontinued). As HP said. IF HP customer care couldn't help their customers, I think it would be better to completely discontinue selling HP products.

  • Mac OS 9 needed on Powerbook with OS 10.3.3 only

I have just purchased a used (immaculate) 17 inch Powerbook with OS 10.3.3 installed. When installing Photoshop I have to put in 5.5 first then upgrade CD to install Photoshop 7.
Photoshop 5.5 apparently requires OS 9 to install. When I put the CD in a "Classic" symbol popped up in the dock but didn't start up because OS 9 was not available.
In order for me to install Photoshop 7 I need to start with 5.5 and then upgrade.
I have had many Macs since '89 and have upgraded etc.. I have an old OS install CD for a G4 However it won't start up without alraedy having OS 9 in the machine.
How do I install even a new CD of OS 9 if I can't get it to start up in Classic?

  • Is there an external hard disc that will work with Mac OS10.4.11 and Windows Vista?

Is there an external hard disc that will work with both Mac (OS10.4.11) and Windows (Vista)?

For NTFS on Mac, there are both open-source and commercial solutions. See:

For HFS+ Drivers for Windows, there is only one:

    # Question
I am informed by FF that there are updates. When I click on them the window just says it's trying to connect to the server and never does. I am never able to update and I believe FF is now up to 3.6.17.
I have a Mac Powerbook with 10.4.11 and FF 3.6.13.

That is because that Firefox 3.6.x version has been released later than the Firefox 4 version.
If you have problems with updating then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded
