Reading large PDFs on iPhone?!

hi all,
i have Acrobat X and have an iPhone.
i would really like to be able to read large (45 or 65 GB) PDF's and to be able to /search/ them on my iPhone.
can anyone help me with this? i am reading up on iBooks but it appears i have to email the document to myself to be able to read it on the phone (cough-cough) and i am reading up on GoodReader which sounds like it has a moderately complicated method for gettng it to the iPhone.
also, i would really prefer not to have to upgrade my free Dropbox to a paid account in order to access these but also it would be really nice to be able to load maps in pdf format to my phone so i can use them while traveling. right now if i store them on Dropbox i don't have access to them while i don't have internet access.
am i just not searching the internet correctly or is this an obvious black hole for life management for some reason.
thanks for any help.

There are more than one PDF reader available. Try the free Adobe Reader first. I'm giving you instructions for Reader, but it would be the same for another paid reader like PDF Expert, my favorite, $US 9.99:
Connect your iPhone or iPad to your computer and go to iTunes. Select the device at the upper right:
Once you've selected the device, click the Apps tab.
But you need to scroll down to File Sharing below where you'll see a list of your apps and their data files. Select Adobe Reader (or the other PDF reader you're using).
This shows all the PDF files and folders currently in your app. To add a new, large app, click the Add... button at the bottom and select it for your computer.
Then click the Sync button to sync it to your device. It will appear in your app.
There are other ways of getting (smaller) PDFs to your PDF reader: You can open them from an email or a browser, or transfer them through a service like Dropbox.
When you download the current version of Adobe Reader 11.2, go to Help to look at a manual which explains other ways of transferring files.
Good luck.

  • Reading large PDFs

    Hey everyone.
    I'm trying to read a few rather large PDFs on my iPhone using FileMagnet, but after I get past page 6 or 7, FileMagnet informs me that there isn't enough memory to load the rest of the file.
    What can I do to view this, and other large PDFs, in my phone?

  • Large pdf to iPhone without emailing (or iBooks)?

    i have a 45 and a 65 GB pdf that i want to be able to read on my iPhone.
    i have had an iPhone 3, 4 and now 5 and i have never been able to add pdfs to my phone unless i load them to Dropbox. since DB is cloud connected this is rather inconvenient if you want to be sure that you can view a map while travelling.
    i am reading up (again) on this and it appears that i can now get these into iBooks but i have to EMAIL them to myself?
    is there an alternate method that does not require emaling? do i have to use iBooks to read pdf's? what if i am not /buying/ them from the iBooks store?
    thanks for any help.

    It would be pretty exciting to try to get a 65GB PDF file onto an iPhone 5, since the largest storage on iPhone 5 is 64GB (including iOS, apps, etc.).

  • Reading EPUB, PDF, MOBI and other formats ...

    Now I don't understand why I can't find an app which is capable of reading large PDF/EPUB formats, but I've found an app that is capable of reading large MOBI format. The largest file it ever read is over 30 MB ... I need an app that is capable of reading large EPUB/PDF files, any suggestions?

    You could try the Abite reader http://albite.org/reader
    It's free, and there are many version of it.
    If I remember correctly, epub files are just zip files with the resources in it, html and images.
    There is an app called "Editori pdf", search for it at the store. Here a link, it doesn't work for my phone, so I don't know how good it is: http://store.ovi.mobi/content/363956

  • Any Apps for reading large (200Mb) PDF files?

    Hi
    I have air charing and Stanza, but they seem to not like large PDF files.
    Is thee any apps that can open these large PDFs? or is it a limitation of the actual iPhone? I have a 3GS 16Gb
    cheers

    There is an app called Goodreader that is specifically designed for PDFs.

  • Large PDF file (ebook) on ipod touch to read?

    I have a large pdf file (7.0 mb, 445 pages) that I want to be able to read (without killing my eyes) on my overseas flight. I added the file via an app called file magnet. But it ran low on memory and crashed. Plus the text was very small.
    I love the way ereader pro works but unsure if those books are in pdf format. Or if I can even add my own books?
    Is this idea even possible for me to do?
    I would be
    a) willing to reformat the document if need be.
    b) pay for an app that would allow this.
    and/or both...
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    There are several iPhone/iPod Touch apps that can read PDF files. However, the ones I have found to not re-flow the text (if you find one, let use know).
    While less than perfect, you can use the free desktop Stanza app
    <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/34623>
    to convert a PDF to an ePub format which can be read via the free iPhone/iPod Touch Stanza app.
    The iPhone/iPod Touch Stanza app can then change the font size, text color, background color, etc... And Stanza is a nice eBook reader.
    The iPhone/iPod Touch Stanza app can download eBooks via several methods. From web sites that support Stanza (such as FictionWise, Project Gutenberg, etc..), from your own web server if you specify the link as stanza://path/to/ebook.epub, or you can enable the desktop Stanza -> Tools -> Enable Sharing, which will allow your iPhone/iPod Touch pull eBooks current displayed on the Stanza desktop into your the iPhone/iPod Touch Stanza app.
    However, I will warn you that the PDF to ePub conversion leaves a lot to be desired, as a lot of formatting information is lost, but it is readable and you can most definitly change the font size and other font attributes.

  • How can I read a PDF stored on iCloud on my iPhone?

  • Does anyone know of an e-reader app for the iphone that has text to speech capability? I have a Kindle 3G that can read whole pdf documents and books but I cannot figure out how to do it on my iphone 4.

    Does anyone know of an e-reader app for the iphone that has text to speech capability? I have a Kindle 3G that can read whole pdf documents and books but I cannot figure out how to do it on my iphone 4.
    All of the apps I have found on the App store either do not have the text to speech capability or if they have it they will only read a page at a time or simply read the text you paste into their window. I really do not understand what is so difficult about having this feature as Kindle provides it--though Amazon does not make the feature available on its iPhone 4 app.
    Please help.

    thanks. yes i am aware of the VoiceOver feature but it is NOT the solution to my problem. as you said, it is a solution to a different set of issues. i want the text to speech ability because i there are books i need to read but do not have the time to sit down and read them and have become used to listening to them read to me either by a professional human reader or with the text to speech software on the Kindle.
    I think Apple makes the best audio devices but i am really disappointed in this inexplainable shortcoming. if apple can give us siri they ought to be able to design a nice little button that i can push to turn on text to speech while i am in a document, book, magazine or webpage. clearly it is possible as apple has added the "reader" button in safari to have web pages dropped into the reader format.
    thanks for your suggestion though, it is what everyone suggests but it does not address the issue.

  • Large PDF in Adobe Reader on my iPad

    I have a large PDF ( over 400 pages) but when I open in Adobe Reader on my iPad I can only get to the first 100 pages or so.  Am I doing something wrong?  Thanks for any help.*

    Is it possible to share the file? It's possible that the document is corrupted, but it's also always possible that there is a bug. If you can share the file I'd appreciate it!

  • I want to save large pdf files from my computer to my iPad so I can view them in Adobe Reader.

    I want to save large pdf files from my computer to my iPad so I can view them in Adobe Reader. I do not want to view them in iBooks or Quickoffice. Since I cannot email these large files, how can I get them on my iPad? Thanks for your help.

    I think that Adobe reader supports file sharing.
    Connect the iPad to your computer and launch iTunes. Select the iPad on the left side under "devices". Click on the Apps Tab in the window on the right. Scroll down to the File Sharing Apps list under the main apps list. Click on Adobe Reader. Drag the documents into the file sharing window on the right or select them using the "add" button.
    Launch the Adobe reader app and the files should be in there.

  • [iPhone/iPad] Newspaper app that reads from PDFs on a server

    I've just been asked to build an app for iOS that reads our local newspaper. I'm a newcomer to developing iOS apps, but I'm a quick study and I hear around a lot that it's pretty simple. So accordingly, I'd like it to be as simple as possible, no bells and whistles, just straight to the point.
    I've already done some basic research on developing iOS apps, so I kind of understand how it works. I'm just posting here to get some answers from actual people instead of doing an aimless, mindless search on the Internet.
    Here's what I want it to do:
    • Use the same log in credentials from the parent website to gain access to the iOS version of the newspaper.
    • Display a scalable digital version of the newspaper pages (like a PDF) so that it's readable on both iPhone and iPad.
    • Access the website server (where the PDFs for the pages already are) to retrieve the PDFs and display them.
    Now, I know some about putting a simple app together, but I've never dabbled in retrieving and using data from the Internet, much less PDFs. The only way to read the paper online is to read those PDFs, we don't use RSS or anything.
    I know it's probably a lot to think about, but I guess I'm asking how simple or difficult it would be to develop this kind of app, and if it's simple, I'd like some pointers. Thank you in advance.

    The simplest option is to just have a special login page and navigation on your website that you can access directly from Safari, or through a UIWebView and let the user view the pdf's. You may not even need anything custom if the screen flow of you web site is the same as what you want from your app.
    As you become more sophisticated, you can consider downloading the PDF's for local caching and then displaying (if that is even necessary), creating a login screen in your app, and making a webservice call to authenticate, etc.

    My brother uses Jaws, a braille device to read his computer and Iphone.  Jaws does not read a .pdf but it will read a .doc.  What do you suggest?

    PDFs are notorious for being difficult to navigate with a screen reader, because nearly all PDFs are either not remediated for accessibility or poorly remediated. Hopefully that landscape is changing with the proposed new 508 rules, which substantially raise the bar for high quality document accessibility and hopefully will have some legal teeth. Still, JAWS should at least attempt to read any PDF that is not image-only. It should infer the tags if no tags are present. I am not at all familiar with JAWS but it sounds to me like the software may not be configured properly for reading PDFs. The JAWS company Freedom Scientific may be able to help, or posting in a JAWS support forum may yield useful information, or maybe a JAWS expert will chime in here. Sorry I am not able to be of help.

    Your file may be larger than the maximum dimensions for a PDF (not sure what they are, currently). Try working at half-size in ID and see if it makes a difference.

  • IPad 2 shuts down any app trying to open a large PDF (40mb)

    Hi,
    Im trying to get my IPad to display large PDF files from my PC (Windows 7 64bit).  Im using a combination of WD 2 go linked to my NAS (My Book Live with up to date firmware) and also Goodreader.
    Everytime I try and open the PDF file both apps close down.  Ive have this problem with the native PDF reader on the iPad, Ibooks and dropbox.
    Does the IPad have a limitation on the size of PDF than can be imported and displayed?
    My Iphone 4 does the same by the way.
    Any ideas??
    PS, I joined the apple support community in order to write this post - never had to do that before so Im at the point of giving up unless someone knows something I dont!

    Ok, first I should mention I may make $ if you click the link below and purchase items.
    The issue with most general PDFs reader/viewers is they assume you have a paper size of 8.5 by 11.5 inches and a few hundred pages. They are not designed to work with thousands of pages, say medical text books of 8,000 pages. Nor  do they work well if the page size is measured in meters or yard. They either crash or scrolling is so painful you give up.
    Dealing with thoses issues are hard, anyway I try to as my son who is an engineer complained no app could open his engineering drawings, and Dad can you fix that?

  • Large PDF Not Loading in IE over HTTPS

    Hello,
    I am currently experiencing an issue viewing large PDF files using the Adobe Acrobat plugin for Internet Explorer over an HTTPS connection.  After clicking on a link to a large PDF in Internet Explorer, the browser attempts to open the PDF using the Adobe Acrobat Reader plugin.  Partially through loading the PDF the browser plugin hangs and the PDF is not displayed.  The closest article I have found on the issue is on the following community thread: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1019479.  Are there any additional options to resolve this issue other than what is listed in the referenced thread?  Does Adobe have any plans to address this issue in a future release of the plugin?  Forcing a download of the file verus viewing in the browser is currently not an option for me.
    Thanks in advance!

    has anybody come across this issue and found a solution?
    My research found this test to try:
    <HTML>
    <BODY>
    <INPUT type=button onclick=loadmyxml() value="Load XML">
    <SCRIPT>
    function loadmyxml()
    var XMLObj = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLDOM")
    XMLObj.async = false;
    XMLObj.load('gallery.xml');
    if (XMLObj.parseError.errorCode != 0)
    alert("Error loading XML file : " + XMLObj.parseError.reason);
    else
    alert (XMLObj.xml);
    document.write(XMLObj.xml);
    </script>
    </BODY>
    </HTML>
    (and it works!). It pulls in the raw XML data.  But it's static and not what I need it to do. So now i'm not sure if it's specific to Spry or if it's XML in general.
    My page works fine in IE (pulls in dynamic Spry XML content) but ONLY when on HTTP server.... move to HTTPS and it doesn't work anymore.
    Problem is only in IE, and ONLY when on a secure server.
