Reading list icon keeps disappearing

I am using OSX 10.6.8, I use the reading list icon a lot.. the pair of glasses on the left of the toolbar, but it keeps disappearing every day. I have gone into Customize toolbar but it disappears from there also.
Any advise on how or why it keeps vanishing would be more than welcome as frustrating the **** out of me..

Might be corrupted Safari preferences ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, from your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab.
Switch to OFF if there are any installed, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, uninstall one extension at a time until you find the that is causing incompatibility issues with the Reading List.

• Eyeglasses reading list icon

The eyeglasses reading list icon is missing from my toolbar. How do I get it back?

Hi nhollandsmith,
I asked an Apple One to One Instructor about this recently and this is what they told me to do. When you find something you'd like to add to your reading list, first click on the "bookmark" icon in the upper left corner of the toolbar. That will reveal "bookmarks" and the "reading list" glasses icon we're familiar with underneath it. Click on the glasses icon and then just drag the web address down into the reading list column. Hope that helps!

• Reader list icon

How do I get my Reader List icon back on my iPad?

If you are running iOS 6, quit Safari completely and restart the iPad.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus (-) sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

• My icons keep disappearing and then reappearing

I'm new to macs and this problem is confusing me, all of a sudden last night my desktop icons keep disappearing and then they reappear in the same place, but if i have a window open like Macintosh HD it closes it. When this happens it also switches from what im working on, like this message so I have to click back on it to continue.

Cheers

Tony,
You have to reset the parameter ram.

Macintosh: How to Reset PRAM and NVRAM
This document explains how to reset the parameter random access memory (PRAM) and nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM) on Macintosh computers.
Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6. Release the keys.
Your computer's PRAM and the NVRAM are reset to the default values. The clock settings may be reset to a default date on some models

• Where is the "reading list" icon in Safari 8.0.4?

Where is the "reading list" icon in Safari 8.0.4? I need to put it in my menu bar but I can't seem to find it in "Customise toolbar" or "Prefs"

OK, your are looking for "Add to Reading List" button.
It is available by default but hidden.
Move the mouse pointer to the very left in the Safari address bar, a "+" sign in a circle will appear.
Click it to add an item to Reading list.

• After Yosemite upgrade, my reading list icons are gone.

After Yosemite upgrade, my safari reading list icons are gone. I know this is a tiny matter, but finding stuff with a pic is sure easier than reading the list over and over. Any help? I've done the "search" help thing to no avail. I'm not all mr. tech when it comes to apple, but this can't be rocket science. Maybe brain surgery? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Dave

Did anyone ever answer this because I agree that it is a lot easier when looking for a certain site you need ? But strangely some icons do still show in the reading list but not all of them, just a few. Any suggestions ??

• Reading list icon disappeared...

Hi, my harddrive recently died on me. They changed it, and then I used Time Machine to restore my computer. The problem is in Safari, it seems like I lost the icone for ''reading list'' (the glasses icone). I tried to update it but didn't do anything.

Did you check the readinglist prefs on the about:config page?
Note that the "Add page to Reading List" is only visible when you hover the location bar.
"Enter Reader View" will only appear if the content of the web page meets certain conditions.

• Buddies phone/camera icon keeps disappearing

I"m logged onto ichat, but after some time the icons for audio/video chats next to my buddies start disappearing. It doesn't happen to all of them at once or even to certian buddies...it's very random. what causes this and how do i fix it?
macbook pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I'm having the same problem. I noticed it about three days ago but didn't realize the full scope of the issue at that time.
I started troubleshooting it yesterday and discovered that the audio and video icons will disappear when any user in my buddy list has a change in availability. So, if he goes idle, his audio/video icon will disappear. And if he's already idle when I log in and he becomes active again, the audio/video icon will disappear.
The icons come back in three different ways. They'll immediately return if an affected buddy logs off and back on, or I log off and back on. They'll also spontaneously reappear after a period of time.
I'm relieved to hear that other people are having the same problem. It seems to be an issue with the AIM server, and hopefully, it will be resolved soon.

• HT5271 The reading list icon will not work.

I can save to the reading list but but it will not open every time and just keeps getting worse.

Quit Safari. Disable bookmark synchronization, if applicable.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Go to Folder… from the Finder menu bar. Copy the following line into the text box that opens, then press return:
~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the Finder window open. Relaunch Safari. Your bookmark lists will be empty, but they can be recovered. Add a few items to the reading list. Test. Same problem?

• Dock Icons Keep disappearing!

Last week I took all the icons out of my dock leaving only 5 icons, Finder, Mail, Safari, iChat, and Trash. After some time, I tried putting the default icons back in the dock because I was finding it hard to launch apps like iTunes from spotlight or finder. I finished putting my icons back inn place and after 30 seconds, the icons start disappearing in their own! first it went back to 7 icons and then back to the first 5. I tried reinstalling Leopard, restarting my mac and resizing the dock many times but to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

To restore the dock to its original state with original icons goto:
'user' > Library > Preferences
Delete the two files:
com.apple.dock.db
com.apple.dock.plist
Open terminal and type (with caps and space):
Killall Dock
The dock will now be in mint condition.
Hope this helps.

• AirPlay icon keeps disappearing

Hi,
The AirPlay icon has disappeared from the control centre of my ipad and iPhone again. Last time resetting the Apple TV worked but it's long-winded and didn't help this time. All three devices have up to date software, fine connectivity on their own and are on the same wifi. It worked fine a couple of days ago and nothing has changed. I've tried the troubleshooting and there are no settings or messages for airplay not working, it just disappears with no explanation.
Has anyone else had this problem and fixed it? Thanks.
Ben

airplay does not work over the Internet so if your iphone and ipad is not using wifi it will not work
if they are then try restarting your wifi router

Do you mean at the top of Finder windows, in the "Toolbar"?
If so, at some point in the past, you dragged (and dropped) a folder, document, or app icon from a Finder window to the Toolbar area of a Finder window. I guess you did it three times, since there are three question marks now. Where they are located in the Toolbar is where you dropped them. You may have done this unintentionally, while you were dragging an icon between Finder windows.
These are shortcuts; when you click on one in the Toolbar, it opens that folder, document, or app. Since the question marks appeared after you did some housecleaning on the Mac, they were probably shortcuts to three of those pictures or documents. And you maybe you did drop them onto the Toolbar by mistake. No big deal...
To get rid of them now, right (control) click in the Toolbar area. Select Customize Toolbar from the menu. A panel drops down with things you can customize in the Toolbar. With that panel showing, drag each of the three question marks off the Toolbar and release. It goes "poof" and disappears.
Unless you want to make some other changes to the Toolbar, click Done.

• Toolbar icons keep disappearing

Safari 4.0 Mac OS X
I added a few icons from preferences by dragging them to the toolbar yesterday, including a Home button. Today on restart of the machine they are now gone. This happens repeatedly. Has this happened to others and if so what is the fix for it? thanks

Hi Adam
A corrupt preference file seems to be at the root of the "disappearing icons". Via the Finder: Your User Account>Library>Preferences folder. Move the com.apple.safari.plist file to the trash, then restart Safari. This resets Safari preferences to default values. Restore any custom settings in either the Preference panel, Edit (spelling), or View Menu. Also, restore any custom icons.
Also, the reset adds Apple default bookmarks to your Bookmarks collection (command/option/B keys). Delete any you don't want.
