Reading NTSF volumes

Is that true 10.4.11 can read NTSF volumes? In http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NTFS I read that 10.3 and later can read (but not write) NTSF volumes but a search for "NTFS" in Mac help produces no entries.
Just double checking before I take the next step in my project.
Thanks,

  • Solution for reading NTSF format on Mavericks

    This isn't a question but a solution. I searched and worked this issue long enough that I thought some one else might benefit. I migrated my previous job's mac files to a newer mac this summer. That was a switch from Snow Leopard to Mavericks. In the migration I lost my ability to read Windows partitions on my external drives. I had other computers that could, so I didn't sweat it. Today I needed the MacBookPro to read NTSF files and the following link is the solution I found. Happy upgrading!
    http://i.vishalagarwal.com/post/30387627819/ntfs-write-on-lion-or-mountain-lion

    Thanks, though it's very old news.
    That you couldn't read an NTFS drive after upgrading means something is screwed up with your OS X installation. It should always be able to read such a drive with no extra software installed.
    While users have still been having success using the older NTFS-3G / MacFUSE drivers, they're outdated. MacFUSE hasn't been updated since 2012 and isn't officially supported in OS X past Snow Leopard. Users should either get Tuxera's newer paid version of their NTFS driver (does not need MacFUSE to operate), or Paragon NTFS. However, you don't need either of these to only read an NTFS drive.

  • Can Windows no longer read HFS volumes?

    Greetings,
    I have recently installed Boot Camp and Windows 7 on my new (2012) iMac.  So far, so good - no major problems in getting Windows up and running.  However, unlike my older Boot Camp installation, this one does not seem to mount, even read-only, any of my Mac volumes.  Neither the internal fusion (1 TB) drive or an external 2 TB USB3 drive show up.
    Also, possibly related, is that the drives show up in the Boot Camp control panel named "disk 1" and "disk 2" although it does seem to know that OS X is installed on them.  I'm guessing that one of those is the Recovery partition.
    Did Apple remove support for mounting HFS drives in Windows with newer versions of Boot Camp?
    To be honest, I actually prefer the drives to not show up at all but I would like the correct volume names to show up in the control panel.
    Thanks in advance.

    How did you fix this issue? I am running Windows 7 Professional alongside 10.9 on a MacBook Air. For some reason Windows is not seeing the HFS+ Macintosh HD partition.
    I was wondering if Apple stopped including the Windows driver for HFS, but it seems you got it working under 10.8.
    I can say that I was able to get this working in the past on my Late 2007 Black MacBook

  • Unable to read NTFS volume on OS 10.4.7

    Hi All,
    I have an Maxtor drive formated as a NTFS volume, which works well with my PC. It is my understanding that in OS 10.4 (or 3) I should be able to mount this drive as a read-only drive on my Mac. When I connect the drive to the Mac it says that the drive is un-moutable and asks me either to format, ignore or eject. Can anyone help?
    THanks

    Run WhatSize and see what it shows. People have found what should have been 4k in /Volumes only the drive didn't mount, and now there is 60GB under the Volumes directory.
    Look in /private/var for tmp also.
    Any P2P BitTorrent or something running and putting software or video in hidden directories?
    I run fsck regularly, or boot from another drive and repair the drive. Only time I repair permissions is before or after installs, or if the "Ignore Ownership" was turned back on (which should be off).
    25GB is close to 10% free space, which according to MicroMat, is about when hfs+ can run into too many file fragments for the directory to handle, and you end up with a lot or corrupt directory and files aren't available.
    If you have Applejack, delete the cache files, but at least run fsck, and do some deep cleaning for now, backup with CCC, do an erase, zero the drive, and restore. But make sure you have a backup soon.
    Besides WhatSize there is also Path Finder 4 and OmniDiskSweeper than can help identify where disk space is being used.

  • Opening old files on read-only volumes

    I do a lot of demos and presentations with (and about) Adobe Edge Animate, and discovered a flaw when opening files made by older versions, and stored on read-only media (like a remote public volume or folder). The file will open but Animate tries to "upgrade" it by immediately storing a (temporary) copy in the same location. This obviously won't work on locked or read-only media, so the application prompts there's a problem and the file cannot be used.
    Of course I can simply copy the whole folder to my desktop or another location which is write-enableb. But maybe this could be dealt with in a more elegant manner ?

    Hi Peter,
    Thank you for your post.
    We will test this issue and let you the result.

  • Unable to read large volume of file from PI to BW

    Hi,
    I am reading data from PI(XI) to BW using web service data source. The data reach the report if the xml contains less number of records (say 2000-3000) but it does not reach the report if the xml contains more number of data (say 10k).
    I checked in sxmb_moni transaction and the process is always scheduled status and the flag is green.
    Can somebody tell me asto what exactly the issue is?
    The BW version is 7.0.
    Thanks and Regards,

    Hi,
    I'm also trying to integrate bw using webservice DS, but the probem is that even several records can't reach further sxmb_moni (with green flag there). When I use FM (u201C/BIC/CQu201D + DSName) open request appears in RSRDA (yellow) and I can see it in PSA. Then open request in RDA Monitor for DTP should be created, but nothing happens. (Daemon started)
    Could someone help me in such situation?

  • Reading data volume in Set-up tables - LO Purchasing

    Hi Gurus,
    I performed OLI3BW and it took almost a day to complete for HDR, ITM & SCL structures. I would like to know is there a way we can find out volume of records tranferred to set-up tables. I used TCode: NPRT, this is showing only records from EKKO table. Please advise.

  • Reading single volume of a RAID 0 from Windows?

    Hi all I have some RAM that is preventing one of my computers from booting. Some of the drives on the computer were configured as a Linux RAID 0 software array. I'm waiting on replacement RAM and I was wondering if there is a safe way to read from one of the drives. Normally, its possible to just use one of the Windows ext(2/3/4) drives to read ext(#) partitions, but the most that any of them do is see /boot and a bunch of unallocated space.
    I'm thinking of setting up a virtual machine and mounting the drive ro,noload (read only, don't load the journal) in hope that I'll be able to pull some information off of the drive with my T420 over eSATA with the drive mounted in an external eSATA / USB 3.0 enclosure.
    Anyone know if this will work or have a better idea?

  • Avg read time exceeded on data volume

    Dear experts,
    We are currently running MaxDB 7.7.04.29 on Red Hat Linux 5.1 for our BW instance.
    The data and log volumes and SAP binaries are all utilizing NetApp storage, configured on a
    single LUN within a single FlexVol running on a single filer.  I realize this is not the desired
    configuration as both SAP and NetApp recommend separating data, log, and binaries on separate
    LUNs.  We intend to reconfigure per said recommendation.
    That said, do you think this single LUN configuration to be the source of our I/O performance problems?
    If not, what other areas should I investigate?
    We are getting this error from DBAN.prt, results of the db analyzer:
    W2  Avg read time 32.49 ms for 1378 reads on volume /sapdb/BWP/sapdata/DISKD0001

    Hi there!
    From DB point of view, there is no way to tell why the IO performance is bad.
    The best the database can do is to tell that it is bad (or good).
    Anyhow, the setup you described had been one of the 'usual suspects' for IO issues - so, yes it's quite possible that your IO issues are caused by this.
    I'd propose to implement the planned change and check the IO performance again afterwards.

  • Windows 8.0 Volume License machines reboot and windows 8.1 is installed??

    We are a small private university with 484 computers running Windows 8.0 with MAK key.
    This week we have had 2 Windows 8.0 computers spontaneously upgrade to Windows 8.1.
    Since we do have a windows 8.1 MAK key all we had to do was enter the correct key and the computers were fine but everything I am reading about Volume Licensing says that this is not an upgrade path for Windows 8.1.
    Is Microsoft pushing out Windows 8.1 slowly to volume licensed computers on Windows 8.0, or is this just some sort of anomaly that may happen occasionally.
    One of our operators reported that the usual blue banner prompting upgrade appeared the day before but did not have an option on the banner to deny the upgrade.  The next morning when she booted the computer, Windows 8.1 installed and we had to enter
    the 8.1 MAK key and all appears to be well.
    This is not really a complaint, just that we were VERY surprised when it happened, hoping it was not some sort of hack by a third party.

    Hi,
    I don't know how useful this information will be for that many machines. This was also observed on 8.1 Pro, not Enterprise, but here is what I found while doing multiple different upgrades... just so I could figure out how to stop them...
    Windows Update KB2973544 triggers Win 8.1 to automatically install.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2973544
    In addition, KB3008273 appeared in Nov. 2014, which is also related to the automatic installation of Win 8.1...  It actually replaces KB2973544.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3008273
    Windows Update KB2871389 makes Win 8.1 available in the Store, and is a prerequisite for  KB2973544 and\or KB3008273. You might uninstall it also.
    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2871389/en-us
    I have found that the installation of KB2973544 and\or KB3008273 create Scheduled Tasks in Task Scheduler under *** Microsoft \ Windows \Setup***
    They are...** 8.1 Auto Install Ping** and **8.1 Auto Install V2**. They are scheduled for 8pm Daily.
    I clicked on both and selected "RUN", as I didn't want to wait several hours to see what happened... A download started immediately.
    After downloading for about an hour, I restarted the machine to see what would happen... The download resumed quickly after the restart.
    After the download started again, there were two more Scheduled Tasks added to the same location....   **Windows AutoUpdate Setup Resume Task**... which was running, and
    **Windows AutoUpdate Setup Store Resume Task**... which is *Ready*, but has NEVER run.      There was a Service *Modern Setup Host* running in Taskmanager.
    ***I have found that the only way to stop the installation of Win 8.1 once the Scheculed Task ....   **Windows AutoUpdate Setup Resume Task** is indicating "At Logon" for it's Trigger,
    is to end all the tasks showing, starting with that one, and then the ** 8.1 Auto Install Ping** and **8.1 Auto Install V2**.
    After Ending the tasks Delete them...
    After deleting the Tasks, I had to go to C:\ $Windows.~BT, which is a Hidden File, and delete anything that has a recent date... especially the .esd file (Install.esd) of 2.67GB..
    I deleted anything that was newer than one week. You could probably delete everything inside the *Sources*, *Support*, and *Drivers* folders...
    Also uninstall the mentioned KB's, starting with the newest, and doing the KB2871389 last, as it requires a reboot.
    Any attempt to reboot the machine before doing this results in the installation of Win 8.1 starting...
    If you were to End the tasks and disable or delete them while the **Windows AutoUpdate Setup Resume Task** is still showing a
    Date and Time for it's trigger, deleting the $Windows.~BT files may not be necessary.
    The biggest issue with this process is that you may be denied access to the $Windows.~BT folder. If that is the case, you will need to take Ownership of it.
    If you disable and delete the Scheduled Tasks, and uninstall the previously mentioned KB's shortly after selecting *Remind Me Later*
    THE FIRST TIME, the process will be stopped, and it won't be necessary to delete anything in the $Windows.~BT folder.
    You should have about 24 hours to do this.
    After uninstalling the KB's and deleting the scheduled tasks, a new scheduled task has appeared.
    It is *Pre-Staged GDR Notification*, and is scheduled to run at  *8PM of Every Thursday of Every Week*. My guess was that this is to remind you to install the Win 8.1 Update.
    It actually causes another task to be created... *Windows Upgrade Notification Task*... It runs at the *Log On of Any User*
    I couldn't get this task to show a notification. The task ran when I did it manually, but generated an error message in the log... *Specified Module Could Not Be Found  (0x8007007E)  Windows Upgrade Notification*
    This is most likely because the KB's have been uninstalled.
    I'm sure they can be disabled as well, if you want to stop\prevent the reminders.
    I know that once Win 8.1 Update actually installs, those scheduled tasks no longer exist. In fact, the entire SETUP folder disappears.

  • How can I change the permissions on a read only external HD

    I have a WD external HD and I am transferring a file more than 4GB in size. The current partition scheme supported by Ma, being FAT 32, supports only up to 4GB in file transfer size. If I format the external HD on my PC in a NTFS file format it is supposed to handle file transfers bigger than 4GB. Which is true, but it only goes one way, so for example if I am transferring a file from PC to HD to Mac it works just fine, with a few minor hickups, but the other way it does not work at all. So if I want to add anything onto the external HD being hooked up to my Mac, and still being in NTFS format I get a message saying that I do not have sufficient privileges, and under drive info it says that it is read only. Any help on the topic, please.......All the best
    Rafcio

    Hi Rafcio
    I get a message saying that I do not have sufficient privileges, and under drive info it says that it is read only. Any help on the topic, please
    Basically, this is not a privileges problem, it is a limitation of the formats. OS X can read NTFS, but not write it. See How to transfer data from a PC to a Macintosh:
    Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4 work with local NTFS-formatted volumes. The volume will be read-only.
    … and Boot Camp 2.0, Mac OS X 10.5: Frequently asked questions:
    Mac OS X can read and write FAT volumes, but only read NTFS volumes.

  • " the volume for (file name) cannot be found. Insert the disk or connect to the server volume and wait for it to appear on the desktop, then try again."

    I get an error message in iPhoto when I click on thumbnails of pictures in certain albums. It reads 'the volume for "(file name)" cannot be found. Insert the disk or connect to the server volume and wait for it to appear on the desktop, then try again.'  What does this mean and how do I fix it?

    It means that you imported the files in Referenced mode and have now remvoed them from the Mac. Put the disk or card back.

  • Install arch on a read-only filesystem

    Hi to all, I have an idea about installing arch in a particular way, a way that makes the system more secure.
    I want to install a host archlinux system on a hard disk or ssd but I want no data can be written to the storage. The host system will have a predefined set of programs and should use a ramdisk to store temporary data. It is something very similar to a ISO.
    The real computation will be handled through a series of virtualbox instances of linux ( the virtualbox images will be stored on an external hard disk, a read/write volume ).
    How could I achieve this? Through unionfs? AUFS? or some other thing?
    Last edited by pabloski (2011-02-16 16:18:11)

    I want to mount my sda2 read-only and union it with a tmpfs, so the machine is secure and the file system is the same every boot.
    I installed aufs3 with 3.2.6-1-aufs_friendly, I made a hook (as some-guy94 adviced), but it doesn't work.
    The code is:
    1. mkdir -p /root/ro /root/rw
    2. mount /dev/sda2 /root/ro
    3. mount -t tmpfs root.rw /root/rw
    4. mount -t aufs -o "dirs=/root/rw=rw:/root/ro=ro" root.union /
    At 2. it says: "mount: mounting /dev/sda2 on /root/ro failed: No such file or directory" Both files exist - I can list them just before the mount.
    3. & 4. work, but it doesn't matter as sda2 gets mounted rw on / right after (by initramfs's init, I gues).
    Can you help me with this, or point some useful howtos?
    Btw: is there a better way of debugging a hook, other than making the image and rebooting each change?
    Update: This is how they did it in larch: http://git.berlios.de/cgi-bin/gitweb.cg … cpio/hooks
    mount -t ext3 /dev/sda2 /root/ro works now.
    I used exec /sbin/switch_root as in larch3 hook and for loop from /lib/initcpio/init:109 to move /proc /dev /sys /run to the new root
    So the union mount works just fine now, my sda2/sbin/init & sda2/etc/rc.sysinit run, but the latter fails with following:
    * Mounting Root Read-Only - this is actually quite acceptable
    * Starting UDev Daemon
    * Loading Modules
    * Remounting Root Read/Write - acceptable as well
    After boot X opens and system freezes immediately (no reaction to keyboard, doesn't ping). No useful information in logs. I don't think system can run well without udev/modules. So this is udev not liking / mounted rw (as tmpfs is rw) or maybe /dev /proc /sys /run fault.
    I tried to make union mount only in rc.sysinit when /dev/sda2 is already mounted on /, but mount --move / other-dir fails.
    Any ideas what can be wrong?
    My code:
    run_hook ()
    read -p "Union mount root (y/N)? " answer
    if [[ "$answer" == "y" ]]; then
    modprobe aufs
    ro="/root/ro"
    rw="/root/rw"
    un="/root/un"
    rob="${un}/ro"
    rwb="${un}/rw"
    mkdir -p $ro $rw $un
    mount -t ext3 /dev/sda2 $ro
    mount -t tmpfs -o "size=20%" root.rw $rw
    mount -t aufs -o "dirs=${rw}=rw:${ro}=ro" root.union $un
    mkdir -p $rob $rwb
    mount --bind $ro $rob
    mount --bind $rw $rwb
    mkdir ${un}/media
    mkdir ${un}/sys
    mkdir ${un}/proc
    mkdir ${un}/dev
    /bin/mknod ${un}/dev/console c 5 1
    echo "rootfs / rootfs rw 0 0" >${un}/etc/mtab
    [ -z "${init}" ] && init="/sbin/init"
    if [ -e "${un}/${init}" ]; then
    mount
    read
    for d in proc sys dev run; do
    if [ -d ${un}/${d} ]; then
    mount --move /${d} ${un}/${d}
    else
    umount /${d}
    fi
    done
    exec /sbin/switch_root -c /dev/console ${un} ${init} ${CMDLINE}

  • Explanation / use of read-only zoning feaure on MDS products

    Does anyone know if the MDS product line will work in this way when licensed with the Enterprise option for the read-only zoning?
    I am trying to come up with a solution to provide real-time access to database files for a 2nd server that facilitates reporting applications. If I have LUNs that contain my primary database data and log volumes mapped to one server and create a 2nd read-only zone containing those LUNs, can I map those LUNs to a 2nd server as a kind of virtual/snapshot type instance?
    I know that this will throw some odd things at the application side as it may or may not recognize the LUNs at read-only and could store things in temp tables or memory that would be cached and not actual current data but we've dealt with that in our reporting applications in the past utilizing snapshot technology on our storage platform. The downside to using that is in updating the snapshot to more recent copies, you have to at least offline the database to create a new snapshot with the same name/location which introduces interruptions, timeouts, etc.
    Any feedback on how the read-only zoning feature is supposed to perform this type of functionality and/or real-world examples of how you are using it would be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Justin Loucks

    I guess I'm not sure how to read some of this when it references different versions of SAN-OS code and Operating system levels. For instance, in the documenation for SAN-OS 3.0, I found the following:
    Read-only volumes are not supported by some operating system and file system combinations (for example, Windows NT or Windows 2000 and NTFS file system). Volumes within read-only zones are not available to such hosts. However, if these hosts are already booted when the read-only zones are activated, then read-only volumes are available to those hosts.
    From -- http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps5989/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a0080662d35.html#wp1136509
    Does this mean that as long as it is not my OS boot volume it may work? Also, it references NT and 2000 but not Windows 2003. Perhaps that is something that works differently now. I guess I'll open a case with MS on that to see what they say.
    If anyone has already tried this or knows differently, please let me know. I just want to make sure I've exhausted all options here before I resort to Log shipping or some other software based solution.
