Reading userbit track / sound synch

Sorry I've been looking for this info but can't find it...
Can FCP (version 5) read the userbit track on the HDCAM-SR tape?
My general procedure for working with the format in the past has been to record linear TC in the regular TC track and TOD TC from the sound mixer on to the userbits (and 2nd audio channel) for sound synch. This way, the unbroken TC makes it easier for digitizing, however, before was working with avid and unsure if I can do it with FCP.
What other method can someone suggest? is there a "group by timecode" function in FCP?
There is no transfer house as it will be a fully native HD 23.98 sequence.
Thank you.
Best,
-felipe.

I don't know of a way to tell FCP to read the userbit track...

  • Itunes stops working as soon as it reads first track while importing CD (APPCRASH). Need help!

Itunes stopped working error comes up as soon as it reads first track while importing CD and needs to close program (APPCRASH). I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes several times - also ran CD diagnostics in iTunes and looks OK. I'm on Vista Home Premium Edition. If it will help I saved the CD Diagnostics from ITunes and the Windows APPCRASH info. I've spend several hours trying to figure this out. Any ideas?

Problem solved! I had my pc plugged into a port replicator to use a bigger screen, etc. When I unplugged it and tried to import the CDs it worked fine. Not sure why I got the error but whenever I get unexpected errors in the future, I will take it off the replicator to eliminate that possibility. Thanks to all who reviewed.

  • Nokia OVI Suite Error - Unable to read the tracks

I have puchased Nokia X6, which comes with unlimited music download. I have registered my PC with this subscription and downloaded music from the store.
However recently the Nokia OVI suite Software 3.0.0.290 gives a  error on clicking the Music section - Operation Failed "Unable to read the tracks"

I have OVI Suite 3.1.1, and a Nokia 5230, which works with OVI suite only while there is no Micro SD card in the phone.  This was the same with OVI 2, as well.  WIth the card inserted, the /private/10208913 folder is regenerated every time the card is plugged back into the phone, and a "New Hardware Detected - MTP" message appears every minute or so, which also denies accessing the phone through windows explorer despite selecting the Mass Memory Mode. I've been unable to load any new music to the phone for months, despite countless retries.
I have win XP, and a crumbling confidence in Nokia.  A tragedy that I have bought an X6 for the other half, which I have not had time to set up yet, and another 5230 for my father which was also several days toil of installs and reinstalls of OVI Suite and OVI Music on a Vista PC.  Nokia OVI just seems like nothing but constant hard work, and what I could have earned in overtime would have paid for a much slicker product.  Unless Nokia can sort this out, rather than relying on discussion groups to try to help user groups resolve what seems to be a flakey product, from my limited experience, I don't hold out much hope for this product line.

  • Microphone calibratrion for dB reading from pc sound card?

We are trying to acquire a sound signal from a regular laptop sound card into labview, and obtain a sound intensity reading and a frequency reading. Through FFT we are able to acquire the strongest signal, but the dB readings are all over the map. Using a sound generator we were able to conclude the frequency readings were indeed correct, but the sound intensity was way off, and non-repeatable. So what I'm looking to know is if it is possible to calibrate the mic within labview or to read in a sound level measurement in dB with a regular PC mic and sound card. Even if it was a gain measurement, how do set the baseline for 0 dB? Please help!
    thanks

A computer sound card is simply a low cost audio input/output. Low cost means that it has usually no calibration options at all, and even if it had, Windows would not know how to access it and even less so allow an application to use it through a known API.
So you have to do your calibration yourself in software. The way that works is to apply a known signal, measure the sound signal in Volts and then calculate a calibrarion function that translates those Volt into the dB you know you have applied. Additional problems could be that the analog path on your sound card is good enough for the human ear, but totally useless for measurement purposes, since the amplifier transfer function is anything but constant over the frequency range. Also sound measurements with cheap microphones is another big problem, since those microphones are at best a guessimator, but no accurate measurement device.
Basically you have to do the calibration repeatedly at the same frequency and also at various frequencies too, in order to see if the microhone is actually useful at all (repeatability of calibration value at the same frequency), as well as reasonaby constant over the frequency range for both the mic and the sound card.
With most standard sound cards none of this is a given, and unless you also use a really good microphone, even the most accurate sound card can't do much for you.

  • 16mm film in FCP - sound synch.

I am making a working edit of a 16mm film in FCP. Once complete the EDL will
be used by a neg cutter and the project will be finished as 16mm show print.
All the sound was recorded wild and although most is not in need of a tight
synch. there are short spoken sections that must be lip synched.
In FCP we have both video and audio, but the runs faster than the audio and
    a lip synch. is impossible.
We telecined to DigiBeta but also laid the picture off to DVCam (with TC and
Frame Numbers in pic.). We captured from the DVCam into FCP. In ignorance we
did not pay attention to the capture rate or the frame rate of our sequence,
so used 25 frames for both. We want to do as much work in FCP as possible to
produce a sound track mixed down onto DAT for the production of a optical
soundtrack neg. FCP is helping us make decisions for the neg. cutter but is
not usuable as a guide to edit the audio.
This may be a problem of our own making but any advice as to how to get out
of this impasse would be much appreciated.
    G4-dual 1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

    Many thanks.
We telecined to PAL video (UK). Does this still use 3:2 pulldown? or a different system? Cinema tools doesn't offer Reverse Telecine for changing PAL 25 fps to 24 fps, but it does have a Conform tool which allows me to do something similar (I think). Will this have the same effect and bring the video back to match the film and audio speed as it was recorded (24fps)?
If you are going to cut the negative you'll need
something more than an EDL. EDLs track the xfer tape
timecode, you need to give the negative cutter
keycode number from the negative. You can xfer with
keycode burn in for this. Is that what you did? Talk
to your negative cutter and see what they want.
Yes I think we did. We have two counters burnt in vision on our DVCam dub. One is TC (from the telecine) the other has the suffix FN (frame number?). We will talk with our TX guy for confirmation. However these FN numbers do not appear in the FCP EDL - is it possible to generate an EDL in FCP that references the frame numbers/Keycode?
Again thanks, any more info on using Cinema Tools with PAL material would be welcome.

  • Loops in tracks sound muddled

    Hi
I have a problem with my loops. They play ok in the browser, but when I move them to a track they sound like they are muffled or under water. Any ideas what could be going on? Are instrument libraries part of the installation? I can't find any documnetation on where loops or libraries are supposed to be or contain.
    thanks

    Yes, best I can tell.
In addition to all the loops, is there any requirement for all the instrument libraries? What it sounds like is that only a portion of the data for the track shows up. Is there a way to tell if a loop needs supporting data to function as a track. It is odd that it plays ok in the browser, but not in the track.

  • Exporting From Final Cut to Quicktime - Sound Synch Issues

    Hi
Just wondering if anyone can help me - I have created a 15minute piece - everything is working & looking fine in Final Cut Pro - I export it into a .MOV file via the Quicktime compressor - then watching it through at about 10 minutes the footage appears to 'cut' and from then on the sound is out of synch...
Not really too sure why this is or what has happened - on the timeline the footage in question has no cuts or anything...
I am a little stuck and would appreciate any ideas!
    Thanks

The apple page (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164931) only gives a partial answer. First, if you are making it to watch on TV make sure you use the "title safe" setting in the canvas. You will get two blue boxes. The outer box shows what will appear on your TV screen, and I have found it to be pretty true. I have found that for my videos I need to set the scale to 90% (found under motion on the viewer) to fit the frame. I also put in chapter markers because it lets me jump around as I wish.
Next, when you go to export, Choose QuickTime movie. At the bottom of the window are three pop-up menus, settings, include, and markers. The last two are easy. Under "include" you want "Audio and Video". Under "markers" choose chapter markers if you made any. Under "setting" you can choose what you want, but I like to go to "custom" because it shows me exactly what all the settings are. For the video setting in the U.S. you want DV/DVCPRO - NTSC.
As the Apple page says, do not select "Make Movie Self-Contained." If you are going to import it into iDVD a self contained movie is pointless. It also takes much longer to export. A movie that took 35 to 40 minutes to export as a self contained movie took 5 minutes when I unchecked the box. Also, self-contained movies take up a whole lot of space.

When I connect my ipod via usb to my home theatre it recognizes the ipod but says I don't have any tracks.  I upgraded the software on both itunes and ipod but it still doesn't work.

  • Final Cut why music track sounds badly compressed?

I have a music track that sounds just great if I listen to it under Quick Time Pro,  However, that same song simply imported in Final Cut then added to a project sounds like a pumping compressor, destroying the song completely.  Why Final Cut cannot simply use it the way it is rather than adding an additional (badly set) audio compressor ?

    Hi,
It wasn't clear to me if you're just playing the project on the timeline or the problem only happens after exporting it? Which could make a difference.
The only way FCPX should change your audio, automatically, is if the settings for Audio are setup in settings under Import
You can check if this has been done on your audio by selecting the audio file in the timeline and checking the Audio Enhancements section - like this screenshot below.
Click on this Audio Analysis button to check any automatic adjustments - and turn them off, if necessary.
If that's not set to anything, then it would have to be a bug of some kind. I've had issues with audio when exporting only (played fine in the timeline)
How are you importing by the way. Does it happen if you just create a new project and drag the file in from Finder straight onto the timeline?

  • Sound Synch problems

I've got a 18minute SD PAL project that I've put together in FCP, exported through compressor (60min high quality widescreen mpg2) and put into its own DVD Studio project. It's the only track (therefor the first play) with no menu.
The problem is, on playing the resulting DVD, the sound and image is gradually shifting out of synch and becomes noticable by about 12-14 mins in and is plain wrong by the end of the film.

  • Saved backing track sounds out of tune

    Hi everyone,
I am having problems recording external audio (a backing track with drums and keyboards) from my synthersizer to Garageband. Sometimes when I do this it is saved successfully but it sounds out of tune and I am not sure why this is?
My synthersizer is connected to my apple computer with an audio cable and I always try to make sure that the tempo of the track on my Korg Triton Extreme synthersizer is the same as the tempo/speed on the track I have created on Garageband.
Any advice about this matter would be gratefully received.
    Many thanks.

Sculpture is not like other synths, period. One can't assume it obeys the laws of traditional subtractive or FM synthesis. The beast acts like a string. If the tension is slack, like putting a .07 string on the first string of a guitar, the note will be flat when struck and then become more in tune as is decays. Sculpture requires a lot of tweeking time to understand. The string tension, density and resolution are critical parameters. The higher or lower the note requires settings to couteract out of tune notes via these parameters. There are also "residual" effects that happen, perhaps even bugs. For instance, sometimes a reverb from the end of a track that had not finished it's tail before stopping, will be continued when the track is started from the beginning again. Sculpture has these residual effects but they can take different forms. Sculpture takes into account the vibrations of any note previous to a note played. That's to say if you play a note fresh with no note having been played before it, it will sound different if you played the same note and there had been a note played previous to it because it understands there are vibrations already happening which it encompasses into the new vibrations. So if there are vibrations still tailing off and you hit stop, those vibrations may act again at the beginning of the song and change the tuning of the first few notes. To make sure this doesn't happen, extend the song end and let any tails of synthesis or reverbs to complete before starting the song again. That being said, you will never get the same sound twice with Sculpture, it will play differently every time! It's almost human. Lovely synth, my friend.

  • Sound synching issues

    Hi,
I have a movie clip which has sound placed on the stage, set
to STREAM. This is in a SWF which is being loaded into my main site
    - when I play the SWF on it's own it synchs fine - it stops when
the timeline stops as it should. But when it's loaded into the new
movie it no longer synchs. The SWF is being pulled into a component
(SlideShowPro) so perhaps it's just a bug? But if you know of
anything I might do to fix it that would be great,
    Thanks
    Ponch

    A couple of ideas...
    1. Framerate difference issues. If the framerate in your .swf
with audio is different from the framerate in the swf that holds
the slideshow component, then that may be causing some problems.
    2. File length issues. I have noticed that, when using audio
in Flash over a long period of time (excess of 1000-2000 frames)
the audio will often get out of sync. Also, if there is excessive
animation (lots of data to process) this can also knock off the
    audio sync.
    3. There are sometimes issues with audio that has an audio
level that is not a multiple of 22,050. For example, I recently had
audio that was encoded to 48 KHz, and it played back a little
slower in flash, and when I converted that file to CD quality
    (44,1) it played fine.

  • Adobe Reader X Tracker Notifications

    Hi,
does enyone know how to disable/uncheck enabled by default "Show notification icon in system tray" in Preferences-Tracker - Notifications by Group Policy/using registry/or any other way?
Found in registry record - HKCU-Software-Adobe-Adobe Synchronizer-10.0-bShowNotification , change from 1 to 0 - launch Adobe Reader and this record goes back to 1.
Possible somewhere else is written this value.
googling and searching in this fourum doesn't brought any results.
    Thanks in advance.

Try using a different web browser. I was having this same problem when I was using Firefox, but then tried it in Opera and it worked like it was supposed to. I guess Adobe was in too much of a rush to release another product that they neglected to make sure it worked...They would get an 'F' in a software engineering course.

I am also having the same problem with about 200 of my MP3s. The tag info shows up perfectly using QuickLook on Leopard, but in iTunes I can't see any of the info. I have tried converting the ID3 tag version, revesing the unicode....nothing.
    Have you had any luck?

  • Failed read from Extech sound meter

I am attempting to communicate with an Extech 407764 sound level meter via RS232. The manual contains the instruction set on the last page (see here under User Manual). I also have a stand-alone software application they sent with the device, but I want to create my own. I am able to write to the device and change setting on it, for example. However, I cannot read from the device. I attempted to debug my problem using portmon, and there are some differences between my program and the stand-alone one, but I'm not sure what might be causing the problem, or how to change it. Below are two portmon logs: one from their program, and one from mine. I have portmon set to output HEX instead of ASCII. The noticable differences to me are the FLUSH after the WRITE request, and the XOnLimit/XOffLimit settings, but maybe those are red herrings. Also, I don't know how to change that from within LabVIEW. There seems to never be any bytes available at the port to read. I'm hoping someone can point me the right direction. I have also attached my simple VI which is a modification of the Serial Read/Write example with a loop added. I'm writing a space each time (Hex 20) because their program appears to be doing it as well.

Thanks for the idea. I tried changing to XON/XOFF, and that didn't seem to help. I went through all 4 different flow control options and none of them appeared to fix the issue. These changes don't seem to appear in port monitoring logs. Is there an other way to determine the flow control being implemented? Or even to determine if that might be my issue?
I also noticed that the XOnLimit and XOffLimit for the stand-alone software seems to be 10 (bytes?), but I cannot seem to set a value that low using the SetBufferSize VI under VISA; they seem to only go as low as 16.
I'm not sure if again I am pursuing a red herring with this or not. I appreciate the advice.
