Reading while Writing on SSDs vs HDDs

So, I've always heard that reading and writing to an HDD is not good, as it slows down the whole process (this is in video rendering for Premiere Pro).
So, I know that SSDs are quite a bit different.  I'm assuming that reading and writing occurring on 1 SSD during rendering isn't going to be nearly as much of a problem as it would be happening on 1 HDD.  However, I'm unsure of this.  Am I correct in my assumption?  If not, what kind of performance degradation might occur, would it be noteworthy, and how comparable would it be to that of an HDD?

Yes, in addition.....current high quality SATA III SSDs that have the best controllers in them  for video editing, ( like the Crucial M550, or, the more expensive Samsung 850pro), will not suffer from "fill degradation"....losing performance as the drives becomes more full. Also, the RELIABILITY ....especially on the Samsung 850 Pro....is WAY higher for the SSDs, than mechanical spinning drives.....allowing those quality SSDs to be considered for RAID 0 usage with a much lower risk.
What you are getting at is the nature of the SATA interface itself......it is a "half-duplex" interface, which means it CANNOT write while READING...and vice-versa. It's like an old walkie-talkie radio....when you push the button to speak and transmit...you cannot RECEIVE anything ,until you let the button go. So, YES ,that "half-duplex" handicap is still there.....BUT, SSDs reduce its effect with their MUCH faster read and write speeds AND their drastically lower "latency", as Eric has said.
There ARE places to connect storage devices, especially on the new Haswell E X 99 motherboards, which are "full duplex"...allowing reading and writing at the SAME TIME.  However, the storage devices to take advantage of this higher speed and full duplex connection currently are much more expensive than SATA devices. M.2, , SATA "Express", and PCI card storage devices can be used.....but, currently at high expense and limited capacity.
With X99...one option is to take advantage of the huge amount of SATA !!! ports on the motherboard and just create RAID 0 with SSDs for storage..or, use cheaper HDDs, with a large "enterprise level" 7200rpm HDD to BACK UP the HDD RAID0 array !

  • JMF Read While Writing

    Hello, my fellow programmers
    I have one delicate problem with JMF. I develop video streaming from file. So one Thread is reserved for creating JMF player
    player=Manager.createPlayer(Manager.createDataSource(new MediaLocator(f.toURI().toURL())));
    player.addControllerListener(this);
    player.start(); //AUTOSTARTThe second Thread is reserved for sending UDP packages. The main question is how to read packages that has been transmited while file isn't completed- fileWriter.close();
    I want to play JMF player over not yet completely transmitter video file.
    Thanks in advance!

    You're having problems because you're not using JMF's functionality correctly.
    First, if you're wanting to stream JMF, you should be using either a DataSink or the RTPManager interface to handle RTP streaming.
    [http://java.sun.com/javase/technologies/desktop/media/jmf/2.1.1/solutions/AVTransmit.html]
    Second, if you're wanting to save a JMF file you're receiving, you should be using a DataSink.

  • Disc error -43 occurred while reading or writing to a scratch disk.

    "Disc error -43 occurred while reading or writing to a scratch disk.  Sorry, but this error is unrecoverable."
    What does this mean, and how can I fix it?
    I assume it affecting my performance if PS is not able to write to the scratch disc???
    I get the error every time I shut down Photoshop.
    Attached are my settings.

    It means that the OS says there was an error with your hard disk.
    You need to check the disk for problems, and make sure you have your data backed up before continuing.
    It could be a one time thing (especially if the SMART system remapped the bad block), but could also be an indication of serious problems with the disk if it recurrs.

  • SSD as system disk while users folder + data on HDD

    Hey there, I want to install SSD in my Mac Pro and since its only 120GB - use it only for system and Apps. While all my user data (photos, movies, music random files) I want to store on my HDD. Is it possible to do it that way, so the system knows where it should put Apps and where downloaded content and all the other stuff should go?

    ~/Library is hidden unless you unhide. It HAS to exist where user accounts are.
    The link is not what you want, it is hybrid SSD Fusion HDD setup.
    I leave ~/Library where it is, right, and don't worry and just link to other hard drive - after playing and trying to move user account to another drive, I swap boot drives a lot and it was easier.
    NetInfo and later Accounts control panel and now is it "Users"? but it is easy for anyone to point to another disk drive.

    Unfortunately, no. In order to convert the drive to FAT32 it must be re-partitioned which is a destructive process.

    File f = new File("Angel.txt");
         if(f.length() >=4)
         f.delete();
    fos = new FileOutputStream("Angel.txt");
    dos = new DataOutputStream(new BufferedOutputStream(fos,1000000));
    int x=0;
    double y_last, y_new;
    for(int j=0 ;j<i ;j++)
    if(some condition)
    y_new = ....;
    try{
    //previously in vectors
    y_last = y_new;
    vect.add(new Line2D.Double(x, y_last, x, y_new)_;
    dos.writeDouble(y_new);
         }catch(Exception e){System.out.println(e);}

         raf = new RandomAccessFile("Angel.txt","r");
         dis = new DataInputStream(new BufferedInputStream(new FileInputStream(raf.getFD(),1000000)));

         raf.close();
    }catch(Exception excp){System.out.println(excp);}
    I tried using Object Streams but NotSerializable Exception is thrown as Line2D.Double objects
    are not serialized.
    Any idea to make reading and writing into file specially from MB files faster is appreciated.

    Why are you reading in the file in the paint method ?
    Create your data once before painting.
    I think you should explain what is your goal and what behavior you want.

  • Setting up a new SSD and HDD on iMac with separate libraries (itunes & aperture)

    Hello.
    I'm having a major problem with my iMac (July 2010 27" 2.8ghz).  I recently operated on this guy and installed a 2TB HDD and a 256GB SSD.  I backed up my previous setup using CCC onto a separate external HDD.  I installed a "fresh" version of OSX Mountain Lion onto the SSD and used Migration Assitant to transfer my applications and user settings. I then copied over the itunes folder and photos library folder over to the HDD.  However, I cannot access the libraries of either using the SSD.  I hold option down while opening either Aperture or Itunes and I am not allowed to select either of the libraries.  Infact the iTunes one is grayed out and the folder holding the Aperture Library is locked (Red circle with a white dash).
    Ultimately what I want to do is have the SSD provide the system and the applications and have my music, videos, and photos on the HDD.  I have been reading all sorts of boards but I can't get anything to work.  I'll completely start from scratch if needed.
    BTW the SSD is so fast on this machine.
    Thanks in advance for all of your help.
    Matt

    The original folders for iTunes and Aperture Photo Library were marked with special Access Control List permissions. CCC picked these up during the duplication process to the HDD. When you put them back on the SSD, you likely used Finder, which either corrupted these settings or omitted them entirely. Now, iTunes and Aperture expect these ACL settings and block you without them.
    To fix this issue, you need to reset the ACL on these folders back to factory defaults. Disk Utility cannot help as it works on things outside $HOME.
    Reboot, holding down the option key. You will see the SSD, the HDD, and probably two 10.8 recovery partitions. Pick either recovery partition.
    Once you are in Recovery, launch the Terminal from the Utility menu.
    In Terminal, type resetpassword. This will launch a dialog box that shows both the SSD and HDD drives. Click on the SSD.
    At the bottom of the dialog, you will see the reset ACL section. Click to set ACL back to default settings. This is only applied to specific files in your home directory that already have ACL settings. You are not resetting any passwords.
    You are done. Exit terminal, and reboot from the Apple menu.
    Test iTunes and Aperture on their respective folders.
    This should solve your access issues on the SSD.
    You can identify files or folders with ACL settings from the terminal with the ls(1) command.
    See if the file has an ACL setting
    $ ls -al
    You are looking for the trailing '+' in the permission field.
    Now peek at the specific ACL settings
    $ ls -ale
    You should use the ditto(1) command for low-level directory structure copies in the future.
    $ ditto /Volumes/HDD/Users/homedir/Music /Users/homedir

  • 512 ssd vs 256 ssd 750 hdd 7200rpm?

    Hi I read that several people configure 256gb ssd + 750gb hdd 7200rpm, cause they use the  ssd for applications and the hhd for storage. But in general you
    will be working with both of them right? example whatch a movie. The program is on ssd but the movie is on hdd. So it will load faster on a plain 512 ssd or 2x256 ssd?

    Ralph your response is way off. The answer to OP's question mostly depends on write performance of the SSD, especially after the SSD has become full and the OS is starting to erase previously deleted (but not yet fully erased) blocks. That is when the SSD starts to slow down, and then the TRIM feature of SSD controller needs to be benchmarked. To answer the OP's question, one needs to run benchmarks of various use cases, especially against an aged SSD.
    I found this question myself googling for answers to same topic. Most benchmarks do not seem to be testing aged SSDs, but brand new out of the box SSDs that will usually smoke even 7200RPM drives. But what happens 3 months later after the SSD virgin blocks have been written to at least once and then it starts it slow erase cycles?
    Read performance of the SSD will always be faster than the 7200RPM drive, esp when comparing random access or fragmented file system accesses. So why does write performance matter if you aren't, for example, doing heavy write tasks like saving video files? Because the OS does tons of little random reads AND writes just sitting there... anything you do like open a new browser tab or start a Flash player will open up temp files for writing... so write performance becomes quite important if writes start to get really slow for any reason.
    edit: some anecdotal evidence that aging the SSD is not slowing down write for modern SSDs vs the bad experience I had with 1st gen SSDs.

    hi,

    but while writing these files - with the help of  fileupload control - and when i use  myfileupload.saveas(mylocation);
    - i am saving these files into my D:\ drive of my server , where i am executing my code -, am getting access denied error.
    it throws system.unauthorizedexception.
    i have given full control on that folder where i was trying to store my attached files. and also  after following asp.net forums,
    i have added  iusr group added and performed all those steps such that, the file is saved in my D:\ drive.
    but unfortunately  that didnt happen.
    also
    a) i am trying the code with runwithelevatedprivileges(delegate() )  code
    b) shared the drive within the  d :drive where i want o save the files.
    c) given the full privieleges for the app pool identity- in my case , its

    the  other strange thing is that, the same code works perfectly in  other machine, where the same sp, vs 2012  etc were installed .

    Was writing post, as part of sharing article from my newsfeed.   While writing, Facebook timed out.  Display cleared.  App recycled and returned to newsfeed.  This has happened previously and for all purposes, the original post, since it had never been "loaded" onto FB servers effectively was deleted from iPad memory.  That appeared to be the case yesterday; as I was able to continue reading, sharing and commenting on other articles.
    Later, as I was shutting iPad down for the night, scrolled through open Apps and discovered the original FB window was still "open" I'd apparently been working on a 2nd or mirror version of the app.  Attempting to access the original page; it opens, but I am unable to "interact" with the display/app, pressing "cancel" on my original post has no effect.  Within 5-6 seconds FB crashes.
    I power failed the iPad, left it over night and today am encountering the same problem.   Tapping FB icon, brings up the post that was timed out.  It displays for 2-3 seconds max, then original article and partial post disappear.  Newsfeed appears to be loading as that and contact columns are visible in light font indicating they are preparing to load.   2-3 seconds, that vanishes.  Am left with blue header band, spinning wheel indicating it is trying to communicate or process something.   2-3 seconds and then screen goes black and I'm returned to my app desktop.
    If I immediately tap icon to reopen I get white screen, with blue header band.   2-3 seconds, black screen, back to app desktop.   If I wait 2 minutes, I get the full shared article, partial post as described above.  I've confirmed in the problem log that this is failing in Thread 0 and showing up as system crash.
    Based on feedback to somewhat similar FB problem I found in forum; in addition to doing power fail.  I also did warm reboot (Home and Sleep keys) in hope app would reboot along with ios.  No change.
    At this point, I'm assuming my only viable option is to delete the app and reinstall it from App Store.  Easy enough to accomplish.  But wanted to see if there were any other recommendations, or whether anyone else has experienced a similar failure with FaceBook.
    Thanks for your assistance.

    Hi,
    i' m working on jdeveloper 10.1.3.1.0 and when i want to add a partner link to my BPEL project i get 'error while writing wsdl file' 'exception null' error then i couldn't create file.
    so how can i solve this problem?
    HELP:)

    Once the wrapper procedure is created by the adapter, the adapter does a second search to obtain the information about the wrapper (i.e. parameters, their data types, etc.). What's likely happening here is that the wrapper is getting created, but the adapter can't find it. The XSD is based on the wrapper, so if it can't be found, then no XSD can be generated. Try removing the existing wrapper package or choose that option in the wizard when it generates a new one.

    Hi there,
    Have you verified the suggestions in the error message?
    Cannot open file: C:\oracle\OraBPELPM_1\integration\jdev\jdev\mywork\BPEL_Import_with_Dynamic_Transformation\WORKDIRS\SampleImportProcess1\input for writing.
    Please ensure
    1. Specified output Dir has write permission
    2. Output filename has not exceeded the max chararters allowed by the OS and
    3. Local File System has enough space
    I am also curious why you are writing to a directory with the name "..\SampleImportProcess1\input" ?

    We are running FM version 7.2b144 on MS Win xp Pro (32 bit), and I did not notice this until service pack 3 was installed. I believe I have found a work around to the situation and another contributing cause. If graphic files are placed directly in an anchored frame instead of importing by reference, the file somehow becomes misplaced. If you right click the graphic and open the Object Properties dialog box, and see the phrase "no referenced file" below Main Editor: Referenced File: in the lower left hand corner, this has happened. I found if I removed all graphics files without references and imported them by reference, the source file may then be properly saved. I am also using a program called CCleaner, which removes cookies, temp files, browsing history and the like from a system. If the program settings are chosen too aggressively, and the application runs when FM has a file open, this same error will occur, even if all files are referenced properly. I don't know if SP3 has some similar application which is now running in the background and causing this.
    To summarize, if you want to retain SP3, I have eliminated this error by confirming the links to referenced graphics files and avoiding using 3rd party "cleaners" while FM is open.

  • Rendering error while writing to file...Quicktime

    Hi all,
    I am brand new here and have an urgent question. I have been getting an error in After Effects CS6 whenever I try to render to a quicktime movie that says "Rendering error while writing to file...An output module failed. The file may be damaged or corrupted."
    I have spent days trying to fix this and I have read other peoples posts with the same question but I have cleared my disk cache and reinstalled quicktime without success.
    Any help would be great I am not super technology advanced so try to keep it simple if you can.
