Reading wmf files

Just switched computers and viewing WMF files is really spotty. I could read them before but half of them now just have a default icon. What's wrong with this picture. Yet another bug to add to the pile?

garyoa1,
I ran across your remarks while searching for a solution to Bridge 3's very erratic handling of some file formats:
"But the point is, if you've never used the freeware and shareware viewers, you've no idea how badly bridge functions. And one would think a $1500 suite of programs would do just a tad better than a free program. As far as bridge being better in CS4... haven't tried it yet, but there's no way they could make it worse."
That really sums it up. I use Bridge 3 extensively for my photographic image workflow--and literally never have a problem, and I do about 2500 RAW images a week for clients. It definitely is a much improved Bridge to PSCS4. With Premiere, it is another story altogether.
I also do professional videography and editing. Bridge 3 is an absolute writeoff with AVIs. 90% of the time it will not produce thumbnails for clips cut in Premiere, it frequently crashes trying to play back large clips, it frequently locks up when using it to copy multiple clips from one directory to another, it hangs on mpegs,it will not keyword some clips, and on and on. Useless, in a word.
All the cache purges, preference killing, and other workarounds simply do not work. Since I have no problems with very large image scans (2-400 megs) or photographic images, and no trouble with AVIs on other browsers or image management apps, I have to conclude that it is just lousy coding and QA at Adobe, something that is emerging as a sub text trademark over the last few years. Anyone who has been involved with the numerous problems with Lightroom over the last two years and the present issues with PSCS4 will immediately recognize the issue. Thankfully, LR 2.3 and ACR 5.3 are now finally, relatively, stable and reliable.
Ironically, I have had to turn to MS for a solution to my Bridge problems. Microsoft Expression 2 (formerly Iview), works flawlessly with video clips, has more useful professional features, handles more formats, and provides much faster workflow. It has solved all my Bridge video clip problems!
With Premiere, Bridge 3 is simply a Bridge to Nowhere. Users have a right to expect more of Adobe's very expensive applications. A creative suite without a Bridge that truly will act as a trouble free bridge that supports all the formats that the CS components will process is crippled.

  • Cannot open .wmf files in CS 5.5 InDesign

I Receved the following message; Cannot open the file logo.wmf. Adobe InDesign may not support the file format a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing or the file may be open in another application; which it is not.  I am lookinig for a solution; so I can do my online InDesign class.

You should not use a WMF file anyway in InDesign, try to get a PDF, AI or EPS version, then place this file. WMF is supposed for office printer to use in Word or other Office programs, not for high end print production or PDF creation at all.
If you get a PDF version, don't ise any which was converted from the WMF file!

  • Illustrator - WMF files

    Hi,
I would like to know what the go is with Illustrator and exporting to wmf files?
    What has happened is this.
I have an illustrator file which i have a logo and text(an A4 letter head), which i am working with.
I have it saved as an .AI file (illustrator). I then exported it as (from File menu then Export) and saved it as an wmf file - i use wmf file as this logo and text/letter head will be going into a Word document, so from research today through the web, i am using wmf file to import into Word 2007 - possibly be used in other versions of word, like older versions also - though i have one question here also - do i use .WMF file to use as a logo and text(a single graphic) in WORD, or is there a more suitable format, say, pdf, .eps? or another graphic format which WORD will accept and retain the quality of the image?
OK,  now i have exported my file, first time the letterhead came out scratchy and edgy, say very poor quality, next time i resized the logo in illustrator to maek it bigger, see if there was any difference, then i exported it to .wmf, THIS time it came out a lot better, the lines were smooth etc. The THIRD time i did it, it came out a lot better, much better quality(having rezsized it to be larger in illustrator). After i did this again, the file went back to the first image quality poor for some reason, i tried another 6-7 times and the same result, pixelated/not smooth and poor.
So this is my dillemma, illustrator is mucking about for some reason, or what am i doing wrong. Also the 2nd and 3rd times i have imported the files into WORD, and this is when they were the quality i mentioned, based on what they appear in word. But if i preview/view them on their own in a picture viewer, then they are not great quality at all - all 8 versions of wmf files.
    What am i doing wrong?
I am trying to create a letterhead, and this is for a volunteer role which i took up just recently and i have taken up too much time to produce the organisations documents which need branding. Business Card, Letter head, fax cover and dcoument template for internal use, cover page etc.
So if anyone could shed some light on all this or point me in the right direction thorugh a hidden web tutorial then that would be great, i would love to hear from anyone, real quick.
Or just at least tell me why illustrator is not exporting properly anymore? Another question, does all text in my illustrator document need to be (Create Outlines) before i export to wmf format - as im just learning all this stuff now.
    Thankyou,
    GaNa85

    Hey Mylenium,
Thats cleared up a lot, and i was going to say that i did do a search just after i posted that saving as microsfot office - it saves as a png, but wanted to hear everyones reesponses also.
I will work with png, but i would like to ask (i will need to print off and check), but is this the professional standard to utilizing and branding documents such as letter heads/fax cover letters, working with word etc.
I want a very clean cut, nice, finished, crisp and polished logo branding on all my word documents. Not allowed to have anything blurry in anyway, it will be for the organisations corporate branding - throughout all office documents.
Why would i not use tiff? due to large file size? Does Word not accept it?
If you could or anyone explain all this then i would learn something for the long run. If there is a proper format for this, then i would like to hear.
For everyone else the header greys out the image, though from reading other peoples responses for word, it will appear as is once printed, with it's original colour and quality - purpose of header IS to distinguish that this part of the document is a header, by greying out the image.
If i could get a last clarification for creating letterheads and png/other file formats, then that would be great.
    Thanks!

  • Wmf files in bridge cc

In previous versions of Bridge I had preview of wmf files, now I just get an icon. Is there a way to preview these files?

Windows Metafile (WMF) is an image file format originally designed for Microsoft Windows in the 1990s. Windows Metafiles are intended to be portable between applications and may contain both vector graphics and bitmap components. It acts in a similar manner to SVG files.
I have been able to view these files in Bridge CS5 so wondered why I could not in Bridge CC...I can open them in Illustrator.

  • .wmf files

    Hello everyone,
I'm allowing users to store .wmf (windows meta file) files in the database. However I can't display the files back to the user because internet explorer does not support this file type. If anyone knows of a package/class/library to convert wmf files to .jpg of .gif or even to simply display them in a browser please help me.
    Thanks,
    Grey

I have the same problem, converting a wmf-file to gif. Would you please tell me what your solution is? Maybe I can use it here.
    Thanks, Harry
never mind, once again I found the solution before
getting a single reply. what a great forum!

  • How to conversion .wmf files for Mac use?

We have Broderbund's ClickArt package from the days when the user used Windows.  Now, on the Mac, the .wmf files won't open in Preview, Pages, etc.  (We don't have MS Office.)  How can we either use these .wmf files with Mac or find a good conversion program?
    Thanks in advance

    Wow!  How brilliant!
I never would have thought of searching the Internet for an answer  before asking people what worked for them.
    Your answer is useless.
I can and did google my question before posting.
I am looking for people with experience which isn't included in the results of a google search.
I see you post non-answers all the time.  It would be nice if your answers were helpful.  In other forums, you are a Troll.
Please don't try to "help" me if I post questions again.

  • Slideshow unable to create WMF File

I can not create a WMF File from the Slideshow. Is there any solution for that ?

    Marc,
your question is too vague for anyone to help you.
1- What version of Photoshop Elements do you have? Are you running on XP or Vista?
I am guessing that you have made your slide show and then done the Output command to write a WMV file
2- what where the other output parameters that you choose with your choice of a WMV file?
3- what error message or symptoms do you get?
4- how many slides are in your slide show?
5- how much space do you have available on your C drive?

  • Best way to view and edit wmf files

How can I view and edit wmv files on my iMac?

wmf files is a MS Windows video file, you will need a tool to covert the wmf files to another file format OS X will read. Simply Google to find a converter you are interested in and use it.

  • What advante&disadvante of using graphics or object as bitmap file or wmf file ?

Working on lookuot graphics,I was recommanded to use bitmap file rather than metafiles file, but when I use bitmap file, my graphics were not looking good as original and slowed down my job.Does it take alot of memories and slowdown my computer speed if I use metafiles ?

If your graphics use a lot of complex surface textures or were generated in a pixel driven graphics program wmf files get really bloated. As long as you draw graphics with a vector driven graphic program (like Corel Draw) and create simple objects, wmf. is really the better choice. It allows you to scale your graphics without loss of resolution and without increasing memory usage, thus speeding up your design process within Lookout. I actually use wmf in about 90% of my custom graphics. There is really a quiet good section on bmp vs wmf in the handbook.

  • Can no longer read plist files

I've got a script that iterates through a list of hostnames, connects to each host, looks for the existence of a list of applications, and if they exist reads their Info.plist for the version.  This worked seamlessly until a couple of days ago.  The only change I can think of is having changed my username on all of my Macs from <username> to <username>.sa to differentiate privileged accounts from unprivileged accounts.  Yes, this caused a number of issues, and I've hunted them down.  I can connect to every host with <username>.sa, perform actions with sudo, etc.  What I can't do any more is read plist files, even when logged in locally:

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Is there a plug-in to open WMF files in Photoshop CS2?

Have been opening my WMF files in another program and converting them to a friendlier format which is a pain.  Is there a plug-in or something that will allow me to open WMF in Photoship CS2?  I can view them in Bridge but that's all.

Here is a Batch Converter, that might work for you. Do not know about a plug-in.

  • Error: Unable to read footer file

Hoping someone out there can help me. I get this error on
everypage in my site and have no idea how to stop it.
Error: Unable to read footer file
The error does not show up when I preview inside dreamweaver
but only rears its ugly head after I post the site up on the
internet. I have searched for hours through the Dreamweaver menus
and can not find these elusive footers and have no idea where they
are coming from or what footer file it is trying to read.. Please
help. This probably has a simple solution and I am just not able to

Possibly, but without a URL we can't comment. Post it, and
    we'll see.
At a guess, sounds like an include file is missing. Are you
    on some sort of
free hosting plan where the host puts some adverts in the
    footer? If that
file is removed from your site directory you might get the
    error you've
mentioned (at least, that was the case on the only other time
    I've seen this
    error)

  • Error reading excel file using POI.

    Hi ,
I am having some problem when reading the excel file.
While reading excel file I am getting error-java.io.IOException: Unable to read entire block; 4 bytes read; expected 512 bytes.
    part of my code:-
    InputStream stream = objFormFile.getInputStream();
POIFSFileSystem fs = new POIFSFileSystem(stream);//getting above error here.
    HSSFWorkbook wb = new HSSFWorkbook(fs);
    Case 1:
I download the file on the system ,save it ,and then directly upload it to the system ,I get the above error .
    Case 2:
It works fine if I download the excel and manually open and save it and then upload it .
    I am using JDK1.4.1 and poi-2.5.1-final-20040804.jar.
Can any one please help me out for the above problem?
Edited by: hruday on Jul 31, 2008 3:20 AM

Instead of using POIFSFileSystem, try to directly create the HSSFWorkbook
    InputStream stream = objFormFile.getInputStream();
//POIFSFileSystem fs = new POIFSFileSystem( stream );//getting above error here.
    HSSFWorkbook wb = new HSSFWorkbook( stream );

  • Error reading Remote file when the connection is slow

I have a program that reads a file from a remote server. The file is an xml file.
    This uses URL inputstream.
This works just fine but when the xml that it reads grow in size, the content of the file is not completely sent to the variable string.
I have come to a conclusion that slow connection to the server could somehow cause this. The error is intermittent. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
I hope you guys could help me tune this code or if you have suggestions like other ways to read a remote file. Which will work even if the file grows bigger.
