Ready To Switch to Tiger

Well, I have waited 2 years to do it but I think I am ready to buy and install Tiger. I am presently running Panther on a PB G4. I would like to have a tutorial on installing over Panther and some helpful hints on backing up my music from iTunes. Does Tigert format the HD before it installs? I am open to any and all suggestions. Thanks.

> Does Tigert format the HD before it installs?
Are you aware that Leopard is expected to be released sometime this spring?
http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/index.html
The Tiger retail install package includes the following install methods:
Upgrade
Archive & Install - with an option to preserve user and network settings.
Erase & Install
Tiger does not format the HD before it installs since formatting a HD completely erases the HD.
If you choose the Upgrade or Archive & Install method selecting preserve user and network settings, all user and network settings, user data and 3rd party applications are transferred to the new system.
Using the Erase & Install method does as indicated - it completely erases the HD first and then installs Tiger and the applications included on the Tiger install package only. What is included with the Tiger retail install package is included here.
http://www.apple.com/macosx/techspecs/
This link provides a brief overview of the install options.
http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/
Regardless the install method chosen, you are smart to backup all important data beforehand.
Assuming you are using the current iTunes version, you have a couple of backup options. At the iTunes menu bar, go to File and select Back Up to Disc. This process backs up to CD or DVD media - if you have a SuperDrive required to burn to DVD media. There are 3 options to choose from and you should choose the first.
Or you can backup your iTunes folder at Home > Music > iTunes.
After creating your backup of desired data, disconnect all external peripheral devices except for a keyboard and mouse - if such is used with your PB. Insert the Tiger install disc and select Restart from the Apple menu. At the startup chime, press and hold the "C" key until your PB boots from the install disc. Select your language and at the Installer prompt/selection, navigate to Disk Utility via the Installer menu bar.
Select Macintosh HD in the list of drive and volumes and under the First Aid tab, select Repair Disk. If any problems are reported and successfully repaired, run repair again until no problems are reported. Afterwards, select Repair Disk Permissions from the same location.
When finished, quit Disk Utility and the focus will return to the Installer.
I've always preferred the Archive & Install method selecting preserve user and network settings. The Tiger OS and all included applications are installed new and all user and network settings, user data and all 3rd party applications are transferred to the new system.
The old system is archived and saved as a previous system folder. This archived previous system folder cannot be used to boot or run the computer from. It contains user and network settings and data from the old system which can be used if something did not successfully make the transfer which has never been a problem for me using this install method to install Panther over Jaguar and Tiger over Panther on my old TiBook.
After confirming all user and network settings and user data was successfully transferred (you may want to wait a week or two), you can and should safely delete the archived previous system folder to free up hard drive space.

  • How to save/reinstall 9.2 iTunes, programs, when switching to Tiger?

    Hi, fellow Macphiles!
I've got some serious questions about switching to Tiger. I hope some of you can help me!
For starters, I've been extremely reluctant to switch to OS X - period. I've been pretty comfy with OS 9.2 for a long time. But, alas, looks like the time's come to switch to not only a new computer, but Tiger, as well. So, here goes!
    1. I have over 3 GB of iTunes on my computer. I'd like to save them and then transfer them to iTunes on the new computer I plan on getting (I'd be, of course, using the iTunes program that comes w/Tiger). How would I do that to make sure they work with Tiger's iTunes program? I don't have any huge Zip discs or anything major save 3 GB's of anything to.
    2. I have Adobe Photoshop on my current computer. How would I save it and the transfer that program to a new Mac? Just put it on disc and then install it on the new Mac?
    3. I've been using Outlook Express as my email client. How would I save my messages and other things in OE to transfer to Tiger? I really want to save these things but don't know exactly how I'd work that.
    4. I have other things, also - pix, documents, AppleWorks documents, MS Word .... would I only have to save those all to a disc and then reinstall on the new computer?
    5. What about saving my many Netscape bookmarks and transferring them to a new 'puter and Tiger? Possible?
-- please help, if you can. I don't want to lose everything I've put on my computer over the last 5 years in a big computer/OS switch-over. If I can't exactly figure this out, I'm going to have to stay 9.2, and I'd rather not, especially since there aren't any good or useful downloads out there anymore for 9.2's. Besides, I can't use a muchly-coveted iPod with 9.2. iPods are calling my name (another reason I don't want to lose my iTunes in a switchover)! Thanks guys!
    iMac - G3   Mac OS 9.2.x

    Welcome to the Discussions, Princess!
Switching from OS 9 to OS X will involve manually moving your files from your old computer via CD-R, external hard drive, or target disk mode. If your iMac G3 cannot burn disks, then the CD-R option is out; if no Firewire port on your iMac G3, then target disk mode is also out. Therefore, your options are external hard drive or network sharing.
Assuming that you are going to get a new Mac with an Intel processor, you need to be aware of various Application types:
OS 9 (Classic): these will not operate on a new Intel Mac
OS X (PowerPC): these will operate, but are not optimized for an Intel Mac
OS X (Universal): these operate, and are optimized, for both Intel and PowerPC
Without knowing exactly which versions of the Applications that you have, it is difficult to guess which category they fall into. The good news is that there are OS X versions of AppleWorks and Photoshop, and obviously iTunes. If you move your iTunes music to your new Mac, then it will probably be recognizable or importable by iTunes. Your email may be more of an issue, but many programs will import old mail including Apple's own Mail program. A new Mac comes with many other programs such as iPhoto, which overlaps some of Photoshop's capabilities. If you know where your bookmark file is, it can be imported into Safari.
Take it slow, and by all means ask more questions as you go.
    Good Luck!

  • Gettting Ready to switch from PC to MAC-Can I use my back-up catalogue?

Hi!  I am getting ready to switch from PC to MAC.  My pics and back-up catalogue files are on an external hard drive.  I am wondering if I can just use an up-to-date back-up catalogue to place in lightroom on my new MAC and then be up to speed.  Will that work?
    Thanks so much, Leora

Yes, this should be fine! You may wish to give your catalog (the .lrcat) a new name (prefix) when you first copy it to your Mac. This will force build a new Previews folder on the new machine, sometimes a very good thing; sometimes wholly unnecessary.....

  • Switching from Tiger to Leopard

How do you switch from Tiger to Leopard? When I install Leopard disk, tells me wrong volume. What do I do?

Hi rsmith2009, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Is this an Install DVD you're talking about?
A Retail copy, or a Gray one from another model Mac?

  • Getting ready to switch from Windows

I was an old Apple user, from the Apple II to the Mac LC II, then I went to the dark side
I am now ready to come back, I want to get a Mac Pro, however everyone is telling me not to jump in right now because the product is quite old (March 2009) and that this is the longest the Mac pro ever went without update. Frankly this is scaring me a bit, is Apple planning to drop the line? How long before the next version is available?
My PC is about to die and I need to switch soon, but I don't want to buy something that expensive if a new model is just around the corner, and at the same time I can't wait another two months with this crappy PC.
My choices are to get the older Mac Pro now, wait a few weeks to see if the new one comes out, or get another PC...
    Message was edited by: BrokenBird

Buy when you need a system.
Quite old...? other than high end Gulftown. Not like you were talking about 2006-era desgin.
And the only other thing lacking, is stock OEM graphic and whatever Built To Order.
Use to be you had lots of choices to pick from in Specials bin but right now, slim pickings and shelf is bare!
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/mac_pro
Even the stock quad 2.66 / GT120 which is about what any of your X58 PCs offer (but without the over-clocking).
New... I could, and have, written extensively about why "new" isn't always better. Whether it was 2009 (and fix didn't come for 8 months), or 2008's early disaster (freeze on wake from sleep; new hardware + new OS + nothing was updated for all three, and graphics issues and performance is an on-going battle).
Bleeding edge... I agree that waiting is something helpful, pinch and save, plan, but not if yours is about to die!
Otherwise, I'd look at doing your own new build and still have backup PC for Windows 7; and you can run Windows 7 quite nicely on Mac Pros.

  • Switching from Tiger to Leopard or Snow Leopard

    Hi-
I have a desktop G5 iMAc running OS 4.10.11 and need to upgrade. What's the process and how much trouble am I going to get into doing this with my current software, mail programs, etc.?
    Thanks-
    DMitzelfeldt

First, a G5 won't run Snow Leopard, so that's out.
The main problem with Leopard will be finding a copy. If you call Apple (try to avoid their regular sales department which will tell you to buy a computer capable of running Snow Leopard) they may still have copies. Once a newer OS comes out they pull all older versions from their shelves and online store. Otherwise there's the used market but expect to pay around new prices anyway.
As for software, the main thing you'll lose is Classic and any OS9 generation software. I'd ask about specific software issues on the Leopard forum since they are the ones who have actually experienced a switch. I don't think there are any major ones unless you're already running ancient software.
By the way, one thing you can do for free is update to Tiger 10.4.11 since your profile says 10.4.10

  • Just switched from Tiger to Leopard, please advise on Parallels or VmWare

Hi all, I just made the switch to a new Macbook Pro (From a macbook) and thus also the switch to Leopard. I am having difficulty understanding the differences between Parallels and VmWare.
Primarily I frequently hear that Parallels does not play nice with Bootcamp under Leopard. I am hoping to explain my usage and get some assistance in deciding. I should also say that I HAVE parallels 2.5 and that was what I used with Tiger.
My main problem under that application was the inability to have windows access USB on the fly. I.e the only way parallels could use usb was by clicking it at Vitual machine start-up. Once done I could not toggle back to have OSX have USB access without shutting down the VM.
    My use:
I need to be able to easily swap files between my VM (which will be XP) and OSX. I never had a problem with this, but now I am reading that Parallels 3.0 and VmWare have specific "share" folders. I am not sure how this differers from my old drag and drop method that I used before. Can anyone explain?
Another concern of mine is how taxing it seems Parallels 2.5 is on the system itself. It seems to require great resources at the cost of battery life. I had read that VmWare required far less resources. At the time VmWare was being compared to Parallels 2.5. Have things changed in 3.0? Do VmWare less resources also result in lower system performance?
Third I would love hot swappable access to USB. Is this an option on either? If not which handles USB the best? My USB uses are: Printer, USB flash key, USB connection to digital camera for downloading.
I really appreciate your time in reading this and any help I receive. Also if anyone has any good comparison links it would be greatly appreciated. I have been unsuccessful in finding any do to my not entirely understanding the VM lingo, as well as running into comparisons between "non-current" versions of these softwares.
    Thank you again.
    Kalel

I run both Parallels 3 and VMWare 1.1.1 on a MacBook Pro 17" with 4g of memory running Mac OS X 10.5.1. There are some differences between the two. Parallels has the best integration with Mac OS X. Disk folders are easily shared meaning that you can mount your Mac folders directly in Windows. Windows sees them as remote disks and will move files back and forth. You can also directly open a document in a Mac folder in a Windows application. VMWare provides a similar capability but it is harder (more steps) to set up. You can cut and paste between the two environments. Select text in a Mac application and paste into Windows or the other way around. VMWare takes advantage of the dull CPUs in the PowerBook and allows Windows to use both. Parallels uses only a single CPU--at least I've never been able to find a way to use both. I ran Windows XP under Parallels and had no problems with it at all. Lately I've been running Vista Business addition under VMWare and it is working. I did see a review (don't remember the source) that stated Parallels was better for Windows XP and VMWare was better for Vista. From my experience I agree. So far I have had no problems with USB device on either VM.
Parallels 3 is much improved over Parallels version 2 and if you have not tried it you should give it a try.
My only real complaint is having to lock up 40 g of my hard drive to hold the file with the Windows disk in it. I would really like to see the VM vendors find a way to use the Mac file system without the need to emulate a Windows hard drive.

  • FireWire slows from 60MB/s to 16MB/s when switching from Tiger to Leopard

    Hi Folks
This is a big problem for FCP users so I'm posting this here (as well as on the Leopard discussion board). After upgrading to Leopard I noticed a substantial drop in FireWire disk performance. While in Tiger I could sustain 60MB/s against a FireWire800 RAID0 drive. After doing a clean install of Leopard the same drive wouldn't go past 16MB/s reading and about 30MB/s writing.
Note that I'm well aware of the usual suspects - Spotlight, Time Machine, some other process hitting the disk. This is NOT what's going on.
I can boot back and forth between Tiger and Leopard and see the above-mentioned speed change. I even went to the Apple Store and booted my machine off of their vanilla installs of both OSes and verified the problem.
Turns out the specific version of the MacBook Pro is important here. The latest refresh does NOT repro the problem. However, my version, MacBookPro2,2 the first refresh (which was the first to have a FW800 port) DOES repro the problem.
I've tried this with various Oxford-based FireWire drives and seen the same behavior. Anyone else have this version of the MacBook Pro willing to try this and post their results? You could use most any benchmark program to test throughput - Xbench is fine and free - but I've been using this one (free as well and one-button easy):
    http://www.aja.com/ajashare/AJAKONA_System_Testv2.app.tar
Thanks and let's hope Apple fixes this one quickly!

You might consider getting a firewire 800 card and see if that helps. Maybe they'd let you try one out at the apple store. Never a bad idea to have a second firewire bus anyway.
Or even better, get a SATA card and some external sata drives (I've got both a firewire800 and sata card for my macbookpro - but I've got the earlier model that only has firewire 400 internally). btw, I'm still on tiger.

  • Ready to switch

Why does Verizon continue to call another number besides mine on my account in regards to late payments. I have repeatedly told Verizon to call my cell number but to no avail.

Oh no! We really don't want you to switch due to the calls being made to the incorrect number. Are you saying you don't get any of the calls? They all go to a different number that is on the account? If this is the case, we can certainly have your number listed as the contact number.

  • Todd Kopriva - Request from FCP editor ready to switch

    Hi Todd:
As an editor for 30  years (CMX, Avid, Avid DS, FCP) I am always  looking for the best apps  to use in my work. After Effects and Photoshop  have always been at the  top of the list. After seeing the great work  done on PP ( and getting a  sense of where FCP is going), more than ever I  am considering   switching.
If you search the web, you will see I have been  unsatisfied with the  third party support for PP, especially when it  comes to transitions.  They have a definite place with certain kinds of  projects I work on.
I have tried to act as a catalyst in  encouraging developers currently  supporting FCP to support PP. This  includes Noise Industries (FX  Factory) and  Klaus Eiperle (a German  developer who make CGM plugins)
    http://www.cgm-online.com/eiperle/cgm_screenshots_v4_e.html).
Both vendors products would fill a void in PP capabilities. Klaus   expressed interest but said he had no contacts with Adobe. Please help   me strengthen PP's position in the market by enhancing this lacking  area.
I have done extensive research and testing of the  current plugins that  involve transitions (i.e.Sapphire, SpiceMaster,New  Blue) and found them  to be severely lacking in several areas. These  include shortcomings like  pedestrian effects, bad coding causing slow  rendering (to accomadate multiplatform use), limited options  for  control and variation of the transition or exorbitant pricing for a   very few effects.
Anything you could do will be appreciated.

    Hi lasvideo,
It's great to have you working to attract new third-party developers to the Creative Suite platform.  As Colin mentioned, the SDK forums are a fine place for developers to ask general questions on using the SDKs.  If needed, my email is also in the PPro SDK PDF documentation right at the end of the first chapter.
For developing effects plug-ins, the After Effects SDK is the recommended route.  For video transitions that can be applied between two clips, the Premiere Pro SDK has a transition API.
Regarding Noise Industries, we do have one specific feature request from them to support multiple PiPLs (and therefore multiple plug-ins) in a single binary.  This is not a dealbreaker for most developers, but perhaps this is more important for their needs, or perhaps their product roadmap is different than other developers.  As Todd mentioned, _many_ other effects, both internal and third-party, are developed using the After Effects API.  And version over version, we continue to improve upon the AE API support in Premiere Pro.
Has CGM worked with proDAD (another German company that developers Premiere Pro plug-ins) in the past?  Because some of the CGM effects look similar to proDAD Adorage.  One of their plug-in sets is even called "CGM Power".
    Cheers,
    Zac

  • I'm about ready to switch to Verizon!!

Send a private message to with your account and contact information and someone will get in touch with you.

Hi. First off, I've been a loyal AT&T wireless customer For 15-16 years now. I've been through many company name changes, U.S. cellular, Bell South, Cingular, AT&T, maybe more, but I have had it with being on the phone hours and hours trying to make this company understand my issues. I have bought who knows how many phones, have had who knows how many different plans, have never had my service disconnected, and have been late maybe a couple times throughout. I have four devices in service. Well three at the moment.
I downgraded my plan from 15gigs to 10gigs about 6 months ago,(I've gone up and down many times) when I did, my next bill was $100 more, which makes no sense, and of course I did not pay it. I've been on the phone with customer support for hours and hours, wasting life. Since that bill, I've been charged $5 a month late fee every month, which I will NEVER pay. I need help getting through the crap of being transferred from this person to that person and never accomplishing my goal. Can anyone tell me how to get to someone who can meet my demand of either taking all of that off of my account, or giving me a date to close my account, and switching to Verizon, who of course says that they will pay AT&T those charges if I'll switch. I need a contact other than the 1-800 customer service number or the 600 number
Thanks, and sorry to ramble on

  • After over a decade, I think I'm ready to switch from Verizon.

I lost unlimited when I upgraded, and data costs are ridiculous.
I upgraded in April of 2013.  I really wanted a 4G phone because my 3G Droid X wasn't enough for my internet wants.  I found out unlimited data was no longer being offered, and I could only buy a limited plan or pay $600+ for a Galaxy S3 which was about to be obsolete (S4 was out already).  Given no other options at the time, I went ahead and paid more money for less product (data) and got my new phone.   Well, the honeymoon was over pretty quickly.  I found 4gb was barely enough for what I was accustomed to using, and certainly not enough for what I wanted to use with my newfound 4G speed.
Couple 'paying more for less' with the fact that friends and co-workers were somehow able to keep their unlimited and upgrade phones at discounted rates, and I had a real bad taste in my mouth.  Well its August of 2014, and that taste is still there.  Paying $100/month has become really tiresome for 1 phone.  A cell phone just shouldn't cost that much in my opinion.  So now I'm doing serious research into other carriers, and even pre-paid plans.  A simple Google search has shown that Verizon doesn't really need to care about it's customer's concerns, thanks to their near-monopoly on coverage for the past decade.  Well that monopoly has changed quite a bit, and Verizon has not.
I want unlimited data.  I don't care if it gets throttled after a certain point.  I just want unlimited data back.  I don't want to pay more than $70/month total for my 1 line plan.  I don't need much voice or text.  There are no plans to accommodate my wants.  Other carriers do have plans to accommodate my wants, and have 4G coverage in my area.
I've been a loyal-paying customer for a very long time, but I feel like that has no value to Verizon.  So in a way, this is a final cry for help from Verizon.  Will they do anything to retain a good customer?  Do I have any options, other than to switch carriers?

    twizted_3kgt wrote:

Probably not. Good luck with the new carrier.

  • Since latest upgrade I cannot "print" or show "print preview" from any web page. This is true of both of my printers and I have followed directions on plug-ins and have reinstalled Firefox etc. I am about ready to switch to Internet Explorer! w

Since upgrading Firefox, it doesn't respond when I click on print and/or print preview while displaying web pages.. No error message, just no response. I tried using both my printers..a HP and a Canon and get no results with either. I have no problem printing from any other place (including "Print" instructions within web pages, usually). I have recently upgraded my desktop (Dell Vostro 220) to Windows 7 and it went smoothly. The Firefox upgrade came at about the same time, so I don't know if Windows 7 is part of the problem. I need be able to print from the screen of web pages!

    Hi jjoyceeric,
Have you looked at the Knowledge Base article [[Firefox prints incorrectly]]? There is some good troubleshooting information in there. I would suggest that you try resetting your print settings.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • I hate SOOO many things about firefox 4 that I'm ready to switch to another browser. The new version is ridiculous!! Y'all are looking more like Microsoft with this one!

    (1) I can't give feedback because you keep telling me i don't have the latest version. I DOWNLOAD/REINSTALL and you contniue to tell me the same thing!!!
    (2) I can't stand not being able to go back by clicking the arrow. I keep having to right click and select where I want to go!
    (3) I exited through the menu to save my active pages and when I reloaded, it started over!!!
    (4) I continually have to turn off the bookmark toolbar and turn it back on to get my buttons back!
    (5) Whenever I select "open in new window" a blank window opens and nothing loads!
The advantages that I had when using firefox are gone! I will be trying other browsers. I think it's time to try chrome or safari.
It's really too bad you lost what you had. I was a HUGE supporter of firefox, but version 4 is terrible!!!!

Regarding #1, your post says you have a beta version of Firefox 4. That may well be incorrect, but that is why the site says you do not have the latest version.
Losing graphics on the bookmarks toolbar and not having a working back button are not normal, but I'm not sure whether you want to troubleshoot Firefox 4, roll back to Firefox 3.6, or just move on.
    How can we help?

  • Packaging .AI file to PDF ready for printer - MAC Tiger user

Hallo, I need some help please about sending artwork to printer who is using a FUJI colour Laser printer. (like most printers who are using laser here they reply to me to simply send them PDF, when I ask about embedded profiles or not to embed they tend to look at me blankly and say just send them a proof for me to compare colours)?!?!?!?
So, Please could someone confirm wether or not I have applied the best setting in my PDF conversions: I am running CS3 creative suite and acrobat version 8.0. thanks.
When you get the PDF options window on the " save Adobe pdf", On the first GENERAL page I set this to PDF/x-1a, (but why is there also the standard tab where I can do the same thing? so I set this also to PDF/x-1a. The compatibility goes to acrobat 4.0.
I now go to OUTPUT. here I set the following:
Colour conversion -- convert to destination preserve numbers
Destination (since this is laser I set it to -- Generic cmyk profile
Profile inclusion policy is grayed out.
In PDF/X box under output intent profile name is set to Generic cmyk, and that is all.
Before i did all this my global colour settings management policy is set to FOGRA27 (iso 12647-2:2004) and adobe RGB 1998 for the photos from photoshop cs3 of course. I then convert the document to the generic cmyk profile before packaging it into PDF and assigning these settings.
I have searched everywhere for detailed tutorials about precisely how to pakage your work for an outside printer, but the web is silent when it comes to laser printing. I would love to know if there are any resources which cover all the issues of preparing your artwork for print since this side of the job is a minefield of complicated presets and flattening and font changing techniques.
I am a memeber of Lynda.com and while they are excellent teachings and professional, I have unfortunately not been able to learn the gritty detailsof printing from them, only the basics.
I appreciate the person who takes the time to reply to this.
    I thank you.
    Kind regards
    Chris Watts

Your settings should do the job adequately, but there is a much simpler and more reliable method. Get Acrobat Professional. Generate your artwork in AI and save it as an .eps file. Then use Acrobat Distiller to generate the .pdf file. The advantages are that AD produces MUCH smaller file sizes, much better .pdf files and has a number of presets from which to choose, depending on the intended purpose of the file.
Another hint as far as quality control is concerned - you should be working in the CMYK color space in Photoshop, if you are going to produce CMYK images in the .pdf file. CMYK is a narrower color space than RGB, so there is often a color shift upon conversion. You may have the image exactly the way you want it, as an RGB, but be disappointed in the printed version because of the shift in color during conversion. If you work in CMYK, you can adjust it to get the results you want.
