My aunt (for sure).is with a company called "BE" who supplies her broadband for many years (she is 70+) and she has BT telephone contract for many years in her deceased husbands name (10yrs min) She is looking for advice, told me she spoke to many people over a period of time and they were not english speaking, ( that part I am aware of, foreign call centres)
She requires my help, asked me to get BT broadband for her, why, 'Cos she trusts me..
I am so afraid to move on this, in case I get in a position it all goes wrong, due to many negative feed backs I hear.
I am not really prepared to call "BT" and get knocked from piller to post by: press this number 1,2,3,4 etc and then go through all the rigamole to get a BASIC answer/outcome.
Is it really true that BT, Sky, Talk Talk, BE (who are they?) and others are more interested in thier profits than those, through no fault of thier own and being mostly in their vulnerable/advancing state/years are perperpually unaware they are paying, Cos they are not "savvy" whereas the forementioned companies have no intention of informing those who are vulnerable.
Side Note: Her husband has been dead for min10yrs and contract has and is in his name, she still pays the bills on this telephone contract

Not sure what your actual questions are here! She should expect the same speed with BT as she's getting now And after she gets the MAC code it'll take a couple of weeks to change over.
Most deals are 18 month contracts. BT has low, medium and high user packages so you may want to ask BE how much Internet she uses each month. If she signs up to a low user package and it turns out she is a high user, she will incur extra charges.
On the account name, they will be able to update it into her name if you want that to be done,

I am about to start on a university project for which I have to implement a Java software solution. I am new to programming so I would appreciate any help/advice.
I am intending to create a java site (not JSP) for a company which will allow the company's contractors to post jobs in their particular section of th esite (after they have logged in) they can post, edit, update and print jobs. The company must be able to receive these jobs by logging in and then be able to update the progress of the jobs, i.e. recieved, customer contacted, done etc. There will be approximately 4 external companies providing jobs to start with.
My questions are:
Can I make a Java program to do this and put it on a webpage?
Is it best to use MS Access?
Any tips or pointer?
This is just astart, I am about to start the design process. I am sure you will see my name more often as the project progresses:D

While you could use java to create this project WITHOUT using servlet/JSP technology, it would make it far more difficult. As Brenner said, you could use applets instead, but why deal with the GUI yourself when you can let HTML handle it?
I'm not sure why you would not want to use servlet/JSP technology... perhaps you have concerns about the web server being able to use it? That's a possible issue, but if the web server is relatively recent, it ought to support Java. If you can use your own software, use Tomcat... it's Java-enabled, and free.
As for Access... if you have it, it wouldn't hurt to use it. I'm sure there are JDBC drivers available for MS Access somewhere. If, however, you don't HAVE TO use it, I'd download something like mySQL. It's free, and it has free JDBC drivers available. I've used it for school projects, and it's relatively easy to use. No GUI like Access, but I personally consider that a plus ;-)
I'm a web developer for the military, and I use Java exclusively for my applications. In fact, what I do is done in a way very similar to what you're proposing right now. I make extensive use of servlets, JSPs, JDBC for database access (using DB2, which is a pain), JavaBeans, DataSources, and just about any Web-oriented Java technology you can think of. Need Real Help & Advice With Replacement MBP Options!

Please kindly give me some advice as I need to act quickly - I already have a MBP 15" 2.4 Unibody replacement agreed by Apple only last week (replacing a Intel 2.2 GB MBP) but I am pretty sure that the Senior Customer Services Person I spoke to was not aware of any due upgrade as he was very helpful and probably genuinely did not know. In view of the new models announced, should I stick with this or ask for the new 2.53 version which is actually cheaper and therefore I am somewhat hopeful they should do (or would they now generally offer me the new one?) Can any of you kind folks also please tell me:
1. What are the advantages/disadvantages between the old 2.4 Unibody MBP & the new 2.53 Unibody MBP?
2. I know the new one comes with an SD card slot and loses the Express Card Slot but is the loss of the latter a big thing? Can the old one with the use of card readers actually shift data from the MBP to a SD card (or any other) via card reader/device? Is Express Card or SD Card Slot more desirable and better utilised?
3. I think the newer one has less better 9400M integrated graphics - is that true and how big a deal is that? (I plan on downloading and watching lots of HD content) Is it better to go for the dual 9400M/9600GT graphics
4. I know the new one can be upgraded to 8GB of Ram which sound really good for future-proofing and general super-smooth running purposes so I guess this feature is really important? I guess it can take 4 x 2GB sticks?
5. Some have stated that they are very happy that the new ones have Firewire back but was that also not on the old 2.4 one?
6. How big/good/bad a thing is it to have a non replaceable battery even though in theory, it may last longer?
7. The new version makes a big deal about the screen - is it a good reason to upgrade or as good as they make out?
8. Are the Hard Drives on these latest versions user-replaceable/upgradable? (250GB is still a little low for my future needs and I was planning to upgrade to a higher capacity).
9. As I am not a savvy as most when it comes to this sort of stuff, is there anything else that I have not considered/should consider or have taken into account and which may prove to be be of significance in the future?
10. Is it safe to assume that the newer model may be better as it may have had bugs or issues the old one may have had ironed out?
11. Because of the better graphics and larger Hard Drive (320GB), I am also inclined to go for the 2.66 model - how should I best proceed if I choose this model - will they likely give me one (or better still, how can I best wangle one!) or is it possible to offer to pay some money to make up for the difference and what would be considered a fair and reasonable amount?
I am very sorry to ask so many questions but I need to act fairly quickly on this one and would be extremely grateful for the help and input!

I am a big fan of the unibody MacBook Pros. I had purchased mine in October 2008. I could easily purchase a new one with out a second thought. They are exceptional machines.

The batteries can be replaced at an Apple Store at any time. The hard drive can be upgraded by the user. The graphics are still very good.
Anything else I might have missed? I would like to choose the one that offers the most future-proofing and will operate the best when running Snow Leopard and Windows, HD Material and will cause least performance issues!

You cannot go wrong with a unibody MacBook Pro. Leopard runs on Macs that are 10-years old. Whatever your choice, you will be "future proofed".

Please please help Advice required- BT home phone ...

Well hi everyone
Newbie here, and am writing in the hope that someone may be able to help us. I'm now desperate and I came across this website purely by chance and I have to say I am so very glad, because this maybe my last place to turn to help. In the text below I have tried to condense everything to explain what has happened over the past 2.5weeks.
For 2 1/2 weeks now we have been having problem with our telephone line and broadband, bt so far have been very helpful, however we are being pushed pillar to post with no-one actually resolving the issue.
The issue? Very intermittent broadband, and if we do have it then we are lucky if we get 235kbps, phone line very crackly and if the broadband is not working, all I need to do is phone myself up and the broadband kicks in. !!
We have spoken to several people, and week 1 they recognised there was a line fault on the line and an engineer was called out, he explained that he had swapped our wires over at the pole. (not quite sure what he meant by that). After that, the broadband starting to die and sometimes it would not work for 3 days at a time. BT arranged for a broadband engineer to turn up (engineer no:2). When he arrived the broadband was working, he tested the line, did everything else and said he could find nothing wrong, but that everything should be fine now. 1 hour after him leaving the Internet stopped working. Rang BT out came engineer no: 3. this was when I explained to him that the broadband only seemed to work for an hour if we received a phone call. He admitted he had never heard of that before but since everything seemed to be working now (and yes the broadband started working 2 hours before the engineer turned up, with a connection speed of 1300kbps) he would change the filter over and hope that this resolved the problem. (we have a fixed faceplate filter).
No this did not solve the problem, BT advised us that it might be the hub, and today we finally received a brand new BT homehub. (after being promised 1 homehub to be delivered last Weds, took a days leave - it never arrived, eventually it was established that the renewals team had forgotten to order us one :-)
It is not the BT homehub. - the phoneline is still awful and my hubby has just phoned me to say the internet connection has just died, except for when I phone him and then we will have connection for about 10mins to an hour.
I have to say BT have been nothing but very helpful, however this is now getting to the point of no return, and the hubby is starting to lose patience
I do hope someone here can help us, or at least advise us on what can be done next.

Good morning again all
I am now tearing my hair out, this problem has been going on for 3 weeks now with no end in sight. The Line engineer rang us on Sunday, I explained to him the problem, and he wanted to check to see if it was a line fault. We went through several procedures of unplugging the sky equipment, unplugging the broadband etc, and he then tested the line and confirmed that none of our equipment was faulty and that it definitely was a broadband problem. He also confirmed that he could also hear the "fax machine" noise in the background. He asked about whether the filter had been changed and I confirmed that we have a fixed filter, and the last time the engineer was here he changed the filter.
He put me though back to the Broadband department, and I then discovered we had to start to explain the issues we were having all over again. Every person I have spoken to has asked, have we changed the filter (YES) do we have another hub to plug in (YES), have you tried a different phone (YES), ....This is getting absolutely ludicrous.
Yesterday at 11am I had a phonecall at work to tell me the line appeared to be fixed as we had had connection for the last 11 hours. My husband rang me to say at 11:30 the broadband had gone off and was again flashing amber, and the phone line was still crackly with the fax machine noise still in the background.
I again rang BT helpdesk and explained the problem was not fixed, they then confirmed that the engineers were working on the problem as they could see there was a drop in connection.
At 7pm last night we had a phonecall to ask whether the broadband was working, I explained no it wasn't. They asked whether we had changed the filter etc, at this point I politely refused to speak to them, and asked that they look at the case notes before asking any further questions. They said they would get back to me.
At 8PM last night we had another phonecall to ask whether it was working, I again explained that one of their colleagues had rang an hour ago to ask the same question, they then asked had we done all the normal checks, and I again explained that they look at the case notes before discussing anything further. He put me on hold, and read back to me the issues, I was grateful at this point that I had not had to explain myself for the 16th time. He explained he would arrange a call back tomorrow morning as he can see that engineers are supposed to be working on the line that night. (I have heard this several times before)
As you can understand I am getting highly frustrated as all I seem to be doing is going around in circles with nothing getting resolved.
Any help would again be appreciated.

I deleted the myclasses and system folders and restarted this and still get this error.

You are throwing the message and then catching it yourself, and then printing the stack, which is what java is doing.
So, you need to
remove
}catch(Exception e)
e.printStackTrace();
and you would need to place the try block appropriately, since some methods you have used want exceptions caught.

Part I
An algorithm describes how a problem is solved in terms of the actions to be executed, and it specifies the order in which the actions should be executed. An algorithm must be detailed enough so that you can "walk" through the algorithm with test data. This means the algorithm must include all the necessary calculations.
Here is an algorithm that calculates the cost of a rectangular window. The
total cost of a window is based on two prices; the cost of the glass plus the cost of the metal frame around the glass. The glass is 50 cents per
square inch (area) and the metal frame is 75 cents per inch (perimeter).
The length and width of the window will be entered by the user. The
output of the program should be the length and width (entered by the user)
and the total cost of the window.
FORMULAS:
area = length times width perimeter = 2 times (length plus width)
Here is the corresponding algorithm:
read in the length of the window in inches
read in the width of the window in inches
compute the area
compute the cost of the glass (area times 50 cents)
compute the perimeter
compute the cost of the frame (perimeter times 75 cents)
compute the total cost of the window (cost of glass plus cost of frame)
display the length, width and total cost
The next step would be to "desk check" the algorithm. First you would need to make up the "test data". For this algorithm, the test data would involve making up a length and a width, and then calculating the cost of the window based on those values. The results are computing by hand or using a calculator. The results of your test data are always calculated before translating your algorithm into a programming language. Here is an example of the test data for the problem given:
length = 10
width = 20
area = 200, glass cost= 100.00 (area times 50 cents)
perimeter = 60, frame cost = 45.00 (perimeter times 75 cents)
total cost =145.00
Once the test data is chosen, you should "walk" through the algorithm using the test data to see if the algorithm produces the same answers that you obtained from your calculations.
If the results are the same, then you would begin translating your algorithm into a programming language. If the results are not the same, then you would attempt to find out what part of the algorithm is incorrect and correct it. It is also
necessary to re-check your hand calculations.
Each time you revise your algorithm, you should walk through it with your test data again. You keep revising your algorithm until it produces the same answers as your test data.

The next step would be to "desk check" the algorithm. First you would need to make up the "test data". For this algorithm, the test data would involve making up a length and a width, and then calculating the cost of the window based on those values. The results are computing by hand or using a calculator. The results of your test data are always calculated before translating your algorithm into a programming language. Here is an example of the test data for the problem given:
length = 10
width = 20
area = 200, glass cost= 100.00 (area times 50 cents)
perimeter = 60, frame cost = 45.00 (perimeter times 75 cents)
total cost =145.00
Once the test data is chosen, you should "walk" through the algorithm using the test data to see if the algorithm produces the same answers that you obtained from your calculations.
If the results are the same, then you would begin translating your algorithm into a programming language. If the results are not the same, then you would attempt to find out what part of the algorithm is incorrect and correct it. It is also
necessary to re-check your hand calculations.
Each time you revise your algorithm, you should walk through it with your test data again. You keep revising your algorithm until it produces the same answers as your test data.
Now write and submit a Java program that will calculate the cost of a rectangular window according to the algorithm explained. Be sure to prompt for input and label your output.

Write, compile and execute a Java program that displays the following prompts:
Enter an integer.
Enter a second integer
Enter a third integer.
Enter a fourth integer.
After each prompt is displayed, your program should use the nextint method of the Scanner class to accept a number from the keyboard for the displayed
prompt. After the fourth integer has been entered, your program should calculate and display the average of the four integers and the value of the first integer entered raised to the power of the second integer entered. The average and result of raising to a power should be included in an appropriate messages
(labels).
Sample Test Data:
Set 1: 100 100 100 100
Set 2: 100 0 100 0
Be sure to write an algorithm first before attempting to write the Java code. Walk through your algorithm with test data to be sure it works as anticipated.So this is where you actually have to do something. My guess is that you've done nothing so far.

Repeat Part lI but only calculate the average, not the power. This time, make sure to use the same variable name, number, for each of the four numbers input. Also use the variable sum for the sum of the numbers. (Hint: To do this, you may use the statement sum = sum + number after each number is read.)Man, this specification writes itself. Sit down and start coding.

Select expert - 'A string is required here'

Hi All,
in select expert I put code like below:
1)
'{sp.ContractNo} like {?ContractNo}'
          where ?contractNo is a parameter declared as a 'string'
It worked fine with Crystal Enterprise 10 SP3
After coping all reports and stored procedures to another server and installing SP6 for Crystal Enterprise 10 it stopped working.No idea why.
So I tried to replace select formula like this:

if cstr({?ContractNo})="" or cstr({?ContractNo})="*" or IsNull({?ContractNo}) then True
first I used it without cstr function but after running there was always 'A string is required here' error message. Adding cstr didn't helped. Still the same.
Original select was based on 'like' keyword to make it possible to enter starting character or just a part of string.
As because users in most cases want to select data for all Contracts, select 2) was acceptable or at least I wanted to see anything. No way,
still the same error 'A string is required here' during the runtime.
Any idea what's going on ?
I'd appreciate any suggestions and comments.

For your first formula, why not try with wildcards and see if it works, since you mentioned that the intent was for the user to enter a part of a string?
Try one of these:
{sp.ContractNo} like {?ContractNo} & '*'     // for any number of characters
{sp.ContractNo} like {?ContractNo} & '?'    // for a single character
For the second (re-write) formula, make sure that the NULL condition is always checked first.
if IsNull({?ContractNo}) or cstr({?ContractNo})="" or cstr({?ContractNo})="*" then True

For this particular issue, it does look like a design problem. From the screen shots, I'm guessing that the light gray box is using negative top margin to overlap the darker dray box. I think for this change the dark gray box to use height:auto and add a padding-bottom to it for the current space below the text. That way when the text starts to push down there will be a constant amout of space from the bottom of the text to the bottom of the dark gray box and that will push the light gray box down as well.

Looking for some help/advice on LabVIEW

Hello, I'm completely new to LabVIEW but have a project to do and was wondering if anyone could give me some help/advice/ideas.
I need to use LabVIEW to interface with a power meter (Agilent E4419B) via a GPIB cable. I have a GP10 card. I have the drivers from the NI website. Can anyone think of any other software/hardware I may require? Or any advice about the best way to go about this from experience?

Basically I am wondering how you actually go about setting up LabVIEW to communicate with the meter - is all I need a GPIB card and cable? How do the drivers actually work? Do I need to use any different commands to interact with the meter or do the drivers serve this purpose?

Help im drowning here in a sea of confusion

Ok im in a pickle and need some help, i took out an .mac account for my first web site, which is doing great, now I want to build one for the whole region so all the jiu jitsu clubs can keep in touch. So I went to my I web built anew web site then opened a new account. This is where the problem started.
I know cant get my mac web account to upload my site, It just keeps loading the other site i have and then the new one . I even tried idisk and all that did was sync and give me a load of alias disks.
I took the advice off here but now on the bottom of my iweb were it said my old address with alil green light it has the new one but it just wont load and how do i even get back my old web page thingy on the bottom right now im about at my wits end.

To avoid all this confusion you should think about taking Tom's advice and open a new user account for the second website and .Mac account.
Split your domain file, move the appropriate one over to the second user and drop it into Home Folder/Library/Application Support/iWeb.
Make sure you give this user account read and write permissions.
You can do this, and sort out any "foreign" language issues, by highlighting iWeb in Applications and clicking "get info".
Login to the second .Mac account from this user account.
Now each site can be launched in its own user account and published to the appropriate .Mac account with relatively little strain on your brain!
You'll make life a little easier by enabling "fast user switching" in Apple/System Preferences/Accounts/Login Options.

Re Download useage HELP / ADVICE needed

I am probably being a bit thick here with this question so please be gentle with me !
I am new to BT internet and have a limit of !0 gig on my download per month . Now if I watch live tv eg sky tv on my laptop
but am not storing a program for later viewing does this constitute part of my 10gig limit and if so how can I tell how far of my limit I am . I have looked under phone and broadband useage but it does not show, only stateing that there is no excess charge so far .

Your if statement is a bit off. Try doing it this way instead:
If NumericText ({data.TextColumn}) Then
ToNumber ({outbound_bol_detail.weight})
Else 0;
Also, have a look in File | Report Options and turn on Convert NULL Values to Default. It's possible you may have NULLs in the data that Crystal is having problems with.
