Real slow mo using HDV-SD50P codec?

Hi,
I need to incorporate material shot in HDV-SD50 into a DVCPro HD 1080i50 project for a smooth slow motion sequence. What I am wondering is, whether I can do this in Compressor, and what my best solution is for minimising quality loss when including SD material in a HD project?
How do I take this into my existing FCP sequence which is on the DVCPro HD 1080i50 setting?
The finished project will have to be blown up even further to 1920x1080, so I need to consider this as well.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks

I wouldn't change applications against a deadline.
Slow motion is not an easy effect to do in post unless you shot more frames per second than you needed for standard speed. Making 30 frames a second into 60 frames requires each frame to be printed twice. What were your expectations or what have your tried before?
Especially with HDV, which starts out so heavily compressed, by the time it gets slomo'd and transcoded back to MPEG2 again, yeah, I imagine it's gonna look pretty bad. You can obtain some expensive software to do the optical flow pixel interpretation without buying FCS2 but that's up to your client's needs for smooth slow motion. Rendering optical flow, we've heard, takes for freakin' ever, even on the best machines.
Some HDV users will chime in over the next few hours or days with more helpful advice.

  • Mac get real slow after using web browser for awhile

Using internet does not matter what which web browser I use after just minutes especially playing  the browser runs extremy slow. I have 15" and 17" 4 gig memory on both macs and they both do the same thing, do not think it is the internet I get about 10 mg rate

Sorry, didn't want to post verbose instructions if they weren't needed. Let's go one by one:
Is he getting all the right IP information - IP/mask/gateway/DNS?
Go to a command prompt (Start/run, type CMD then Enter). Then type IPCONFIG then Enter. This will give you everything except DNS. Run IPCONFIG /ALL. Note the DNS server(s). Compare this output with your Mac (System Preferences/Network).
If so, from Terminal, ping the gateway, then DNS, then yahoo.com. Where/when does it fail? If it fails at yahoo.com, does it resolve the name to the IP address?
Whoops, my bad, Terminal is Mac. From the command prompt you're hopefully still in (if not, run CMD again), ping the default gateway listed in the IPCONFIG output from above (type PING followed by gateway address; looks like #.#.#.#) Successful? If so, ping DNS server from IPCONFIG /ALL output. Successful? If so, ping yahoo.com. First, does it resolve yahoo.com to an actual address (i.e. 68.180.206.184)? Do you get replies, or does it timeout?

  • Integrating hdv-sd50p material into a hdv1080i50 project

    Hi,
I am cutting a commercial shot in hdv25p on the jvc gy-hd101e camera. I am cutting the project in dvcpro hd 1080i50 (1440x1080) with a mind for eventually blowing it up to 1920x1080 to meet local cinematic standards.
We have shot a small portion of the material in the hdv-sd50p codec so that we can have a 'real slow motion' sequence in our ad. I need to integrate the hdv-sd50p material into the same sequence with the rest of the material. Should I use compressor for this, motion, or can I do it somehow within final cut pro?
I know this is very specific, but I hope someone can provide some insights...
    Thanks very much!
    4 x 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   8 GB DDR2 SDRam

you should be able to just put it in the same sequence with out a problem. now the thing is that you will see a diffrent in the video you could use comprsser, but what i would do is blow that 1440x1080 up and see what it looks like. because that would tell you how much you are going to compress it.
i am notif this helps but maybe you have an idea of what to do. i have never used motion yet so i can't say weather it will work better.

    Which os are you using?
How are you connected to the internet?
Have you contacted your isp to make sure the slowness is not coming from their end?
    Max out your ram.
How large is your hard drive and how much hard drive space do you have left?
You you using the latest version of Adobe Flash?

  • When to use Apple Intermediate Codec -v- NTSC  ???

    OK,
After successfully creating two projects - one for YouTube and another on DVD - I found myself in a slump when 3 succeeding projects wouldn’t upload properly to YouTube.
After doing some troubleshooting with people who “might” know what the problem is, it seems the issue with my 4:3 SD uploads was compression. Somewhere, supposedly I had compressed the footage within FCE, and when uploaded to YouTube (which compresses it further) it just wouldn’t work at all (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3DonNt7B08). Somewhere, somehow, I did something in FCE that is prohibiting this video from playing properly (but it plays fine in QuickTime).
I still have no answer as to why 16:9 HD footage wouldn’t upload, unfortunately, so I’ve since removed it. That video failed to upload on YouTube at all; whereas my initial effort went flawlessly. It took forever, but it uploaded fine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhIDIsZ9i7E).
Anyway, back to the point. I’m ready to go for another run of capturing footage from my Canon XHA1, and I want to make sure I have the proper setting(s) within FCE so that when I’m capturing footage to my computer, where I can edit it for final viewing, it comes out non-compressed.
Where do I start? In Easy Setup for example, there are just too many options for me to know what the heck I’m supposed to use (other than PAL, which I believe was European?).
I thought on my initial video that I had used “Apple Intermediate Codec”. What does this mean exactly?
So far, I’ve chosen the following:
    FORMAT - Apple Intermediate Codec
    RATE - 29.97
USE - HDV Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60
After choosing this “Easy Setup” (in Preferances), I then go to File > New Project. Right away, it asks me to “Select Sequence Preset”, with some 16 options being given. Must these options jive with what I selected in “Easy Setup”?
Is there some way that FCE or my iMac are reading my camera through the Firewire & determining specifications?
    Any help appreciated, thanks.

As Tom says, you have to select "HD" first.
The number "60" at the end of the preset shows that it is NTSC. PAL ends in a "50".
I don't know about YouTube but when I upload HDV to Vimeo I do this:-
    Select File>Export>Using QuickTime Conversion.
Click the Options button and select Settings.
Make sure that Compression Type is H.264
Leave Quality on High and set Encoding to Faster. You may think this will not give the best quality, but I doubt if you will see any difference but your files will encode twice as fast.
In the Data Rate section insert Restrict to 5000 kbits/sec.
Click OK and then click the Size button.
In the Dimensions, select 1280 x 720 HD from the dropdown menu. Some people click the deinterlace button. I don't and I have never had any problems . . . your choice. Then keep clicking OK until you get back to the Save window where you can Save your video.
As mentioned above these settings may not give you the theoretically best settings but you are unlikely to notice any difference and your files will encode much faster (or less slower!) and be much smaller.

  • Uprezzing film timeline which uses two different codecs

So I have my final film edit in FCP 6 which uses two different codecs...DVCPROHD 720p60 at 23.98fps and HDV 1080p24 at 23.98fps. There are only about 15 clips which are the HDV codec. My next step is to color correct in apple Color. So I did a quick test where I sent a couple clips of each codec, on the same timeline, into Color and back out into FCP, which seemed to roundtrip without any hitches...the only difference is that the DVCPRO clips came back as ProRes 422HQ 1280x720 and the HDV clips came back as 1920x1080...which is all fine. However, I do want 1080p (1920x1080) as my final output...for Bluray as well as DCP if my film gets picked up by a festival. So what I plan to do for my final output is export my completed Colored timeline to compressor and use ProRes 422 HQ at 1080p. My question is...since there isn't a specific 1080p ProRes HQ codec (like there is for DVCPROHD) but simply the "Geometry" tab in Compressor where you can change the 'Dimensions' to 1920x1080...is this how I "Uprez" my DVCPRO 720p clips to match my HDV 1080p clips?
I just want to make sure NOW, that my workflow will be good all the way up to finishing, before I start sending sections of my timeline to Color...
    Thanks!
    David

OK...you wanted a 1080p final, right? So why shrink the HDV down to 720p, and then blow it back up to 1080p? That's the point of doing both formats separately, and upscaling only the 720p...keeping the HDV at full size.  How noticeable will it be? Test to find out.  Personally, I'd do it my way.
And yes, upscale AFTER you color correct.  As for re-color correcting down the line...why? Color correcting is the final process...do it until it's right...why would you go back? And if you did adjust a couple shots, then just render those back out, and only upscale those and put into that final sequence again.  It's a small patch.
    >why is it better to send the DVCPRO 720p stuff for upscale BEFORE marrying it with the HDV 1080p stuff.
because the HDV is already 1080. Scaling it down to 720, then back up will be TWO generation losses. Why do that?
    >my method of upscaling the 720p with the 1080p stuff at the same time seemed logical to me (the 720p is upscaled while the 1080p stays the same)
But it doesn't...you first will be shrinking it to 720p...then blowing up to 1080p. And HDV is a GOP format without real frames, so the compression really pops when you upscale.
    >just want to know WHY your method is better??
Because I tested this out..mixing 720p DVCPRO HD and HDV...and my method gave the best results.  Call it "experience."

  • Media Manager not deleting unused media from HDV (intermediate codec) clips

I have a project which uses HDV footage which I captured using the Apple Intermediate Codec. I now have a bunch of clips that are very large in file size so I'd like to use the Media Manager to delete all the unused footage from the clips. I have tried countless different selections of sequences, clips in the browser, clips in a timeline etc but can't seem to get the Media Manager to show a smaller file size for the processed files based on 'Use Existing' with 'Delete unused media' option. The two size meters at the top always stay the same. Can the media manager trim HDV/Apple Intermediate Codec footage? If not is there a way to get rid of the footage that I haven't used? Thanks!
    Ben

I've never mastered MM. If I want a small section out of larger clip, I simply just export that section of the clip using 'current settings'.
Hope someone who has tamed the MM beast will step in here and offer you a better way...
    good luck.

  • Why is it taking 19 hours to encode four avi. files. I just bought a new 21" iMac last week and it is just to slow to use. Thanks

I just bought a new 21" iMac last week and it is just to slow to use. Before it used to take a couple of hours now its just way too long

    Hi
As I understands it - This has nothing to do with Your iMac - Any Mac would take the same time.
May be OS and support on the Window-PC platform handles this better.
    • .avi - is no specific codec (file format) but a container and the codec in this might not be one that iDVD can directly use (encode to .mpeg2 as on DVD disks)
So either it just can't do it - or -
iDVD has to back-encode to an usably codec - THIS IS WHAT I THINK HAS HAPPENED
This back-encoding can take serious time - AND the final result usually is far from Good.
    I would
    • find out in what codec the .avi file is (I use QuickTime and in this inspector to read what codec .avi contains) (.mov is also a container)
    • import it into a program that can transcode to a better codec for iDVD - streamingDV or AIC (I GUESS)
    • then use this in iDVD

  • HDV 720p30 codec(?)

I am using snapz pro x to capture machinima at 720p but the machine I am using to capture does not have Final Cut Pro on it and (hence?) does not have the Apple HDV 720p30 codec as an option to save. Where can I locate this for download, or on my machine so that I can keep all my source in the same format?

It isn't available outside of FCP. You will have to save as another format then convert later.

  • Very slow capture for hdv

    Hi
I bought a Sony Hd camcorder, the Sony Hc7.
    It transfers using HDv.
I attempted to start making a movie with the footage shot on this camera in Final cut Pro Hd but it wouldnt read it as my version was pre support for HDV.
However the new version of Final Cut Express would read it and so I bought that. It does capture the footage but very slowly, a 30 second clip previously would take 30 seconds to capture. But now it takes about 1 minute to capture.
    Is this a function of
    1) Using Final Cut Express and not Pro?
    2) USing HDV, is it always this slow compared to standard Def?
    3) My Mac power? I have a G4 with 1.5 ghz Powerpc and 1.25 gb ddr sdram and about 50 gig in internal memory and the scratch disk is set to my external drive with 638 gigs of spare memory.
Any suggestions? I am not keen on buyng a new machine until Apple bring one out with a bluray drive.

It sounds as if it is converting HDV to AIC.
    What computer are you using?

  • E book bought from Waterstones is very slow in use can you, help?

E book bought from Waterstones is unreasonably slow in use can you help, please?
I purchased a copy of “The Complete English Poems” by John Donne as an e-book, I downloaded the e-book successfully, as well as the new Digital Editions software and transferred the e-book to my Sony Reader. However when I try to use the book it is slow opening up and very slow moving between sections, or navigating between the poem and the notes on the poems, typically between three and five minutes. In practice this means that if I wish to consult a note on a poem it can take five minutes to move from the poem to the note then another five minutes to navigate back, giving a time of ten minutes to consult a note. This is not really feasible.
I have had no problem downloading and reading other books, from Waterstones bought after the John Donne.
I have tried deleting and re-loading the John Donne, as well as resetting the reader to no avail.
I contacted Sony support who says that as my other e-books from Waterstones and other sources work perfectly, then the fault lies with “The Complete English Poems” and not the Sony reader.
Please note that I had a similar problem with a Waterstones edition of “the King James Version of The Holy Bible. “ This problem was never resolved.
