Real World Experience - TIPS - Pal to NTSC and Authoring DVDS on both

I have just completed a DVD project.
It was shot and edited in Pal and then authored to both Pal and NTSC DVDS ( Pal for Europe - NTSC for Japan and USA)
Standards Conversion:
I used both compressor and graham Nattress' excellent G (for Graham?) Standards converter.
Compressor was a fast work around for a quick pal to ntsc conversion at ok quality. Since my footage is very demanding (lots of handheld heli shots, water housing footage)i imagine it was giving the converters a real work out).
The Nattress G converter was much slower but the results were as close to perfection as i would imagine a software solution can get. Obviously the extra render time was working extra hard to get the conversion looking good.
For anyone going down this path - For your master you just have to use the natress converter- thanks Graham - best $100 i have spent this year.
MPG2 encoding
i did this using compressor and it worked well.
Here is the rub - i THOUGHT compressor was not doing my MPG 2 conversion at acceptable quality - it was actually the lack of quality out of compressors fast and easy solution for pal - ntsc that was giving me banding on moving objects and color issues.
I suspect this may be where some people think they are coming unstuck with compressor. (go back and check you ntsc conversion relative to your original pal quality)
I hope this saves anyone else in my situation some time.
In summary - when working in PAL (ie you are shooting and editing in Europe or Australia)Your work flow should be - shoot and edit in Pal ,convert with Natress, encode with compressor (compressor 2.1 - i use 7.7 mbs max, 6.0 mbs av - 2 pass variable - use ac3 for audio) - which has actually been working well for me (despite various threads about issues with compressor)
Hope this come up nicely for anyone doing a search. Thank you to everyone who has helped me on the way and good night!

Ok cool, thanks Stan.
Re-doing the Encore stuff, as much as that would/will suck,   it's not my worst fear.. the thing that scares me the most is the thought of re-doing all of the Premiere work again..   If an NTSC Encore project can convert a PAL Premiere working file to a NTSC DVD, I can live with re-working the Encore stuff.. And yea, Dynamic link takes care of all of the chapter markers,   so that wouldn't be a big issue - it'd just be a matter of re-building the menus..
But yea, if anyone has a definite yes or no answer on whether or not Encore can turn a PAL Premiere project into a NTSC DVD, I'd love to know..     The person I'm doing the work for doesn't want to spend thousands of dollars getting PAL dvds printed etc unless we absolutely know it's going to be a complete re-start to get it to NTSC..
Thanks again,
Rory
Hi Rory.
It's not possible in Encore or Premiere.
The conversion process is a complex one & consists of changing the actual resolution from 720x576 to 720x480, which gives a very different shaped pixel as well.
Then it also changes the frame rate of the footage from 25 to 29.97.
The easiest way to do this with Adobe tools is to use Atter Effects, making sure that the AE render is locked to the duration of the composition - this is critical, or you will end up with footage at the wrong speed. All menus will need to be rebuilt.
Sorry I cannot give you better news.
As a general rule of thumb, if in doiubt - create & author in NTSC as there are almost no PAL setups that cannot output either pure NTSC or PAL-60, yet there are very few that can go the other way.....

  • Real-world experience with Exchange 2010 SP3 RU5+ and Powershell 4?

The support-ability matrix for Exchange (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff728623(v=exchg.150).aspx) says Exchange
2010 SP3 RU5+ and Powershell 4 are compatible.  But, there is very little actual discussion about how well that works.
I use Powershell extensively for mission critical and somewhat complex processes, with Exchange 2010 on 2008 R2 and AD access/reads/updates.
Can I get a summary of the caveats and benefits from someone who has actually done this in a
real-world/production scenario (more than one server, managing from a separate non-Exchange server), and who has scripting experience with this configuration?
Also, how has this affected EMC operations?
As always thank you in advance!

I believe the matrix states that its supported to install Exchange into an environment where __ version of WMF is present.  Exchange 2010, launched from a Win 2012 server, reports version 2.0 when you call $host.  For example, calling the ActiveDirectory
module from EMS on an Win 2012 server (ps 3.0) fails.
I'll double check the extent of this scenario and get back to you.

  • Converting PAL to NTSC and making a DVD

I have a couple of .avi files, some are in PAL and others in NTSC, I wanna make a DVD in NTSC mode, How can I convert the files?

    Hi
This is not easy and You need other programs to do this.
    .avi.
You can use MPEG-Streamclip to convert the AVI files so that QuickTime can play them
    and to streamingDV for iMovie.
This may work - I had great problems to get .avi into anything usably.
*PAL to NTSC or other way*
    A. Commersial DVDs - No Not at all - Not even legal to discuss.
    B. Home made DVDs (without copy protection)
    NTSC ---> PAL.
    • Most often not necessary - Most stand alone PAL-DVD players playback NTSC
(if TV is old in BL/W)
    PAL ---> NTSC.
    • If played on Mac - not necessary AT ALL
    • If on NTSC-DVD-player - CONVERSION IS NEEDED - nearly no Stand alone NTSC-DVD-players
    playback PAL at all.
    • MPEG Streamclip (free on internet) to convert to NTSC
    • Set up an NTSC project (29.97fps or 30) in iDVD and import then burn
    I burn to
    • Verbatim DVD-R
    • Set down burn speed in iDVD to x1 or x4 recommended by many
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk before burning (IMPORTANT)

  • Transfer PAL to NTSC and extract audio:  Best Place in L.A.

I have a little record company.  I'm going to release a video of a concert as a DVD and will ALSO release a CD of the same concert.  I want to extract audio from the PAL (for the CD)at best quality for remastering.
I also want to Convert the PAL to NTSC so I can edit it in FCP.  (I assume that's the best quality Video I can get under the circumstances.  Is that so?  Is there a better way?  It's music, so it HAS TO BE in sync)
I will do the editing for the DVD master, and my mastering guy will deal with the music for the CD.
    1. Can anyone suggest the best place in L.A. to do these transfers?
    2.  Can anyone suggest the best place in L.A. to author and replicate the DVDs?

    Laurie,
I've put the word out to the LA contingent of FCP elitists about your question. Hopefully one of them will respond.
If you decide to go through a software based conversion, there is a thread over in the FCP forum that will be useful to read.

  • Real world performance/speed difference between 3ghz and 3.2

    Hello,
I have a 2008, (not clovertown) Harpertown 3.0ghz Mac Pro. I wanted to know if its feasible to upgrade the cpus to the 3.2 ones? Also, what is the REAL WORLD speed/performance difference between the 3.0 and 3.2? I am so stressed out over this that I really need to have an answer to this.
Not that I am going to buy the 3.2 processors, just wanting to see what I am missing here in terms of percentage overall between my mac pro and a 3.2ghz mac pro from 2008.
    Thank you,

You realize that by now you can probably guess what some of our answers might be?
Real world... well, in the real world you drive to work stuck in traffic most of the time, too.

  • How to check the format (PAL or NTSC) of a DVD?

I wonder if someone can tell me how to check the format (PAL or NTSC) of DVD’s that I receive from my friends around the world. Many of them have no marking as to the format... Is there some software that can do this?

    Hello Peace Freak,
have a look at myDVDedit (http://www.mydvdedit.com). It's actually designed to do postproduction on a DVD, but will also display a lot of info, such as TV standard, 16:9 vs. 4:3, etc.
Insert your DVD, then launch myDVDedit and open the VIDEO_TS folder contained in your DVD. Click the IFO tab to find the information you're looking for.

  • I need to author DVD for both ntsc, pal,& different regions.Need some help

    Hey guys
I have a school project in relation with a company. We have to create many DVDs for there training courses. They train dogs and they need us to edit the video footage and author the dvds READY FOR SALE.
First off. I don't know at this moment but I believe that these dvds might need to be in both pal and ntsc format, maybe also in different regions. Therefore my first question is
    1. What format should I convert the video footage to, before I start my video editing, if I want to author my final edit to dvd?
--> Would it be mpeg2 min 6 mbps max 8 mbps because as I know that is the format for dvd. Or do you leave it as the native camera format eg DV.
    2. What frame size should I convert that original video footage to aswell?
    3. What things do I need to know regarding pal and ntsc formats. How do I prepare a dvd ready for both formats? What format do I edit in
    4. What do I need to know regarding doifferent regions, and how do I set up my dvd for different regions?
    5. Is there anything else I need to know before I start editing so I do get into any trouble later on?

dang itpowda, you killing me.. haha jk!
anyway, ok i see where you can be confused. hopefully this can answer yoru questions.
ok in the NTSC world, if you are creating a graphic file for exampe for TV, then you would create the file with a square pixel (PAR = 1.0 in this case) and your frame size will be 720x540 only because if you create it using the rectagular NTSC pixel, your image will look sueezed and you would have to resize the graphic anyway for TV because remember, you would be creating it on a computer monitor that has a PAR of 1.0 natively, although your DAR is the same, the PAR is not. now, when you have video in D1 NTSC, you would have a rectangular pixel (PAR = 0.9 in this case) and a frame size of 720x486.
ok, now PAL. once again, if we are creating a CG file for video on a computer, we can creat it using a square pixel and then resize it for PAL TV and the PAR in this case would be 720x768. the reason for this is because in PAL, the PAR is 1.0667, NOT .09 as in NTSC. both standards share the same rectangular pixel.
now for the DAR. lets assume we are talking about a full frame TV set for a minute. we know that both PAL and NTSC standards, although with different PAR (0.9 vs. 1.0667) have the same DAR (in this case 1.33:1 in decimal form which you obtain from dividing the ratio (whole number) first number by the second). you have to remember we get the DAR of 4:3 assuming that it is a FF picture because the image on the screen takes up 4 units wide to 3 units high. in PAL or NTSC this is true, regardless of PAR. the differences in PAL and NTSC come from the refresh rate, PAR, frame rate and color space to name some and keep it simplistic.
i hope that is somewhat clear. now, to answer your questions:
First thing. If PAL and NTSC both had a PAR of 1:1, they would both have a DAR of 720*540, true?
nope, if you have or want a PAR of 1:1 (to create CG files), then NTSC would be 720x540 and PAL would be 720x768.
the rest of your questions are pretty much false :P
now, you might be wondering, HOW N THE HECK DID HE GET THOSE NUMBERS!
ok, lets say you need to create a CG file on a computer, but want to keep the PAR right (remember, if you create said file with a frame size of 720x576 and a DAR of 1:1, your image will be squeezed a bit) you have to take into account a specific formula in video needed to do such and many more conversions!
let me show you how i obtained 720x768 for a PAR of 1:1...
we know we want to keep the width the same, since we are creating a image file for the PAL video.
lets get some numbers straight first:
    width = 576
DAR = 4:3 (or 1.333 in decimal form)
    so it would be 576 * 1.333 = 767.808 OR as a whole number 768.
how did i get the above formula:
i know the DAR of my input (from 4:3 video), i know the PAR of my ouput (from a 1:1 CG file) and i have my height from video (576). so the unknown variable in this case is the width.
so it would look something like this:
    width = 576 * (4/3) / (1/1)
ok, we know that we want to convert the ratio of 4:3 and 1:1 into decimals (makes it easier to work with mathmatically).
when we do this, we get:
    w = 576 * 1.333 / 1
we know that when you divide a number by one, you get the same value back, so for simplicity sake, lets take the sole 1 out, since it doesnt matter because 1.333 wont change in value:
    w = 576 * 1.333 = 676.808 or when you round up to the nearest whole number, you get w = 678!
as long as you have the 3 of the 4 possible variables for the above formual, you can mathmatically get the variable you need.
    i am exhausted, i need a beer!

  • Converting PAL to NTSC for a dvd

I have a quicktime PAL movie that I want to burn to a dvd to send to the US as NTSC.
    It's just a short movie using 720 x 576 size and 25 fps.
When I set up iDVD it warns me just before burning that I am trying to burn an NTSC dvd using a PAL format media and I don't know if this will result in a poor quality or an unplayable movie.
Can anyone please advice how to change the PAL movie to NTSC in Compressor so that I can make a good quality version of the PAL file into an NTSC file?
Thanks a lot for any advice.

    Hi
Just going from iMovie (PAL) to iDVD (NTSC) does work BUT VERY BAD RESULT
    I do.
    • In iMovie Export out as QuickTime full Quality QT.mov file
    • Use JES_Deinterlacer - Google it - It's FREE
    • Here I open the QT.mov and let it convert to NTSC - VERY GOOD - and save with a new name
    • Open iDVD and make a NTSC project
    • Now import the converted movie
    • Burn
To make sure that it plays well in US I also do.
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk - Others not interesting
    • I use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    • I set in iDVD pref/Advance/burn speed down to x1
This has worked for me and been confirmed from sunny Calif.

  • Real world use of Lookup, Fuzzy Lookup and Fuzzy Grouping?

    Hello Experts,
Could someone please tell me the use of lookup, fuzzy lookup and fuzzy grouping tasks giving one example of each?
I know the work what these tasks do but I want to know in which scenario and for what functionality do we use these tasks?
Appreciate if you write down your own experiences.
Please no URL's of MSDN/TechNet and so on. I am tired reading it.
    -Vaibhav Chaudhari

    Hello Vaibhav,
A use of lookup: need to verify if a record or a corresponding entry exists in target before inserting it or not, it is also possible to use for merging / syncing data.
Fuzzy Lookup Transformation: is when you need to find similarities in text, in simple words it is the T-SQL SOUNDEX function, does it sound like what it does to you? So if you have say car brand names e.g. BMW and VW this function will confidentially match
these (depends on level chosen) even though they are not closely related. But it would not match BMW to GMC.
Fuzzy Grouping is when you need to just group related text. It is a close cousin to the lookup, but gets applied to text sets and forms them, too. Used for data de-duplication (by match score).

  • Real world experience: Is FCE 3.5 usable on a MacBook?

I've got a college freshman looking for a MacBook, but he uses FCE HD and will be upgrading to FCE HD 3.5 but is it usable on a MacBook. Has anyone actually used it?
The graphics hardware does not meet the minimums specified by Apple if I read them correctly. The Apple store definetly made me aware of it.
Any first or second hand knowledge appreciated. Thanks, Mark

Apple support is still holding that Apple does not support FCE on the MacBook. They also stated that they can't get it to run. I personally don't their that their telling the truth about they can't get it to run. If they are then everyone who says it loads and runs great is not telling the truth.
I'm going to check the Intel specs but other than memory I thought the 950 acts the same as a AGP card. Several have stated that profiler does show it's compatible with Quartz Extreme. I plan to check this out my self.
Apple should make an open statement that they don't support it and also tell us why. We want no BS, Apple just justify why you will not support it.
All of that said has anyone use FCE 3.5 on a MacBook with an external display?

  • Pal to NTSC conversion and burning disk

I had problems burning a disk with ilife 5.0, so I bought 6.0. I make a movie using only one picture using iMovie HD. I shared this movie with iDVD and tried to burn a disk. An error message can up saying "are we trying to burn a PAL movie with a NTSC disk? When I procede anyway the disk won't burn. I looked in help to convert a PAL movie to a NTSC movie. When I went through this procedure, I got a disk icon as a Quick time movie. I couldn't burn this using disk utility. What is going on here. Wy does the new iLife 6.0 make a PAL movie. I didn't tell it to do so. Does iLife come programmed to make PAL movies, which I understand are the Euorpean format. I used to make movies just fine when I first got iLife 5.0 so I know how to use the program. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

NTSC is the standard deployed in the USA and some other countries (post war countries relying on US for reconstruction). While the "rest of the world" looked for much-needed enhancement to NTSC, which gave birth to PAL and SECAM. Only NTSC and PAL is used for DVDs.
NTSC and PAL are television (chroma) standards. TV sets strongly rely on their power source for image synchronization. US countries use 110V/60Hz, while the rest of the world rely on (the more efficient) 220V/50Hz (multiplying by 2 the voltage divides by 4 the power rating of appliances). So, frame rate is 60Hz on one side and 50Hz on the other. PAL develops 100 more horizontal lines than NTSC (TV sets). Because of "interlacing" (to artificially reduce screen flicker), video source frame rate is 25 or 30.
In the end, converting PAL to NTSC and vice-versa is a very tough job: missing frames are "missing" and must be extrapolated. Extraneous frames needs to be dropped. Same for missing/extra lines. This is professionally done by using complex equipment capable of doing these interpolations equally balanced over the timeframes.
Because of the size of the US market, it is almost impossible to find multi-standard compatible equipments (TV sets, DVD players) in the US. While in Europe the huge majority of equipment are tri-standard (NTSC, PAL, SECAM), - for the video sources such as DVD players and various tape based recorders - and the TV sets also support the various flavors of these standards for the wireless transmission (sub-carriers, polarization, etc).
In the end, what is the benefit of a conversion? to send a homemade movie to a friend in a country of different format? Then, using a computer as player can be a good palliative.
    This, as my 2 cents.

  • Region 1 (NTSC) and Region 2 (PAL)

Is it possible to watch both Region 1 and Region 2 DVDs on my iMac? I currently live in the UK and have many region 2 (PAL) DVDs, I am about to move back to the US and would like to continue playing my Region 2 )PAL) DVDs but would also like to play my Region 1(NTSC) DVDs I have back in the states. Is there any way I can continue to watch my UK DVDs?
Currently I can only 'switch' between regions 5 times, then I am done, I've already switched once due to my move to the UK.
    Cheers,
    Justin

MacTheRipper will save the DVD to your hard disk and delete all region codes at the same time, so that you can view them from your hard disk. As the process is pretty fast (a few minutes, depending on the DVD) it can be used to bypass the region coding. It will create a VIDEO_TS folder that you can open with DVD Player (the app that came with your Mac and is part of OS X). It will take a LOT of HD space (up to 8 GB) so you may have to erase them after viewing.
VLC, on the other hand, will replace DVD Player and decode DVDs from both regions through a software process. DVD Player will still pop-up and ask you to change your drive's region coding, unless you change your Systems Preferences (Hardware > CDs and DVDs > When I insert a video DVD : set to ignore or to open VLC, instead of DVD Player which opens by default). VLC will not save anything to disc.

  • PAL to NTSC conversion

    Hi
I tried using compressor to do a PAL to NTSC conversion on a completed project, but found it pixelated all still photos and graphics in my project. It was also going to take 18 hrs (macbook pro 2.4ghz)
So I have tried using JES deinterlacer.
I've done a couple of tests using Jes Deinterlacer to convert PAL to NTSC and below are the results:
Test1 - default settings, dvd came out with some minimal artifacts every fourth frame, but only in certain shots.
Test2 - reinterlace chroma option, no real difference to default settings, still minimal artifacts every fourth frame in certain shots
Test3 - reinterlace chroma option, progressive out and telecine instead of blend, this option appear to increase artifact pulsing, in certain shots.
Decided to go with default settings as no improvement of fourth frame pulsing in reinterlace chroma option test.
Unfortunately my project (75 mins long) still had artifact pulsing which appeared to get worst as the dvd got closer the end of the program. I can't work out why certain shots appear fine while others have this pulsing effect.
Really not sure what to do now, any suggestions?
