Reality vs Blackberry for grandma?

I'm trying to learn the Samsung Reality, but it seems so complicated.  My Samsung Reality book of "Tips, Hints, and Shortcuts" is not as extensive as I would like it to be.  They certainly used a "shortcut" when publishing the book.  Half of it is upside down and in Spanish.  There is no index to find something more quickly.  There is only a table of contents.  The book only explains a quick view of using the Reality.  I need more help.  Would a Blackberry be easier to learn for this old grandma?  I want to learn so I can respond more easily to my children and grandchildren.  I also want to check e-mails on my phone.  I use Facebook and Twitter, so it might be fun to also use those options from my phone as well.  I believe I have 30 days to decide if I want to return my Reality.  Which do you think is better for me?  The Samsung Reality, or the Blackberry?

Hi, Trudy. If you don't object to the $29.99 BlackBerry data plan vs. the $9.99 plan you can get for the Reality, it sounds to me like you'd really enjoy a BlackBerry. I've not used the Reality, but I find the BlackBerry fairly intuitive to operate (and I went from a very basic flip phone to a BlackBerry).
BlackBerry definitely rules as far as e-mail capabilities. If you plan to use Facebook and Twitter, you won't have to worry about your usage with the unlimited data plan. Plus, you get a lot of bang for your buck with unlimited ... you can listen to podcasts, streaming radio ... all sorts of fun stuff.
I'm sure the manual will help, but I had good luck finding help online, such as on the BlackBerry forum here. You can also, of course, find help with the Reality on the boards (try the Cell Phone General Devices area). Ask away! That's what the boards are for.
Yes, you do have 30 days to exchange or return. Keep in mind that you can only exchange once.
Good luck deciding! And I'm sure you will figure it all out, whichever device you choose.

Having a BlackBerry device won't allow you to get the full services of BlackBerry phones. In such case your should contact your mobile operator to know how you can get BlackBerry services.

  • Do I dare use new Blackberry for Mac for 3-way sync?

I have a Blackberry 8310 running v. 4.5.0.11.  I used PocketMac to sync with my personal MacBook (Leopard 10.5.7)  and  Microsoft Entourage, with lots of problems around duplicate records. I have not tried the new Blackberry for Mac.
Last month I took a new job and have to use the Enterprise services for wireless, continuous sync of my blackberry to the company's server.  It works great.  But I have been keeping  my contacts and calendar on my Mac, not only on the phone and the enterprise server.  I have not synced the Mac and the berry for weeks waiting for this new software.  I have many contacts and calendar events on my Mac that I don't want to manually transfer to corp. email.
    1. Will a sync between my berry and my Mac with the new Blackberry software work without messing up my Entourage?
    2. What problems can I expect if I try?
    3. Any advice to avoid problems; e.g., turn off connections when syncing?
    Many thanks in advance!

  • Help! I downloaded Blackberry for Mac and synch'd 2 days ago only to lose all pre 20 Nov emails!!!

Hello I have had a terrible error occur on synching with Blackberry for Mac.  I downloaded the desktop manager a couple of days ago so I could synch my calendar and when I connected, it said I didn't have the latest versions on my BB so these were downloaded and added to my BB before I synched the calendar.  This seemed to reset lots of things on my BB which meant I had to take a long time to add themes, input registration codes again for 3rd parties, set up the look of my BB again which was irritating but not that bad.  The terrible thing is that I have lost all my messages including those in the saved folders prior to the time I synched.
Does anyone know of a fix for this please?  I am desperate!
    Cheers, Lorraine

    Hey Felix007,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
Did you create a backup prior to the update of the software?    To check go into Device at the top, and click on restore.  If it does show a backup file there then you can restore your email messages.  If not, then you will not get the emails back.

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
To provide help, we need to know some specifics:
What specific BB Model is it?
What OS level is the BB running?
Are you running any additional add-on applications?
Do you properly close applications when not in use?
How long can you go between crashes?
That should be enough to get us going to help you.
    Cheers!

  • I've only had my blackberry for a day and everything is ...

I've only had my blackberry for a day and everything is fine apart from instant messaging. If i try and add someone, it just lists them as pending even though they don't receive anything on their phone. Likewise, if someone tries to add me, i receive no notification. I've tried sorting out the problem on the phone but that doesn't seem possible! So basically, i have no idea how to get it to work.

Is this when using BlackBerry Instant Messenger? This application works ONLY with other BlackBerry, please know that.
Try this, ask the other user to email you their PIN number by composing an email on the BlackBerry to you, and typing "mypin" in the email, and when you receive their PIN, enter that number in the BlackBerry Messenger to Add Contact.

  • Unlocked Apple TV 2 or ATV3 for grandma?

    Hello All!
Awhile ago I came across a good deal on an unlocked ATV2. I decided to get it for my grandma. However I haven't been able to set it up for her yet because she has a giant tv cabinet.
Her TV died yesterday, so today is the day! I got her a new tv and a neighbor is going to help move the cabinet. But now I'm torn. I'm still getting used to the unlocked ATV2 myself and I fear it might be too complicate for her.
    And I want it....
So I was thinking of going an getting her an ATV3. Could I convert media files via handbrake, put them in her computers iTunes library and she could stream them to the tv? Does the computer have to be on? Any thoughts on this?
Sorry for rambling, I want her to get a lot of use out of it instead of complaining about cable. Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Yes the Apple TV streams content from an iTunes library on a computer that is switched on.

  • Java ME embedded database used in BlackBerry for mobile CRM

Interested in business applications of Java ME mobile technology, or in embedded database systems available for Java ME?
If so, take a look at the news posted on McObject's 'Perst Blog'. Maximizer, a British Columbia company, has adopted the Perst Lite open source, object-oriented database for Java ME to integrate with its customer relationship management (CRM) software on BlackBerry devices.
What Maximizer gets from Perst Lite -- in addition to efficient data management and 'transparent persistence' for developers -- is support for the JSR 75
specification, which enables database files to be saved to SD cards within the BlackBerry smartphones.

  • Finding the PSK to set up my blackberry for wireless

hi there...i lost my old blackberry and got a new one, and now i need the psk (pre shared key) in order to have wireless access at home on my phone. last time i called linksys tech support they charged me $30 to give me the IP address where i could find my password, which is totally ridiculous. I tried going to 192.168.1.1 and it would not show up. how do i find my psk?

    What router are you using?
Point your browser to 192.168.1.1 and login to your router.  The user name  (for most Linksys routers) should be left blank, and the password is "admin"  (with no quotes), unless you changed it.   Some older routers have a user name of "admin".
If you cannot get anything at 192.168.1.1 then perhaps this is not your router's address. In Windows, go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key. Look at the "Default Gateway". Is it 192.168.1.1 ? Point your browser to the "Default Gateway", then login to your router.
After you have logged into your router, go to the "Security" tab  (sometimes the "Wireless" tab)  and look for your encryption method  (WEP, WPA, WPA2).  Nearby you will see the "key" or "pre-shared key".  This is what you need to enter into your blackberry.
For WEP, enter WEP "key 1"  (found in the router) into your blackberry, not the WEP password or passphrase.
For WPA or WPA2, enter the "key"  (sometimes called the password or passphrase) into your blackberry.

  • Should I purchase iPhone or Blackberry for this task?

I specifically want a phone to receive emails (maybe 4 per day) and access websites to enter data (say 4 times per day). I've been told that for those who want to do this regularly the iPhone freezes and is slower than the Blackberry. Almost all spoken to say that for emails, the Blackberry is superior. Any comments or suggestions please?

If you are talking about that low a number of emails the speed is not going to matter so the BB will not give you any added benefit. To be compared to the BB you need a push email account on the iPhone which you can get by signing on to MobileMe, use a yahoo push mail account (free) or an exchange account.
As far as data entry, I would go with the iPhone due to the larger screen than some BBs, touch screen, etc. Safari has been pretty stable for me and I have done some data entry with it.

  • How to send phone to Blackberry for service?

My husband has had his phone for some time now but has always had problems with it staying charged.  He does not use it nearly enough to warrant it dying so quickly (they aren't allowed to use their phones on site)  Back when I had a BB curve I had the same problem.  My phone would be fully charged when I left for work at 7am and by 11am it would be dead just sitting in my locker.  I sent my phone back and they sent me a brand new one as it was the phone and not the battery that was the problem.  I suspect the same thing is happening with my husbands phone as he has 3 different batteries and none of them stay charged even without use.
The internet/BB site says to contact our service provider but we did not get our phones from our service provider.  We own them outright and purchased them directly from Blackberry as my Dad worked for them.  How do I send a phone back to BB for service that came directly from BB?!  We cannot find this information anywhere.

Surely you are better off asking your Dad if he used to work for them.

  • ISynch and Blackberry for Phonebook / Calendar

    All,
Has anyone had success using the Bluetooth sync features to just get their calendars / phonebooks over to their Blackberry 7100 series handheld?
I'm planning on getting the new unit through Verizon and was curious if iSync sees the unit because it does indeed support the Bluetooth profiles needed to sync.
    -Josh

You can't sync any Blackberry with a Mac via Bluetooth.
You can barely do it on Windows.
The Blackberry 4.1 OS is the only OS which supports Bluetooth sync, and it's currently only possible to sync via Bluetooth using the 4.1 version of Blackberry Desktop manager on a Windows PC.
To date, the only option for syncing a Mac and a Blackberry is to use Pocketmac for Blackberry and a USB cable.

  • Where do I register my Blackberry for warranty?

I have been all over the blackberry.com web site looking for where I register my phone for warranty purposes. Where is it? Thanks.

    Hiya!
Just to expand on what Bill said. Yes your carrier would expedite the warranty for the manufacturer. however, if you buy it from a third party source (ebay, craigslist, etc) they may not be able to. Just to set that expectation.
But the only way to know for sure it to call your carrier directly as Bill had mentioned.
