Really bad performance from my mac

I have a problem with my 20" intel mac, its about three years old and the only modification I have made to it is adding two 1gb sticks to increase the RAM.
My DVD writer started to refuse to write DVDs and then for no reason my mac started to freeze for about two/three seconds about 2 months ago, first it was a little annoying then it started to get worse. Software updates would take ages to download and install, and by that I mean something that should last 20 minutes was taking 3 or 4 hours.
Its got a 160gb hard disk and I was pretty much full at the time so I started to remove some old stuff from my documents, unfortunately I was a little trigger happy and removed a key file for vmware which is where my trouble really began. After reinstalling vmware things got considerably worse, I don't think it was the vmware software that was the cause but searching many websites, after resetting the pram etc nothing seemed to clear up the freezing problem which was now lasting about 2 or 3 minutes at a time every 10 mins or so.
Santa Claus left me a very nice 27 inch brand new mac under the tree which was great but my old mac still needed some TLC. After checking the fans, and internet connection I called apple (I don't have apple care) and again resetting prams, booting from DVD the machine seemed to come back to normal operation. The next day however, the same problems happened again. After a few days I reformatted the hard disk and reinstalled tiger. This took over a day of installing from the DVD which cant be right. Moving my photo's, home made movies and music over my wireless network to the new mac took another 3 days, all the time the disk on the old mac seemed fine, the fan was a little noisy but nothing too bad.
Now anything over 50mb refuses to download in the software updates and its now unuseable. I am pretty much all out of ideas, can anyone on here help or have seen this type of issue before?

I had a look at what changing the disk would involve, the same disks are pretty inexpensive but I dont like the look of the process in particular removing the tin foil etc.
The iBook is the most difficult Mac laptop to service. It is very intense and requires quite a bit of disassembly before you can access the HDD. However, it is quite doable with basic mechanical skills, time, care and a lot of patience. If you are willing to attempt it we can guide you through the process. Or you can have someone do it for you. There is a service I used here in Madison that will do it for $75 plus the cost of the new HDD. If you are interested, let me know.
Thinking of buying a minimax and booting off an external drive instead. Does anyone have any experience of this?
You can boot off a firewire external HDD. You have two options. You can purchase an external 3.5" firewire HDD which gives you higher rotational speeds in addition to larger capacities. These also have their own power supply. The disadvantage is that you need to plug it into household electricty to use it. The other option is to get a 2.5" external firewire enclosure, install a 2.5" drive in it and you can boot the computer from it. These are powered by the firewire bus and don't need an external power supply. They are much more easily portable.
Whichever option you choose, you need a firewire drive as you cannot boot a PowerPC Mac from a USB device. I would strongly urge that whatever drive you choose that you get one with the more reliable Oxford chipset. You can get information about these options at Other World Computing. You can call their tech support for more specific advice. They are very helpful and are a reliable source.

AudioFileOpenURL really bad performance when opening big *.m4a files

I did some testing for a project of mine and noticed that opening a big .m4a file with AudioFileOpenURL is really slow.
I tested opening about 25000 audio files.
All of them, except large mp4 podcasts like the engadget podcast, open really fast.
There seems to be a direct connection between the size of the file and the time it takes for AudioFileOpenURL to open it.
Files that are around 3MB have no noticable delay and files around 30MB will take seconds to open.
While opening AudioFileOpenURL consumes a lot of cpu.
I tried setting the correct fileTypeHint but that makes no difference at all.
Is there any explanation for this behaviour?
I can not continue with my project until i'm able to open all audio files in a reasonable time.
Maybe somebody has an idea how I can speed this up.

The question at this point is, How are the reports going to be used and deployed once they are in production?
I'd look at it from that direction.
For example... They may be able to dump the data directly to another database on a separate server that would insulate the main enterprise server. This would allow the main server to run the necessary queries during off peak hours and would isolate any reporting activity to a "reporting database".
This would also keep the data secure and encrypted (it would continue to enjoy the security provided by an RDBMS). Text & csv files can be copied, emailed, altered & deleted by anyone who sees them. Placing them in encrypted .zip folders prevents them from being read by external applications.
<Hope you liked the sales pitch I wrote for you to give to the client... =^)
If all else fails and you're stuck using the csv files, at least see if they can get it all on one file. Joining the 2 files is killing you performance wise... More so than using 1 massive file.

Larger scale Time Machine setup, really bad performance

Hi,
we have 2 Intel XServes running OS X Server 10.5.2 with 2 XServe RAID setups, each with 5,2TB capacity. The first server now contains about 2TB data and we would like to try and use the second one as a Time Machine backup destination using AFP. The initial backup is still running after 10 days, and that backup is only 429GB. I've got a couple of questions:
- Somehow I seriously doubt even Apple ever tried a Time Machine backup like this, but has anyone ever tried something like this?
- The backup is running really slowly, only 300KB/s or something. The link between these servers is 1GBit. Is there anyway we can speed this up?
- What would be the best alternative for using Time Machine? It would be nice if we could offer the same functionality (e.g. retaining multiple versions of the same file for a period of time).

From what I can gather, TM is not intended for the type of use you expect out of it. That being said, what I suggest you do is test the throughput between your two Xservs. Create a 5GB file (which is a reasonable size for this test) on one of the Macs, then use a terminal window with the timer command to cp that file from its home volume to a volume on the other Xserve. You will see exactly how long the file takes to copy. If the copy is very slow, then it is unrealistic to expect TM to be faster, but you may be able to do things to improve your network throughput.
For an alternative, probably your best bet is EMC's Retrospect.

H.264 encoder (in cs3) produces really bad aliasing from AVI MJpeg source

I have many 640x480 mjpg avi files from a Canon Powershot camera that I put in a 640x360 project. I keep the vids at 100% scale and just leave them cropped top and bottom.
What I find interesting is that when I encode my project out using h.264 (keeping the same 640x360, square pixels, ridiculously high bitrates, etc etc) I great really terrible aliasing. If I use MPEG2 (with basically the same settings, though obviously much lower bitrate), it looks fantastic and quite similar to my original videos.
Can anyone enlighten me as to why this is? Is there some secret setting in h.264 that I'm missing?
My project settings are:
Timebase: 30.00 frames/second
Frame size: 640x360
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixels (1.0
Fields: No Fields (Progressive Scan)
The AVI files show these properties in Premiere:

How to solve bad performance in vi server

I'm useing vi server in a recursively programming structure in labview 7.1.
I have very bad performance result so i made a test comparing the speed of che various vi server call and the native.
my tests are:
normal calling.
vi server calling by reference node
vi server calling by invoke node
for each vi server calling type i tried:
unique reference calling
different reference calling
different reference, preloaded, calling
the only 1 case i found a loosing of performace acceptable 24% respect the normal calling: vi server calling by reference node with unique reference.
unfortunately this kind of calling is able to catch come kind of recunsion an forbidden it and this calling wait all the time the end of the execution of the vi called.
All the oter kinds of caling have very bad performance: from 90% to 99,9% LESS then the normal calling (10 to 1000 times more in execution time).
In addition there is a prblem in invoke colling: if you execute a invoke node with wait until done true, the mouse pointer fliks with the busy icone. that heppens in all the possible configuration.
I would like ti know if someuone as some solution to this performance problem and if Labview 8.0 fixs this problems.

I've made some researches for you and, what can I say is that there is a certain number of requests about "vi server performances". There are some things that are in general suggested in this situation:
1) Be "minimalist" about the use of images, graph,... And avoid Large data structures: wiring large structures into/out-of sub-VI's can take time: pass the smallest amount of data.
2) Avoid repeated calls. Calling the sub-VI's frequently, in a loop for example, create a call over-head that could be an issue. For the same reason put the "wait until" function with a specification of time in order to run loops only as often as strictly required.
However, about your question of fixing the problem with LabVIEW 8.0, I suggest you to download the Evaluation Version of LabVIEW 8.2 and try by yourself if performances are better.

Convertion from pdf is really bad

Hi !
First, i m pretty ignorant in making pdf form...
I need to make an interractive form from a pdf file (25 pages) given by a friend.
he gave me 2 version of the file, a 'normal' pdf and one in form version (without any calcul or interractivity).
(but it lacks 3 fonts)
I tried to make it with Acrobat :
with both version of the file,
i c'ant find all the events i need in 'Action' tab when i try to add some code on a textBox like 'change', 'docReady'...
But the way i can make the form is really good. In fact i only need to add textbox, radiobutton... i don't want to edit text.
With LiveCycle i create a new document from the pdf and i select interractive. i need to change tooltip, visibility of objects..., wich can t be done with non interractive form (if i understand correctly ?).
my problem is that the converted file is really bad, the convertion log contains a lot of errors.
and it will take me a lot of time to correct, adapt it, plus, images are pixelised ( why ??).
My questons :
Can i make interractive form without converting the document ? like with Acrobat or non interractive forms ?
Is there a way to have a source file instead of the pdf ? wich contains images, fields... so there will be no convertion.

Now the quality is not "really" bad anymore, it is bad. ;-)
The quality got better, but still there is a difference between drawing shapes and cell borders. And the difference is causing problems with customers, who are demanding professional quality.
Here is a .jpg of the original Excel table. The drawing shape is the outer one, the cell borders are the lines beneath the data. Both line types are very delicat. This is how it should be.
And this is how it looks after a pdf-print with setting "high quality print" (2400 dpi).
The outer drawing shape is ok. The thin horizontal lines are twice as thick than before.
I know, it is about details. But those details make the difference between a professional and an amateur performance.
Do you have another idea, how to improve the pdf quality?

Really BAD 3D Performance on Intel iMac

Hello all,
I have like 2 weeks with a new Intel iMac 20" (C2D 2.4Ghz / 256MB ATI Card / 1Gb RAM) had no problems so far, until today. I decided to install Vista thru Boot Camp (I know I should have installed XP, but Vista is all I got) for games, so I downloaded a few demos to check if it was any good with 3D gaming, installed GRAW2 and NFS Most Wanted, these are not cutting edge games and I tought they should run perfectly smooth as my iMac is superior than recomended specs for those games, well they didnt run well, not even playable at even low resolutions (640*400 / 800*600) the games looked all jerky and slow, really painfull performace, I tought, well, maybe the drivers didnt installed correcly, reinstalled drivers, nothing, erased and reinstalled Vista and drivers, still same problem, even tried games under OS X, HALO Universal and DOOM 3 Demo, again not cutting edge games, they run really bad even on low settings, and I mean painfully slow, so this is not only on Windows.
This is not acceptable for a computer with these specs, even my 2 year old PC (AMD Athlon 3400+ / 1Gig RAM) with Vista and integrated graphics runs DOOM3 and F.E.A.R. at playable levels on medium quality settings @ 1024*800, its not even fair.
My Mac OS version is 10.5.2 and all current updates have been installed, the problem seems to be only with 3D graphics in both Windows and OS X as it plays Quicktime 960p HD videos and all other graphic media as smooth as butter on a hot pan. Does someone else has this issue or knows what to do to solve it?... It is really frustrating.

You probably did not install the drivers for the video hardware (on the Windows side).

Did you not have a Time Machine backup of your Macbook Pro or a clone backup on an external HD?
To copy music from the iPhone to your Mac -- except purchases from the Apple Store -- you need third-party software.

Mail handles .Mac really badly-what's up?

Since I put my .Mac email account into my Mail application, it has worked really badly and I am considering just deleting off the .Mac account and not using it anymore as it is so annoying. Essentially, having the .Mac account in Mail slows everything else (my other email accounts) down to a ridiculous level. When I check "All", and sometimes when I send even one email, the Activity Viewer shows me that Mail is struggling to open .Mac mailboxes and stuff like that, and while it is struggling to do various things with .Mac, including synchronizing, the other email accounts are held up in the queue (ho hum... very boring). To prevent this, I went into the .Mac account and unchecked the "Include when automatically checking for new mail", but this has no effect whatsoever, probably because I usually check for new mail manually anyway.
I have two Macs at present, an older G4 flat panel iMac (1.25 Ghz), and a brand new dual core intel MacBook (2Ghz) and the problem is exactly the same on both Macs. Anyone having similar problems or knows a fix to this? Would love to hear!

Odd thing is that I only have one saved message in the .Mac account, and that is a tiny weeny one (about 10K) with no attachments or anything! By the way, since I have just been going through everything all over again, I notice that what really seems to be holding things up (I've now changed synchronization to "manual" on both computers) is when I "Get Mail" and Mail is trying to open the .Mac mailbox - this goes on interminably (as I can see in Activity Viewer).

My suggestion:
1) Always using MAC AIR with the power plug in.
2)Don' let the power level of battory fall under 30% percentage.
3)If the MAC can't be recharged now, just let it be with power plugged, WAIT...

i bought some songs yesterday that i really liked but when i was listening the sound quality was really bad. it just ruined the song almost. i am not sure what to do about it.

You might try listening to the songs from other devices or systems to make sure it doesn't have to do with your computer specifically.
Also try to preview the songs from your computer and any other devices if possible to see if the preview sounds any different.
If you're still having issues you should contact iTunes support:

Once you get there, choose Music Purchases from the list, then choose Music Purchases again, and it will let you Email them directly about the issue.
Give them the names of the songs you bought and as detailed a description of the audio issue as possible.

Bad performance quadro 4800 and premiere pro

Could someone please help me understand if somethings wrong with my settings or if my 4800 is defected?
I run OSX Lion 10.7.2 and have the quadro fx 4800 installed in a:
Mac Pro 4,1
2 x 2.93Ghz Quad-core Intel Xeon
12GB of Ram
with two additional Geforce GT 120 installed too.
the latest drivers for the 4800
GPU driver version: 7.12.9 270.05.10f03
CUDA driver version: 4.0.50
I run Premiere 5.5.2 and have tested the performance with the two different settings:
Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration
Mercury Playback Engine Software Only
I did this test because I didn’t feel my 4800 did the work I’ve read everywhere it should. Adding simple text titles to AVCHD footage made my playback drop frames.
Anyhow, I tested my machine with 1920x1080 AVCHD and added video layers until I started to see stutter during playback. First with “Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration”. With 14 video layers sized down so you could see them all beside one another playback started to drop frames. The yellow line was still yellow in the top of the timeline. Shouldn’t it turn red if the footage needs rendering?
I then switched to “Mercury Playback Engine Software Only” and the yellow line turned red. The strange thing is that when I played back the same 14 layers of video the dropped frames where gone!! Isn’t this beyond strange??? Shouldn’t everything run more smooth with the “Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration”?
Has it got anything to do with my Geforce GT 120 installed? Should I get rid of those? My two 24 inch apple displays are both connected to the 4800.

After testing final cut (which I love) and Premiere back and forth with the exact same media I notice that editing prores in Final cut is the best when it comes to just edit the film. Sure Premiere does take native MTS files but what good is this when it doesn't run fluidly? Comparing playback and editing with prores in Final Cut and Premiere makes me realize that on my computer, don't ask me why, a rendered sequence with prores material in Premiere is far more jerky than a sequence with prores that "do not need render" in Final cut. Shouldn't they be the same?? Movements like camera pans that originally were shot really smoothly isn't as smooth as they should be playing back in premiere (and yes I know I got the right sequence settings and all). Final cut however gives me what I want.
To me it all comes down to how good the editing App presents what you currently are editing. Adobe has many advantages with the dynamic link and so on but playback is a such an important part of editing!! Has anyone got the same problem with "not as smooth playback as you would really want" even though the sequence is rendered displaying a green line??
