Really confused on how to record vocals over music, how can I?

Hello. I currently have the adobe audition trial it just says Adobe CC. First off I know this isn't part of my question but is CC good enough or should I look into another verision: I am trying to make songs.
I upgraded from audacity and am confused on the simplest thing. In audacity I was able to record through my mic and while recording listen to my music in the back, with my headphones and record like that. In Adobe Audition it seems I cannot record unless my input and output are my mic, which confuses me too ( im a begginer), The only way I can record is if my mic is my input and out put so I can't hear anything I record or any music I put on there.
I can hear the music if I switch my output to my headphones but then I can't record.. I am just so confused I just want to be able to listen to the music through my headphones and record with my mic but I can't record unless my output is my mic. One thing I read was to try with multitrack, but when I open a multitrack session the recording symbol fades and I cannot click it to record.

To expand a bit on what Steve says...
Yes, Audition is completely up to what you want to do and, because it's professional software, a ton more.  The trouble is, this makes the learning curve much steeper than simple (but far more limiting) programmes.  Just to give an example, on my own set up I can record 32 simultaneous sources (in multitrack) and set up multiple different feeds to monitor.  With this versatility comes complexity though and I strongly suggest you spend a few hours with some of they tutorial videos available by searching.
To give you a quick overview of what you need to do to get started:
Go to File/New/Multitrack Session, set it up for the bit depth and sample rate you want, stereo or mono (likely stereo) and all that sort of thing, then give it a name.
Go to Edit/Preferences/Audio Hardware and tell Auditon to use your mic as the default input (you may need to go to your Windows Audio control and set it up there if you mic doesn't show up on the Audition list).  Then set up the default output to be your computer speakers or headphone output.
On the multitrack screen, pick the track you want to record into (I'll assume you already have a music track that you've opened in a track) and make sure the input source is your mic--input is that box with the right-facing arrow in the area to the left of each track.
Click on the red "R" at the left end of the track to enable recording--just in the track(s) you want to record to, not the ones with existing material).  If you want to hear your voice via the computer, click the small "I" next to the "R".  This routes your input back to the output but, as Steve says, your computer might introduce latency.
At that point clicking on the red record button in the main transport controls should start you recording with playback going to your computer output.
Now, that's the basics but you have a ton of options (and a ton of shortcut keys if you choose to learn them).  Why so complex for a single track?  Simply, if you have the external gear to record multiple tracks at once then you need to be able to tell Audition which source to put in which track.  Once you get going, you can create a "session template" if you want to use the same set up every time.
So...give that a try but I strongly suggest you watch some tutorials for more detail--and I'll second Steve's comment that, whatever DAW you eventually decide on, a priority purchase should be an external sound interface to bypass the one built into your computer.

  • The TOC is very confusing. How can I see the page showing the list of chapters and accompanying pages?

    The TOC is very confusing. How can I see the whole list of all the chapters, as it would appear in a book? I only can see a vague image of the chapter title, and only from one chapter at a time; the chapter I am on. In the instruction example it shows also only the "title" of the chapter it pertains to, but it is all in legeable text. The inspector gives options, but it does not explain how to apply it, and I cannot see what my option will look like and to what part of the "text" it is referring.

    The "lower rectangles" are thumbnails of the actual pages in your book... the text was presumably the content of your book. IF you did as I suggested to keep the TOC listing of a full book.. but removed content on all except the three chapters you want to send off to XXXXX -  then the "rectangles are showing blank pages. Which is normal.
    You need to understand that Apple created iBooks Author to create a book which can be obtained from their iBooks store. The application is flexible for customisation to a large extent and the innovative make use of that flexibility. The TOC basically replaces the old Index in printed books to advise readers what content is available.
    On an iPad, or Mac now, Insterad of using  "hyperlinks" from a written index page... which is basic web page navigation - Apple chose  to have a visual TOC.
    Basically you  have to decide - create a three chapter sample which you seem to require - which will show the TOC as it is, or  if you the whole TOC of the finished book is required to show... but  not the content, you end  up with blank "rectangles".
    Screenshots oniPads... press the  top right start button and the  lower centre,  home buttom together and it  makes a screenshot. Transfer to your computer ( email or Dropbox type cloud) and  add to your post.

  • *Really confused* on how to install Vista 64 using BC

    OK, so I'm now proud owner of a "Harpertown" model Mac Pro Quad Core 2.8, and I want to install Windows Vista Ultimate x64 on it. I have read that you can definitiely install this Windows OS on this model of Mac.
    I have three components here – I've installed and upgraded to 10.5.3, and I have a copy of Boot Camp Assistant 2.0 in my Utilities folder. I just picked up a Vista Ultimate x64 full install disc (don't have the x32 disc). And now I'm downloading Boot Camp Update 2.1 for Windows Vista 64.
    The thing is, I remember reading that I needed the 2.1 update to have the right drivers to install x64. But the 2.1 update is an exe file, meaning I need to have Windows installed already to use it.
    Now I'm really confused – can somebody explain to me (or point me to a web page that does this) how to install an x64 version of Vista using Boot Camp? Do I need anything else other than BC Assistant 2.0, BC Update 2.1 for Windows Vista 64, and the Vista x64 full-install disc?
    Thanks in advance,
    Peter

    Hey, it worked!
    I was worried that the installation wouldn't work unless I had the correct drivers in place before I even started, but I guess that wasn't the case.
    For anybody who runs across this message in a future search, I recommend the the Boot Camp Installation pdf, which cleared up a lot of confusion for me:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/BootCampInstall-Setup.pdf
    What I hadn't realized is that what's on the Mac side is Boot Camp Assistant and that Boot Camp proper is a Windows program. The Boot Camp 2.1 Update would be run after installing Boot Camp from the Leopard CD ("Step 3" in the above manual).
    I really like Vista, BTW – its the first Windows OS where I actually like the look and feel of it ("look" and "feel" being one reason I generally stick with Mac OS), so thanks to Hatter for recommending it. Still sticking with Mac OS as my mainstay, but its really nice to have both.

  • Recording singing over music

    I have written/composed a musical on Sibelius and am going to record the musical accompaniment on Wiretap Studio, unless someone has a better suggestion. Wiretap has lossless reproduction and is easy to use. I need to record two voice parts (tenor and bass) to accompany two live voices (melody and alto) along with recorded instrumentation. What is the best software with which to add two voice tracks to the instrumental score? Using a MacBook Pro and OS 10.7.4. Have Garageband installed...Quicktime Player...software that comes with the computer. What is the best program for layering two layers of voices over recorded instrumental music? We're going to perform this in some large venues in California and other places, so this has to be good quality.

    To "rip" audio from a CD:
    Pop the CD in your drive
    In Edit view go to File > Extract Audio from CD
    In the Extract audio dialog you will be able to preview the tracks, select the ones you want, and copy them into Audition.
    You should then save these wave files in a separate folder created just for your project.
    Once you have all the audio files saved and open in Audition, switch to multi-track view and use the file panel to drag and drop the songs in the order you want.  If you put all the wave blocks on a single track you can have them "Crossfade" by sliding one on top of the other.  Give it a try to get used to how it works.  You can change the crossfade by grabbing and scrubbing up and down on the grey Crossfade markers in the upper corner of each track.
    What soundcard are you using?  While you are playing with crossfades in multi-track view, hit the play button and see if you can hear the audio.  If not, check that your audio is not muted (a little speaker with a red x through in the bottom-right corner of the windows taskbar, if you are using the built in sound card).  When you are recording can you see the waveform?

  • After updating to the ios7, I'm not receiving messages from phones other than iPhones or I'll get them really late. How can I fix this?!

    I receive messages from iPhones normally. But when I try to text people who have regular Android phones, I either get their messages really late or I don't get them at all. It makes talking to my friends extremely hard and I need help trying to fix it. At first, I thought it was the service of the college I just moved to until I realized my messaging worked fine here until I updated my phone to the iOS7. Somebody help me please! I have an iPhone 4S!

    Deactivate then reactivate iMessage on your phone.

  • IOS 5, the Coverflow is really laggy. How can I fix that?

    Exactly that happened to me after I updated to iOS 5. I picked up another iPhone 4 (iOS 4) from a relative and compared it to mine (iOS 5) and the difference is really noticeable. Coverflow laggs hard !! And I also experienced that I have to touch the fast-forward button really precisely to actually make it fast forward. Consequently the iPhone and/or Apple lost their perfection to me.
    Does anyone else have the similar experience?
    APPLE, fix it fast please.

    I've got the exact same problem with a 3GS on iOS5, everything is so fast except that...

  • Sometimes when I type in Pages, words get crossed out in a weird glitch. It's really annoying. How can I get rid of this?

    This is an example of what happens, usually after the text reaches the end of the column and goes to the next line. I was also using bullets when I was typing this.

    I suggest using something like OnyX to clear font caches. I had a problem just the other day with weird blue invisibles boxes in all of my Pages documents. I tried manually deleting them but it didn't work until I used OnyX.

  • How to record vocals?

    I'm a therapist and I would love to be able to record relaxation CDs for clients... you know with vocals, and possible putting the vocals over music. But I have NO IDEA where to begin.

    Hi Angela,
    For no bucks, you can use the built-in mic on your eMac and record voices from within GarageBand (as well as iMovie). I'm not sure which model of eMac you have, but you may also have an app called SoundStudio which works nicely to "fix and polish" your audio.
    For a few bucks, you can purchase a standalone mic that plugs into your 1/8" audio-in port for improved sound quality. Likewise, QT7 Pro has voice recording/editing ability.
    Of course, there are options for mucho bucks, but that should get you started in the right direction
    Cheers.

  • Recording vocals

    I have an:
    -8800 shure stage mic.
    -M-Audio Ozone.
    -DX4 Audiophile studio monitors.
    -G4 mini mac (256 RAM).
    Does anyone have tips on how I should set up to record vocals over Garageband music tracks I've made?

    you might run into some problems with the RAM, 256 might not really be enough to run garage band quickly and without bugs with alot of real music tracks. However, with regards recording technique, set up the M-audio with he mic plugged in, and then get a pair of headphones. I dont know if your M-audio has a built in monitor or not, so plug the head phones in either through the M-audio or right into the back of the mini. Press record and lay down the vocals to the playback from the already created music tracks.

  • Is it possible to record vocals in Logic Pro 9?

    I just bought Logic Pro 9 to create music, but I was wondering if it's possible to record vocals over the music. If it is possible, how do I do that?

    You've made a good point Miles. A feature they have added in both US and UK versions of cars is a thing called 'pedals'. In the UK it's a little confusing as there are 3 pedals but most people only have 2 feet, but hey!
    In UK the middle 'pedal' functions as a slow-downer and the far right pedal functions as a speed-uperer. There are no short cuts to these features. In the US most cars have 2 'pedals' and most people have 2 feet, way more logical. In this case you'd want to press the left with your foot to slow you down.
    I have heard that your car can go up hills but you have to configure the 'engine' properly. Once configured and the 'engine' is on, a whole new range of motoring possibilities will open up to you. The speed-uperer pedal has no effect unless the 'engine' is configured and working properly. Stumped me for ages.
    Hope this helps you stick with 'car' a bit longer. Although 'boat' has it's attraction, jumping to a different platform is not always the answer.

  • Recording vocals seperate from main music Mac

    I do most of my music on a Mac Pro, running Logic Studio 9, but the location of the computer really isn't a suitable space for recording vocals in.
    I can't keep lugging the Mac Pro about, so ideally I'd like to record the vocals in a suitable (different) space on to a laptop, then import the resulting audio files to the main project on my Mac Pro.
    The idea is that I'd do a stereo reference mix of the music in Logic Pro, bounce it and copy that audio file to a project on the laptop (using Garageband or Logic Express to save cost).
    With that project set up at the same tempo and sampling rate, I'd then record the vocals using the laptop. From there I'd copy the vocal audio file(s) and drop them into the music project on the Mac Pro, where I'd add any effects, processing and do the final mix.
    First question - would this work? As long as I recorded the vocals in a project set to the same tempo and sampling rate as the music, would I have any timing or sync problems when adding the vocal audio files to the original music project?
    Second question - if so, can anyone recommend any portable, Firewire 800 audio interfaces which would be suitable for recording the vocals on to the laptop? It would ony need to be 2 input channels maximum, but with at least one XLR input and phantom power.
    Any advice gratefully received!

    but the location of the computer really isn't a suitable space for recording vocals in.
    Is there any other room that would work better at your location? If so, consider buying a snake.
    The idea is that I'd do a stereo reference mix of the music in Logic Pro, bounce it and copy that audio file to a project on the laptop (using Garageband or Logic Express to save cost).
    Or reinstall Logic Pro on your laptop, but without all the content. Your license permits this, as you're not using two copies at the same time.
    First question - would this work?
    Yes. I do this often. Just be sure that both files begin at 1 1 1 1. Additionally, as I usually have many takes tracking o'dubs, I always record to WAV (BWF) files so I can use the 'move to original record position' command to align less than complete audio files.
    Second question - if so, can anyone recommend any portable, Firewire 800 audio interfaces
    Most FW interfaces are FW400. Just get an [adapter.|http://www.sonnettech.com/product/fw_adapter.html] and buy an interface which can be separately powered. There are dozens of suitable FW interfaces: one inexpensive box which I like is the [AudioFire4|http://www.echoaudio.com/Products/FireWire/AudioFire4/index.php] which is 6in/6out - they make an Audiofire2 but that doesn't have XLRs. Apogee, Focusrite, Presonus etc. all have small interfaces which you might like - just [search around|http://www.sweetwater.com/c683--FireWireAudioInterfaces/low2high]. Personally, I would avoid M-Audio.
    Good luck.

  • Confused about how to use paint()

    Hi, I have been working really hard to try to get the following program to work but I am really confused on how to use paint(). I do not have anyone to ask so I thought this forum could help. Anyways, here is my problem...
    I am trying to recursively figure out the Sierpinski fractal. I cannot figure out if my math works or not because I do not know how to call the paint() recursively to draw my triangles.
    Please have a look at the following code. Thank you!
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.awt.geom.*;
    public class DrawTriangle extends Frame {
      Point a = new Point(20,480),
            b = new Point(350,40),
            c = new Point(680,480),
            halfB,
            halfC,
            halfB2,
            halfC2,
            halfC3;
      int width;
      public DrawTriangle() {
        super("Sierpinski Fractal");
        addWindowListener( new WindowAdapter() {
          public void windowClosing( WindowEvent we ) {
            dispose();
            System.exit( 0 );
        setBackground( Color.white );
        setSize(700, 500);
        setVisible(true);
      public void paint(Graphics g, Point a, Point b, Point c) {
        width = c.x - a.x;
        if (width < 6){return;}
        g.setColor( Color.GREEN );
        g.drawPolygon( new int[] { a.x, b.x, c.x }, new int[] { a.y, b.y, c.y }, 3 );
        halfC.x = c.x/2;
        halfC.y = c.y;
        halfB.y = b.y/2;
        halfB.x = b.x;
        halfB2.y = halfB.y + a.y;
        halfB2.x = a.x;
        halfC2.x = halfC.x + a.x;
        halfC2.y = a.y;
        halfC3.x = halfC.x/2 + a.x;
        halfC3.y = halfB2.y;
        paint(g, a, halfC, halfB);
        paint(g, halfC3, halfC, halfB);
        paint(g, halfC2, halfC, halfB);
      public static void main(String[] args) {
         new DrawTriangle();

    thanks jsalonen, your tip let me start working on the math to correct it.
    I have a new problem now. My math is correct but I am having problems with the recursion. I can draw only the top , left , or right triangles. I cannot get them all to work together. See code and comments below.
    Any ideas why I cant call all three of the paint()s toegther and have them work?
