Really easy question from the technologically ignorant

Hello hello... I'm new to macs and I'm trying to work out how to share files and applications and suchlike from my account to my girlfriend's (on the same computer). For example, it'd be nice if when I put a CD on i-Tunes it automatically went into her library as well - also, when I install programmes on my account, we can't seem to access them from hers. I'm sure this is hopelessly easy to do, but there's only so much experimenting I can do before I worry I'm going to break something...
Cheers all...
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4)

iTunes has a sharing preference. There's no need to download music to both users Music folder. The /Users/Shared folder is set up so that all users can put files in this location and let other login users "see" them. Changing the content of a file in the Shared folder involves modifying the permissions on the file. This can be done in the Get Info window (you will find a sub-menu in the Finder's File menu). Select the file that you wish to change the permissions on, select the Get Info sub-menu and change the permissions so Others can read & write.

  • Easy question for the MODS

Unlike more difficult questions like CRC problems, ps problems, etc, this is rather an easy question.
The KT4V manual (page 3-8) lists the onboard NIC as a "boot device" option.  This "feature" is available in Bios 1.1, 1.2 but not available in Bios 1.4 and later.
Any reason why this feature was mutilated and not available anymore in the later bioses?
Are there two different bioses for KT4V and KT4V-L?  If yes where can one find the bios for KT4V-L?
I know this feature is not very popular with the majority of users, and I'm not trying to bust anyone's balls for removing un-popular features, but the "boot from NIC"  was one of the features/reasons why I got this mb, and I would rather use a much newer bios than 1.2 (for known reasons).
Also, while on this topic, boot-from-usb (especially thumb drives) feature would also be greatly appreciated - I think it is also listed in the manual.
    TIA

    Hi,
    Quote
Please suggest him to update the BIOS Ver1.9 which can support Boot from LAN and boot from USB devices.
AMI BIOS can boot from the devices which support BIOS Boot specifications (BBS, you can refer to the attached file for the information).
Email me, so I can send you the BIOS PDF.

  • A really easy question...I think.

    Hi everyone,
I have turned the internet inside-out looking for a simple
tutorial on this and so far I think they have all taken me kind of
a long way around. Basically what I want is text/photos/buttons/
    inside the
    box that are
"scrollable" without having to scroll left or right. My Flash
document is 800x533px. I've tried doing the whole ScrollPane thing
going through about 5 tutorials with different methods but it says
I have to do New Symbol/Movie Clip and the so-called "stage" that
you construct the movie on doesn't allow you to change dimentions
as far as I know. I can only change the dimensions of the main
Stage and the ScrollPane. I feel like this is a simple task so any
help would be greatly appreciated. I apologize if this is a stupid
    question. Thanks everyone.

  • Question from the Blog: slideshow music

We had the following question come from the Photoshop.com blog that covers the Gallery changes:
Question: "When I try to create a express slideshow it will let me pick out a  template then I can’t add music or get a timeline or anything else for  that matter !! Have talked with your tech. help people & that got  me no where ..."
Answer: Our slideshow engine did change recently, and the ability to add music, as well as the default slideshow experience, changed. In the case of music, it is not available at the moment (but we realize that it's a really nice feature to have. For the time being, you can create excellent slideshows with music and transitions and effects, using either Photoshop Elements or Premiere Elements, and share those on ps.com).
The default sharing slideshow also changed, from that 3-D floating model to the new Midnight theme. The primary driver for that change was to drastically improve the loading time for the slideshows, and in fact, the slideshows now load in a fraction of the time, and offer a superior viewing experience with real full screen, as opposed to the previously limited large view available in the former model. But we're adding new themes and templates all the time, and we understand the appeal of a deep, interactive experience for sharing slideshows. Again, in the meantime, until new themes come available directly online, you can choose from a variety of very interactive and fun themes if you share photos and video directly from Photoshop Elements or Premiere Elements to Photoshop.com.

  • Two really embarrassing questions from iPod newbie!

Although I've been using Macs since the steam-powered Mac SE, I've never actually owned an iPod (until now), because I never listen to music 'on the go'.
However, I've just ordered an 80Gb Classic from the Apple Store, principally as a handy way to have all the songs I've written or played on in one handy, small location.
However, because I've never owned one before, I have a couple of questions that probably seem +really stoopid+ (red face)...
    1. I guess I will copy all the songs from CD to iTunes on my iMac and then upload them to the iPod. But will I have to keep all those songs in iTunes? If I subseqiently delete them from iTunes, will they be automatically deleted on the iPod the next time I try and copy any songs from iTunes to it?
    2. When I copy the music files to iTunefrom CD, can I copy the music files to an external Firewire HD, not my main hard drive? There are a lot of songs to copy and I don't want to fill a significant chunk of my main hard drive if I don't have to. Would iTunes 'see' them on an external HD? Or can I copy them straight from the CDs to the iPod via iTunes, without physically copying them to an HD at all?
Sorry for the basic questions, I hope someone can help.

    Robin,
You might want to consider a few things before you wipe your iTunes library clean (assuming you have already trasnfered them onto your iPod).
If, for some reason, you need to restore your iPod and put music back on, iTunes will have to transfer that music back to your iPod. If you have wiped your iTunes library clean that could mean spending a lot of time REformatting your music collection to put back on your iPod.
Also, I have had a few instances where, although I have iTunes set to 'manually' manage my transfers, iTunes has deleted all of my music. Thank God I had my library on my hard drive as it only meant a 20 minute sync to transfer 6,000 songs back on.
If hard drive space on your desktop or laptop is limited, iTunes offers a way to 'backup' the library on DVD+R or similar media. So, for about $10 in blank DVD costs, you can just make a portable backup to put in a drawer.
Just PLEASE think about these issues before you put music on your iPod and delete it from your hard drive. From experience, things happen and you don't want to go through the 'ripping' hassle again! (ripping, the term for making mp3/wma/aac files from a CD)
Last, if this is your first attempt at putting your music collection on your computer, you might want to keep them there. You might be surprised at how handy it is to have all of your music in one place close by, especially if you invest in a pretty moderately priced speaker setup for your computer.
    Best of luck!

  • Displaying random questions from the backend

    Hi,
Is it possible to randomly select a question and display it on the page with different options. Say for example, if I have a question and that has three values as answers which are to be displayed in radio button style, will it be possible to display it dynamically by selecting the values from tables?"
The questions and the options are stored in the table.

    Hi Suzi,
Radio buttons can appear vertically or horizontally on a page - to set them horizontally, you need to specify "Number of columns" on the radio item's definition. As you won't know exactly how many items there will be, you can just set this to the highest possible number of options.
When the page is submitted, you should have the question number (created using the random number generator I mentioned before) plus the value of the option selected - this would be the return value for the item rather than the display value, so if the user sees "Yellow", but the return value is "1", then the item is set to 1 not Yellow. How this gets onto the database will depend on how you have set the page up. Most likely, you would just have a simple page process that does something like:
    BEGIN
    INSERT INTO ANSWERS (QUESTION, ANSWER) VALUES (:P1_QUESTION, :P1_ANSWER);
END;This should be conditional on a Submit button

  • Really loud whirring from the Hard Drive on my Macbook pro

The noise is coming from the left under the keyboard, it is where the hard drive is located. It happens when I'm not unsig it and it doesn't sound like the noise of a hard drive about to fail but more like a really loud buzz (whirring). I've checked the speed of the fans which are usual (3500-4000). Also,I began to hear this loud noise after removing the dust from inside the computer.
So, when that noise happen I turn off the macbook pro and I restart it and everything seems to be okay. I would rather fix hat's wrong before the things goes really bad.
Thank you so much for your responses !!!!!

Since we have no idea what you did we have no idea what to tell you
Did you copy "pictures" or did you copy the iPhoto library?
Are you going to run your iPhoto library on the external drive?
What exactly did you do an dhat exactly do you want to do?
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • A really stupid question from newbie...

    hello all,
i am very new to java and i am trying to build a j2ee application...
rite now....i need to let my app communicate w/ an outside program thru' XML..
i had just learnt many thing about java w/ xml and i decided to use the XMLEncoder... it seems quite simple to use...BUT i have no idea on how to send/receive these XML files...i had thought of using socket connection, but i just found out that an EJB wouldn't allow socket networking... i bet this must be quite a stupid question coz i found nowhere teaching me this...=P
if u know about this, pls point me to some relevant docs / sites....i am anxious to learn about it...
    thx so much,
    karloogunna~

    hello maesj, rune, and others,
    thx alot for your advice...
and here's the environment i am working in:
    OS: w2k
    JDK: 1.4.1.01
    j2ee: 1.3.1
    jboss: 3.0.2
i am using flash as my UI, so i need communication
between the j2ee app and flash.
the data transfer involves a number of arrays of
objects (each object w/ a list of attributes...) so, i
think using XML as data-exchange is quite suitable (am
i wrong on this??)I don't know the first thing about Flash, but using XML as a means for exchanging data seams like a good idea, for the scenario you described.
    >
and i am reading about the message-driven beans, i see
that they got a function onMessage() from where i can
get the XML strings (?), but i don't know how i can
feed these strings into this JMS from flash...do i
need to write a small java program on the client
side?I haven't that much experience with Message Driven Beans. What I do know is that they employ the Java Messaging Service (JMS). If you write a small client appplication with JMS support... you might be close.
    >
also, i am not sure if i can send out XML strings
through the message-driven beans, i am reading on the
    JMS...it got the MessageProducer, MessageConsumer,
    MessageListener, and MessageSelector....should i be
using this? or can i use this together with the
    message-driven beans??
In a Messaging system you will need message producers, and message consumers. To enable two-way communication, you can setup both the EJB and the client to handle both. When a message arrives at the consumer (or subscriber if you like), the JMS Service invokes the onMessage method. So you should implement your logic in the onMessage method, for example inspect the XML content, and act upon its content.
i am very sorry for my disorganized questions...(i
used to do low-level programming =P)
and really thank you for your advice!!!!
No problem, the amount of information to read can be quite overwhelming. Using JMS is just a suggestion, and might be considered overkill for your application. If you're using an IDE, like Sun ONE, creating a message driven bean is easy, and can be tried out, without too much hours passing.
    Kind Regards,
    Rune Bjrnstad.

  • Question from a Mac-ignorant Boyfriend...

Thank you in advance if you bother to read this and provide any advice...
So, I have never owned a Mac and have used them on an extremely limited basis, thus my ignorance. My girlfriend, however, has expressed interest in Mac's in the recent past. Her birthday is coming up and she just graduated from college, so I'm thinking about getting a Macbook or Macbook Pro as a gift. The reason for this is that she has an ancient IBM laptop right now that has given her some trouble. She's starting a grad program and will be earning her PhD over the next 5 years, so I figure she needs a reliable laptop.
Now, I know Mac's are media-intensive computers...she won't need to be doing any video editing or gaming and very limited photo editing. She'll mostly be doing word-processing, presentations, and internet. I realize a PC can do this just as well at a fraction of the cost, but dammit if those Mac's don't look freakin' awesome both in presentation and performance.
So...I'd like to know if anyone has an opinion on the Macbook vs. the Pro. The Macbook seems the obvious choice since my g/f won't need all the extra processing and graphics card of the Pro...but I do not like the glossy display a whole lot and I'm also not a fan of the white plastic casing. Nitpicky, I know. Can anyone give me additional reasons for getting the Pro? I'm basically looking for either an enabler or someone to kick me in the ba**s and prevent me from throwing money away.
Any and all opinions are more than welcome. Thanks in advance!!!

    John,
You might be overlooking what is possibly the most powerful factor in all this...
You mention that you have fallen in love with the physical design of these Mac portables, but have you actually used one yourself for any length of time, and to do anything of substance?
Once you purchase one, regardless of which one, and both you and your girlfriend use it a bit, you will have truly experienced what it means to have and use a Mac. Put simply, you're going to fall in love with the way it works. Most of all, you will want one for yourself.
What will you do then? How will this possibility figure into your decision regarding your first purchase? I recommend that you take this into consideration.
Nevertheless, I also think that you should find out which one she would prefer to have. Perhaps she would prefer a Macbook, in which case the problem is solved for you. If so, and if you do decide at some later time to get one yourself, you could go with the Macbook Pro. Between the two of you, you would then have one of each, and either one of you could use the machine that is most appropriate at any given time.
Speaking from my own point of view, my wife currently has a G4 iBook that she uses much as you report your girlfriend will use hers: internet, word processing, email, etc. I am the one in my family that does all of the "heavy lifting" such as video editing, etc. It's not that her machine can't do it, but that mine can do it much faster (17" Macbook Pro).
This last may be important for you; that her much less powerful, and aging, machine can do almost anything that mine can do, just not as fast. Applied to your situation, this should indicate that the Macbook will be robustly "future-proof" for quite some time, even if not as long as a Macbook Pro. I really don't think you should consider this as a deal breaker.
However I will say that my wife, if asked about the Macbook, would claim a preference for the Macbook Pro. Not because the Macbook wouldn't work well enough to suit her needs, but becasue she prefers a bit larger display. On this score, much will depend on your girlfriend's preference in this regard. Make sure she will be happy with the smaller display! If so, there should be no barrier to getting her the Macbook.

  • A really basic question from a medic who has no place on this forum!

    Hi
I am writing to beg your indulgence as to my lack of knowledge and to ask for help with what I think is a simple problem, but I am sure has a complicated solution!
I have created a self contained flash program on prescribing to help doctors improve their skills and to make less errors.
I did this in powepoint and used a program call PPT to flash by wondershare to create the flash programme.
Now that the restriction has been eased, I would love to convert this programme to an iphone / ipad app, as well as for other portable pay mediums.
Is it possible to do this with what I have created? What I mean is, would I need to create and code from scratch to then package as an iphone app, or can it be ripped from what I have already created?
If this is possible, what software do I need to purchase to do this?
thanks so much for all your help
    Morris

Since no one has answered you, I thought I would chime in in case any of it is useful. I am not 100% certain of what I say here, but it's probably the case.
I have not used any PPT to SWF software like you mention and am not familiar with it.  But from my knowledge, if it is published to a FlashPlayer 10.x SWF (which I doubt - because many of these swf decompiler programs use older Flashplayer versions) then yes, in theory you should be able to do it.
If that is the case you would need:
    1) an Apple iPhone Developer's account that you buy and get accepted for
    2) Flash CS5
    3) iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad as a testing device
    4) iTunes synced to your device
and then you could run the Packager with the appropriate DRM signing (from your Apple Dev acct) and turn the SWF into an IPA. Then you use iTunes to sync the app to the device and install it.
That all being said, if your original app was done in something (forgive me for saying this) as clunky as Powerpoint (it's not exactly a great rich interactive development tool) then it could easily be redone natively in Flash itself - coding it in ActionScript 3 and then create a SWF itself and then export that to the iOS devices.  That way you have one less translation occuring. It seems like you are asking for trouble to convert PPT to SWF and then to IPA, and I would guess depending on what you've done, either easy enough to do natively in flash, or possibly even if the double-porting you suggest *does* work then it is unlikely Apple would approve it for the app store if it doesn't meet the new app approval criteria.
You probably need to find a local Flash developer to help you with this.
    Hope that helps

  • Another STUPID question from the Hoss; Firmware updating , Yes or No?

I've gotten conflicting input from persons whom I consider to be far more Knowledgeable in their Geekness than am I.
Let me lead off by saying that they are ALL very long-term Mac-ers, these are the people who convinced me to dive into Lake Cuppertino!
One "faction" advises to NOT install the firmware updates, that they are a risky proposition, that the computer is best off with the firmware installed with it's build.
The other group says that Apple wouldn't encourage us to update the firmeware if it wasn't safe and good and generally wholesome for our computers.
My experience with this thus far; The ONE time I did be all brave and studly and do the firmware update, it froze my computer so badly that I ended up having to make the 90-minute,(one way), journey to the Apple store and hand it over to the resident Genius.
Fortunately, it was the 15 minute fix, as opposed to the alternate possibility, which requires, apparently, 3 days.
So I was left with the feeling that the nay-sayers are indeed correct.
And I have some trepidation in risking it again, because I REALLY REALLY need my 'puter working, don't have so much time for driving a majillion miles to get, either a 15 minute, or a,(possibly), 3 days fix.
What can you folks tell me about this?
Does a significant interval between the inception firmware and the update you finally decide to install exacerbate the risky-ness of doing it?
Is there a point where you absolutely MUST update the firmware?
What causes the brick-ness after the install?
I am certain that there are MANY differing opinions and experiences.
I will appreciate any responses that may help to make this all clearer to me!
    THANKS, And CHEERS!

More than likely because they got bit when doing one or are paranoid from reading these "emergency room" episodes. That's the beauty of having multiple, bootable clones. You can do the updates on one and test to see if there are any pitfalls. This is my standard advice before updating/upgrading/installing new stuff.
Get a bootable, external HD (preferably FireWire, since it's 40-50% faster than USB 2 and designed for data transfers), make a bootable backup/clone before updating/upgrading, and ensure that it's bootable and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall or reset anything. See these for details:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106941
    http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/installswupdates.html
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/backuprecovery.html
If you only have a Time Machine backup, ensure that you can reliably restore it to another disk/volume/partition before updating/upgrading.

  • Question from the After Effects team about audio output

When you render and export a composition from After Effects that does not have audio content, do you ever enable audio output intentionally (thus creating an empty audio track in the output file)?
If so, why, and what formats do you use?
We're in the process of making some improvements to how audio is handled, and we want to make sure that we haven't broken any common workflows.
(Note: If you're not sure about how to enable audio output, see this page: "FAQ: Why is there no sound (audio) in my output file?" )

For me, I can't think of a common use-case where that would be necessary. I suppose there are times when you want a file to conform to an existing structure, such as when you want to replace media in Premiere, and the new file needs to have the same number of audio tracks as the old file (which you may not have created). Even though that hardly ever happens (I remember replacing proxies when CS3 got the ability to import P2 footage... it was... not very cooperative), I wouldn't want to lose the ability to arbitrarily export an empty audio track, because I'm sure there are other edge cases which I can't think of. But, I wouldn't mind losing it as a default behavior.
It sounds like what you're hinting at is a feature where the render module detects whether there is any audio in the comp before committing to some kind of default audio track export setting. If there is no audio in the comp (or if all the audio in a comp is disabled), it wouldn't export an audio track.
As long as there is a setting to override this behavior (i.e.: enabled / if detected / disabled) that can be built into an export preset, I'd love such a feature.
I, too, often forget to turn on audio export, because most of my comps don't use audio (I sync audio in Premiere, usually) and I don't like having empty audio tracks I don't need. But in the rare cases I do need audio, it's really annoying to go back and re-export the audio because I forgot to turn it on (similar to forgetting to enable an alpha channel, which makes me feel really stupid).

can it only work with applets? No, all Java software can use cryptography.
can it work with stand alone applications and JSP pages??? Yes, all Java software can use cryptography. (Actually it's easier to make it work with stand-alone apps and JSP pages; applets have problems with download size and browser security restrictions).

  • Keyword questions from the newbie

Would anyone mind helping me figure out if there are conventions for entering Keywords into pdf Metadata? I have been having a conversation on another forum about Keywords for images and there is some question in my mind as to whether I should use quotes around a term such as "plate of shrimp" or if I should just use Plate Shrimp. One poster said they were avoiding using spaces for some reason and that they use PlateShrimp.
Anyway, am I correct in assuming that all this goes back to how google searches Metadata in pdf's and/or images??
Does anyone know where to find some of the conventions or standards associated with this? For instance, doesn't google search the /content/ of the pdf and if so wouldn't a keyword have to be /different/ from one in the METADATA? Or ostensibly google would rank a keyword /higher/ and the other Maetadata in a pdf would be associated with Contact and/or Copyright info?
I am a total newbie with this so I am trying to winnow things down here with a little help if possible. I've been able to find info on IPTC Metadata but my assumption is that this only relates to images.
    Thanks.

This happens because you move the macbook and the disk is spinning. If you don't tilt it this usually is OK but tilting causes the noises your hearing and it is damaging the disk.

It is the input menu for special characters and keyboard viewer if both are turned on under system preferences. Look under International Input Menu.

Yes I use it and it works fine. Max out your RAM for the best results.
