Really? No Sound Capture in OSX?
Purchased my first Mac about 5 months ago and so far have been more frustrated, than happy. It's hard to believe there is no preloaded basic sound capture program in OSX. I just want to record a simple voice narration.
Just start Quicktime Player. On the menubar select "file" then in the dropdown select "new audio recording".
I'm running Tiger but that feature is only available to "Pro" users, not part of the basic version. Did they change that?

Problem with sound capture on a Packard Bell
Hello, recently I have acquired a Packard Bell EASYNOTE MX61-B-054PT notebook to replace my dead Asus. Everything is working quite well except for sound capture from the microphone.
There is a periodic noise that I can't get rid of (the noise I'm talking about isn't the normal background white noise). In the image you can see in the middle when I made some sound and to the left and to the right just silence (with the typical noise) and the samples that go to zero periodically.
I have tried adjusting buffer time and buffer size in asound.conf, I've tried adjusting the pci latency for the soundcard but nothing worked.
To make the the plugging and unplugging of headphones work properly I needed to add "options snd_hda_intel model=lenovo" to modprobe.conf although the same problem happens if I don't have any options.
Help please, I'd like to make this work properly so I can make calls.
Below is everything that might help anyone help me find out whats wrong.

From looking though your other posts, I see that you have been having some other general sound issues. It may be that you need to install some of the other utility software from the support page for your notebook. There are some utilitys/software that is for the configuation of some of the keyboard keys. Really Choppy Sound in Windows 7
?Hi guys, i want to share my problem and seek a possible fix. So thats my problem: I get really CHOPPY sound in games, outside everything is fine, everything is OK, but in-game its like listening to a vynil played a thousand times. My rig is the following: Win7 x64, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 9800GT GPU, XtremeMusic installed on my PCI slot, latest Creative drivers (drivers only, nothing else). The problem happens in games that are not EAX compatible: Battlefield Bad Company 2, Left 4 Dead 2. Put in simple: it happens randomly, it affects all games. Sometimes i get it fixed in L4D2 by changing the output a couple of times (i.e 2>5.>7.>2) but most of the times i have to exit the game and pray to start clean. I tried daniel_k drivers but with them i randomly loose the whole sound output and i have to change through the Working modes to get it back. If anything in summary: i regret purchasing this piece of **bleep**. But still i'll welcome any help to fix my issues.
Re: Choppy sound in Windows 7 on Sound Blaster Audigy SEk What I meant was when you uninstall your graphics driver and use standart VGA drivers then the sound turns to normal without any crackling/popping. But of course you wouldnt want to do that or else you wouldnt have graphics accerelation. (You can't play video games and even watch any kind of video)
For instance you freshly setup windows, dont install any nvidia/ati drivers, just with the big screen, install the creative drivers u wont have any problem with your sound.
That's why I said that there's a kind of confliction between graphics interface and creative drivers. Because when u install any kind of display driver, crackling sound starts again.
There's no solution for this except updated SB drivers. And that's why people get mad to creative on this forum. (Not only on this forum of course, it's a worldwide madness) -
Hi!
I am trying to make guitar effect with JMF but I found that there is a big lag between the input and the playback.
If I try to playback the input directly with windows, there is no lag. But when I playback the input with a simple JMF appliation (CaptureDevice->Player), even without effect, there is a 3-4 second lag and sometime, the output is REALLY noisy...
I have a sound blaster live, java 1.4.2, winXP...
Is this a limitation of JMF?
Manuel DarveauHmmm, yes that is a very good question. in fact:
Using a TargetDataLine and record the stream to a file gives good qualiy on the file! Open a file ! and then play the stream to a SourceDataLine gives good quality.,,,,,BUT open a TargetDataLine and a SourceDataLine at the sametime for the same stream gives really bad sound quality. I have done some deeep digging in this subject but have not find any solution to the problem. I'v tried a couple variants via JNI. I skipped the TargetDataLine and the SourceDataLine and used a JNI
solution instead- gave same bad sound quality. The latency is due to witch buffersize one use and the buffersize at the output I have a PC and I heard that PC is a very noisy invoriment for audio.....hhmmm -
I recently installed arch after my old slackware setup began to break down, but I can't seem to get sound capture to work properly. I'm not sure exactly where it fails, but I have a couple of ideas.
I have a SB Live! Platinum 5.1, with a LiveDrive, and want to be able to record through the RCA-connectors on the front panel. This worked just fine on my previous setup if the following commands were issued at boot time
amixer sset "Line2 LiveDrive",1 Capture nocapture
amixer sset "Line2 LiveDrive",1 Capture toggle
amixer sset "Line2 LiveDrive",1 Capture 100%
Sadly I don't remember what version of Alsa I was using then. If anyone knows how I can tell, I still have the system on HDD, I'd appreciate it.
Sound output works fine, and capture via the rear connector "works", ie if the AC97 Capture channel is cranked up and capture enabled on the Mix and Capture channels in alsamixer I can record a horribly distorted version of the sound fed into the soundcard. Capturing the Wave channel directly also works fine. But alas, all attempts at capturing from Line2 has failed.
My analysis comes down to these suggestions to what's wrong:
1. Some switch has to be flipped to select Line2 as the input I'm trying to record from. In the official mixer for Windows there is such a switch. This would imply that some changes have been made to Alsa, since I didn't have to do that earlier. At least I can't find any trace of such a thing in my old boot scripts.
2. The LiveDrive is disabled. Since the LiveDrive lacks any features indicating if it's actually enabled I haven't been able to verify that it is, but I can't come up with any reason why it shouldn't be already.
3. Some other changes in Alsa that I haven't managed to track down the slightest bit of information about even after hours of searching. The whole Alsa project is a complete and utter mess when it comes to documentation.
I've tried getting S/PDIF and Headphone output to work from the LiveDrive, to eliminate (2), but that has also failed.
As you can see, I've tried for a while but can't seem to succeed on my own, so all help is greatly appreciated. To just rule out one possibility myself: The LiveDrive is getting power, since the Optical out gives a faint red light when the cap is removed.

Hi,
Is there any simple sound capture sample code available ?
I perform a screencast with help of JMF, and would like to record voice in the same time with the microphone, and merge the two files at the end.
Thanks
Edited by: oisurge on Aug 11, 2009 6:39 AMTo captue sound, you just need to capture from the MediaLocator "javasound://0"

Problems in sound capture and JMF deployment
Hello:
I am new to JMF.
I made an applet using JDK 1.3 on JBuilder 5. This applet captures and plays audio. When I run it through JBuilder's IDE, it runs fine. But when I run it independently, the applet's GUI appears but sound recording doesnn't work. Remember that I have JRE1.4.2 and JMF2.1.1e installed on my machine.
When I installed JMF, I enabled the recording, and file writing options for an applet.
To further check the problem, I ran it through JMF debugger. There I found that it says that ,
<permission javax.sound.sampled.AudioPermission "record";> is not enabled.
To enable it I added this entry in java.policy. This allowed the audio capture to work.
But my question is,
1. Why isn't this entry present by default in java.policy?
2. Even one of my user entered this entry in java.policy, but was unable to capture audio.
3. I want my applet to be running with different users having different versions of JRE,JMF and browser settings. How can I do this, without asking my user to do anything? I simply want that when my user downloads this applet, I should provide him with some installation file that installs JMF as well as configures everything on the system in a way that he can use this applet easily.
Haven't you guys faced such problems in deploying JMF stuff?
I'll be grateful for any help.
Thanks
JamiHi.
I am facing very similar problems: it looks like deploying JMF with Java Applets is really a challange!
On my own test installation, if I enable audio capture and file writing for applets through the JMFRegistry, then I am able to record audio from my test applet, even when executed in the target web browser.
Nevertheless, how to deploy the applet in such a way clients won't be required to manually install JMF and enable audio capture and file writing through the JMFRegistry?
It looks like the JMF Customizer is able to produce a custom JAR also embedding user preferences for audio capture from applets and file writing , is this correct?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Marco. -
Sound capturing problem on Mac and Linux
Hi,
I've an applet that enables users to record (through microphone), play and save audio as a Wav file. The Wav file is saved in the user's home directory. This applet works well on Windows, but not quite on Linux and Mac. When I click Record and say something to the microphone, click Stop and click Play to listen to the recorded audio, nothing is heard. I'm not sure where the bug is, whether it's in the recording or capturing function. I'm quite new to JAVA and the applet was written based on the sample Sound Recorder applet. Really appreciate it if someone could help me out since I need to deliver the final product as soon as possible. Here is the code. Thanks a lot.

/* Ends here */Hi,
are you sure that the systems can handle the samplerate given? Is the mic input selected in the systems audio setup (on mac?)
Just put some singnal (sine or noise) in your buffer to check if the problem is on playback or on recording.

Big crash sound sometime since OSX 10.9 and 10.10...
I have sometime a crash sound (sound destroy since 2/3 seconds), and I haven't find how resolve that
I have a macbookpro 2009, core2duo, 8 Go Ram, SSD internal, sound cart external Motu UltraLight MK3 (Firewire connection).
1) Before with OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion, I never have this problem.
2) There is 1 year, I install Maverick and I have sometime (one time on 2 or 3 hour) a little crash sound (silence or crash sound since 2 seconds).
3) There is 6 month, I add 4 Go Ram to have 8 Go Ram.
No change, after that I have the same problem.
4) All Driver are update.
(On internet, I see it's a problem that many people know but without a good solution, apple don't give the solution, it's sad...)
5) I see on internet that Yosemite resolve this problem.
I Install Yosemite 10.10.1 on an external hard disk (USB connection)... and I boot on it
no change :-/
6) I change my external sound card with an RME Fireface UCX (a nice sound card, I like it)
I think at a moment it's better because I haven't had crash sound since 5 day (5 x 5h use it)...
but the 6 day, there is a big crash sound since 3 secondes.
Why ?
At this moment there is : Traktor + Live + TotalMix (RME) + Digicheck (RME)
Too much prg run ?...
But I see that No overload cpu and 3 Go memory free....
Just for information :
Before with Motu Ultralight MK3 the message error (on consol) with crash (1 on 2,3 hours) :
kernel[0]: IOAudioStream[0xffffff8021ab3200]::clipIfNecessary() - Error: attempting to clip to a position more than one buffer ahead of last clip position (da55,e3c)->(da59,123c)
Now with RME UCX the message error (on consol) when I have the crash (just one on 6 days) :
(what is it the "XPC" ? and why this question "Please switch to XPC..." on logfile ?)
who will have an idea to resolve that ?
Thank you very much for your responds
JLNo difference. I closed FFox installed Flash apparently and then went to Adobe - Flash Player where no animation nor indication of what version of Flash I do have installed. Chrome on the other hand displays this information. FFox plugins page shows that Flash is installed and set to always activate.

No sound captured during Capture Now
First time in many moons using FCP. I'm capturing from a mini DV (Canon Eulura 70) using the Capture Now function. The problem is that it appears that no sound is being captured. I've read other posts about not hearing sound during capture... at the moment I'm using headphones connected to the camera and the sound is fine. I'd prefer to use the computer to monitor the sound but I cannot locate a checkbox anywhere to turn this feature on.
When I drop the captured clips onto the canvas no corresponding audio file appears in the timeline, and no audio plays during playback. I've checked the clip setting in log/capture and it's set to capture both video and audio. I've checked System Settings, and under Scratch disks it's set to capture video and audio separately. Audio playback in FCP is set to built-in audio. Sound is working fine in all other applications.
I've tried trashing the preference files but no effect. Also I tried to just capture audio, and as soon as I hit esc, FCP crashes... this is totally repeatable. I also noticed that on the clip setting tab there is a section with a bunch of sliders (7 in all)... don't know what they do, but they are all greyed out.
Camera works fine in iMovie...
Message was edited by: Ronald Dans1There are no check boxes on that tab, only a pull down list entitled "Capture". The choices are Video and Audio, Video only, Audio only. I have it set to Video and Audio. Perhaps there are checkboxes in another version?

Hello,
From some months I experience the problem with the sound of the iPhone 4s. The sound is really low. You can only hear it if you put your ear very near to the speakers. I've tried everything. Settings -> Sounds to max. Restarting the iPhone. Once I've played Flappy Bird, the sound like fixed itself for 2-3seconds. From low sound it turned very loud but for 2-3 seconds. Then I've tried Restoring the iPhone to its factory settings - nothing again. I lost and my Flappy Bird...
So my Question is - can we fix the sound problem and return my flappy bird? I can't download it from the gamecenter.vikAy,

Inadequate sound capture levels using Audigy 2 w/ Ubuntu Linux.
Hello, everything works fine in Windows XP. I use Audacity to do some basic multitrack recording with my guitar and Line6 POD.
However, I recently installed Ubuntu Linux (5.10) in a dual boot configuration with Windows. I cannot get decent recording levels using my typical recording method: guitar => Line6 POD preamp => Aux 2 (stereo RCA) on Audigy2 ZS Platinum breakout box => Audacity software. I'm wondering if this has something to do with the Linux audio drivers. I have found where to change the audio capture levels for the sound card (ALSA mixer), but even when I max everything out, my record levels are pathetic compared to Windows (-10 dB or more). Does anyone have suggestions? Thanks pzad! At least now I know I'm not going crazy. Still, it's disappointing to come across problems like this. It looks like I'll have to ditch Linux for audio recording purposes, at least until this issue is resolved or I get some new audio hardware.
I gathered from that bug tracker issue that you were planning to release a patch for this issue. Since the issue is still open, I take it that you haven't been able to do this yet? If it's because you don't have the hardware to test, I would be happy to help in any way I can. Just to warn you though: I am a Linux noob. -
I lost the sound after install osx maverick
help me please i dont know what to do...i just installed the osx maverick 10.9 and the sound gone..i check all and its ok...all i can hear is the "chan" at the beginning ,the music plays ok but i cant hear on speakers headphones etc..its seem that some people had the same issue
Do you have a 2nd or 3rd Gen AppleTV on your network? Perhaps the output source was switched during the update. Go to System Preference--->Sound----->output

How do I fix? Flash videos like YouTube won't play sound on MAC OSX 10.5.8
Sound won't play on YouTube and other flash web based videos on my MAC OSX 10.5.8 So I installed the most recent version of Adobe Flash Player and it still doesn't work. I uninstalled and reinstalled adobe flash player. Nada. I updated my computer software and firmware. Still nothing. I checked my sound and apple movie trailers play just fine. Please assist.
Thanks so much!!!!
Oh, I have tried to play videos in both Safari and Firefox. No sound in both.Yay!!!! My business partner @goodbadtech (on twitter) fixed it. Apple repair fixed it. Just got it back this morning. Then I updated Adobe flash as Mozilla asked me to do and the sounds disappeared again! Was so frustrated. But Spencer found this link and that saved the day :-)
