Really really loud macbook fan - with video example!

recently, my mac has been making a really loud noise, and it is obvious that it is the fan.
the video is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVIwrGe17x4
and a better example is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDjmYiUdybI
any ideas?
i've had a look inside my macbook, but there seems to be nothing inside the fan.

I feel your pain. Hardware problems are big headaches...and your fan's noise almost caused me one. I have to say though, that was an extremely funny video! It looked like the camera man was sniffing the computer like a curious dog. Also, what military training film was playing on the screen? Scary. Maybe it scared your fan, too.
Good luck with the 'puter.

  • Really need imac 21.5 with video input!!!

I am current considering selling my PC and buying an iMac. Even though the Hardware of iMac is still not enough for playing games, I am using PS3 for all the video games so that an iMac with video input is perfect for my situation, however the 27 inch iMac model is too large for my desk and the 21.5 iMac version does not have this functionality. Really hope that the new iMac 21.5 model would come with this functionality even if it is as expensive.

  • Loud MacBook fan

My MacBook fan is running at 6200 rpm, 75 degrees almost constantly. In a class yesterday someone asked me to move because my computer was distracting. Please advise!
Even running just one program (FireFox) the fan runs constantly.

hi first time to post here~
my questions goes: the fan of my black macbook has started to "go nuts" for the past few weeks and it never happened before! I checked the fan speed using smcfancontrol and it was always around 6000 (exhaust). at first i thought it got to be the fan control software which messed up my fan and made it run like crazy, but after the uninstallation the problem remained the same. So like some advices here I checked "Activity Monitor" when my fan went crazy again. i found out the latest-updated iTune 8.0 took almost 55% of my CPU-especially whenever I turned on the "Visualizer." as long as I stop using "Visualizer" my fan is back to normal and quiet like a sleeping baby. May I ask is this normal?? Should i take my 4-month-old macbook to apple store for check?

  • TS5296 Battery life is really bad on MacBook Pro with Retina Display 15'' late 2013.

Using only Safari, iTunes and a couple of other apps - Dont worry, i'm not using Chrome, as it's a serious battery killer! - on 50% brightness and im getting around 3-4 hours of battery life which is very disappointing.
Any of you with the same Mac model having this issue ?
    Thank you.

    Thanks for your reply.
It is always there since it first appeared few a weeks ago.
But it becomes much more obvious when the fan gets speeding up or gets slowing down.
So I would say it is only gets worse when a CPU intensive application is running.
It is getting hotter. But it is resonable.
But the high pitch sound is really annoying.

  • Very Loud MacBook Fan

I've had mine since January and never really experienced this before or at least never noticed it.
Lately the fan on my MacBook has been very loud - even at idol speeds (around 1000-2000rpm).
It sounds similar to a clipping or clunking noise and when it reaches the higher speeds it becomes extremely annoying, and it speeds up after watching just one or two flash videos (which makes since because the processor gets hotter) or just becomes very loud whenever it isn't 100% level (sitting in my lap, on my bed, or just picking it up while it's running).
I even tried opening the back and cleaning out the dust, but that did not help much at all. I'm planning on taking it in tomorrow, but has anyone else had this problem?

Some users have reported a noisy fan.

  • Which Macbook Pro for Video Editing

I'd like to buy a macbook pro for video editing on the go and with all the available features, I can't tell which is best.
I use final cut pro 7 and all footage is HD.
    RAM?
    7200rpm vs. 5400 ?
    DUAL CORE vs. QUAD
    INTEL GRAPHICS?
    RETINA?
It's all very confusing, especially since I haven't looked into buying another mac since I purchased an iMac in '07 (which still rocks).

    - Get either a 7200 or SSD internal drive
*You'll need an external hard drive that runs at least 7200rpm for your media (scratch disk)
    - If you can affor it, go with a Quad Core
    - For graphics, I believe all the new MacBook Pros come with Intel HD Graphics 4000
    - As for CPU speed and RAM, they really go hand in hand with video editing.
    - CPU speed doesn't help if you do not have sufficient RAM cover all of needed video/audio/effect editing and rendering processes.
    - Slower CPU with more RAM means that procesess get covered by the additonal RAM, but will take longer to render and preview during editing.
*So when choosing CPU and RAM, do not sacrifice one for the other.
You can always upgrade RAM later if you can't afford it now.
    - Retina? Doesn't make much of a difference for you. You're not editing 4k video so chose what you like better, or   can afford.
Here a post that goes over some basics

  • Where can I get a case specifically for my MacBook Pro with Retina Display?

I really want to get a case/sleeve that really fits my MacBook Pro with Retina Display; however, everywhere I look only has cases for the regular 15" MacBook Pro. I want something that has a tight fit on my Retina. Any ideas?

My guess is they wouldn't introduce new production line just for the 1 or two milimeter difference. They will probably just change their marketing material and websites to add Retina as compatible. Then again I'm not a manufacturer.
In reality though, apart from hard-shell cases/sheilds that have to attach directly on the laptop, the cases and sleeves are already compatible.

  • My MacBook Pro gets really hot when I open a video file of any kind and the video starts lagging and the image fades away, also with anything that starts the fan. Is extremely hot on the left upper corner. Is there something I can do about it?

I have a macbook pro with OSX Mavericks 10.9.5 and some keys randomly are not working. Specifically, the enter/return button, the "p", "0", ";", and all the function keys.  What's really weird is that happens randomly.  I've never spilled anything on it, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to fix this.  Can anyone help?  of course this happened after my warranty expired.

    **update**
I don't know if this will help someone but I am posting this for that purpose.  In the past when I first had this problem, I'd read a post somewhere (sorry, long ago, don't have the link) where an individual was having the same problem and they stated that when the MBP got heated, that's when the keys would stop working, and they went into the MBP and jiggle some stuff around (a specific wire, I'm not electronically inclined so I know NOT of what they spake!).  Well I didn't want to do that but it always stuck in the back of my mind.  I had given up, really, and was planning to take my MBP to the apple store.  But by chance one night I left my MBP on the floor where it's cool, and when I turned it on, the problem went - poof! It seems there was some validity to the post that spoke about heat, because my problems started when I would stream foreign dramas on my MBP for hours at night, and I would hear the fan going off all the time, and in the mornings, my "p", "enter", "0", ";", and all the function keys would stop working.
So, maybe try keeping the MBP in a cool place when it's off.  Since I've started doing this overnight every night (keeping it on the cool floor, out of reach of any big feet), I have not had a single problem with my keyboard.
    Hopefully this might help someone.

  • My MacBook Pro is really hot and the fan is on constantly. It didn't use to do this, does anyone know why this is happening? I have a very short battery life, so I have to keep it plugged in probably more than I should.

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • Macbook Pro with 128Mb video card and gaming

Everyone is saying that the Macbook is no good for gaming. Ok, I can see that. But how does the base model Macbook Pro do with games ? I'm in the market for a new notebook and it's either going to be a black macbook with 2Gb or a macbook pro 2.16Ghz with 128Mb video and 2Gb RAM. I can't afford a more expensive macbook pro with 256Mb of video ram since I'll already be stretching my budget with the 2.16 pro. I'm not a hardcore gamer (used to be, though) but I definitely enjoy gaming from time to time. I don't want to be able to play the lastest games at super high resolutions but I would expect a 2006/2007 computer to be able to run a two year old game like c&c generals without a hitch (which the macbook doesn't, even with the universal binary patch). Anyone have the baseline macbook pro ? How does it do with games (OS X, I'm not planning on forking out for a copy of Windows XP).

I'll second blamb327. I am playing World of Warcraft on my MBP C2D, 128MB video ram, 1.5GB ram. It runs extremely well, in full screen or windowed mode. I prefer to use windowed mode so I can see IMs coming in or email notifications. But it runs really well. It certainly heats up though, usually the high 140s, sometimes into 150. The fans run constantly at about 4000-6000rpm. It still runs cooler than it does when ripping cds or making iMovies. I may put a small desk fan on it for really long sessions, just to keep things running nice and cool.

  • Macbook fan is LOUD!

    Hello all,
I am a college student, and I just bought a 13.3" Retina Macbook Pro less than a week ago. I've noticed that when I am watching Netflix (tried Safari, Firefox and Chrome), my computer gets really hot, really fast. It takes about five to ten minutes of watching before my MBP's fan kicks on and seems to be running at full capacity. It is really, really, loud. So loud that I need to have Netflix's volume up all of the way to drown out the fan noise (and it doesn't cover it up all of the way). It also gets extremely hot within that time (even when set on a perfectly cool, ventilated surface). When I do watch Netflix, I usually use google chrome with one or two other tabs open. For apps, I usually have Skype open and that is it. My CPU usage, at the very most, while running these tasks, is about 35%.
    Specs:
    2.6 ghz processor
    16 GB DDR3
    Using OSX 10.9.2
    AppleCare Warranty
I am very upset, seeing as I spent 2k on a computer that seemingly cannot handle simple things. Even when simply using Pages (without any internet browsers
open), it gets unbearably hot within the hour. Please let me know if you have any ideas as to what might be going wrong! Thanks in advance!

  • Do I really need a Macbook Pro over a Macbook Air?

I'll be using a notebook, well...as a notebook.  But I'll also be using it in a desktop setup with an external monitor at home (which has become largely how I use notebooks these days).  I have an ancient white Macbook currently, which essentially cannot stream videos of any quality.  My question is if I really need a Macbook Pro (I would wait for the new Retina update due in the next couple of months) or would the currently generation of Macbook Air suffice?  I would definitely need something capable of streaming HD videos online (think Netflix, etc.)  Thanks fellas.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The MacBook Air works for that job without any problem. The Intel HD Graphics 5000 GPU is not the best you can find, but it can stream HD videos. Also, note that the 13-inch MacBook Pro has got an older GPU which is similar. You don't need a 15-inch MacBook Pro to stream HD videos

  • During editing on MacBook Pro 2.2GHz i7, audio goes out of sinc with video

I have been having a lot of trouble with audio going out of sinc after I have edited a 30 minute program.  When I make a second cut, I find that the audio has jumped under the first cut about half an inch back, and this happens with every progressive cut.  Then after "sharing" to dvd the audio is out of sinc with video throughout.  I then have moved each one of these overlaps back into position and still have a problem with audio out of sinc.
    HELP.

I was using a different laptop for post since the macbook was busy "sharing" to dvd, which, since I closely examined each cut at highest magnification to fix them ended up making video watchable.  Not every cut came out of sinc, but several do.
It is both sides of the cut which come out of sinc, the right side laps over the left and then I noticed when I corrected them with greater magnification that the left side was moved left to cause a gap.  I guess I just have to closely examine each cut when done with the whole video since also these overlaps are caused when I zoom out to view the whole length of the timeline, most of the cuts will overlap at that moment.  Really strange.  I had trouble fixing these but less trouble whe I turned off the snap in option.
