Really really really dumb question

It seems like I spend a great deal of time tracking down null pointer exceptions in my code. (I think everyone does). The only way I know how to do this is go in and put debug flags everwhere and catch runtime exceptions after every line etc. What would be AMAZINGLY cool is if java, when it throws a NPE, could tell me the name of the variable that was null when I tried to call a method on it. Is this possible or am I missing something big?
thanks

Another thing is, most of what I'm writing is Servlets and Applets. Usually I can only run these in the containers that were designed of them because only these containers have the specialized objects for their environment (where am I going to get an HttpServletRequest on the command line?). What kind of IDE would allow me to debug specialized objects like these?
thanks

  • This maybe a really dumb question...

I know this maybe a really dumb question but I do need to ask:
-Do I need to buy a new vista to install on my new mac?
(I have a start up one that was included with my previous pc laptop..)
-In terms of partitioning, how should I distribute space?
    Thank you in advance.

    jlee636:
The Boot Camp installation guide is [HERE|http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp>. It should be able to answer questions related to installation. Of course these discussions have several other information on boot camp/ windows. All you need to do is launch a search on them.
-In terms of partitioning, how should I distribute space?
Too many people make a partition very small and then regret having done so. My recommendation is to have a partition of at least 32GB. It is highly dependent on what your will be installing on Windows XP/Vista.
-Do I need to buy a new vista to install on my new mac?(I have a start up one that was included with my previous pc laptop..)
It is more than likely that the Windows disk that came with your previous PC/Laptop is an OEM disk and will only work properly with that particular PC. This is generally the case with Dell, HP, Sony etc. The installation disk in the cases above are usually branded.
For more information on which Windows version(s) work with Boot Camp then please click [HERE|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/11889.html].

  • Two really quick/dumb questions!

    Hi All,
I have just bought a new Mac Mini and hooked it up to my Samsung 55 inch TV via HDMI and everything seems do be working great.
    My two dumb questions are:
1: where on the new OS (I had a Mac 5 years ago and things have changed) is the top "Finder" bar and "disc" icon to save files?
2: In Safari I do not seem to have a tools bar where I can for example open another tab for a new web page.
Hope you can help a nubby :-)

You are running a Mini so it might be that the screen resolution is not exact for your display. I have used a Mini with a conventional display but not HDTV. You might need to go into the settings for the TV to set the screen resolution to accommodate the mini's capabilities. Sorry that  I can't offer more on that score; when I use my Sony Bravia HDTV  it is with the iPad2 and HDMI and I have encountered no issues. Perhaps someone else on the forum has better insight into the Menu Bar problem on the Samsung as the principal display.

  • Really dumb question re Quicktime Pro

    Good morning . .
My Mac is running OS 10.4.9 and I have updated my Quicktime player to 7.3.1.
Purchased Quicktime PRO, registered successfully but still only get Quicktime Player when opening the program. Any suggestions where to find QT Pro? Sorry for the dumb question but thanks for your help.
    Jon

There is no separate QT Pro application. Successfully registering Pro enables Pro features already present in the Player. Items that previosly mentioned Pro should now just list the feature without mentioning Pro.

  • Probably a really dumb question...but so am I

Just bought a brand new iMac (specs below). Old one? Panther (3.10.9), 1 GHz, 2 RAM, 80 GB space)
Keeping the old iMac. A perfectly good machine. Only reason I bought a new one: kind of maxed out regarding my primary use of a computer...home music recording. Just needed more space, power, speed, etc.
Question: Before I call the phone company (our ISP: ATT), want your advice.
Can I just hook up two computers (both iMacs, one old, one new), on the same telephone line (a land line...this would be the only phone line coming into the house), and have them work? Or, would the ISP, the telephone company, charge us more for doing this? Meaning operating two computers on the same line simultaneously. (Forget about wireless here. Don't use it, not sure that I will anytime soon.)
Why couldn't I just plug in the other computer into a phone jack in another room in the house and have it work while the other one, in another room but using the same phone line, is running at the same time? Both simultaneously. (Sure, I'd need a modem for each machine going into the ethernet port.)
As I said, possibly a dumb question. On the other hand, I'm pretty dumb too.
    Thoughts, advice, suggestions? Greatly appreciated.

It's probably connecting to a broadband modem (DSL or ADSL). That device allows you to get the high speed internet going on using the same phone jack in your house, and connects to the computer through an ethernet cable.
"Old school" or dial-up modems are traditionally built into the computer or plug into a USB port, and then use a normal phone cord (same thing other phones in the house use). Aside from being super slow, your line is usually busy and you're unable to make/receive calls when you're online.
I'm guessing you're connecting to a broadband modem (since you mentioned ethernet cable). With that in mind, the answer is yes, you can hook both those computers up so they can be online at the same time. What you need is what's called a router or switch, and they're not very expensive. One line connects to your broadband modem, then you have 3-4 jacks that you can plug additional computers in (so they can all use the connection at once).
If you want to have the machines in different rooms but don't want to run wires everywhere, look for a wi-fi router, which will usually give you a few jacks for connecting computers that don't have wi-fi but will also let you do a wireless internet hookup for your new iMac, the old one (if it has wi-fi), and even iPhones if you have 'em.
Apple has two products that might work for you. The Airport Extreme Base Station has super-fast wifi plus jacks for plugging computers in via ethernet, and even lets you share a printer. http://www.apple.com/airportextreme/ The Time Capsule does all that, and also has a built in hard drive (you can get with a 1TB or 2TB hard drive), which is great for using Time Machine. We've had a Time Capsule since they first came out and love it - super easy to set up, and all the backup stuff just happens without having to worry about it.
    Hope that helps!

  • Using the USB port for an external HD dumb question

OK. Forgive a possibly really dumb question here...
My external HD has a USB 2.0 interface and I hooked it up to the USB port using a cable that came with an old USB 1 hub I'm not using right now.
My dumb question is this: is there such a thing as a USB 2.0 cable? Or are the USB cables all the same?
Also, how long should it be taking to transfer 12.1 GB of data (about 9,000 photos) from my external HD mounted on the AirMac base station to my MBP? There are still 48 minutes left and it seems an awfully long time for 12.1 GB of data. That's why I was wondering if the cable could be an issue...
    Thanks,
    doug

I am suspecting now that my HD might really have been a USB 1.0 drive...

  • OBIEE 11g pivot dumb question - changing order of measure columns

Hi, dumb question, in OBIEE 11g, if using a table view it is easy for end users to drag and drop the measure columns in any order desired. Is there a way for end users to change the order of measures when using a pivot view?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Hi Dpka, no, moving to rows doesn't really solve the issue. Dimensions don't allow you to change the order of the members, except by alphabetic sort.
Lets say the default pivot has three measure columns in this order:
    1. Sales
    2. Revenue
    3. Cost of Goods Sold.
If a user wants to change the order of the columns to be:
    1. Sales
    2. Cost of Goods Sold
    3. Revenue
on a table they just drag the columns the way they want them. On a pivot, it appears that there is no way to change this.
    Thx,
    Scott

  • Dumb question Mac Mail inbox synchronisation

I'm really sorry if this is a dumb question...I have just started using Mac Mail (from Entourage) with a .Mac account and want to synchronise my messages across my two Macs. I thought that if I deleted messages on one mac, they would be deleted from the server and when I checked mail on the other Mac they would be gone. However, this does not seem to be the case - instead, I need to delete them on both macs. Is something in my setup wrong?
    Thanks for any help

I haven't....are you saying you think I should? Funnily enough, after never having had a problem before, I had a problem syncing my bookmarks yesterday, so maybe I should resetting the SyncServices.
Also, on the .Mac preferences - does it matter if the syncing schedule is set to be automatic, every hour, manual etc? Previously I had it set as manual, but maybe I need to set it as automatic?
Thanks again so much for your help.

  • Dumb question about browser dectection

I have a web application that looks awesome in IE but in Firefox it looks clunky and blocky. What I need to perform is a validation to see what browser the client is using. I have done this before on simple html pages javascript browser sniffing. Well it seems that I can't for the life of me to be able to get this working in Creator.
My web project is a Sun Creator Web application. My OS is Windows
Does anyone have any idea or references that you could supply to me?
The following code works in an html environment but in a jsp I cant get the different style sheets to work.
    document.write("<link id="link1" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/WebDemoExtractor/resources/introductionFireFox.css" /> ");
U jave tried many variations of the following
    document.write("<ui:link binding='#{introduction.link2}' id='link2' url='/resources/introductionFireFox.css'/>")
I have tried performing many variations with the the above and I have had no success.
Is it even possible to perform this function??
    Thank you

Not a dumb question at all.
I think you mean how is it possible to view YouTube videos in Safari on iPad, right?
Basically, YouTube senses the browser you're using. Because Safari on iPad doesn't support Flash, YouTube delivers the movie in a format the iPad can play (like H.264, as a previous post mentioned). This happens with YouTube videos embedded on other web sites, too.
    I hope this helps.
I was in an Apple Store a few days ago, and a teenage kid really wanted an iPad. His dad said, "but it doesn't play flash, so you won't get to see YouTube videos that you love." Kid said, something expletive deleted.
The son then picked up the iPad, and he clicked on the YouTube icon. Walked out of the store with it. Sales guy and I laughed. Made my day.

  • Extremely dumb question

    Hi,
              This is really basics, but...
Replicated JNDI is the most obvious answer to the following questions,
but considering that bindings are removed on a failure of the host, it
              doesn't really work for failover.
Let say I have a stateless bean that provides a description of the
capabilities of a service implemented by the server application.
Doesn't really matter. Importantly, it is not related to any
particular session. A requirement states that the bean must not be
created till the first request to functions it provides is issued. So,
pre-instantiating it by the start-up classes is discouraged.
Where should I keep the reference to the stub after the bean is
created by the front-end servlet, so that it would survive failover
and would be available to all the servers in a cluster? Servers are
brought into the cluster dynamically over a period of time.
A similar question. Let say a user object is an application-wide
resource. Where do I keep it, so that it would survive a failover?
              Thanx

  • Dumb Question, Seriously!

Hi, I must warn you in advance that the following is a really dumb question, seriously!
Now I didn't order the version of Final Cut Pro that I have now, but a family member did for me. A colleague was telling me that the Final Cut Pro HD version comes bundled with Soundtrack Pro, Motion, and etc. I do infact have all of those programs on my mac as we speak. My question is this colleague of mind correct?
I was going to order the famed Lisa Brenneis guide to Final Cut, and there different versions of the book ranging from Final Cut Pro 3 and beyond.
    Any assistance is gladly appreciated.

    Welcome to the forum!
Final Cut Pro was originally sold as a separate software title. With the introduction of FCP 4, Apple bundled LiveType, SoundTrack and Compressor. Also available was the "Production Suite" which included FCP (with the same bundled apps), DVD-SP and Motion 1.
Early last year Apple discontinued the availability of FCP and the other pro-apps as separate titles and bundled them all in a package called "Final Cut Studio" (includes FCP 5.0, DVD-SP 4, Compressor 2, LiveType, SoundTrack Pro and Motion 2).
FWIW, the only version of FCP to be officially called "Final Cut Pro HD" was version 4.5 (a free update from FCP 4.0). All other versions are just plain ole "Final Cut Pro."

  • Two dumba$$ questions

Sorry, I know these are two really stupid questions, but I know nothing at all. I've just bought a new iBook after ahving a really ancient Mac. Both my questions are to do with Garageband...so here goes...
    Question 1
What other equipment do I need to be able to record real instruments (string quartet)?
    Question 2
I was just having some fun the other night, making up some stuff and trying to familiarize myself with the whole Garageband thing (which I love already).
As I was adding loops I had the sneaking suspicion that some where starting to go missing - why was there an 'Acoustic Noodling' numbers 2, 3, 4 etc but no number 1? Where were 'Asian Gamelan' 3 and 4?
Chose not to save anything I'd done so far and after did a quick search in the Garageband loops search bit, but nothing came up. Went through the installation disk thinking it would put back anything that had gone missing. Still nothing. Did a spotlight search and a few of the items I thought had gone missing were in iTunes.
Maybe they were never in the Garageband loops samples first place? Is this possible? Is there somewhere that lists what loops come with Garageband? I'm starting to doubt my own sanity, especially since I went through the installation disk...
I now have the following samples on my desktop - ones which I thought had gone AWOL:
    Acoustic Noodling 1; Asian Gamelan 3 and 4;
Middle Eastern Oud 3 and 4.
I have tried to drag them into the Garageband loops section, but they seem to disappear into the iTunes...I have no idea what's going on...
Apologies in advance for these dumb questions.

For what you need to do your string quartet recording, read HangTime's FAQ to get started:
    http://www.thehangtime.com/gb/gbfaq2.html
Contrary to what you might think, you probably don't want to record the four members of the quartet separately on their own tracks, each with a mic close to the instrument. String quartets need to play all the parts together at once, to get the best feel and performance.
You'll probably want to put up a pair of mikes arranged in a stereo pattern, at some distance from the string quartet (a couple of meters at least), in a nice live-sounding room. Mike placement techniques are hard to describe in this kind of forum, but you can find textbooks on the subject with diagrams.
You'll need a matched pair of better-than-average-quality condenser microphones, and an audio-to-computer interface with better-than-average preamps.

  • Dumb question regarding CPU architecture

The question I'm about to ask must seem like really basic knowledge to most of you, so first of all, I apologize to subjecting you all to such a dumb question. Anyway -
I am looking to try ArchLinux out. I'm quite experienced with the two major commercial platforms, have used several other "no setup" Linux distros, and am comfortable with the command line for the most part. Arch, I thought, would be interesting to try out - something a little more to sink my teeth into.
So I hopped on over to the download page, where I am asked to choose the file appropriate for my processor's architecture. Thing is, as a longtime Mac user who has only recently become acquainted with Intel and AMD CPUs, I don't know some details. I know basics and the major differences between them, but not the architecture.
Without further ado, the question: Are desktop Core i5s i686 processors? Is the i686 build required or more suited for the processor than the generic x86-64 build?
    Thanks!

i686 was (strictly speaking) the Pentium Pro processors
    i786 was Netburst, i.e. Pentium4/D
    i886 was Core2
    i986 is Nehalem/Westmere (i.e. your i7/i5/i3)
That being said, the ix86 terminology was dropped due to copyright as I recall.  LOTS of stuff on Wiki on this topic--throw those CPU generation ix86 numbers in and read away.  You're using a Core2 or higher, there's no reason not to us 64bit.

  • Dumb question about cycling a battery. Sorry!

I just received by new mac book pro replacement battery today and I have some questions regarding it. First of all, my original battery lasted 2 yrs, 2 mos. I purchased another apple battery for my 15 inch mac book pro (computer originally purch. Aug. 2007). I've seen on these boards that I'm supposed to "cycle" the battery once a week to get the maximum life out of it. I think a cycle means using the battery until it's power is used up and then charge up to 100% again. Is that right? Anyway, my question is, "What is the proper care for this new battery? Does it damage it to have it plugged in when it is fully charged? Or should I always keep it unplugged and use the battery until it runs out and then charge it again? And what does it mean to cycle it once a week, if I'm already using the battery and recharging it when needed?" Sorry if these are dumb questions. I'm not really computer savvy! Thanks.

You should use the battery for a while every day but not drain it right down, before re-connecting the power and re-charging it to 95%+ this is not a complete cycle but partial/normal cycling.
_Every couple of months_ you should re-calibrate the battery which means you keep using it until it goes into emergency sleep itself (you will see a warning then 5 minutes later it will go off by itself) and then _leave it in this state for at least 5 hours_ before you re-connect the power supply and fully charge it (without unplugging) - this is a proper re-calibration.

My iPad mail is synced to my private email account, which I organise on my iMac. On iPad, I can only see inbox and sent messages folders, not any of the other folders in my email account I have created on my iMac. How do I get iPad to show my other folders? Probably a dumb question, but I know there's a lot of smart people out there.

If you select a mailbox, you should get an Edit button (easier to see in landscape mode). Clicking the button will provide you with check circles for the messages. You also get Delete and Move buttons at the bottom. Check the messages you want to move and then navigate to the mailbox you want to drop them into. I think as long as you can navigate to a mailbox you can move the messages to it.
In the Mac Mail application and probably Outlook on the Windows side, you also setup rules to move messages to specific mailboxes. If the mailboxes are stored on the server, then you can have the sorting done on the server and they should appear that way on the iPad. If your later messages do not show up, you may need to have the iPad app pulled down more messages until they are all showing.
