Really screwed up

Okay my last post I tried to find out what happened to my webcam and usb ports with no luck. So in my endeavour of not giving up .I did a factory restore and now have the old familiar problem with the warning sound you get when connecting and disconnecting USB devices . To start with my integrated webcam doesnt work nor is it shown in system anywhere .I went to Toshiba site and downloaded and ran the toshiba webcam application software and it never took .Any reason for this . Now suddenly after this restore also have a unknown device showing up in USB. In device manager it shows all hubs and controllers as working and software up to date.
I feel if I can get webcam application software to take things may start to work again . Let me ask again why wont it take or is it possible hardware failure prevents it from taking

USB Problem :
You may be able to change the usb card but it may well be your mothereboard. A low cost fix if I am seeing your model correct is to use a - USB 2.0 cardbus PC card adapter, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16839158032  This is one so you can see if it will work for your laptop, and to verify you have a cardbus slot - $25.
I have used one different brand, cheap compared to the cost of a new motherboard.
USB board - will not do anything if it is your motherboard

    Hello yung ron,
It may be that your iPhone's set to sync automatically, which can potentially remove any music that's been added to the device. It may help to set the device to 'manual mode,' so that you have complete and total control over what content is on the device.

  • Netscape Mail Really Screwed Up NOW (Saturday 8.26.06) HELP

Netscape has really screwed up now. Since I have both a .mac account, and set up four netscape email accounts, I jump back and forth to both.
As of this weekend, netscape has aparently dropped or trashed hundreds of thousands of their email accounts, while switching over to their new AOL email system.
They only make their email accounts login work for Mac OS 10.3.9 users, running the newer Safari. For all users of Apple OS 10.2+ it seems they have dropped those accounts completely.
I alone, have over three years of emails and linked accounts to eBay and PayPal through netscape. They never even sent out email notices to account users of this switch over.
Is anyone using OS 10.2.8, having netscape email accounts, able to find a way to acces their netscape email?
Looks like I will have to start all over again, possibly set up multiple .mac email accounts. Atleast this way, I will always have control over my email through Apple.
To netscape if your reading this: "I was an avid user of netscape home page and email until this weekend .... now my credo is DIE NETSCAPE/AOL ... can you say CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT?!"

It has been known for some time that Netscape Mail would be upgraded. It is now AIM Mail. Saved emails will have a life of 27 days. If you need them, you should print them as hard copies. I don't think the class action lawsuit will work since the Terms of Use have always stated that any accounts can be terminated without notice. I'd also advise upgrading the Mac OS since future Apple features might require more recent software. Examples are QuickTime 7.1.2 and video capability in iTunes 6.0.5.

  • IOS 8.1 Really Screwed Up My 4S!

I didn't want to upgrade. I ignored the reminder for a long time. But last week, suddenly ALL of my apps were showing that they needed to be updated. I ignored that too until I tried to open my banking app and found that it would no longer open unless I upgraded my IOS. So I went ahead and did it feeling I had no choice. Now, nothing works very well on my phone! I am so upset! I'm sure Apple would say, "It's a 2 yr old phone, just get a new one." But I like my 4S. Or I did. Apps crash or don't open at all. If I'm on Google and want to post a link somewhere else, and then I come back to Google, it's been reset and I have to re-do my search and find my place again. It never used to do that. It would hold my place until I closed the app completely or after a longer period of time. The resetting thing appears to apply for all the apps too. For example, a forum I'm on does the same thing. If I leave the forum app to go pull a picture from Flickr or Google, or something, the forum app resets and I have to enter it from the beginning again, watching the ads, and then finding my place. If I had been typing something, forget it....that's gone. Apps like Instagram, Vine, Twitter, and Youtube are hard to look at because they don't scroll smoothly anymore. It even seems that the new IOS has affected my touchscreen in some way because I have trouble using that too. Just swiping to open the phone is a chore! I have to swipe 4-5 times to get it to open! Same with answering phone calls! Typing anything is difficult too because the touchscreen just doesn't work the same anymore. In fact, I started this message on my phone and the touchscreen stopped working so I had to get on the computer to finish the message.
I understand Apple's need to make money and try to push people into upgrading their phones. But when they do something like this...making existing customer's phones practically unusable, it doesn't make us feel all warm and cozy about the company. Apple did not have to FORCE the new IOS on those of us who have 4Ss or even the 5s. It wasn't necessary. My daughter and I both have iphones and right now, we are both so frustrated with how our phones are performing that we're ready to say "screw it" and go buy an Android phone. How's that for instilling customer loyalty? I was just about ready to upgrade to the iphone 6, but honestly, now I just don't know. Why would I subject myself to staying with a company that does this to their customers?
Anyway, I'm going to have to do something soon since my phone is practically unusable now. Thanks to Apple, I no longer have the luxury of waiting.

Of course, you and Chris are both right. I'm just really frustrated right now. I do love my iPhone and use it constantly, but this new update has really put a huge damper on things. I am planning to upgrade soon, but I wanted to wait a couple of months since I just spent $1,500 on car repairs. I don't want to upgrade just for the sake of upgrading. I want to get what I want...and that would be the larger storage...and the larger price. So now I'm frustrated because my phone doesn't work properly and I have to live with it for a while. Yes, I have done plenty of troubleshooting. One of my best friends used to work for Apple iPhone support and knows all the different tricks and troubleshooting tips to try. In addition to that, I've deleted several apps, messages, and photos to get my storage down to as low as possible thinking that might help matters. (it didn't) I thought maybe it was behaving like a computer does when the hard drive gets too full and things begin to get sluggish. My phone is a 32GB and I had 20GB full. Now I'm down to about 16GB, but it hasn't made a difference in the performance. I've turned everything off that can be turned off and clear my background apps every time I use it. I reboot the phone a couple of times a day.
Anyway, sorry for the rant. I'm just so frustrated about my phone not working that I'm ready to pull my hair out.

  • I think I really screwed up --- need help badly.

    Hello ---
Today I did something I have wanted to do for a long time. I put a new Newer Tech 1.6 Gb processor in my trusty G4 733 digital audio machine. I did everything the manual said correctly, performed the firmware update, installed the new processor, and --- you guessed it --- nothing! Computer wouldn't boot at all from either drive or from a cd rom. The monitor tells me there is no video in, and the power button on the front only illuminates when I press it --- then it goes dark again. The reset button on the front doesn't do anything anymore either. I have reset the PRAM, and even reinstalled the original processor, with the same result --- nothing. I hope someone out there can give me some advice, as I have an awful lot of myself in that machine. Thank goodness I have this laptop I'm using right now, or I couldn't even ask for help. Any advice would be appreciated.

PowerMac G4 Digital Audio 733   Mac OS X (10.3.8)   Other drive has OS 9.2.2

Thank you all for your responses. I checked the voltage in the PMU battery again this AM --- 3.7V, so it appears as if it is OK. However, I will buy a new one either today or tomorrow anyway just in case. As far as whether the cpu cards were fully seated, I'm sure they were. I seated the new one, removed it when it didn't work the first time, reseated it again, and it still didn't work. That's when I removed it again and re-installed the original, and I'm sure it's seated all the way. Both of them heated up while the power was on, and the fans operate on both of them. As far as the video card goes, I didn't touch or come anywhere near it, so I don't see how it could be not plugged in. The card I have actually has two screws holding it in place. What I really don't understand is, why do only portions of this machine not operate now? Why, for instance, does the Superdrive work, or at least make noise when I try to boot from a CD (of course I can't tell what's happening because the monitor is not getting input), and why does the power button illuminate when I press it and then go off. Why do neither the reset or the programmer's button on the front function? Is there some component of this machine, other than the logic board (by the way, is that synonomous with the motherboard?) which could have malfunctioned instead of the logic board itself? I appreciate your comments regarding the fact that "all is not lost". I thought about those same things last night while trying to sleep. I know I can remount my drives in external cases if I have to, and I'm sure I can replace the logic board also if that's necessary. It's all just a big pain, and I'm either mad at myself for doing a lousy job, or mad at OWC for selling a lousy product. I just don't know who to be mad at more.
    Thanks again,

  • Apple has really screwed the pooch on iTunes 7.

    I am venting, ok.
After spending probably 10 hours rebuilding my tunes library (fortunately I saved it on other disks), I now cannot get the iPod to load the files, and it locks up the PC when it tries.
I just don't know where to go now. I think something like a class action, which I have always been opposed to, may be in order. This is really inexcusable!
    J-

I agree. Really bad software. I haven't used my iPod in more than a week because, oh yeah, iTunes 7 wiped it out and turned it into a $200 paperweight. I certainly won't be buying anything from Apple anytime soon.

  • I really screwed up...help!

I won't give you the history of why I'm trying to erase my HD, but I am, and now I think I've really done it.
I was trying to overwrite the disk to zeros. Well, it got stuck (I guess) with no progress 1/3 of the way through for hours. Frustrated, I quit Disk Utility and blithely ignored the warning that stopping in the middle of the operation could make my disk non-operational. Didn't seem to have a choice.
Now my Hard Drive is gone. Disk Utility tries to find it, not there. Actually, it did show up once after I did this, and I tried the "write to zeros" erase option again. This time it only got a tiny bit of progress before it stopped, again, for hours, and I quit again.
Now it's completely gone (and makes a wonderful funny noise). Is it time for the trash?

    Hi, Linda -
The jumpers on a drive are little plastic thingies that bridge (jump) two pins in an array of pins. There should be a block of jumper pins on one end of the drive; some of those will probably have jumpers on them.
Moving or removing jumpers is how the drive's address is changed - from Master to Slave, for example.
There should be a label affixed to the top or bottom of the drive at that same end - this label depicts the positions the jumpers should be in for the various settings for that drive. I usually have to use a magnifying glass to read the label....
By chance is the drive's model number actually IC35L060AVER07 ? If so, there's a PDF of its manual available for it here - PDF
I found that via a Google search which lead to this page at Hitachi's support website (Hitachi apparently acquired the IBM line of hard drives).
Pages 42 and 43 depict and discuss that jumper, which is labeled as the 2/32 GB Clip. If it is present, try removing it.
Remember to be cautious about static electricity when working inside a computer. After opening the Mac, before touching anything else touch the metal case of the power supply for a few seconds to ground off any static charge you may be carrying. Avoid touching anything you don't need to, particularly anything on the logic board.
The drives on a G4 are very easy to get to.

    Hi ckuan,
Thanks alot for the advice - great to see there are so many helpful people out there . Anyway, I followed your instructions and although some of the apps transferred from i tunes to my iPad the first time, unfortunately some of the apps that I selected to transfer (which were purchased) did not transfer. There were only a few but it would have been great to have got them back onto my iPad!
    Chow for now!

  • Went back from Tiger to Panther and have really screwed up...

I have been unsuccessfully trying to get an HP Color Laser Jet 2600n to print with a GC iMac running Tiger, and finally decided Tiger just won't play nice with it, as I have another older G3 iMac running Panther that will print. So, I decided to go back to Panther on the first G3. And like a moron, didn't bother to read ahead of time online if there was anything I should do. And so I archived settings and preferences, and now cannot login to the computer. Is there anything I can do, or have I just royally screwed myself? I tried reinstalling Panther using the disk, and it installed again, but I still can't login- when I booted the computer using the disk, it didn't give me the archive option; it just installed the software.
Is there anything I can do? Anything at all? Oh, I'm so mad at myself!

Do you have another Mac? If so, you could boot your machine into target disk mode (hold down 't'), hook it up using a firewire cable to the other Mac and recover your stuff that way. Essentially, target disk mode turns the computer into a very expensive hard drive.
Alternatively, if you have an external drive you could boot from, you could install OS X on that drive, boot from that and try to recover the data that way.
The best option depends on what you have available to work with. If you post back details of what' available, somebody can help you figure out the best strategy.

  • My color's really screwed up

I just bought a MBP and the colour is really bad. For all colours of grey, I'm getting a slight brown over-shade — like a light sepia.
I haven't touched the colour calibration; my colour profile's set to "Color LCD"; I don't know what could be the problem. I've got my old Mac and the new MBP side-by-side and I can clearly see something's wrong.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do you have the LED rather than the LCD display? There have been issues concerning a yellowish tint on the display for some of these machines. You might do a search--you are not alone on this. You might see if you can exchange it for one that doesn't have tis problem. I think there was a run of bad displays.
    Good luck!

  • Apple really screwed the pooch with IOS 6 and iPad wifi

Around 7 PM EDT my IPad 3 disconnected wifi. Every time I tried to restart it I went to some sort of page at Apple which told me the page (whatever it is) couldn't be found and turned off wifi.
I'm really ****** that Apple has demonstrated - intentionally or not - that they can brick our Apple products whenever they feel like it.
So much for not worrying about Apple products or software.
No way will I even look at the iPhone 5 now!

I really hope these bugs are temporary because I really liked iOS 5 and on paper iOS 6 seems so much better but bugs are just ruining the experience.

  • Pls Help. i really screwed myself

I just accidentally erased one of my internal drives using disk utility Mac OS Extended (Journaled) "used the default securty option". Is there a way to recover this drive? Thanks to anyone who responds.

Sorry but probably not. To have any hope of recovering your tracks, though, you need to immediately stop using your system and then go out and get a copy of a recovery tool such as Data Rescue (Prosoft Engineering), or File Salvage (SubRosaSoft). The chances generally aren't really good even so, particularly with Mac OS X which reuses space much differently than did earlier versions of Mac OS, but short of sending your drive to a data recovery service (expensive and by no means guaranteed), such utilities are your only hope.
Note that the more you use your system before you attempt recovery, the more likely it is that the system will overwrite the sections of the drive where the data you want to recover is stored, rendering it unrecoverable by any means. You should therefore stop using the system completely until you get and try to use one of the file recovery tools.
    Good luck.

  • Adobe really screwed the pooch this time...c'mon, when ya gonna fix this?!

    That is all...

I've started to see the error "only a single instance of this app can run" crop up in the last week or so, I suspect it's part of the download manager but I'll look into it.  However, I suspect you have installed Flash but there's something that's blocking it in IE.  Since you're running IE9, can you first check out your ActiveX Filtering settings?  If that looks fine, please ensure that the Shockwave Flash Object is enabled:
    1. Open the Manage add-ons dialog
    2. Find the Shockwave Flash Object entry and verify that it is enabled.
If you don't see the Flash Object entry, then you did run into a install problem.  Let me know and we'll  try a few other things.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • I've really screwed this up ... trying to install with fake raid

    Howdy,
Last week after performing a pacman upgrade I had an issue where I decided to re-install my machine.  However, that's not why I am writing this post at this time.
In the process of trying to do a clean install I inadvertently mixed up Software Raid and Fake Raid stuff.  I want to use the Fake Raid instead of the Software Raid
with mdadm.  However, after I boot the installer and load the dmraid (per the instructions on the Wiki [Installing _with_Fake_RAID] I see the following:
    [root@archiso ~]# modprobe dm-mod
    [root@archiso ~]# dmraid -ay
    [ 344.968115] device-mapper: table: 254:3: mirror: Device lookup failure
RAID set "isw_fcbggahhg_Volume0" was not activated
ERROR: device "isw_fcbggahhg_Volume0" could not be found
However, here is what I see that I think is causing the problem:
    [root@archiso ~]# cat /proc/mdstat
    Personalities : [raid1]
    md126 : active raid1 sda[1] sdb[0]
    488383488 blocks super external:/md127/0 [2/2] [UU]
    [==>..................] resync = 11.0% (53857728/488383620) finish=78.0min speed=92829K/sec
    md127 : inactive sdb[1](S) sda[0](S)
    5928 blocks super external:imsm
    unused devices: <none>
    [root@archiso ~]#
The RAID controller on the machine is an Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager option ROM v8.0.0.1038 ICH10R wRAID5.  I have the two Hitachi 500GB drives
configured in the RAID Volume as RAID1.
Again, I think that the first thing I need to do is to wipe out any instances or references on the disks regarding the mdadm stuff.  Can anyone help me
with this?  Secondly, after wiping out any of the mdadm stuff shouldn't the RAID set come up automatically in the installer after I load the dm-mod module
    and the dmraid -ay command?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated,
    Pete

Well, I did make a little bit more progress.  I decided to try an install off the archlinux-2010-05 netinstall duo cd
that I had here and things seem to be working the way that they should.  Meaning after I boot the installer and do
a modprobe dm-mod and then a dmraid -ay it sees and activates the RAID set.  I then can do a vgscan and a
vgchange -ay and have it load the VolumeGroup and Logical Volumes that I have setup and proceed to the install.
Things go as they should until I get to the end part where I need to install GRUB.  I followed the instructions and
all seems to have gone the way that it should but the machine won't boot.  Any ideas?
    Pete
