Really Slow Infinity Speeds.

Had a problem with my line a couple of times were my connection kept dropping. the guys in indie suposedly fixed it twice but now that it has been sorted my internet speed has dropped from 30-40 mbps download and 10-12 up to 10-12 download and 0.6 upload.. why should i pay for bt infinity when im only getting ADSL speeds?

Check to see if you may be suffering from star wiring.
~~~
A fairly common form of miswiring is star wiring.  This is where extensions are taken off a junction box between the incoming telephone feed and the master socket.  These extensions may be regular telephone extensions, or may be SkyBoxes or alarms.  Those can cause serious issues.  It can be quite bad even if the extension isn't used, much worse if the extension is used.  If the extension is used, an old ADSL filter can make the issues marginally less bad.
Star wiring was not a problem with regular telephones (often installed in GPO days), or even a significant problem with ADSL.  It wreaks havoc with VDSL/FTTC/Infinity.  It is often not noticed by installers.  I asked my installer about it because it seemed odd, and he explicitly said it didn't matter (eg, he coulnd't be bothered).  There seem to be lots of evidence that subcontractors are more likely to miss/ignore it than real Openreach staff (I can't remember who got mine wrong).
  • Slow Infinity speed on Xbox, PS3 and Sky despite h...
    I have recently switched from Sky to BT and have a BT Infinity 2 package. My computer is working well and achieves a very good speed - 76Mps down. I am delighted with this. However, despite all my devices being 'hard wired' via ethernet I am getting very slow dowload speeds on my xbox, ps3 and Sky HD box.
    Sky Anytime + Takes over an hour to be ready to play an SD movie
    Iplayer constantly buffers on PS3 and Xbox
    A 56mb File on Xbox live takes 10+ minutes to download (dread to think how long a large file would take!)
    I have tried swapping the ports and cables and have tried resetting the homehub. There are no faults on the line and I have had an engineer look at the installation.
    I am now very frustrated as when I was with sky on an 8mb connection I had no problems at all with all my devices.
    Does anyone out there have any ideas? I would be really grateful them as I am thinking of going back to what worked!
    Thanks
  • Help, really slow BB speed
    Hi
    I have been with BT since beginning of August, previously with TalkTalk for about 4 years prior. I always had really good speed with TT, always near the max for my line (which can provide upto 20mbps).
    Now with BT everything was fine for August/Sept, now we are in October my connection is really slow, feels like the dark ages with dial-up......
    I am using a BT hub 3, nothing else has changed in my PC set-up.  This is really frustrating, especically as playing on-line games like LOTRO is virually impossible due to lag etc....
    I have tried searching this forum, and have checked my ADSL settings and BT speedchecker, results below.....
    Any ideas guys?
    Thanks....
  • Slow Infinity speed
    I had BT Infinity (option 2) installed May 1st 2012. After waiting 10 days for speed to settle down, I checked my speed yesterday & today with the bt speedtester & speedtest.net & results are showing as an average 16 download & 4.50 upload.
     I did everything that BT advised via their 'How can i test my BT Infinity speed?' site ( checking connections, disabling anti-virus etc), as well as resetting the modem & hub, but results still showing average speed as mentioned above.
    I have run a PC Healthcheck via 'BT broadband desktop help' on my PC which is only a few months old & is running a wired connection to the hub, but I still have these very low speeds.
    Can anyone give me any advice?
    Thanks
    Hi
     Hi Aarong,
    My estimates are 28.3 download, 5.7 upload. See results above from latest speedtest. It looks like the max acheivable speed (20Mbps) is same as previous BB package, not Infinity, even though my online bill page shows service as 'up to 76Mbps'.
  • Very slow Infinity speeds
    Hi. New non geeky member in desperation. Signed up for Bt infinity base package in Nov 2013  and was quite pleased it. I hadnt checked my speed lately although had the impression it was getting slower.So been checking over the last few days at different times and download speed has been averaging out at about 4.8 Mbps. sent BT email and had a call from help centre last night to advise trying www.speedtest.wholesale.com which I have done at various times today. I checked on both my Desktop and Laptop using cable with wireless turned off and resuults were all about the same:-
    4.92 Download
    Max achievable 5.03
    Accepable range  20Mbps-5.03Mbps
    0.74 Upload
    Upstream rate profile is 10
    My computers are both up to recommended specs. I am using a BT homehub 5,  about 1 Km from the BT exchange and 50 metres from the green cabinet.
    Having said I am no geek I would appreciate some help I could understand please.
  • Slow infinity speed since install.
    Out of interest could people post there distance from cab VS. speed.
    I had infinity option 2 installed about 3 weeks ago now. When the original open reach engineer installed the service he said that there was something not right with it, I was getting download speeds of 8 mb. He conducted internal house wiring and also tested the drop wire to the dp, same speed.
    Long story short another openreach engineer has come out today and informed me that 8mb is the correct speed and that i wouldn't achieve any more. He didnt test the speed at the pole so I have asked them to do this to see what comes back but I would be interested to know what other people are getting at around 900-1000m from the cab.
    i was orginally quoted 16.1mb i find it had to believe that half is correct...
    We're about 800m from the cabinet (I'd originally thought we were nearer to around 300-400m but google maps proved me wrong!)
    I've just upgraded to Infinity 2 today and our download speeds have increased from around 37.5 Mbps to 42.5 Mbps.
    I guess it all depends on the route the cable takes and the quality of the copper (our house is about 11 years old and so I'm guessing the BT lines are about the same age), but I would have thought you could achieve more than 8Mbps if we're getting over 40Mbps being only slightly closer to the cabinet than you.
  • Slow Infinity Speed - Could this make the Guiness ...
    I transferred from Virgin fibre to Infinity a couple of months ago - and performance has been acceptable considering the fact that I'm 5km from the exchange - 15 Mbps download 1.2 upload. However a  few days ago it dropped  to 7 Mbps and .15 (yes 0.15) A fault on the line was diagnosed - engineer worked  hard to fix it - told me the line is good however I was getting 7Mbps  and .15  - he said it may take some time to get back up to speed - when he left - 24 hours after the engineer's visit I am seeing no improvement. My mobile phone has a better upload speed
    What is the best course of action ( apart from returning to Virgin!) Is the line likely to improve - do I go back to BT and report it again - I could cut my wrists but that would spoil the carpet
    I've reset the modem and hub but there seems to be so much conflicting advice I'm not sure what to do. Advice would be gratefully accepted
    If I were you I would uninstall BT Desktop Help. It might not help your speed but it will help your computer. It is a pile of software junk that is not needed on your computer to connect to the Internet or for anything else and it can cause problems on some computers.
    Use this as your speed checker and then run the diagnostics and post back the results along with your IP profile and somebody may be able to help.
    There's definitely something amiss there Kev as your IP profile matches your sync speed.  Best to do as John has mentioned and e-mail the forum mods to see if they can have some light shed on things and hopefully get this put right for you (& the others in the same boat).
  • Slow Infinity speeds - Profile problems
    Hello All,
                I have had the Infinity package since 6/7/2011 with speeds estimated at 34 mb/s. So far the maximum I have received is 10mb/s, and only on one PC for a short time, the average being about 4-5 mb/s.
         On Saturday the 23/7/2011 I ran speed tests using http://speedtester.bt.com/, after disconnecting all but one device from the hub and was recieving about 10mbs, which was confirmed by BT over the phone. I was told that there was a problem with my profile and i was recieving the minimum speed and the profile was reset.
       So far my service has not improved, ping and speed both fluctuating wildly with the maximum i have observed to be 7mb/s average about 4.
     My phone has been getting a ping of 140 and speed around 200kps, before the reset ping was around 40 and speed 1-2 mps.
     I know it has not yet been 10 days, but i have been paying for infinity for most of a month but recieving a service that is often inferior to the regular bt broadband and the profile reset does not seem to be working and several posts that i have seen say that it should only take 3-4 days for major improvement.
     Should i wait until it has been 10 days or complain again?
    Thanks
    Jamie
          Having been contacted by the mods i have found out that the speed at the hub is around 36mb/s but that is not reaching any device not connected directly via ethernet to the hub.
     I performed some tests, for 3 of the main devices on my network. The results shown are an average of 3 consecutive test on speedtest.net and  Only the device being tested was connected to the hub at the time of the test.
      2 PC's are connected via ethernet over homeplug and are recieving low speeds. Depspite the house being only 2 years old so has new wiring  and the occasional peak in speed showing greater download rates are possible i think i am going to have to abandon them.
     The wireless connection desite having all g+ devices are also recieving low speeds, lower than on the previous hub before infinity so i do not think the hubs wireless is suitable either
     As BT say that thier responsibility only extends to getting speed to the hub not further my plan is to buy a wireless N router and connect it via direct ethernet to the hub then connect the PC's and laptop to the external router with wireless N adaptors. Any other devices such as phones/ non-N adaptors  would connect wirelessly to the hub.
     Does anybody know if this will work and have any recomendations on the routers?
    Thanks
    I logged this with BT technical support on the 16th August and so far have received no callbacks when promised (current count of nonexistant callbacks is 8 ) and zero updates as to the possible cause of the fault or any plan to resolve it. I've been told that it is with the Networks, Investigation, Management and Wholesale teams but noone will actually tell me whats going on.
    I'm posting this here and will contact one of the mods to see if theres anything they can do to help. Although if i'm honest I think I may be finished as a BT customer and will pay my way out of the contract and go elsewhere despite being 2 months into an 18 month contract.
    Shocking service, amazing product (when it's working)
    I would give the Mods time to resolve the problem, meanwhile have a look (link removed) for your legal rights which would mean you would not have to pay to get out of your contract.
  • Really Slow Upload Speed
    Hi there,
    My upload speed has significantly dropped by alot, i heard that it is supposed to be about 10% of your download speed? For example mine was 3.22Mb/s download but my upload speed is at 0.03Mb/s, I have changed my channel but nothing has happened. The main sort of lagg that i get is on the xbox, and when my mum turns her computer on it gets even worse. Is there anything I can do to boost the upload speed? If you could help that would be great.
    http://www.speedtest.net/result/762176977.png
    Thanks Carl.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.
    if your mums pc was wireless then the problem wouldn happen, or if you were bothe wired it wouldnt happen however when the wifi and wired connections work they share the available connectivity in half between them then spread it further between each device.
    best option would be either an expensive change of equipment or a very cheap nice long ethernet cable for the xbox to stop it happening
