Really slow internet

I just bought my Airport express, and I have set it up and all.. The light is green, but the internet *****(!) Mail wont connect to it at all, and Firefox use forever to download a site, but it's crap and with no pictures..
I only have a cable connected to the wall (no extra modem or anything), and I live in a Student Housing Australia apartment, and I connect to the internet with a PPPoE account.
thanks,
Marianne

Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I'd check the signal and noise values that your MacBook Pro is seeing, as described in this post:

It's possible that in a student housing area there are a lot of networks that interfere with each other.

Take it somewhere that has better broadband. The best you can do sometimes is invest in new modem that works with your system instead of the rental etc in most cases.
    Do a Safe Boot.
Make sure your firewall is set properly. Don't use 3rd party. AV software can get in the way.
Make sure you are getting the service and a clean strong modem signal - slow is one thing but if it drops off and can't maintain a connection you have hardware issues, not software - and upgrade to a new OS doesn't tend to improve, it may even not work with older networking equipment once you do get it.
I agree and think electronic only goes too far. And when you do get it: burn the package and manually set it aside first before running the intaller! make a flash memory installer, put it on DVDs too.

  • Really slow internet uploads and images not showing

I have tried "Disk Repair" and also did a "Reset Safari". Internet pages are REALLY slow to load and all images on websites are little blue boxes with a "?" in it. My internet connection is spotless, all this started right after I dowloaded OS X Mavericks. Please help!

For images. With Safari open, if you see Develop in the menu bar top of your screen between Bookmarks and Window click Develop. If Disable Images is checked, click there one time to uncheck.
You can also  empty the cache from the Develop menu. Develop > Empty Caches
Then quit and relaunch Safari to test to see if images load and that pages load faster.

  • REALLY Slow Internet Loading--Is there a way to make it faster?

I bought a new Macbook 3 weeks ago at the Apple store. I am a long-time pc user who took the Apple plunge mostly because I am sick of getting viruses all the time. Unfortunately, I am pretty disappointed with the speed of the Internet and REALLY slow loading of websites--especially business websites (cnn.com, WAMU, Citibank, WSJ, etc.) It's not my wireless internet connection because I did a side-by-side test. I sat on my couch with my 4 year old Dell pc and the new Macbook and went to the same websites at exactly the same time. My old Dell was always faster loading each website and in some business-related or video-related sites, about 35-55 seconds faster. Is there anyway to make the apple load websites faster or is slow internet just the price I have to pay to be virus-free? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Well here are some things for you.
the macbook has a 2.4 and 5 GHz wifi module. If you have a N wifi router, it may have the ability to process at the 5 GHz range. Un fortunately most receivers are operating in the 2.4 GHz range.
My recommendation is to lock your access point to either 2.4 if it is a draft N spec or G only if a B/G AP.
If you are using security to lock down your access point and are using WPA or WPA2, set the encryption to AES only.
If you have a draft N AP also set the channel width to 20/40
If you have draft N ad set it to 2.4 you will only get 130 Mb speeds on the Macbook. that is the limitation of not using 5 GHz
Check the forums of your AP manufacturer for known issues and make sure your firmware is up to date.
There is nothing inherent with Macs that make the internet slower. They use the same technology as everyone else. The issue is with how you have your AP set and how the adapter in the MB is setup.
I am going to go out on a limb and assume you do not understand the differences in the settings, frequencies, etc of wireless so it might do you good to learn a bit about it first so you better understand how to get the most out of your equipment. I hope what I have posted gets you started int he right direction

  • Really slow internet with OSX10.4 Server

We have a small network with a dual2ghzG5, 3 iMacG5s, 4 or 5 iBookG4s and about 3 or 4 miscellaneous PCs. We installed TigerServer on one iMacG5, and the PC's worked much better accessing the terabyte firewire RAID on that server iMac, but internet access really slowed down almost to a standstill.
We don't have any IT type geeks here, just a couple old time Mac users and a couple recent switchers. Is there any good resource for step-by-step How-to for setting this server up? We've looked on the internet, but not long or hard enough to find anything very helpful.
    Any help will be appreciated,
    1GhzPBG4-17,1.5 G RAM, 933iBook G4,1.12G RAM, iMacDV, 320MB   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   128k Mac with 20mhz Gemini030

Why would this effect your Internet connection speed, at all ?
You'll do far better to continue to use your standalone hardware Router, rather than trying to do NAT with your server, if that's what you've done.

  • Brand new macbook with really slow internet all of a sudden? I have etrecheck please help!

    Hey everyone,
My macbook air is just over a month old and has been working great until this week.
    Weird things...
Firstly. I turned it on one day and it came up with an error saying my ip adress has been used by another device
Secondly. Random screen saver comes on when i have not changed any settings
FInally. My internet is ridiculously slow. The internet pages need to be refreshed constantly and half the time load after 10 mins or not at all.
My wifi is connected to my iphone which i have been using as internet as the speeds on that are not affectd.
I change my DNS to 8.8.8.8 and did not allow ipv6 with a restart and cleared cache like other forums recommended. Still did nothing but here is an etrecheck report.

  • Airport Express really slow internet

Hi I have a Airport Express plugged into a ADSL modem, everything has been fabulous. However recently I have noticed a lag in loading pages and a general sluggish behavior. Initially I thought it was the connections however through a process of elimination I have located it as a Airport Express problem.
I have reset it hard, soft & factory it is recognised by my Macbook ok but and my printer works fine however the internet continues to lag and sometimes drops off completley.
Any ideas? Or do things like this just go kaput after a year?

I've had mine for five years and, other than the initial setup, it has been a real workhorse. Try changing the channel on your AX to 11 as you might be getting interference from your neighbours.

  • Trial Downloaded on Other Computer because of slow internet.

I have really slow internet here so the download of Photoshop CS6 Trial would take 12 hours so I downloaded it at someone elses house onto a jump drive.  I then copied the file to my desktop and downloaded the Installer/Downloader from the website.  The Installer however does not recognize that I have already downloaded the program and is attempting to download it again.  Is there any way to install it?  I have the full photoshop trial folder and the downloader.
    Thanks

Yes please launch the installer which you downloaded to your USB drive.

  • Slow Internet connection sharing on Macbook Pro

    Hi all,
I am experiencing really slow internet connection sharing via the airport from a second machine directly. I can access the internet or web pages with excellent reliability however the download/upload speed is 20KB/s at best. If I use the Macbook Pro itself I can get up to 250KB/sec. I read that this seems to be common problem with Snow Leopard. Can someone shed some light on this?
    Thanks

Hi, please can somebody help. I have a MacBook Pro and i am connecting to a windows 2003 server using microsoft remote desktop connection. I need to print on the printer connected to my mac. How do I get windows to see the printer that is connected to my Mac?
It looks like you have to have a postscript printer (i.e. a laser printer). I have been trying to solve this problem for some time with no luck so far.

My internet was pretty fast, and now it's really slow, i don't know if it's because of my wifi or what. But i had downloaded lots of tv show videos and I am thinking that it's happened because of that. But i think if i do delete the videos for good, my internet would still stay the same. So i think it wont make a difference if i do delete it, should i or not? and what should i do about my internet??
    It's only two months old!!!

Care to share which OS you are using?
How large is you HD and how much space do you have left?
Check w/your ISP.  Make sure the problem is not on their end.

  • My internet is really slow

Hello, Since yesterday my Internet connection has been really slow. I have changed the channel and checked my phone line and nothing seems to be wrong except some websites don't load or load really slow its should be much faster.  STATS Router StatisticsSystem Up Time: 04:14:24PortStatusTxPktsRxPktsCollision PktsTx b/sRx b/sUp TimeWANPPPoA62799883765700004:12:30LANUp79721183100004:14:24WLANUp86097964728200004:14:24Broadband LinkDownstreamUpstreamConnection Speed4094 kbps799 kbpsLine Attenuation52.5 dB33.4 dBNoise Margin3.4 dB12.12 dB

Based on your attenuation figure there is nothing you can do to increase your speed(unless you can upgrade to Fibre) as your just to far from the exchange your attenuation figure puts your distance at roughly 3.8km(cable wise).
It is possible that a line fault or equipment fault is causing a false figure.
Do you have any crackling, hissing, ticking or other noise on your line when amking or reciving calls?
Are you connected to the Master socket?
Have you tried using the Test Socket(located behind the Master socket faceplate)?
Are you using any extension leads to connect to the socket?
