Really slow Safari

So, having searched most if not all the info here, all the things I've done (Onyx, basic maintinence, resetting all that could be reset), the dang thing is as slow as ever. I also made a new identity and of course, THAT is fast as all get-out.
Should I just back everything up and reformat? That'll be fun...
Thanks, JT
emac   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

Three steps you can take::
Move the Icon folder in your Safari folder (User Library) to the trash. This resets the favicon file (small icons in the Address Bar) to zero, and you start building over. This folder can become rather large or corrupted, slowing Safari down in the process. If you don't want favicons appearing you can also access the folder in your Finder, call up the info panel (highlight folder, then apple key + I), change the preferences to read only and lock the folder. This will shut off the favicons.
Second, same Library>Caches - move the Safari folder to the trash. Safari will automatically create a new one.
Third - Safari Preferences>Autofill - this feature can slow down Safari as it increases in size. Good to select the edit key next to any of the 3 options offered, and remove items no longer necessary.
Give these a try and post back with results.
The latest version of Safari for Panther is available with the 10.3.9 combined update. If you upgrade, make sure you "repair permissions" via Disk Utility when the install/restart is completed.

  • Safari being REALLY slow or sometimes "Cannot find server"! HELP!

Right, i have the new 'Safari 4' but its being really slow.
When trying to load up webpages, it sometimes takes AGES to load a page, or sometimes it even comes up with the message 'Safari cannot find the server'.
I have 'LittleSnitch' installed so I can see when Safari is using the internet to either upload or download information and most of the time, Safari is sat there doing nothing and not downloading any information...
I have reset Safari to no avail!
    Why might this be happening?

    'Safari cannot find the server'
Generally refers to a DNS problem.
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.

  • Safari has got really slow..

    Hi
Over the past few weeks I've noticed Safari (2.0.4) has got really slow at both finding and loading web pages.
I know it's not my connection as when I open the same page in Flock or FF it's really fast.
I've emptied Safari's cache but it's made no difference.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi Roger
Over the past few weeks I've noticed Safari (2.0.4) has got really slow at both finding and loading web pages.
I know it's not my connection as when I open the same page in Flock or FF it's really fast.
I've emptied Safari's cache but it's made no difference.
Here's a list of basics I recommend when Safari slows down:
    1. Empty your cache & History settings via the Safari menu
    2. Trash your Icons Folder:
     HD/Users/Home/Your_Name/Library/Safari/Icons
    * Restart Safari and a new folder will be automatically regenerated.
    3. Shut down your computer . . . unplug the computer, modem, and router, if you have one. Also the power to support the modem. Let everything sit for 2-3 minutes. Plug everything back in, start up your modem & router, then restart your computer.
For slow opening, I'd recommend checking your Font Book application for duplicate fonts (the ones with the little bullets next to them). If you find any, select them one at a time, go up to the Edit menu, and click on "Resolve Duplicates.
** I see that you are using a Powerbook. When you shut it down overnights than run MacJanitor. This a special script developed for Powerbook, iBook, Laptop etc ... users.

This are the easiest things to start with

  • Hey, does anyone else see that Safari is REALLY slow today?

Say, does anyone else see that Safari is REALLY slow today?

    Jonathan...
    No problem with Safari here.
Empty your Safari cache and try resetting Safari.
Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down including browsers.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.

  • Safari is really slow in my mini Mac

    Hi!
I hope somebody may help me figure out what i can do with my computer.
    - It is a mini Mac
    - OS X Version 10.9.2
    - Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    - Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 (what ever that may mean!)
I have had it for almost 1.5 years, and for almost one year, Safari gets really slow, sometimes. Sometimes it works great, as if nothing, and sometimes it is so slow i cannot open any website at all.
Emails download fine, and other programms download fine at the same time that safari is not working, so i dont think it is the internet. Also, other devises using the same internet work fine.
Google chrome works fine, but i dont like using it because it takes too much RAM in the long term, and i have problems with Google Chrome in some websites like my bank. Firefox also works normally fine, but i also prefer the say Safari works (when it works)
I have checked the Start up. There is no programme running in when automatically when i Log in my account.
I have checked the Activity Monitor, and even though it is running a lot of programms that i dont really know, none of them is over 0%. And right now only Safari and Google Chrome are running over 2%. Google Chrome sometimes is taking over 30% CPU and hte Google Chrome Helper also, but normaly it takes less than 5%. Safari says many times, but they are all around 2%.
I have read that the "kernel_task" (which i also dont know what it is) takes a lot of Memory RAM. In my computer it is using around 400 MB, which is 5 times more than the programme following it which is Safari with 80Mb. Seems a bit much, it i doubt that it is what is really slowing down the computer.
    Could it be a virus?
Hoping that somebody may help. Thank you in advance!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive (the drive itself, not the volume icons below it.) Is the SMART status "Verified?" If not, replace the drive immediately. If the status is "Verified," the drive may still be failing. Back up all data, if you haven't already done so. Reinstall Mac OS X, then run Software Update. Test with all wired peripherals disconnected. If it's still slow, you have a hardware problem.

I noticed Safari 7.0.3 getting really slow. I have a rMBP 15" with 2.6 GHz, 16GB RAM, SSD, yada yada, so I know the HW is up to spec. OS X 10.9.2 (Mavericks)

I disabled the power save feature for plug ins. Cleared the caches (under develop menu). Also Remove All Website data under privacy settings. None produced any real improvment.
I then found a link that showed to disable DNS prefetching, which seems to make Safari usable again (although still slower than the other browsers).

To be honest this is becoming very sloppy on Apple's part, as not too long ago I had to research here to find a method to speed up browsing in Finder as well. Is Apple becoming Microsoft? (sorry couldn't resist, just getting annoyed that simple items are becoming a hassle on OS X).
