Really slow to open files on new iMac

Hi
I've have a new 3.06Mhz 27" iMac (8gb RAM) at work. It's painfully slow when either opening or saving files - ie something requiring the file dialogue box.
Adobe CS4 being the worst with Dreamweaver & Photoshop taking between 7 and 10 seconds for the dialogue box to open and with Preview or Firefox it's around 5 seconds. This is really annoying and disruptive to work flow. My 3 yr old iMac at home is way faster...
Any ideas?
I regularly repair permissions - I do have an external drive plugged in for Time Machine...

Hi, as a suggestion I would run Onyx:- http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/onyx.html
Then I would go the SMC route, you will need to determine the correct SMC procedure for your model.
I would also check/reset the Startup Disc (System Preferences)
Did you add the extra RAM or was it factory fitted? Have you run TechTool?
Are the Apps running via Rosetta?...L

  • EXTREMELY slow to open files - Illustrator CC 2014!

    Hi,
I just updated from Maverick to Yosemite 10.10.1
See my system config on this monosnap link:
    http://take.ms/2CAxh
I have installed the latest Illustrator CC - 18.1.1
    See monosnap link:
    http://take.ms/lgqj0
I have a big problem everytime I try to open a file from within Illustrator CC!
When try to open a new folder (with few or meny files) it TAKES FOREVER for Illustrator to render the files in the folder. (Aprox 2-5 minutes...).
Everything on the machine freezes - it's like a big hang! - but after the loooong wait the hang kind of releases and I can see all files in the folder and can open and go on with the job...
When I do exactly the same but from within Photoshop CC (2014.2.2) everything works smooth, quick and fine!
I have turned of Yosemite transparance, checked that I have Verdana installed.
    What more can I do???
Please help - this problem is extremely tedious to have!

    Hi Evil Lair Bear,
have You find a solution and solved the problem (besides the embedding idea)?
I still have the same problem = extreeemly slow to open files from within Illustrator 18.1.1
We have tons of old illustrator files dating back so far as Illustrator 3.2...
It's impossible fur us at the studio to reopen all old files and embedding pics...
Now we alla have to have to do the annoying work around "find and open the files in finder"...
    This is driving me nuts...
Any help would be magic! ;-)

  • Can't open iTunes on new iMac

After migrating all my documents from a ProMac to an iMac I can't open iTunes in new iMac.  "iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes."  When I select "Download iTunes" I get "No Updates available" and an unknown error (-42408)

Since it's brand new I'd call AppleCare and let them walk you through it. They will have you try things and you can give immediate feedback and they will take you to the next step. That would take us too long here. Apple's service is very good.

  • Opening appleworks label file in new imac,

My christmas card labels were created in appleworks labels, now there is no way to open the cwk label file in my new imac. I don't have access to my appleworks in my old computer, can someone help!!!

    Hi hcz,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Appleworks forum.
Your labels will be in an AppleWorks 6 database file, a file format that can be opened only by AppleWorks 6. There are a couple of routes open to you:
    1.
Get a new AppleWorks 6 installation disk and install the application from that.
Cautions: The installer on the disk must be the OS X version. Early versions of AppleWorks 6 contained both the Classic and OS X versions of AppleWorks, but the installer ran only in OS 9 and earlier. Hardcore Mac had installation disks for AppleWorks 6.2.4, with a Mac OS X installer application when I last checked.
    2.
Find someone who has AppleWorks 6 installed, and get the labels printed (to labels or to a pdf file, from which you can print) and/or get the file converted to a format which you can open with your current spreadsheet program. Suggested formats would be tab delimited text (.txt) or MS Excel (.xls). The text file can be opened into any text editor, then copied and pasted into pretty much any spreadsheet. Most spreadsheets will also open an Excel formatted file.
If you wish, you may send the file to me. I'll return a pdf, a text file and an excel formatted file, and trash the original. If you choose to do this, you'll find my address by clicking my name (in blue0 to the left of this message. Please place "AppleWorks Labels" in the subject line of your message.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Can not open .pages file on new iMac Mavericks

Cannot open a .pages file on 2014 iMac with Mavericks. Pages v 5.2.2  says there is a newer version but I cannot upgrade Pages either. Thoughts?

    Hi katmcg,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know that situations that keep you from opening documents can be very frustrating. The new version of Pages that is being referred to is Pages 5.5 and is available with Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite.

  • Iwork apps won't open any files on new iMac

just got my new imac. my original iwork purchase was from a CD, so i reinstalled it on the new mac from the original disc, did all the updates, and now can only create new documents. none of the apps will open existing iwork or microsoft documents. it still works on my old computer.
in numbers, i get the error message "The document - - - could not be opened."
in pages and keynote, i get the error message "An unexpected error has occurred. Please quit and reopen Keynote."
since i didn't purchase via the app store, i can't update from there, so i went to apple's site for the latest updates. i believe i'm up to date:
    numbers '09, v 2.3
    pages v 4.3
    keynote v 5.3
any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks,
    susan

    update :
after numerous calls and efforts with apple care, i decided to try purchasing the app directly from the app store (which i was reluctant to do since i already owned the iworks '09 disk). and it worked. so i'm out $40 (didn't buy keynote yet). but at least i have something that works. and i didn't need to reinstall the  OS like the apple care people wanted to try...
hope this helps others in the same boat.

  • Lion Preview and Textedit very slow when opening files from Leopard Server

My small office (about 10 users) recently upgraded our iMac's, Mac Mini's, and Macbook Pro's.  We are experiencing a big problem with Preview opening super slow (1-2 minutes) when trying to open JPG's, PDF's, etc from our 10.5.8 Leopard Server.  We have deleted numerous plist files related to Preview, completely deleted Preview.app from one iMac and reinstalled it via Pacifist and still no change in performance.  One of the new iMac's does open much faster than the others, but we cannot figure out why this one machine works well and the others don't.
All machines are showing the below error (dozens of times) in Console when trying to open files directly from the server...
    sandboxd:  ([###])  Preview(###) deny system-fsctl
We have searched the internet for a solution but have not come up with anything that works.  This problem exists with Textedit as well.  We did try opening a file from one Lion machine to the other and it opened very fast.  We also can open files very quickly from older 10.4.11 Tiger machines directly from the server.  So the best we can determine right now is Lion and Leopard Server are not playing nicely together.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have pasted (one of) the console log files below for reference.

"Enable Related Files" isn't the fix for this issue. It's slightly different - I wanted to still load related files, but only the ones local to the file I was editing.
The fix was to use DW's Resolve To IP Address feature. It required adding a registry value - it fixed the issue straight away

  • Can I transfer my iWeb files to new iMac running Yosemite

I have recently purchased a new iMac running Yosemite 10.10.2. I have a set of iWeb files that I was working on but had not yet published as a website on my old iMac which is running OS X 10.5.8. Is it possible to transfer these files to the new mac? I can't find any iWork or iLife files in the Applications folder on my new mac.

Yes, you can transfer the files, but you will be unable to open them, because as you have found, new Macs have not shipped with iWeb installed on them for a long time now - iWeb as you may or may not know is very old software now that has not been sold or supported by Apple for at least 3 years.
The only other way that you will be able to get iWeb onto your new Mac is buy a copy of iLife 11 or iLife 09, both of which contained the final version of iWeb - which is iWeb 09.  You would need to purchase this from Amazon.  You could try an old installation CD that came with your other Mac if you still have it and you could try installing iWeb onto your new iMac from that, but if it does not work, then you'll have to buy a copy of iLife 11 or 09 from Amazon.
Your other alternatives of course are to find some new web creation software that is supported or you continue to use iWeb on your old Mac and just update and publish your sites from that machine.
In the end though, it might just be easier to bite the bullet and move onto some new software and re-build you site with that.
Software that is worth taking a look at is RapidWeaver, Sandvox, Freeway Pro/Express, WebAcappella 4, Flux V and EverWeb.  Then don't forget all the online website builders that you have, that are slightly different, such as WordPress.com, Wix.com and others.
Other alternatives are then the Content Management Systems such as Drupal, Joomla and WordPress.org.
I would suggest that you take a look at EverWeb first though - it is very much like the iWeb interface and can do a lot more than iWeb could out of the box, such as contact forms included, SEO included, drop down menus, master pages, support for PayPal with widgets and lots more.
Take and look and you can download a trial version before you buy.
There are lots of different options available to you, but ultimately, if you want to continue using iWeb on your new Mac, then you'll have to buy iLife form Amazon.  Time to move on perhaps?!!

  • How can I transfer older Claris Works and AppleWorks files to new iMac.  I use Pages, and MacWord, Excel, etc. as well.

    March 20, 2013
I have a new iMac using Pages and Microsoft Word, Excel, etc. for mac.  I'd like to transfer older ClarisWorks and AppleWorks files to my new computer.  Can this be done?

Additionally, Numbers can read/open spreadsheets. However, anything done in the drawing/painting part cannot be read by any application - you would have to export those (on the old machine) as a .jpg or pdf. You could then open them, but no longer edit or change the content.

  • EA2 right click to open SQL file/opening file creates new connection

    EA2, win XP pro, sp2
    1. Right click to open an existing SQL file missing from the context menu.
    2. Even after I set my default path to look for scripts, it opens in Documents and Settings\USERID\Application Data\SQL Developer
    3. When I open a new file or script, it creates a new tab in which I have to pick the connection. In 1.2, it used the connection of the tab I was in. Am I missing a setting for this?

1 I suspect the Open File item might be missing because it is integrated with version control and they have left that outUse the main toolbar / menubar Open. Ctrl-O also works.
The local context menu "Open" was removed not due to version control but to reduce the clutter on worksheet's toolbar & menubar.
Though it might have been convenient, I think when you get used to, you'll appreciate that we want to save the space for other really context sensitive menu's for worksheet.

  • Photoshop CS3 slow to open files

I have looked at all the answers i can find so far on this and other forums, but have not yet been able to effect a solution, so please bear with me, and hopefully someone can assist further.
The problem is that opening files is painfully slow - having read about the issue with network printers (which I don't have) I have deleted everything listed under printers and re-installed the only printer that I have (which is locally attached via USB, but I deleted it in case Adobe thought is was a network printer).
I have tried to create a generic printer (as recommended by Mr Joslin to jangel2 http://forums.adobe.com/message/2657130#2657130), but the installation failed and no additional printers were visible in control panel/printers.
I am running Windows 7 on a Dell desktop, with plenty of memory etc.
I have a number of external hard drives, and have turned all these on so Photoshop can find them in case it's looking, but this made no difference.
I am at a loss and hope someone can help.
    Many thanks
    Lizzie

Hi All, Apologies for the radio silence and many thanks for your responses.
A techy friend of mine came round and changed loads of settings, restored to a previous point (prior to the windows upgrade) to no avail, and decided that the whole system needed rebuilding. Rather dejected, we searched the internet once more for possible solutions (this time under the heading "slow printing from Photoshop Epson" - although it was not the printing per se that was slow, just the loading of the file).
This is the fix that we found: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/forum/index.php?action=printpage;topic=48960.0
The relevant text from the forum (in case the link doesnt work) is:
"I spoke with both Photoshop and Epson support guys and was able to come up with a fix (from Epson).  The fix involved deleting a hidden file in a hidden folder called Program Data on the C:\ drive.  The file had an extension of .AUD and was 40 megabytes in size. It was the only file with the .aud extension. Once I deleted that file, all of my problems went away.  The Epson support guy said that this file has caused problems in the past.  He thinks that the file is generated by the system and just keeps getting larger and larger until everything grinds to a halt.  To access hidden folders in Windows Explorer, click on the Tools tab, click on Folder options,  click on View.  Under the heading "Hidden Folders and files" click on  "Show Hidden Folders and files". You will then be able to access the folder "Program Data".  In the folder called "Program Data" you will find a folder titled "Epson".  In the Epson folder is a folder called "Printer".  In the printer folder is the file (In my case anyway) called "EPAUDF01.AUD.  When I deleted the file (that had swollen to 40 megabytes), the system (or the Epson Printer program... I'm not sure which), generated a new file that was 2 kilobytes in size, after I had restarted my machine.  I keep monitoring the file to see if it changes size, but so far it hasn't."
Having deleted the file *.AUD, Photoshop loaded images as fast as lightning.
Thought this would be of use to you all, and thank you once again.

  • Why can't I open iTunes on new iMac?

My wife has a brand new iMac running OS X Lion. She already has an iTunes account which she accesses on a year old iPad. She can not access her iTunes library or even get the page to open on her iMac. Going to Finder - Applications, shows iTunes as one of her apps but it will not open. The iTunes icon is on her task bar but all it does is bounce when clicked on. The bar at the top of the window has switched to itunes ( showing controls- File, View, Edit etc) but no page opens.  We are both newbies, are we missing something obvious?

Since it's brand new I'd call AppleCare and let them walk you through it. They will have you try things and you can give immediate feedback and they will take you to the next step. That would take us too long here. Apple's service is very good.

The only other factor is the performance of Seagate drives in Mac Pro. Some report slow random small file reads etc. Later units (Mac Pro) may have an improved SATA chipset, but maybe not everyone. Great drive for large file sustained I/O though.
For me, I can't cut my attachment to WD 10K Raptors. Excellent boot drive and where you keep the OS and applications to 75GB or so (and keep data files away from your boot drive!)
Optimizing disk drives for CS2 helps. Dedicated boot drive, separate fast drive for scratch, and another for data and media.
The Mac Pro takes off working with large files where it helps more to have large amount of RAM used for caching.
