  • Firefox slow wireless but fast wired. No issues running IE wireless. Tried system restore, fact. reset, turned off accl, disabled addons, run in safe mode.....

So i have an HP e118dx running on windows 8.1 with very little software on it. Currently running FF 37.0.1 and in wireless mode it always hangs up, runs slow, or times out. When plugged in it runs just fine. Can get on net using IE via wireless and no issues. So it seems to be something specific to FF on the wireless side. Thought it might have been my wireless card but running IE just fine seems to rule that out.
Have already tried system restore a few times, factory reset, turn off hardware accel., run in safe mode(FF), disabled add ons and nothing seems to help. If i have tabs open while wired, then go wireless and refresh the pages or browse on the already open pages i tend to get a couple minutes of trouble free experience before it slows to a halt again.
To recap....FF on wireless=slow and wired=fast. No difference when using IE wireless---always fast.

Not sure what you mean by # of connections being made. Not sure if that means tabs open, or folks using the actual wireless network. A while back when i was going through this with the isp i got a crash coarse on how to go into the modem and check a bunch of different stuff, as well as reset things. When looking in there only 1 or 2 computers showed on the network. The network is password protected......i guess protected only to the extent that a pswrd can. Not certain if someone nefariously connected somehow.....didn't show up when looking for users on the network though.
The first bullet point......Not sure how to do any of that so i'd say no.
Second bullet point......Yes, did lots of clearing temp files, caches, history, etc. along with systems restores and factory resets. although not exactly sure what you mean by dns cache. Might have done this but don't recall specifically seeing that.
Third bullet point.....It doesn't make any difference on this end whether its on no proxy, auto proxy, manual proxy. While i have no idea what all this stuff does/affects performance i played with it on all different settings and nothing changed here. Put it back to no proxy.
The thing is even when my wireless FF is acting up other devices in the home can be on the wireless with no issues. Think the other devices are using Chrome and some phone wifi hookup. Keep in mind if i switch to IE on the same device with FF windows open the IE will run just fine. At any given time there should only be 1-4 devices on the network so i'm guessing that shouldn't overload anything. Besides none of the other devices ever seem to come into this issue.
There always seems to be some issue that pops up after updates. Can't ever just leave working things alone.

  • Slow wireless but fast wired

Hi all, hopefully someone can help.
I have been getting lower speeds on my laptop for a few weeks now.  I'm getting 50+mb into the house but only max 15mb to the laptop and my phone. It often drops down to below 10 and sometimes 2!
Ive reset the modem and the infinity box on many occasions which helps get the speed back up to 13-15 when it's dropped to 2mb.  I've re-installed the bt software and have power cycled everything with no success.
I only recently tried the wited connection and it gets 50+mb.
I wondered if it was my wireless card which is an atheros and my laptop is an i5 acer so fairly new.  I've just ordered a wirless dongle to see if it helps.  The current atheros card does not seem to support and 'n' connection.
I've installed and run inssider and the best link score I can get is around 55-65.  I have no idea how to understand the inssider graph but guess this is not great.
I would really appreciate some advice.  Oh I am considering buying a home hub 4.0 as I am using the 3.0 version.
    Many thanks
    Steve

Don't keep resetting the modem. This could cause the DLM (Dynamic Line Management) to interpret this as a faulty line and lower your speeds.
Wireless speed will usually be slower than a wired connection. If you are getting the same sort of wireless speed on both your phone and your laptop this would tend to rule out the wireless card on your laptop.
It could be that if you turned off the smart wireless on the home hub and select a fixed channel it would improve.
As you have already downloaded inSSider you need to run it and look for the channel that has the least amount of networks on it. Once you have found this you need to set the homehub to that channel.
See link how to change channel
    http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/14094/~/how-do-i-change-the-wireless-channel-on-my-bt...
You may find an improvement on your laptop with a wireless dongle but this won't help your phone connection. Have a good read through the forum about the wireless performance of the HH4 before you decide to buy one. You may be better to buy another make of router.

  • I cant connect to my router wirelessly but I can connect...

I cant connect to my router wirelessly but I can connect directly, Is there anything I can do about this?

does the wired computer get an ip address from the router ?? check whether it pings the router's ip add ( default ip add - 192.168.1.1 )

  • My time capsule seemed to have given up so I have just got a net gear router, I have no problem connecting  wirelessly but when I connect an Ethernet cable it says it's connected but pages will not load

Do a factory reset .. nothing will be deleted from your backups and you will be able to get access to them again.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

  • Fast wired connection, but slow wifi

Hi, I can get around 60mbps on my wired connection from my desktop but on wifi I can only get around 2-3mbps.  However if I reset the home hub or sometimes if I change the channel (currently it's on channel 9) then I can get around 50mbps on wifi but over time (perhaps a day or two) it'll slow down to 2-3 again.
Strangely upload isn't affected by this - only download.
The only devices connected via wifi are my android phone and my ipad so it's not a case of them slowing it down.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Gregor

    which router are you using?
you can try downloading inssider3 (istumbler if MAC) and then run it. This will show the broadcasting networks round about you and their channels including your own. If you then enter your router and change your wireless channel to a free or less congested channel.
    inssider3.1.2.1

  • Slow wireless conection but excellent wired connection, anyone knows why?

Hi everyone. Here is the issue, I connect my MB Pro wireless to my DLINK DIR-655 router. I have a 10Mb Internet connection. Go to speedtest.net and do 5 tests. First test = more than 9.80+Mb
Second to Fith tests = between 1.7Mb and 2.9Mb
After that the connection just maintains slow around the 2Mb.
I disable the Airport Card and then plug in a CAT5 that is connected to the same router. Close the browser and open it again. Go to speedtest.net and do 5 tests. ALL OF THEM 9.9+Mb
Not happy with this I decided to bypass the DLINK router and still use CAT5 but connected directly to the cable modem. Turn off then back on the modem, went to speedtest.net to repeat the process but this time I did 10 tests. ALL OF THEM 9.95+Mb.
All tests were done one after another, example, test 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
No other software was running doing downloads or any kind of browsing besides Firefox using speedtest.net.
So, my question is, what is wrong here??? Is anybody else having this issue or better yet been able to resolve it? Thanks for any help.

Exact same issue with me. Wireless on MBP is slow (under Mac OS and Windows) Ethernet connection is fast.
iPhone connects to wireless and gets about 10Mbps. MBP connects and gets Less than 1Mbps.
I am using DIR-628 router. Someone mentioned switching the router to G only. No mixed mode to fix this. Didnt try this yet as brother is on the internet.

  • Really slow wireless connection

Ive had my Macbook Pro for almost three years and have never had any wireless connection problems. However in the last couple months, my internet shows full connection to my Belkin wireless but Safari loads the pages extremely slow if at all. My iphone works great connected to our wireless, and our PC desktop does as well. I also took my Macbook to Starbucks to try their wi-fi and it works perfectly there. I would really love to be able to fix it at home instead of having to take it in! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi J,
Open System Preferences > Network > select AirPort > click on Advanced > TCP/IP > Configure IPv6 > Off > OK > Apply > Turn AirPort Off > Turn AirPort On
    Open System Preferences > Network > select Ethernet > click on Advanced > TCP/IP > Configure IPv6 > Off > OK > Apply
(FOR LION: If you can’t see an option to turn ipv6 off, set it to link-local only.)

My ipad is running really slow, and it will not let me connect to iTunes or App Store, but have another iPad in house which is working fine I,please help

Try a hard reset by pressing the Home button and Wake / Sleep button at the same time, keep them both pressed until the Apple Logo appears on the screen.
This does not lose any data on your iPad.

  • How do I disconnect from Wireless to use wired connection?

Hi - I'm new to this and I apologize if this question is ridiculously easy.
I am using a cable modem in which I have plugged my WRT160Nv2 wireless router. I am supporting three computers here in my home; my laptop (both wired and wireless), my daughters laptop (wireless only), and my desktop (wired only).
Everything works great and I have to give all the credit to CISCO and the excellent software which automatically solves every connection problem that comes up.
My laptop and desktop are connected to the wireless router via cable.
My question is strictly about my laptop. When I leave my office in the house and go into another room, I establish the wireless connection. Now I am back in my home office room, I want to use my wired connection. How do I do this? Do I need to disable my wireless connection so that my wired connection takes over? Again, I do have my laptop connected to the wireless router via cat5.
I want to do this strictly for the speed of the connection. I've read that a wired connection is double if not more in Mbps.
This laptop is running Win XP Pro, SP3.
I hope this furnishes enough info to assist in an answer.
    Thanks in advance.
    John
P.S.. I really do want to educate myself regarding the equipment I am using and not have to ask such basic questions. Are there any books or websites you can recommend that can start me out and go as technical as I choose to?

Windows by default uses the fastest connection possible. If you have a wireless and wired connection active at the same time it depends on how fast both connections are rated. Wireless connections tend to change depending on the distance. Wireless 802.11g goes up to 54 Mbit/s. Wireless 802.11n can go up to some 300 Mbit/s. Wired connections are usually either gigabit ethernet (1000 Mbit/s) or fastethernet (100 Mbit/s).
Thus, which is picked depends on your computer. You should check the connection status of both connections in the network connections control panel. It shows you the current wireless and wired speed (the latter won't change of course). Very often, the wired connection is preferred to the wireless connection. Now with 802.11n connections the wireless connection is preferred if your wired connection is only fastethernet.
As your WRT160Nv2 has only FastEthernet LAN ports you have to check how fast the wireless connection is. If you have a 802.11n wireless adapter in your laptop it may show up the wireless connection faster then 100 Mbit/s. Depending on the setting it may change occassionally between 54 Mbit/s and speeds higher then 100 Mbit/s which would lead Windows to swap connections. If you see that problem it is better to switch off the wireless in the laptop while you have a wired connection...
A wired connection is more reliable and stable then a wireless connection. With wireless you can have interference. Thus, even though a wired connection may be slower then a wireless one you may prefer to use the wired connection anyway. And some people prefer to turn off the wireless to avoid radiation.
To sum up: usually you don't have to switch off the wireless, unless you experience problems because of the mentioned changing speeds of the wireless connection. The computer will always only use one connection. Not both.

  • DexterM - Printer connected wireless but Notebook cannot connect to printer?

    Hi all,
I will be a brief and clear as possible. I really hope someone can help! thanks in advance.
DexterM, if your still arond I think maybe you would be familiar with this type of thing. I will be as concise as possible.
I incorrectly removed some HP folders in an effort to remove the bloatware. (shop and participation program etc).
Anyway, I damaged my install because Solution Center disappeared! I needed it to scan multiple page PDF docs.
I tried to uninstall and re-install the Full Software package (my printer is B110a) 10s of times. Each time the Installer showed that 'Solution center' is already installed. It was not installed.
Eventually after days of trying to fix this, I took the drastic measure of remving some HP keys from the registry. Not randomly of course, but from a solution post on this board. I only removed about 4 HP keys. I was very careful not to remove any Windows ones. (I se Win7).
So.. Solution center then installed. Hooray! Everything seemed perfect. EXCEPT....
I had removed 2 keys related to the Network. Something like NET HPz12 and something similar.
Now when I tried to connect my printer wirelessly (using the USB to wireless process) it cold not find any wifi networks even though there were several in the vicinity.
I found a solution on this forum which involved right clicking on the network.msi file and choosing uninstall, then re-installing it. This did the trick! now when I ran the "USB to Wireless" process it instantly found my wireless "your PC is connected to SSID blah blah blah, is this correct". Yes. It continued the network diagnostic but always failed at this point.
I think because some service or reg key is missing the computer cannot commnicate directly with the printer, but it can see it at http://192.18.1.2 etc via browser. so all is connected properly, but something is preventing the laptop from commnicating with the printer.
    So to recap.
Laptop works perfectly with printer via USB.
Printer is connected to my wireless without isse. I can see it at http://192.168.1.2 etc
Laptop cannot connect to printer though, and fails everytime I run the 'usb to wireless' process.
I suspect one of the NET keys I deleted frmo the reg is to blame? Or some missing windows service?
The network diagnostic utility says "network software missing, please reinstall or fix and try again". I have uninstalled and reinstalled 10s of times now. It's not putting back no the required network service/key thats missing.
Argh. please can anyone help. Someone must have been here before? I have a screen shot too of the 'USB to wireless' process failing. It shows the connection is there, but something is not right.
image 0 - the 'usb to wireless process' picks up my wireless without any problem. ok
image 1 - during the 'running diagnostic on network' part of the process it fails
image 2 - not much to go on here. I reinstalled and uninstalled 4 or 5 times already. same thing.

Nobody? Im really stuck here... Been onto support 3 times and they cannot help. I need someone with expert skills who will understand which windows service or driver or key is preventing the notebook from talking to the printer even though both are on the same network successfully. No AV or FW on the network either.

  • Cannot connect to Internet wirelessly or with wired connection

    Hi!
I have a wireless linksys router connected to a wired linksys router (for vonage). My PC is wired to the wireless router and works fine. My Powerbook G4 was working fine on the wireless network too.
Then, I decided to try to add an Airport Express just for streaming music (it is not wired to the wireless router). I have messed something up. Now, even with the AE unplugged, I can log onto the Linksys network, but the Internet connection does not work. Also, when I Turn Airport Off and wire directly into the router from my G4, I cannot use the Internet.
I've restarted everything I can think of. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Sounds like you need to restart the modem and hard reset the Linksys router which is connected to it. Then reconfigure that Linksys router and verify connection (Ethernet and/or wireless). After you get that setup you can add the other devices.

  • IOS7 update failure w/ error "Not Connected to Wireless", but I am connected- How can I update?

My iPad has the defective "gotofailure" bug in iOS7, but there is only 1 pending update which describes a completely unrelated issue.  I am connected to my Wireless LAN, and that connection works fine.  But, when I try to download and install the pending update (Which may or may not have the major security hole fixed), the update fails with the error message "not connected to wireless".  How can I get someone at Apple support to tell me how to get around this problem?
What am I supposed to do when the fix for a major bug is blocked by another (apparently minor) update?
(note:  I am over the 30 day warranty, but within the 1 year warranty.  However, Apple support wants me to pay $20 to have them tell me how to fix their defective software...
I expect that the 1 year warranty should apply to defective software, especially this major security bug!
This bug completely compromises browser and internet security... it is a HUGE deal!
    see:  http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2014/02/gotofail/   ).
This is my first Apple product since the Apple 2E.  If this is the level of customer support and warranty for defects, hardware or software, that Apple provides, it may well be my last apple product.
I have worked in customer support at another major computer company, and this type of policy is the surest way to send customers to your competitors that I know of.  Tim Cook, are you listening?
(P.S.  Don't bother trying to get the attention of any Apple Executive - they don't want to hear from customers to provide feedback on their products or policies - not by phone nor by email.)
Any workarounds for the problem or a way to update the iOS7 to fix the security hole will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi...
I think here the issue may be that the utility and the internet connection are not getting synchronised. The operating system on your computer is it win XP? If it is win xp, u can use the windows wireless software to manage to your wireless network. In order to use the windows wireless zero configuration, right click on the linksys icon at the bottom right hand corner of the task bar, select the option that says "use windows wireless ....".
The linksys icon will be grayed and windows will be managing the wireless network. Connect to your wireless network and you should be able to go online.

  • Slow wireless speed vs. wired speed WRT54G2v1 - 1/2 the rate download

I am having issues with the speed of my wireless connection relative to the wired connection via LAN.  Via LAN I can get 30-40meg download, but with wireless it is 8-15meg.  I reset the router and set it to 50meg transfer speed, but I am lost on the issue with the limited download speed via wireless.  My cable company came out and checked the modem and everything is fine there.  Any help with the optimal settings would be appreciated.

Might be time to get a new router. The WRT54G2 isn't designed for internet speeds over 20 Mbps.

  • IChat AV 4 works wireless but not wired

I've got iChat AV 4 on an iMac running Leopard. When I connect the iMac to my net with Airport, then iChat has no trouble contacting the Apple test accounts (like appleu3test03). When I connect to the net with the iMac's ethernet, then iChat AV fails to make audio or video connections (note, everything else continues to work, including Skype AV if I launch it). It complains that there was a "communication error" and it "did not receive a response" from the other side.
Both the wire and wireless are controlled by the same router. I've tried two, with the same results in each case. When using a Netgear WGR614v6 I let the Netgear handle DHCP. When using a USR8054 I told it to act dumb and let my DSL modem (Actiontec M1000 from Qwest) handle DHCP duties. Again, in both cases the wireless connection to the router allowed iChat AV to connect properly while the wired connection ended in an error message.
What could be going wrong here? Why might the wired connection be failing to allow AV chats?
    Thanks for any insights,
    ...Eric

I would try one thing (this worked for me, thanks to you for telling me that wireless worked)
    goto system preferences >> Network
    delete the wired connection
create another of the same type with a DIFFERENT NAME (ie. Eth1 instead of Ethernet)
type in the same settings as you had previously (manual IP/DHCP, etc)
    try iChat again.
Like i said, it worked for me.
