Really small fonts with openbox

Hi All,
I am just trying out openbox as a window manager for my media box which currently is running gnome3 ... trying to slim down.
I find that the font sizes are incredibly small .. so small that in gnome-terminal i can't see anything and can barely read the window fonts ..
Increasing the size of the window fonts in obconf helps a bit but I suspect that my DPI is wrong or something .. (I am using size 13 ttf-dejavu fonts)
Can anyone suggest what to try and fix this? .. I am running a plasma screen at 1080P ..
Thanks.

Calculate DPI ; http://members.ping.de/~sven/dpi.html
And you can set it in .Xresources ; https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/X_ … _resources
On my TV 1360x768 I've made a compromize with DPI and font size. It seems to be an exact science but in the end, down to your own eyes.

  • Ebay descriptions contain really small fonts using firefox. ok with ie

When using ebay, if I click on an item the text in the description is really small and hard to read. This has only been happening for around a couple of weeks now.
Everything else on ebay - and other websites - is fine.
If I look at ebay item descriptions using Internet Explorer, there's no problem at all - text is big and easy to read.

  • Why does Apple support print those "Hello" booklets that came with my new iMac in super small fonts?

Yesterday I purchased the latest available 27inch iMac from my local Apple only dealer.     ( It sure beats my very first Mac which was an LC520. )
The included in the box printed quick start guide named "Hello" was printed using a font size very close to zero.
Who are these people at Apple support that can read such small fonts with using 20X powered magnifying lenses
    Are they somewhat...
What a waste of mony Apple!

I think it's a point worth making.  It is virtually unreadable.
On reflection, I'm wondering if there is an obligation in some countries to provide such information with a device.   This could be Apple's way of complying while spending the absolute minimum.

  • JTextArea uses a small font that i cant read

I tried viewing a few examples of java swing applications but everytime i see a JTextArea on them the font on it is really small and hard to read. (I think it uses new courier, size 9 according to an application i tried to make on NetBeans)
apparently it doesn't happen on application that use the windows look and feel and look like a native program.
This also happens on two computers i own and also on my friends computers.
    I am using java 6u12.
    Windows xp sp3.
All the computers i tested this on are set to hebrew locales. but the last time i tried changing the locale thinking this was the problem it didnt help.
What is causing this, and is there any way to fix this?

something is still causing it to have a really small font. That something is in its source.... you can't change it (though you can, by changing it and compiling it once again yourself)
    1. JTextArea has small font under windows look and feelTry running following program to check the font of text area in different look and feels:

  • Dreamweaver CS3 problem with small fonts

    Hello,
I am having a problem with text appearing
REALLY SMALL and unreadable in CS3, when it looked fine in
Dw8. It also looks fine in in all browsers.
I talked to Adobe tech support, and they said something about
my CSS file not being correct. I looked at it, and nothing seems
    out of the ordinary.
If it was a problem with my CSS file, wouldn't it look bad in
    the browser as well?
    Any suggestions?
    Ron

    Ron,
Thanks for the sample file. This is a bit complicated, so
    please bear
    with me.
Up until DW8, DW rendering always targeted the most popular
    browser at
that time. For DW8, that was IE6. Traditionally, the most
    popular
browser was the most popular because it was the best browser,
    but that
no longer holds true. So, DW CS3 now targets CSS 2.1. Note
    that DW does
not support all of the CSS 2.1 spec, but what it does support
    follows
    the spec.
Your page does not have a DOCTYPE, so it renders in "quirks"
    mode in the
browsers that I tested it in on WinXP (FF2, IE7, Opera9). DW
    renders
this page in IE6 quirks mode, but DW CS3 no longer supports
    quirks mode.
Put a DOCTYPE such as the following in your page to see what
    I mean:
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01
    Transitional//EN"
    http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
The reason that the font is so small is because of the
    font-size
    property in this rule:
    TD {
    FONT-SIZE: 80%;
Your page has tables nested 4 levels deep, so the 80% is
    compounded at
each level. I fixed this in DW CS3 by creating a style sheet
    with this rule:
    TD { FONT-SIZE: 100% !important; }
and the applied it as a Design-time Style Sheet, although you
    may be
able to remove the 80% altogether.
    Hope this helps,
    Randy

    Hi everyone,
I am having a problem with my Mac OS X 10.7.5 mac book air , there are constant pop pups and small windows with ads blinking constantly opening up on my safari in front of everything?? it is constantly interupting me and makes me mistakingly click on it then another new windows open behind the one im using..
I am not too sure if thats a virus or trojan.. I always thought that macs didn't get virus? this looks like one to me… any experts around? please help me fix it with your instructions? really don't know what to do... thanks

Those are not viruses. You have probably installed some malware:
The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using Dr.Web Light from the App Store. It's free, and since it's from the App Store, it won't destabilize the system. If you prefer one of the better known commercial products, then Thomas recommends using Sophos.(Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.) If you already use Sophos, then be aware of this if you are using Mavericks: OS X Mavericks- Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanner versions 8.0 - 9.1 may cause unexpected restarts
From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect anything targeting the Mac because there
is no Mac malware in the wild, and therefore, no "signatures" to detect.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

  • Mr Magoo has problems with the small font print in the "Everything Mac" man

Well thanks to a one year no payments offer by my local Future Shop i purchased the iMac 3.0.6GHz.
However the "Everything Mac" manual and other enclosed printed documents are printed in extremely small fonts.
Is there a download site for a pdf version which may allow me to print or view the instructions in larger print.
Lordy, SteveJobs must have extremely good vision.

If you find a PDF copy such as this http://manuals.makeuseof.com.s3.amazonaws.com/the-mac-manual.pdf - open that in Safari and zoom to your heart's delight.
As well, go to System Preferences/Universal Access and see if any options there help out.
And finally, if you also have the new Magic Mouse, simply hold down on the Control Key on your keyboard and 'scroll' with one finger fore/aft on the mouse top to zoom with ease.
Good luck and any case and enjoy your new Mac.
Just a note....be sure that manual is current with the OS version on your new computer - things have changed in many ways and if you're learning, you should learn in sync, etc.

  • Internet pages coming up really small

Internet pages with Mozilla come up really small. I have a 22" computer screen, and an internet page will come up as maybe 8x10. I can't even read the type, it's so small.
With Internet Explorer, it comes up fine. I know I can use Control then scroll my mouse to zoom, but I don't want to do that on every page. How can I get this fixed permanently, and not have it affect the way pages come up on Internet Explorer?

You can use one of these extensions to set a default font size and page zoom on web pages:

Hey , I understand that you are not able to print the court seal on legal documents on your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer. I would like to assist you today with resolving this issue. However, I do need to clarify a few things before I will be able to guide you to a solution.  (1) What program are you printing these court documents through?   (2) Does the court seal appear in a Print Preview window under the program?    Once I have the answers to my two questions above I will be happy to guide you to a solution. I look forward to hearing from you!

  • Creating a small "o" with a dash over it??

I'm using IDCS2 on a PC and need to know how to create a small "o" with a horizontal dash over the "o". I'm doing a story for a product named Zon that has a dash over the "o" so it's pronounced Zone. I have a character reference chart for Windows using keyboard strokes and has all sorts of different "o" characters but not one with a dash.
Word has the character available but when I paste the story into InDesign, the "o" with the dash disappears. The only way I can accomplish what I need that I can see is to wait until the story is finalized then actually draw a dash. ?????
Any ideas how to get the actual "o" with a dash character into InDesign?

    ..  I can't say I ever tried to use combining accents ..
It's not something you can try on for size, the font has to contain them.
Accents come in two distinct flavours: combining and non-combining (aka. non-spacing and spacing -- the other way around). The non-combining usually are centred in a half-em space, with that half-em being its character width. Typing them will insert them to the right of your base character, 'above' an empty space. As Scott shows, you need to move the accent to the left by eye.
The combining ones, on the other hand, have a zero width and are drawn on the left hand side of 'empty space'. If you insert them right after a base character, this accent will automatically appear above this character. It is not perfect because the font designer has to decide which character width to base the positioning on (a, e, o, u, or even dotless i -- or even w, n, m, c ... ) and it will look good for some combo's where others still need some manual fine tuning.
Fonts that include separate accents usually just have the spacing ones. Off-hand, Arial Unicode MS is one font that has both 'flavours' -- I can insert first an 'a', then a '̀' to see à (and if you don't have that font on your system, it looks like this: à).
OpenType fonts may contain tables that positions arbitrary accents onto any character, and always in the correct position, but ID lags behind with proper support for this.
