Really strange: plugging in DVI cable turns off powerbook

So I just bought a new KVM: an Avocent Switchview DVI. 4-port DVI/USB switchbox, very nice.
Problem is, if I plug the (known good) ADC 23" Cinema Display (with ADC->DVI converter) into it, and then plug it into my Powerbook, and then turn on the Powerbook, as soon as the Powerbook detects the external display and starts using it, it (the Powerbook) shuts itself off. If I hot-plug it while the powerbook is on, it detects the display, starts to use it, SHOWS THE 'Are you sure you want to shut down?' DIALOG BOX ON THE CINEMA DISPLAY, and THEN turns off.
It's like the DVI connector has a sensor for the power switch in it, and somehow this KVM is triggering it. (I note that the power button is directly on top of the DVI connector... could this be interference?) It's driving me totally nuts.
And then there's my G4 Cube, which works fine with the cinema display, but just doesn't detect it at all when it's plugged into the KVM. It's like they're trying to drive me crazy or something.

Just in case someone is curious, it appears Apple uses the 'hot swap detect' pin on DVI in a non-standard way, at least according to the admittedly biased manufacturers of my DVI switchbox. If I pull the pin out of the cable, it no longer detects hot swaps, but also doesn't turn off my computer when I hook it up.
Of course, my G4 Cube still doesn't work properly with it, so it's basically a worthless piece of junk to me, but hey, that's what you get when you believe the spec sheets, I guess, right?

  • Plugging/Unplugging DVI cable protocol

    I've got my powerbook connected to an external monitor when at my desk via a KVM switch. The KVM switch is finicky with regards to monitor activation and I've discovered I need to have it on and my powerbook on & running when I plug & unplug the DVI cable from the port on my powerbook in order for it to work just right.
    I'm wondering if that is healthy for my powerbook or not(?). Will I hurt it by plugging & unplugging the DVI cable to & from the DVI port on the PowerBook whilst it's awake & running? Is it "plug 'n' play" like USB etc is?
    If I have the powerbook asleep, plug in the DVI monitor, then wake it up, the monitor & powerbook don't see each other. I have to either restart or unplug & replug whilst it's awake. Conversely, if I put my powerbook to sleep, then unplug the DVI cable, it wakes my powerbook up. Thus my reason for asking.
    thanx.jason.

    Thanks for your response Joe.
    I pulled up the manual for my 17"er and found all references to DVI plugging. It does appear that the PB is on when it's plugged in but does not say that specifically - it could just as easily mean to plug it in then boot - it's just not that clear.
    Well, I have one more month to decide wether or not to extend the Apple Care Warranty - I probably should do it since I've already had some issues with it.

  • HELP!! Panther Install disk stalled, turned off powerbook,cant reboot!

    Desperate need of assistance!! Hard drive was giving me nightmares despite clearing everything off (45 gigs spare). Suspected RAM issue or Hard Drive corruption causing everything to run slowly, boot up took 20 minutes, very familiar with the spinning ball. Thought I'd reload Panther 10.3. Got through first disk, restarted, requested second install disk, got through 78% of that then stalled. Turned powerbook off, back on and after the initial grey screen with apple on it got a four bling lines of text suggesting an overlap with OSX9 and reinitiating. Seems to be in a neverending loop, dont know how to stop this. Reboot only brings this up again. Cant eject Install disk 2, cant reboot. Hopefully there is something else I can do as its basically a dead duck at the moment, please help!!

  • Plug in USB or FireWire on Cinema Display and it turns off display power

    Just recently, my monitor lost power.  After checking everything, and putting in a new video card, I have discovered that the monitor works, as long as I do not plug in the USB or ForeWire cables on the end of the monitor cord into the Mac Pro.  This is 20" Apple Cinema Display.  Plugging in either one turns off the power to the display.  Unplug them, and it is back on.

    Very simular, although your cycle count is higher.

    Neither will have harmful effects on the battery. I would leave it overnight so it is still 100% charged when you wake up.

  • HDMI 2 DVI cable -- can get 1080p...sometimes

    I have a Westinghouse LVM42W2 1080p monitor. When I plug Apple TV into the HDMI input, I have an option for 1080p resolution (along with several others), but when I use an HDMI-->DVI cable I just have a choice between 1080i vs 720p.
    However, if I first connect the Apple TV to the monitor with the HDMI-->HDMI cable, set the resolution to 1080p then change the cable to HDMI-->DVI, there is a new option for "1920x1080p - 60Hz" selected along with 1080i and 720p. I checked the monitor and Apple TV is broadcasting in 1080p.
    Now if I change the resolution to 1080i, the option for 1080p disappears. So I can't really use 1080p with the HDMI-->DVI cable.
    Any thoughts?

    I wouldn't worry too much about the i (interlaced)/p (progressive) distinction as that indicates the type of scan, the resolution is still 1080. It may be that using an HDMI-->DVI cable throws off the signal sensing either on the ATV or your TV. Ultimately, if the picture quality is good, there's nothing to fret over.

  • MY MAC TURNS OFF AFTER CONNECTING MY IPOD SHUFFLE

    Every time I connect my ipod shuffle to either my macbook pro or Imac, the computer shuts off.  Can anyone assist me with this issue?

    Hello bjc, 3418,
    It sounds like your iPod is causing any computer you plug it into to turn off unexpectedly. If you've already tried a different usb cable, I would reset the iPod and test it again.

    Then if the issue persists, it sounds to me like that will need service to fix this iPod:

  • How do I turn off percent symbol in JFormattedTextField

    I am using a custom JFormattedTextField field, that has methods to add masks which apply formatting and add suffix and prefixes.
    It allows the user to see the data in display mode (formatted) or raw (unedited mode)
    Just found a problem though with our display mode when I try and add a suffix of a % symbol after the text.
    It turns out that JFormattedTextField does magic when it sees a %.
    It assumes I want to multiply the data by 100, which I do not. (the data is already stored in terms of percent.)
    I found an ugly hack to solve my problem, which is:
      DecimalFormat displayFormat = new DecimalFormat();
      DecimalFormatSymbols dfs = displayFormat.getDecimalFormatSymbols();
      dfs.setPercent('~'); // set to a symbol we will never use
      displayFormat.setDecimalFormatSymbols(dfs);
      this.setFormatterFactory(new DefaultFormatterFactory(new NumberFormatter(displayFormat)));
      // then later we apply our mask
      // used to do this
      // displayFormat.applyPattern(myDisplayFormat);
      // now have to do this so it does not overwrite our percent symbol
      this.displayFormat.applyLocalizedPattern(myDisplayFormat);It seems like there should be an easier way to accomplish this.
    What I was really hoping I could do, is "turn off" the percent substitution functionality.
    i.e. something like displayFormat.disablePercentFormatting(true);
    but at the moment, messing with localised symbols seems like the only way to hack it.
    Anyone have any thoughts? I just want DecimalFormat not to treat a % as a special symbol.
    note:
    Changing the data itself (dividing it by 100) is not an option as the data is entered elsewhere and it would screw up the raw view of the data too.
    Changing the underlying framework (of how we use our display / edit fields and masks etc) is not an option
    as there are hundreds of screens and objects using this framework already with no problems (they dont have a % in their mask though)
    I look forward to bright ideas.
    Cheers,
    - ding

    This behavior is documented in the API of DecimalFormat. If you don't want the special character to be interpreted, you need to quote it:
    Many characters in a pattern are taken literally; they are matched during parsing and output unchanged during formatting. Special characters, on the other hand, stand for other characters, strings, or classes of characters. They must be quoted, unless noted otherwise, if they are to appear in the prefix or suffix as literals. and
    '      Prefix or suffix      No      Used to quote special characters in a prefix or suffix, for example, "'#'#" formats 123 to "#123". To create a single quote itself, use two in a row: "# o''clock". see also: http://download.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/text/DecimalFormat.html

  • Portege R830 - Can't turn off touchpad

    Hi, strange issue. But cant turn off the touchpad on a Portege R830 (Windows 7 32bit). I have seen this problem on both of the machines I have. This has never been an issue for the Tecra models I've had, M5, M9, M10, M11, R840 etc.
    I have the latest Alps driver installed, from Toshiba.co.uk. I have tried the button on the touchpad, this does not work. The Alps device cannot be disabled from Device Manager. I have tried the Toucpad properties from the System Tray, Advanced Tab, Advanced Settings. This does not have a simple "turn off touchpad" setting. It does have an option to turn off the touchpad when using a USB mouse - however, this also does not work.
    Can anyone help with this? The only other option I can think of is the BIOS, but this would not suit my users, who may want to switch it back on again at some point while running Windows.

    Hey,
    Yes you can disable the tapping function in mouse settings. Navigate to control panel > Hardware and Sound > Mouse > Advanced > Advanced feature setting and uncheck the tapping function.
    The user Xardas did post some screenshots in another thread how to do this:
    [Tecra A11 - How to change touchpad sensitivity? |http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=59356]
    The last screenshot shows the window where you can disable the tapping.

  • Turning off Events

    Is there any way to not have events being made every time I put a picture into iPhoto. I see how this would be nice to put photos off my camera, but when I am just putting single photos in, it is a huge pain to get a different event for each one... Is there any way that I can either choose to not have the events or get it to combine the events together in some way? In preferences there is an option to have a single event for a day, but that doesn't appear to do anything.

    Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
    SOrt of
    You can not turn events off
    You can make the event time line a week - but if you are importing single photos this really will not help
    You can turn off time based splits into events for items imported from the finder, but again if you bring single photos in they will each be an event
    What I do is collect the misc photos in a desktop folder and bring several in at once creating just one event that way - then combine that event into an existing event of the same nature (which may be misc photos) or leave it as event on its own
    Or you can essentially ignore events and do all of your own organizing with Keywords, albums and folders - this is more the TD way

  • Blackberry z10 suddenly turned off help!

    Hello.
    O had never had a problem with my phone, I have it for less than a year or so. It always worked really well until... it turned off and never on again. I tried to charge it but not even the red LED appears. Is there a way to reboot it or something??
    I feel hopeless. I bought it in US through amazon but live in Argentina!!

    Hi and Welcome to the Community!
    Please try this sequence...note that, throughout the entire 4h15m process, your BB must remain directly connected to a known-good wall charger (not PC USB, not a cradle):
    With the battery inside, connect your BB to the wall charger
    Leave it alone for 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
    Remove the battery
    Wait 15 minutes
    Insert the battery
    Wait another 2 hours, no matter what the LED or the display does
    This has been known to "kick start" some BBs.
    It is also possible that your battery or BB has experienced a problem...to test, this sequence is needed:
    Obtain an known good and already fully charged additional battery...use it in your BB and see what happens
    Obtain access to a known good and identical BB...use your battery in it and see what happens
    The results of this will indicate if it's your BB or your battery that has the problem. Note carefully please that "new" and "know good" are not necessarily the same things. While rare, a "new" battery certainly could be defective. Rather, the simplest (and least costly, btw) method to conduct this test is to find someone with an identical BB who has no issues...trade batteries and see what happens.
    Good luck and let us know!
