Really weird connection problem

Hi, I'm having a really strange problem here - at least I think so. Recently one of my roommates bought a new wireless adapter (802.11g), which I would really like to use as it's faster than my old Airport Snow basestation (802.11b). I'm using a Powerbook G4 with an Airport Extreme card running OS X 10.4.7. Here's the actual issue: Whenever I try to connect to my roommates network my PB tells me everything's fine. I get full signal strength in the menu bar and Iternet Connect tells me that I#m connected to the network. When I try to use mail or a webbrowser, however, it doesn#t work. Mail tells me I#m not online and Safari comes up with an error message: #You are not connected to the internet.'
I know my Airport card works as I can use my own slower network. In addition, my roommates network also works as he has no problems using it. I should probably mention that he's using a PC notebook (Dell). If that works a Mac should too. Any ideas what's going on? What should/could I do? Do I have to change any settings/preferences? I know PCs give you a million things to change in order to go online.
Thx a lot for your help.

You may need to look into the System Preferences> Network control pane
and see what the configuration(s) are; the order of preference to use
dialup, ethernet, and airport/wireless. Also you may need to see how the
network controls "see" your local wireless connection once you select to
have the AirPort at the top of the list and set to connect via airport; plus
with the Airport icon set to appear in the menubar.
The "Network Port Configurations" is where you can see and checkbox
some of these items, and for others you'd need to look a little further and
wider. I seldom look into mine, even though I run between wireless and
ethernet and sometimes have dialup, airport and ethernet all active in this.
But only use one at a time, and primarily am using one means of connecting
to the internet active at once; chosing to uncheck boxes and/or drag the
order of them accordingly in the configuration panel.

  • Really weird laptop problem, please help!

    Hi,
I just got a new laptop this weekend, Lenovo S205, everything is perfect and so far I love it.
However, one really weird problem i cannot find an answer for anywhere.
When I shut the laptop down it instantly restarts. Doesnt matter if I hold the power button down either, as soon as I let go it boots back up.
I have no peripherals plugged in or anything.
    I'm totally stumped!!
Its really annoying as the only way to turn my laptop off is to unplugged the battery, or just let it run down.
    Any ideas much appreciated.

    Hi and welcome,
did you prove your energymanagement & a few windows settings  at the end of this EM Settings in knowledgebase...
as well something could provoke restart instead of shutdown ...
Best is to exclude software failure,  restore to factory condition with dvds ..  Create Factory Disc
after factory restore ... if your S205 have same behaviour ...call your local service..

  • Works for webrowsing, not for gaming... weird connection problems.

So back in November my wife and I were planning on moving but unfortunately the job didn't pan out and we ended up staying where we are now. I had canceled my Comcast cable internet starting Dec1st so I wouldn't get billed for the 12 days we intended to be in the state. At the time, I had my cable modem plugged into my Airport Extreme basestation (about 2 years old, but still the wireless G model) which serviced my iMac G4, iBook, XBox and Nintendo DS with an excellent connection pretty much all the time.
I recently got Comcast back again since we'll be staying where we're at for a couple more months at least, but now my network is acting funny. While plugged directly into the cable modem, my computers and XBox function perfectly. But when I attempted to set up my wireless connection again, it didn't work quite the same way again. My iMac and iBook can connect for webbrowsing and chatting on AIM/MSN although I occasionally get drops (never really happened before). My XBox won't connect wirelessly at ALL anymore. My DS will connect, but instead of getting normal "slow internet connection" lag, I get pauses. For instance, I'd play smoothly for a few seconds, and then the game would freeze, then play pretty smoothly again, then freeze again. This game forces a split host, so both players get the same lag to attempt to make the game as even as possible. But my friends who play don't have the same problem facing each other, only against me.
I've watched the LED's on the front of my basestation AND my cable modem while surfing the web, using AIM and (attempting) to play my DS. The center and right lights stay active the entire time, but the left light is almost always off. It merely flashes for a few seconds here and there and then cuts out. In fact, during the times my DS game worked smoothly, it was flashing, when it stopped flashing the game froze. Also, on the cable modem, MOST of the time while connected to my basestation the SEND light is not active, but all the others are. Again, it flashes for a few seconds here and there and then cuts out.
This modem is a different one than I had before when I had comcast. They updated the modems used in this area, so my guess so far has been that somehow the Airport basestation doesn't query the modem enough to keep the connection active. That would also explain why when I haven't been using the internet and then start to, it takes 2 or 3 tries to get a page to load. Once that happens things work pretty smoothly, albiet slower than it did the first time I had comcast/AE network setup. Also, occasionally I get an error message when trying to join the network (right after boot-up or after an error or drop) that says there was an error joining the network, and then I have to wait a little while before my iMac will even see the network again.
Does anyone have any suggestions for getting my basestation to work for my gaming systems? Or to get the network to be more stable for websurfing/chatting. I never changed any settings on my basestation from the time I had it before, in fact, it never even moved. I don't want to go buy another wireless router if it's a communication problem that can be fixed some other way. Someone please help me out. Thanks a bunch~!

    First welcome to the discussions.
You mention a couple of times when you had Comcast.
If you changed service to DSL it will be slower by 1/2.
Unless I am mistaken the left light is power and the middle is ethernet and the right is activity.
It sounds like you may be loosing your connection intermident. I would not chang e any settings at all on your computers and leave evrything plugged in.
I would however check and make sure that all your cables are in tight. then I would do a complete system reset.
This method is recommended by all the Router Manufactures with a little different twist added by me.
Pull the Power Adapter from your ISP's Modem. and do the same with your Router.
Wait for at least 5 minutes and plug in the Power Adapter to the MODEM First and you have to wait until you get all the lights normally 3 after that plug in the power adapter to your ROUTER and again you have to wait until it reacquires the signal and lights,I would restart your computer and give it a whirl.
It can't hurt to unplug every thing that you have plugged in Printer, scanner x box anything that could affect it untill you have a good signal again and after you are good then you can plug everything back in.
    Cheers Don

  • E1200 weird connection problem

Recently I got a brand new E1200 from the Cisco store to replace Apple Extreme Base station for my home wireless network. The router deployed just fine except one weird problem. While all devices (desktops, laptops, cell phones, iPad) can access the router, one desktop (Dell Optiplex DX280)  cannot see the router at all. The router network, even with default SSID, does not even show in the wireless network list, no matter how many times the list is refreshed. The wireless adapter (Dell TrueMobile 1800 USB2.0) is fine, since it picks up the router SSID when connected to another desktop. The stubborn desktop works just fine with previous Apple router and can see many networks around, like neighbors' networks.  Thinking that some other previously installed software interferes with seeing the router SSID, I completely wiped and reformatted HD and reinstalled fresh copy of WinXP - still the same result, the dektop works just fine with the Apple router, but still cannot see E1200 SSID. The router was reset to factory defaults and all access restrictions were removed. While all the devices see the default SSID and can conncet to the router with no problems, the stubborn desktop keepcompletely ignoring it. Any ideas what may be the problem?

It is SP3, and there was no error message. SSID just was not showing up in list of available networks on Optiplex desktop. As I found later, just by chance in contrast to getiing answer straight from Dell, it was a driver issue. Optiplex desktop was equipped with older driver, 1.5.0.1 or so, a while ago because this is what was recommended (and continues to be recommended!) at Dell's site for the supplied service tag. It was working just fine with Apple router. On the other hand, the Compaq desktop, which was picking up routher's SSID normally with the same USB adaptor, somehow had loaded a newer version, 3.3 something, from the internet. When the older  driver was installed from the Dell website, Compaq lost all wireless capabilities. So when I just upgraded driver from within WinXP Device Manager, the newer version was installed and the missing SSID has immediately shown up in Optiplex' wireless network list. I wish that Dell suooprt and site was better organized, but it is as bad as jungle and Tech Support asks a lot of irrelevant questions wasting their and my time and getting nowhere.

  • Really weird sound problem

I have a 1st gen 32 GB iPod touch running iPhone os 3.1.3. and I am having a very strange problem where I cannot hear any vocal track on movies or music. I can hear any sound effects or music just fine, but talking or singing cannot be heard. On some songs I can hear some echoing vocals but it is clearly not right. I have gone to the Apple Store where we performed a full reset. I have used multiple headphones, and tried many different files and the problem persists. If I connect the iPod to an external stereo with the ipod connector everything works fine. the problem is limited to headphones. Have any of you run into this problem? If so was there a fix?

I have the same problem with my Ipod touch 8GB running the new os 4.0 (the newest update..cant remember it exactly). Its really irritating, i've had it since december and it just happened yesterday with the dodgy vocals. My sound fixes itself if i press down on the front of the ipod touch on the right of the home button, so my guess is a loose connection in the headhphone jack which is reconnected upon pressure being applied, but releasing pressure means the problem occurs again. I;ve reset, restored and even cleaned out the headphone jack with no results.
Im going to be taking my Ipod to an apple store to get this probelm resolved as i am still under the warranty so lets hope it gets fixed or replaced.

  • Really weird jvm problem...

    Hi,
I just deployed a webapp of mine in Weblogic 10.0 and I get this very weird error when I try to acces a specific part of my webapp.
    java.lang.AssertionError: FIXME andyp 1-Jan-04 -- unreplaced JVMID: 6344131804612400084S::dads11644:myserver

    at java.io.ObjectOutputStream.writeObject(ObjectOutputStream.java:291)
Truncated. see log file for complete stacktrace
What does this means? The exact same code was working fine under Weblogic 8.1 SP5 with jdk 1.4.2_013. It seems to be related to the jvm (Weblogic 10 now uses jdk150_06), but I really dont know what to do with this error. The code that throws this error is a serialization of a bean object (writeObject method of ObjectOutputStream throws this to be specific), but it was working fine before, so I really doubt there is anything wrong with my code. the bean that is serialized is quite simple and everything that is not a String is declared transient.
I also tried launching WLS with jrockit90_150_06, but I get the same error.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Really weird WiFi problem with original iPad, please help!!!

Hey everyone so I recently inherited an original iPad from my uncle who stopped using it because of WiFi issues. Unfortunately he didn't do much to try to figure out the problem and there's no warranty on it but I'd really like to fix it!
The problem is that it doesn't display nearly any available networks under the WiFi settings, but it DOES seem to show and connect to unsecured networks (and works really well...I'm in a hotel typing on it right now). But at home, in the hotel room, at my uncles place, etc...no networks show up. Also I can't connect to them if I enter manually.
So far I've tried a hard reset, fully restoring, resetting network settings, and resetting all settings...I would take it to Apple but there's no warranty
Any ideas of how I can fix this potentially?
    Thanks!

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router. Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • Really weird network problem... Please help!

This is really starting to tick me off, so I hope you can help me. This isn't exactly Archlinux related, but the problem persists on the whole network regardless of OS being used.
Ok, so I got my new D-Link 5-port switch home a few days ago. I wanted to hook up my laptop so it could access the internet.
I'll try to illustrate how the layout of the network is made up in my home:
    Internet -------> Router -------> Switch -----------> My dad's computer
                                                             |
-----------> My switch -------------> My main desktop
                                                                                             |
                                                                                             -------------> My laptop
As you see, we split the internet between our 3 computers, where 2 of them are mine, and 1 is my dad's. The problem is, that we can't run more than 2 computers online. DHCP just won't function.
If I have both of my computers online, my dad can't connect to the internet. If my dad has his computer online, I can't connect with 1 of my computers. So we are constantly only able to be 2 on the internet. I see no logical explaination for why this is happening, because the internet is split on the first switch, to my dad and me, then from my own switch, I split my connection between my 2 computers.
Please help me, this is really giving me an edge. I REALLY hope you can help

    SomeoneWithAPurpose wrote:IP-Address: 87.58.149.226
    That confirms my suspicion.
I think I can explain the problem. Every computer that connects to a network needs an IP address. Normally you connect a router to the internet and the router gets a public IP address from the ISP's server. This is the address that people see when you connect to their sites. When you connect your computer to the router, the router gives you a different IP address. that only people on your LAN can see. The router can give several addresses because they are only used on the LAN, so you can connect multiple computers to it and each one can get a unique IP address. When you connect to the internet, your computers communicates with the router using private IP addresses on the LAN, then your router communicates with computers on the internet using public IP addresses.
In your case, your router is not configured to give out IP addresses. Instead, when you connect you are getting a public IP address directly from the ISP's server. Your ISP only has 2 public IP addresses that it can give you so that is why you cannot connect more than 2 computers at a time. You need to configure your router to act as a gateway between your LAN and the internet. To do this,  you have to access the router's menu and set up a dhcp server (which gives out IP addresses on the LAN) along with a firewall and whatever else you need (your current setup makes your computer directly accessible from the internet which can be unsafe, especially when running Windows).
    Oh damn.
I went downstairs to find out where the manuals for the router were... Turns out we don't have a router ...
All we have is 3 boxes; A internet phone adapter, a ethernet xDSL modem and a switch. Maybe this is why it's all ****ed up? Sorry for the misleading, but my dad always told me that we had a router. =\
Ah... yeah, that's a problem. What brand is the modem? Maybe it has some router functionality anyway.

  • Weird connection problem

I am using wifi with my mac. But every now and then when I am browsing the internet, the pages won't load. It will still say that there is a good connection on the screen, but again the pages won't load, or sometimes take a very very long time to load.
However, I figured out that if I close my macbook and then reopen it, the pages load up and the connection works again.
    What is the problem here?

Well I am using a Verizon DSL router/modem, Westell 7500.
I have a home desktop computer that is connected to it through an ethernet cable. Everything works fine for that computer. My macbook pro is connected wirelessly.
I usually use Google Chrome, but the same thing happens on any browser.

  • Really weird sound problem with rhythmbox[SOLVED]

Well, I can't find anything on this, so i'm posting it here. I have no sound problems with alsa or other gstreamer apps(totem, banshee plays sound just fine). But when I try to play something in rhythmbox it just does not work. Mostly there is no sound, but every couple of seconds you can hear a distorted sound that is suposed to be playing for a moment. Rhythmbox does not issue any warnings or errors when launched from terminal. Is this some kind of bug?

  • Really weird ipod problem that i cant find info on

Okay, so i took my ipod to my dad's house over the weekend and his computer messed it up. Now when i import songs, they appear to convert to the ipod when I'm in itunes, but once i unplug the ipod from the computer (and yes i do eject it first) the songs disappear. For some reason i can't ad any songs to my ipod anymore. Earlier some weird message about a corrupted file chklis/file7 or something along that line at least came up. And well, I have no idea what to do. Ive been searching for help all night and i havent found any yet.

Assuming that your computer recognizes the iPod is connected, check out the instructions/suggestions here.
    Music from iPod to computer.
There's also another method I've seen posted. I've successfully tested this across several different Windows PCs.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
However it appears that no playlists or any other info such as ratings/last played etc will transfer.
If this is important to you, you may want to use other options.
There's Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer.

  • Really weird color problems

This is really strange. I have a feeling that this is just some setting that I accidentally tripped, but I can't figure it out.
When I look at a picture file in the finder it looks fine. The colors look normal, etc. When I open that picture in any viewer (Photoshop, Preview, etc.) it looks extremely washed out. Here's the weirdest thing: when I open them in Adobe Bridge it initially looks fine, and then almost immediately converts to the washed out look.
What can this be? I don't think its a PS/Bridge problem because its also happening in Preview.
This is really making me nuts. Opening the same files on other computers I have do not have the problem, only on the one in question.
BTW - its a MacPro running Leopard.

When I open a picture in Preview it looks bad, but when I open the same picture in Firefox it looks fine. Obviously Preview and Photoshop must be using some profile that Firefox doesn't use - what can this be???

  • [SOLVED] Really weird resolution problem(Probably related to kms)

Hey guys, I've used arch on a couple machines before but I never seen something like this.
The problem is that the screen area is really strange, it's not even the same in every boot. Sometimes it's just black, but i can reboot just fine with ctrl + alt + del, sometimes the terminal is placed right on the middle of screen, so the right part is ok, but the left part acts like its continuation, kinda like a dual monitor setup, pic: http://i.imgur.com/zYmtlZq.jpg  . And sometimes(very rare) it's displayed correctly.
This is a fresh install, with just xorg and the open source ati drivers installed, but this thing also happens with the installation media.
nomodeset "solves" this, but startx doesn't work then.
Oh, and the machine is a sony vayo model SVE1712Z1EB with a Radeon HD 7650M.
