Really wierd problem! HELP!

Today I restarted my mac because I had just installed a new version of quicktime.
But when it rebooted everything was wrong. The custom background I had was replaced with the standard apple one. All of the icons in the status bar had been reset to default (eg. I had the time set to display seconds, but now it doesn't. And when I go into preferences to change it back it doesn't work).
The dock has gone back to default and has a question mark for iMovie. When I go into preferences to change something like the background, it doesn't work. It remains the same. Also there are no longer any startup items listed. But there were before.
Mail is asking me to set up an account when I already have 2 accounts set up. iTunes displayed a licence agreement on launch. Loads of other apps have been reset.
But what's even more weird is that all my prefences, applications, files, folders, everything are still there, un-touched. All as they were before the restart.
I've tried repairing permissions and the same file pops up. cd9660.fs. It changes the permissions everytime, but it never seems to work.
I've also tried doing a disk repair. That says there is an incorrect file count everytime, but never seems to work when it trys to fix it.
What do I do next?
Tom

Hi Tom
You have several unconnected things going on here.
First, the case of the missing user files. Did you, at any point, rename your home folder (the folder with the house icon)? See here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107854
Second, the message about the cd9660 permissions in Repair Permissions can be safely ignored. See here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107298
Third, the incorrect file count. Presumably you ran Disk Utility from your installation disk? Have you tried running DiskWarrior - if not, I thoroughly recommend it.
But first, restore your home folder as specified in the first step.

  • I've got a really wierd problem

    Alright well my specs are:
    athlon64 3000+ newcastle core
    sapphire radeon 9800pro 256-bit 128mb
    geil pc3200 ddram
    samsung 120gb 7,200 rpm 8mb cache hdd
    msi k8t fsr
    running win2k server sp4
    now heres the problem, ever since a few days ago when I booted my computer normally the mouse(microsoft optical) has stopped working(I can notice its not getting any power because the laser on the bottem is off, normally it turns on after the second set of beeps when I boot up), when I plug in some old mouse it works fine. Now the major problem is that when I plug in my linksys usb adapter my mouse almost stops working, as in I can't move the pointer but it still responds to clicks. Also the lights on the usb adapter dim out, as if it isn't getting any power.
    now I'm not sure if something happened to the mobo or if somethings wrong with my powersupply, sadly its a stock 420W psu from thermaltake that came with my case
    if it matters I'm using 10 case fans but I doubt that my psu can't support my hardware since its been working for 2 months now..
    help and any ideas would be great

    aha!!! another person with exactly the same problem as me!!!
    m8, i had EXACTLY the same problem, i had threads 40 responses long about it...
    there IS a solution!!
    but it costs money... you need a powered USB hub, basically a PCI card which has usb ports in the back of it, no external power, just plugged into the pci slots. i have only just fixed this problem after 3/4 months of random problems, ill link my old discussions about it in a sec.
    hope this does fix it for you, im pretty sure it will!
    Edit: thats obviously only for the mice and gamepads etc wont help with network afaik

  • Really wierd issue,help

    Purchased new PC with Windows 7, Had previous wireless netwok. Wife has laptop with wireless connection. When I installed new PC lost connection with laptop. Heres the strange part.......when I try to connect wireless with laptop.   Windows goes into blue screen and starts dumping memeory (physical memory dump). If I drive up the road say to MacDonalds , I can connect. I have to disable the wireless adapter ,then can bring home and connect through Lan wired, no problem.  As soon as I enable the wireless card, its starts the physical memeory dump thing.  Have done this numerous times. As long as I go somewhere else ,I can connect , no problem. As soon as I enable at home it does this. Help....

    As sabretooth suggested,Try to update the driver of the wireless card and it will resolve your problem.

  • Lightbox 2 problem- Could really use some help!!!

    I have several galleries the last picture of each gallery repeats over and over. Caption says 10f 8 but I only have 5 pictures but last one just keeps repeating! Would really apprecite some help.
    Here's source code but I'm wonderingcould it be a problem with lightbox.js or jquery-1.7.2
    because I've checked this all over and over and it appears to be correct. I'm not familiar with their coding.

    Remove all <br> tags from within the title tag. You cannot have nested tags this way. Also, the instruction wont be required (IMO). People should be knowing how to navigate lightbox. Or, you could do one thing and display the right and left arrows at all times (not just while hover, the way it is now). This will fix 50% of your problem.
    Notice the red highlight in your code above. Fix the closing DIV tag.
    Provide thumbnails for all of your Lightbox images. This way your users are aware there are more images on your site. Also, you give them the choice of choosing what image they want to zoom into, rather than forcing them to go through them one at a time.

  • Oracle 9.2: Really strange problem so Please Help!

    Hi All,
    I am having a really strange problem and I don't know why it is so. I have a simple sproc (for testing) that updates one column in a table and the where clause uses two in params and the set clause uses a local variable. I stepped through it in JDeveloper and saw the execute of the update and commit statements and in params' values and the local variable's value, but the row will not be updated! If I changed the where clause to use literal values (303 and '1045225') and the set clause to use 3, then it works. If params and a variable are used for these three values, the row does not get updated! And when I added the dbms_output.put_line to print out the param's value and the variable value, they are all there! Here is the code:
    create or replace procedure sprocTestUpdate (
         Action          in varchar2 := 'FETCH',

                   attemptcount = attemptcount + 1
         where queueid = p_QueueID and PK = p_PK;

    and here is the test script in SQL*Plus:
    declare

         StatusDesc := 'PROCESSED';
         PK := '1045225';
         sprocTestUpdate(action, QueueID, StatusDesc, PK);
    end;
    thanks.
    ben

    Ghulam, this is what I was talking about:
    <<
    StatusID := 3;
    if Action = 'STATUSUPDATE' then
    update QueuePublish
    set StatusID = StatusID,
    attemptcount = attemptcount + 1
    where queueid = 303 and PK = '1045225';
    commit;
    dbms_output.put_line(to_char(StatusID) || ' For ' || to_char(QueueID));
    end if;
    and it won't update! but if I say set StatudID = 3 it will work!
    >>
    might be better to do :
    L_STATUSID := 3 ;
    ste STATUS_ID = :L_STATUSID
    ...otherwise you are just replacing STATUSID by itself,
    poor RDBMS-engine doesn't know what StatusId you are talking about

  • I have a really strange problem....

    I have all my songs organized by genre, and on my ipod it repeats the genres, like it says rock and rock below it again, it does this wiht many of the genres, and sometimes they have the same artists in them, and sometimes it has one artist in one, and all the rest of that genre in the other...this is really wierd. I made sure that the genres on itunes were all the same, like spelling and capitalization, but it is still doing this.
    also, i noticed this is only happening with those genres that appear twice in the genre window that pulls down when i organize my songs, i don't kno but i think if somehow i could delete the genres i don't need it would fix the problem so that way i would only have one genre of rock, pop, or whatever repeats on my ipod...pleassssssse help if you kno how to fix this, it's driving me INSANE!!!

    Yes, im having the exact same problem.

  • When downloading iTunes, I got a message about error writing to file and it told the file. Then it said to verify that you have access to that directory. I have no idea how to fix it. I could really use some help, please.

    I was trying to download iTunes on my computer, and while doing so, I got this message: Error writing to file: C:/Program Files (x86)/Common Files/Apple/Apple Application Support/Apple Versions.dll. Verify that you have access to that directory. I have downloaded iTunes numerous times and I have never had this problem. If anyone knows what's going on, I would really appreciate the help.

    Well, there's definitely a mac and a Windows version. And you're at the right page. I think the problem is that someone forgot (or decided not to) to update the text at teh bottom of the page to have Mac and Windows.
    Just push the button, you'll get the Mac update no problem.

  • Wierd problem with web start in windows 7

    I have a wierd problem with my web start app in windows 7, it just hang it self. it work fine in windows XP and Vista.
    The wierd thing is that i can open the app but when i press on a specific button that will make a jlabel present a .png image everthing crash. why do i get this problem now? when i start the app, i load some pic i jlabels and that seems to work fine, but when i do it under the exection it seems to crash, why?
    Should i do something different to make the app work in windows 7?
    I hope someone can help me out!!

    You should:
    a) open the console (java control panel, advanced options) and see the stackTrace (if any). If it's not there check for swallowing.
    b) post a code snippet, to at least show how and where you retrieve the png. Possibly a SSCCE.
    c) check if this happens also running as a standalone app (may be more Swing-related than JWS-related).
    Bye.

  • Using iWeb to publish my mobileme photo gallery -really weird bugs help plz

    I have a really weird problem and have tried searching the forums already with no luck.
    I'm using iWeb09 to put mobileme photo album on my website. When I initially add the widget onto my page, the widgets will show a "preview" of what pictures are in the gallery if you hover your mouse over it. Later during the day, I'm not sure if I did anything to mess it up but that "preview" is no longer there. It's just a black box. It still works however if you click on it because it takes you to the mobile gallery.
    The only way for me to fix it was to delete the mobile me album and create a new one. Then re-add the widget onto my iWeb.
    This has happened twice to me already and I cannot figure out why it happens. I'm sorry if my description is vague. Please help.

    There is no point in re-installing iWeb, because after you have published it really is not an iWeb problem - if there is something not working on uploading the files, then it is really nothing to do with iWeb after html pages have been created.
    If you are using Fetch to upload, then you have obviously published your site to a local folder? If so, are the photos there when you look at your local site? If they are there when you publish to a local site, then it is an error in uploading and if photos do not show, it means that some things are not being uploaded to your server correctly.
    Have you tried using Cyberduck instead of Fetch? Cyberduck or Transmit are two of the better ftp programmes to try.

  • Color management problems - help please!

    Hello, I'm trying hard to understand color management and to make colors consistent throughout my workflow, and I'm failing miserably despite reading and re-reading the help files. I'd REALLY appreciate some help with my specific problems, which I'm going to detail here.
    WHAT I DO
    I make pictures for use on the Web. I do both this by photoshopping existing photos, and by digitally drawing and painting in photoshop starting from a blank document.
    HOW MY SYSTEM IS SET UP
    1) I have my monitor set to sRGB, and I've calibrated the colors using the Viewsonic calibration app that came with the monitor. The resulting colors look good, to my eyes at least.
    2) I've set up Photoshop to use sRGB as the working RGB colorspace, and to convert RGB images to the working colorspace
    3) I've set up Photoshop's Save For Web to embed the color profile, to Convert to sRGB, and to Preview with Use Document Profile
    THE PROBLEM I'M HAVING
    The preview I see in the Save For Web preview screen exactly matches the source document. However, after saving for web, the color of the jpg or gif is significantly different to that of the original document.
    If I change the preview mode to Monitor Color, it does show an accurate representation of the jpg or gif that will be saved, but of course as I've explained that is drastically different to the source document.
    WHAT I NEED
    1) I need the output jpg or gif to match the source document
    2) I need to understand what's going wrong so that I can gain some insight into this process. I'm finding it very confusing
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Mark,
    What model of viewsonic do you have? And is it a CRT or LCD?
    If it's a CRT, there are some software based "eyeball" calibrators which can get you in the ballpark. If you have an older version of Photoshop you can use the Adobe Gamma utility that was included in CS2 and earlier versions.
    After that, my previous advice still stands, but the best results are still going to be to bite the bullet for a colorimeter and live with the peace of mind that will give you.
    If your Viewsonic is an LCD, you're much more limited, as the eyeball calibrators were never designed for LCD's. You can try them and they may be better than nothing, but no guarantees.

  • Really wierd stains when inserting photoshop files into my indesign document

    Dear Indesigners,
    I had encountered this problem before. Then I exported the file as JPEG and printed from there on.
    But now it really bothers me what adobe is doing.
    I am creating a birthcard. There for I designed the background (in indesign with simple lines & circles). Photo with ribbon I designed in photoshop. The circle pattern around the picture is also in Indesign.
    Whenever I print this file from indesign I get really wierd stains on my Photoshop part of the document.  You can verify this in the attachment.
    If I export this and print from there, the stains are nowhere to be seen.
    Is this some weird setting that I have looked over? The Photoshop document is in CMYK format.
    This is the export file:
    This is the scanned, printed file (increased contrast)

  • Wierd problem with SAFARI

    OS X 10.10
    Safari 8.0
    I have this really weird problem:
    When my MBP is connected at work with ethernet, all is good.
    When I go home and connect my MBP through WiFi, Safari doesn't work.
    It will simply not be able to connect to anything.
    EVERYTHING ELSE works (iMessage, Mail, etc.)
    Not Safari.
    And : FIREFOX works.
    So I starting looking around in the preferences... anything related to the network brings my to SYSTEM PREFS > NETWORKS and everything is adequately configured there.
    I couldn't find how to "RESET" Safari since version 8.0 but I still did that "CLEAN HISTORY AND COOKIES" option, specifying EVERYTHING.
    It didn't help.
    Do you guys have any idea how to fix this weird thing ??

      Go step by step by step and test.
    1. Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
        Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly. It will take a while.
        Restart the computer.
        Start up in Safe Mode.

    2. Delete Caches.db
        Close all windows and quit all applications.
        Hold "option" key down and click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.
        Select "Library" from the dropdown.
        Library > Caches > com.apple.Safari > Caches.db
        Right click the Caches.db file and select "Move To Trash.
        Close windows and relaunch Safari.
    3. Empty Caches
        Safari > Preference > Advanced
        Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
        Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
        Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
