Realtime Playback

Hello everyone!
Have been doing some filming on the Canon EOS5D with great results and now pulling my hair out over trying to edit it with Final Express. The main problem being it just doesn't play this footage back realtime, starting in the preview monitor and similarly frustrating in the timeline where it always demands to render first...unbearably time consuming. The thing that bothers me most is that imovie8 can play these films perfectly fine...and there I go out of my way to buy a decent editing software and then FCE foes this. I am hoping I have just overlooked some settings...have tried all safe/unlimited RT, playing back in different qualities, trying various timeline settings, from Pal-DV to HDV-Apple...to no results.
My footage comes available both, as .mov or .mp4 , each with H.264 compressor and a framesize of 916x540 at 25fps.
Any hair-saving ideas, greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Sarah

FCE doesn't work with 25fps video. As far as I'm aware, it doesn't like 916x540, either. If you are using this video, you would first have to convert it with a utility such as [MPEG Streamclip|http://www.squared5.com>.
Alternatively, I saw when searching for your camera that it can shoot in some resolution of HD with 1080. If this is either 1440x1080 or 1920x1080 then FCE can handle it using Log and Transfer. However, if it is still at 25fps this doesn't solve your problem.
If you want to continue using this frame rate and image size, then you will have to convert it to a FCE-friendly format prior to importing.

  • Realtime playback - intensive filters

    Hi,
Today I've made another transition. One that is more processor intensive, and propably will not get realtime playback.
I've read the guide I can communicate with the player (piSuites->timelineFuncs.).
Do I have to tell it not to try to play realtime?
What is the exact function of it? And how do I do that?
Now if I try and play an unrendered piece of my transition, playback stutters and continues to stutter even beyond this point.
This is not a really nice way to handle playback.
So I'm wondering what to do...
    Cheers,
    Jaap

    Hi Jaap,
Unless the player plug-in is one that you've developed, you won't be able to communicate with it to change the real-time reporting of your effect.  Your transition will automatically be flagged as non-realtime, with a red bar above the segments that the transition spans in the timeline.  Playback in Premiere Pro plays at full speed, rendering the transition as fast as possible, which may or may not be full frame rate according to the processing power required and the system setup.  If you don't get full frame rate in the preview, and you need to see that, as a user you can generate preview renders.

  • Realtime Playback in Color? HELLLP!

    Hello all,
Maybe somenne can point out what I am doing wrong. I have a Quad G5 PPC 2.5 ghz with 8 gigs of RAM and a Quadro FX 4500 card, a 500 meg per second RAID 5 and a Black Magic HD Pro card. I cannot get Color to play any format in real time. 720p 10Bit I barely squeek out 20 fps. I only get 7 fps running 1080p 10bit @ 23.976. Even 10bit NTSC will only get to 25 fps. Am I over looking some obvious setting or config. conflict? Please let me know. I am also getting a weird tearing in my broadcast monitor (Sony BVM-D 20F1U with a BKM-142 HD card) that comes and goes.HELLLLLLP!
    Thanks!

Thank you for the quick reply! Is there any chance that I will get better performance with an AJA card? I spoke with a friend at the DR Group (a very early adopter of Final Touch) and they supposedly have the exact same machine config. and are getting full realtime play back in 10bit 4:2:2 @1080 29.97 and up to 24 fps in 4:4:4. The only difference is that they are using a Kona 3 card and they are using the last version of Final Touch, not Color. The system that they are running Color on is a Core 8 with an X1900.
I seem to be getting the same performance as I did with the Quadro as I did with a Geforce 7800 card (any thoughts?) I know that Final touch was built around the ATI platform but I can't find any X1900 cards that will work on a non-Intel machine. I was told that the card could be re-programmed through the Unix terminal but that Apple won't release that code to the public. Are you running X1900's on non-Intel machines? If so how does you performance compare? I guess the bottom line is should I take back the Quadro? I works great in Maya but that is about it. It can't even give me hi-fidelity Open GL rendering in After Effects and it takes up 2 slots. And for the price it seems like it should do more. Is Color more optimized for the ATI chipset and if so what is a good solution for my Quad PPC?
Also, any idea what the tearing or segmenting in my broadcast monitor is caused by? It looks as though it is displaying different frames at the same time. Kind of like they are offset i.e. the top half is frame 1 and the bottom is frame 2. This problem seems to come and go and does not appear in the Color preview window.
Ultimately is there any Mac system out there that can provide "real" realtime playback minimum of 1080 10bit 4:2:2 @ 29.97 using Color? I know that there is a correlation between the amount of manipulation and the playback performance, but is there something close? Is that asking too much?
Thanks again for any suggestions you might think of!

  • No realtime playback during RAM preview

Ever since I upgraded to the newest MacPro, AE has been unable to play a RAM Preview in realtime. Even during the most simple of compesitions, RAM preview fluctuates between 20fps and 59.94fps and will never "lock in" to realtime. Resolution is set to full and zoom is set to 100%. We have compared all the settings to other, less powerful, machines in our studio and still cannot make it play realtime.

    30 inch Apple Cinema Display
    ATI Radeon HD 5870
    OSX 10.6.6
    Kona LHe 9.1
    AE 10.5.0.253

I'm guessing the problem is with your Kona card.  AJA has been having issues with CS5.5 and they just released updated drivers and have split the Adobe app plugins into their own installer now on the Windows side.
Unfortunately, you say you're already using the Kona 9.1 drivers so you're in the same boat as me with the poor playback in RAM previews.
Removing the Kona card instantly put my RAM previews back to normal, but it's not a proper solution.
Here are some tips I received from AJA support on this issue a few days ago:
OPTIMUM AE Settings for best performance:
Make sure the AJA video preview setting matches the sequence.
Use a RGBA video preview setting and not RGB 10-bit.
In AE preferences -> video preview set Output Quality to Faster.
Go to Project Settings -> set color settings -> depth and set to 8-bits per channel.
Make sure you are viewing at 100% during playback.
I just put the Kona 3G card in last week and CS5.5 instantly had playback issues in both AE and Premiere.  I got the 9.1 drivers AJA released this week and everything was fine after that! Halfway through a project yesterday, my RAM previews started lagging again. I'm working with AJA to resolve and if I get it figured out, I will post the solution here.

  • Realtime playback for whole show?

I've had the biggest concern for Color for a while.
Doesn't Color allow realtime or near real time playback of the whole sequence, not just scanning clip to clip?
The only way I know that my show is looking right is by watching it in real time. This shows me errors a lot better than simply clip to clip.
This there a toggle I'm missing?
    -Eric

How does it play the whole timeline.
Summarized from the pdf manual inside Color (page 127):
Color has two playback modes. The default is Shot Mode, which is what you're experiencing, it plays back only the current shot and defaults with Loop turned on.
The second mode is Movie Mode, which plays back between the In and Out point. The first time you enter it it sets the In Point at the first shot in Track 1 and the Out point at the last shot in Track 1. You can set your own In / Out using the I and O keys.
To toggle between modes press Shift-Control-M.
If you haven't already I strongly suggest you read up on the Maintain Frame Rate options, as that'll strongly impact if you see every frame of your corrections or not and how smooth the timeline plays back. All of which is determined by how intensive your corrections are - the more secondaries, masks, ColorFx nodes the less likely you'll get anything near Realtime performance.
I've gotten into the habit of just rendering everything out and watching playdown in FCP. I take extensive notes then go back into Color and start my tweaks. Less than ideal but I know exactly what Color is giving me and I'm watching in Real Time.

  • R3D Realtime Playback working in source but not on timeline.

    Hi!
I'm using Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 and facing a very peculiar problem. I have a few Red One 4K files and a few Red Epic 5K files. I can import them into Premiere Pro just fine. When i play them back in the source window, they playback just fine without any stutters. Then I drag them into a new sequence/timeline. I see the yellow MPE bar as well. This is when the full-res files start stuttering and refuse to playback in realtime. This is without adding any effects onto them.
Curiously enough, this used to work for me for 4K files with two layers of curves adjustment as well. This suddenly stopped working.
    My configuration:
    Intel Core i7 980X
    24GB DDR3 RAM
    Nvidia GTX580
The files are on RAID 0 storage.
    Any ideas anyone?

It's set to Full. In which case it won't play back the 4K/5K file on the timeline. If i'm working at 1/2 res, it'll play it back smoothly even after i add three layers of curves and two layers of the 3-way CC. This problem has creeped up suddenly. It never happened before!

  • Why do I get a perfect realtime playback in iMovie but a jumpy one in Premier CS6?

If it's my hardware then I should get the problem in both programs. Am on a Macbook Pro, 10.6.8, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M and have tried setting playback to 1/4 quality. I'm not using any crazy effects, the footage is HD from a Gopro. iMovie has no problem doing what I've tried doing so far in Premier.
Thanks for any help, am hoping I'm just missing some obvious setting as I'd like to be able to do my editing in Premier.
    Leah =)

GoPro pretty much expects you to convert to the Cineform codec for editing. So much so, in fact, they bought the company.
The program is free. I suggest that you take a look at it before doing any more editing of GoPro footage.

  • Program freezes realtime playback glitchy

Hi I am new to motion and have just started using it. But while im working on a project very often it will freeze up and the little mouse color wheel will come up for a few seconds and then start doing everything I was clicking. It does this very often which makes editing time much longer. Is there some settings I should change? My computer is new this year and 4GB ram.
Also when I am playing back my project some spots are glitchy and wont smooth out

hate to give you bad news but I have had the worst time with motion. I also have a new mac pro with 8gb ram however it appears the programs relies almost entirely on the GPU (graphics card) for its processing. You can change the resolution your real time playback to draft but then it looks like crap. I have noticed adding a filter to anything kills my playback since it tries to add the filter in real time. Try not using filters and turn off layers you are not using.

  • No realtime playback of titles

Importing simple livetype project and placing title clip into timeline, the clip shows up as "unrendered" when I try to play it back in timeline. Same result whether rendered mov or project file is imported. I can even open old projects that never had this problem and now those titles will not play back w/o rendering. Had to trash preferences yesterday and guessed I have set something wrong in my new preferences. But cannot seem to find the problem. Also had changed to higher res monitor, but problem persists when I hook up old monitor. Working in DV on a nice, fast dual G5 with 2MB RAM.

I'm guessing the problem is with your Kona card.  AJA has been having issues with CS5.5 and they just released updated drivers and have split the Adobe app plugins into their own installer now on the Windows side.

  • Export Motion to Final Cut - realtime playback

Hi, I have a Motion4 file with FullHD greenscreen shot keyed out, I imported the .motn file to FC, but it doesn't play in real time. Is there a way to make FC play the .motn file in realtime (set lower resolution, quality etc. somewhere) ? Or do I have to export a QT movie out of Motion? Thanks

Thanks Adam... Another thing is, I do have to use Animation codec to maintain Alpha channel, right? When I use it, my computer (2x2.8 Quad-Core MacPro) isn't able to play the keyed out and background stream together...

  • Realtime playback even when red bar displays?

I created some crawling text in CS6 and it shows the red bar above it indicating from what I understand that it will require rendering, however, it seems to play back fine in real time in my Timeline. Does the red bar mean something else?
    Thanks.

  • PE 3.0 -- Video playback jitters -- content pulled from VOB files

Thanks in advance for any advice!   I pulled 10 minutes of video from a DVD into Elements 3.0, edited it on the timeline and exported it to a DVD.  The original content is a dub of a finished TV show burned by a production company.... it's the only copy we can get.  My edit excerpts the part of the show that's about a non-profit I help out.
My final output has "jitters" in shots that have motion.  The faster the motion -- like zooms or pans -- the more noticible the jitter.  You can almost ignore it when playing back on a computer, but on a TV it's really obvious.
The only changes I made to the clips after import were:
Interpret Footage => conform to D1/DV NTSC widescreen 16:9 (1.2)
(so that footage matched the original 16:9 format.)
Where do I start troubleshooting?  The initial project setttings?  Or is this an export problem?
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Mark
PS: On the original content, it says on screen before the show rolls that the master is "720P 59.94 16:9" -- but I don't know is if that's just the master or also the DVD

Thanks for all the helpful replies. (Sorry I didn't understand the points system; thought I could tag you all as helpful.)    Elements 3.0 doesn't have that DVD or Hard Drive project setting, but it looks like this is where the trouble lies.
Ridiculous thing is, I have Premiere Pro 5.03... but it will not ingest the VOB files.  Each file truncates to 30 seconds, even if the file is already pulled off the DVD and in a folder.   I could not find a solution online to that problem, so I tried Elements which did it easily, except for this jitter.
    AVAILABLE PROJECT PRESET SETTINGS:
In PE 3.0, I can change the default project settings by creating a new default preset.  In the VIDEO section, If I start with DV - NTSC Widescreen (versus Adobe HDV or DV-Pal) I can create a new preset but it apeears my only changable video options are safe areas and display format.  The "Fields" drop down is grayed-out, defaulted to "Lower Field First" and can't be changed.  (Nothing else I change seems to make it available to change.)
    DISPLAY FORMAT dropdown:
        >30 fps drop-frame timecode
        >30 fps NON-drop-frame timecode
        > frames
Are these settings of any use for this problem?
In the GENERAL section, I can open a dialog called PLAYBACK SETTINGS.   Choices there are broken into "Realtime Playback" and "Export."   In Realtime Playback, I can check or uncheck "Desktop Video."   The default is checked, which let's me select an "External Device" or a setting for aspect Ratio Conversion."   External Device Choices are:
         None
         DV 29.97i (720x480)
         DV 25i (720x576)
         DV 23.976p (720x480)
Those same external device choices are available under EXPORT.
Maybe Elements 3.0 just can't solve this problem...  Any thoughts?

  • PP CC 2014 - Extremely slow performance, weird realtime preview issues, constant crash/lockup

    Hiya
Since updating to the latest version of Premiere, it has become practically unusuable - it has become incredibly slow (I'm running on a 2012 Mac Pro with 20gb RAM (16gb allocated to PP), Mavericks) and realtime playback creates errors like below screencaps... The first is a greenscreen comp of 2 presenters in front of a simple video background and the car image should just be white text title on video.
Also been experiencing regular complete system lockups while using Premiere.
    Here's my system specs.
    2 x 2.4Ghz 6-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro
    20GB ram
ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB graphics card
    Running 6TB eSata Raid (6gbit)
    100gb free on System Drive
Open to any suggestions (Have done all the usual restarts, preference repairs, software updates etc).
    Thanks

  • Bad playback with 2-monitor setup

I've got a working 2-monitor setup connected through my ATI X1900 (a Viewsonic A91f+ and a 50" Sony VGA LCD). When I choose to view playback through the Sony (All frames, Digital Cinema Desktop Preview-any setting), the preview only shows the frame where the playback head is parked. If I try to play, I only hear the sound, and the picture stays frozen. If I drag the playback head through the clip or sequence, everything stays caught up. But realtime playback won't work.
All software is current, for FCP 5.1.2. What am I doing wrong?

and your canvas and viewer windows are set to "fit to window"...

  • Playback on external monitor

    Hello!
I recently purchased a new dell 22 inch monitor to accompany my 20 inch alum imac. (and to replace a crappy old dell monitor).
Previously i used that monitor for fullscreen playback of my HDV video out of Final Cut Pro (FCS2). I just upgraded to snow leopard.
So i hook up the new monitor (VGA until the DVI adapter comes in).. looks very nice. Go into FCP and change it to play on the external monitor just like before.
But now when i try to play, it only shows the frame i started playback at (audio is fine) and then updates the frame when i stop playback. The picture looks amazing.. but i kind of need the realtime playback! On the old monitor it played back fine. (i have it set to "show all frames"
Specs. Mac OS X 10.6 SL. 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo w/ 4gb ram. Video is stored on FW 800 drive with 500gb. FCS 2.
If you need anymore info please let me know!

Try using Final Cut Pro Rescue to delete some preferences.
Can you test it using full screen with another format besides HDV to see if it works?
