RealVNC Timeout after idle with Screen Share

Hello-
Dual G5 Powermac running downstairs as a server with screen sharing enabled,
Windows XP SP3 Laptop Running RealVNC to use remote desktop.
Everything works fine, but when I minimize RealVNC and come back to it a little while later (at least 5min), it wont refresh and then when I retry the connection I get a blip of the 'attempting to connect...' window and then nothing. It seems as though if I let the connection sit without input for a little while, the connection times out and will not let me reconnect. Is there a setting in OSX screen sharing to prevent this, or maybe in my realVNC viewer?
Could it be because I using port forwarding and www.dyndns.com to allow me a URL to use outside my intranet?
thanks.

Back to my Mac has been unreliable for me (and a lot of other users) ever since the Mavericks upgrade, 10.9.0.
I find that if I turn all screen sharing off, then back on again, remote macs can share my screen. But the fix usually lasts just a few days, sometimes as little as 24 hours.
So everything depends on me remembering to open Sys Prefs and then toggle Back to My Mac (in iCloud) and Remote Login, File Sharing, and Screen Sharing (all in Sharing) in the morning before I go to work. If I remember, I'm able to do screen sharing that day from work. If I forget, I'll get errors when I try to Screen Share via the link that appears under Shared in the Finder sidebar. The link is reliably present in the Finder sidebar, it just doesn't work if I haven't refreshed the Sys Prefs settings.
Hope this workaround is helpful. Wish they had a more permanent fix.

  • Command Tab Bug with Screen share

I often screen share to PC while working, After about an hour, the command tab function will fail. Closing the screen share will solve the issue, but its annoying that it fails in the first place. Any ideas on how to solve this little bug?

can't get the exact behaviour, but my Finder sometimes requires two presses of Apple N before a new window will appear. Also, sometimes even after launching the Terminal, focus is not given to Terminal, instead it remains with the Finder. Clicking on the Terminal window doesn't switch to Terminal, as expected. There is no way to get the focus to be the app in the foreground. I have to control click it in the dock and quit. note that it hasn't crashed (no force quit option), it simply refuses to focus.

  • Audio with Screen Share?

Is there any way to get the audio from a computer that you are connected to with screen sharing?
I often work from home and use Screen Share to connect to work computer. It would be extremely helpful if I could hear the audio from that computer. I don't expect crystal clear audio, just enough to hear in and out points on quick edits.
    Thanks,
    Heather

i've never heard of audio coming across the screen sharing window... would like to know more, if it is an option... is it an option in preferences or something?
The reference to iChat was audio converstation with the person on the other end while you are trying to diagnose their system.
It is NOT the remote Mac generated audio.
regarding iChat, last time i heard, iChat requires a dotMac account for most of its features...
iChat works with AOL Instant Messaging (AIM) and you can get a free account. I have been using this with my Mom to do text, audio, and video chats with my Mom since Mac OS X 10.3 came out.
And more recently iChat has added support for XMPP (aka Jabber) instant messaging networks. I use XMPP with my companies IM service, as well as Google's GTalk IM service.
i only occasionally use iChat with google, but no audio goes across, nor file xfers... i don't know how iChat would work either since i think iChat would require someone to be at the destination computer to accept the connection... do you have more info about how this works and what "network servers" it requires to work?
A donation-ware plug-in extension for iChat called Chax adds a iChat preference option to auto-accept an invitation to share the screen for a list of specified users.
But again, this is ONLY useful for getting audio from the person sitting on the other end.
But the auto-answer for screen sharing can help solve the, how do I get through the home NAT router and how to I find the remote comptuer. iChat is providing that service.

  • My Mac glitches after startup with screen flashing and freezing up.

Why does my Mac begin to flash then freeze after start up?

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    Any change?
Have you blown the dust out lately?

  • Problems with Screen Share with Back to My Mac

Hi everyone, I'm at a loss right now... I had Screen sharing previously working with my fathers Macbook air (using my apple ID) so i could help him with troubleshooting from time to time.  I just recently did a clean reinstall of Mountain Lion on my iMac.  I am in the process of setting everything up again but it doesn't seem to be working. I have done what the directions call for but it's still not working.  Not sure if it has to do with my clean install and having to redo something on my fathers computer too.  another strange problem is that in the sharing section of my Macs system prefs, under screen sharing I am unable to remove any users from the Allow Access for section.  the button does nothing at all.  can someone do a step by step on how to make that connection to my fathers computer.  and yes Back to my mac is turned on on both computers.  thanks
ps. I just noticed that i have a couple of Unknown users under my
Allow Access for section, and i can't delete them either.

I see that. The problem is that the log in choice only lets me share the screen of my admin account. I want to share the screen of a standard account which is where I do all my work. So I connect to the standard account and then when I go to share the screen I get the "share screen request"
I just tried to log out of the admin account and into the standard remotely and that worked. Strange way to do it but as long as it works I'm fine with it.
Thanks for the response, it did solve my question because  it helped me figure out how to do it.

  • Samaba sharing is disabled after reboot, with incorrect share config

    Hi all,
I bought my macbook pro with OS X 10.4. Ever since I've upgraded, I'm unable to get my samba server to work correctly. I have a Cent OS server running samba, and all my other clients can connect to it, so I know its not an issue with the Windows clients. I would like to share my Movies folder so my wife can watch videos I download. Some are in iTunes, some are Divx. I've done the following.
    1. Go to System Preferences -> Sharing
    2. Under "shared folders", I click the plus and add the directory "Movies"
    3. I set my account to "read only" and "everyone" to "read only"
    4. Go to System Preferences -> Accounts
    5. Select Guest Account and check "Allow guests to connect to shared folders". I leave guest login disabled.
    6. Reboot
With the above steps, I expect that the only share listed would be "Movies" and that I can access it with an anonymous samba client. However, I randomly get folders I'm not expecting. For instance, this is how I tested my setup.
    1. On a windows computer I telent to the correct samba ports. "telnet 10.10.1.101 139" and "telnet 10.10.1.101 445". Both connect to the socket, so I'm ok at the firewall level.
    2. Test what shares are listed with "smbclient" on my mac. I enter "smbclient -L 10.10.1.101" in the command prompt. When prompted for a password, I just press enter. I get the following output.
    $ smbclient -L 10.10.1.101
    Password:
    Anonymous login successful
    Domain=[NINE] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.25b-apple]
    Sharename Type Comment
IPC$ IPC IPC Service (TODD NINE’s Computer)
todd nine's public folder Disk TODD NINE's Public Folder
    Anonymous login successful
    Domain=[NINE] OS=[Unix] Server=[Samba 3.0.25b-apple]
    Server Comment
    MACINTOSH-3 TODD NINE
    Workgroup Master
    NINE
Definitely not what I've configured via the gui! Also, whenever I reboot and go into the sharing gui the "Share files and folders using SMB" is always unchecked. It would seem that my settings are hosed and the gui isn't correctly persisting my settings and restarting the Daemons. I'm not sure which plist files to delete to start with fresh settings, and I'm reluctant to start blasting critical system files without being sure of what I'm doing. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I've already followed a couple of how to's that worked for most people, but they didn't resolve my issues.
    Thanks,
    Todd

Presumably related to this problem is that if I try to restart the svc it gets disabled.
For example (while tailing /var/svc/log/site-bind9:default.log in background):
    bash-3.00# svcs bind9
    STATE STIME FMRI
    online 3:37:45 svc:/site/bind9:default
    bash-3.00# svcadm restart bind9
    [ Apr 17 03:38:07 Stopping because service restarting. ]
    [ Apr 17 03:38:07 Executing stop method ("/opt/bind/var/svc/method/bind9 stop") ]
    [ Apr 17 03:38:07 Method "stop" exited with status 0 ]
    [ Apr 17 03:38:07 Disabled. ]
    bash-3.00# svcs bind9
    STATE STIME FMRI
    disabled 3:38:07 svc:/site/bind9:default
Any ideas what is wrong with this svc (manifest posted above) ?

  • Screen Share - Change what to display & video quality

    Hi LCSS Team,
I have been playing around with screen share and have it working in collaborative (both ends can share/control their screens).
Upon initial selection of deskop/app/window, is there a way to allow users to change what to display without having to
    start/stop?
    Use case:
    - User A is viewing user B screen. User B would like to change view from desktop to a specific window.
Also, the screen share video feed is very pixelated. I have tried it multiple settings including what you guys sent
me. I am trying to get it to Skype like quality. Is that even possible?
    Thanks,
    Michael

    Hi octoguy,
iChat makes hardware and connection speed checks as it starts up.
This gives you the framerate and bit rate duirng a call.
Lets say that your processor gives your iChat 15 fps
This will be the rate that you will then see to a another Mac.
The same computer is likely to get 10 frames per sec to a PC.
This is some part due to the PC putting a fair amout of effort into producing a clear detailed pic.
On some PCs this setting for the video pic is so high that the audio will drop out completely.
The cure is to bring the PC preview to the front (tabs)
Then click on the small icon that appears to the right and adjusting the slider that appears to the left.
This will incease the frame rate and bit rate from the PC. It makes the video look smoother although the actual quality has gone down (you may not be able to judge this quality difference by eye)
As general rule you will get about 2/3rds of the normal Mac to Mac framerate shown in the Connection Doctor. It also seems to take about 50% more Connection speed to get the same quality video.
So Mac to Mac min is 100Kbps where as Mac to PC will need about 150kbps.
The quality drop from 15 frames a sec to 10 frames a sec does make the video generally more blocky but does also depend a fair bit on the processor power of the PC and the camera used.
I know that sounds a little vague but there are really many variables that can be a factor.

  • Screen share prob

Upgraded mbp and Mac mini server today to lion. I access the Mac mini from my mbp with screen share, except now I can't connect. It says screen share is running but no window shows.

I posted this here by accident.  I've reposted it in the Lion forum for a better response.

  • Transfering files via screen share

I am able to screen share with my powerbook and my iMac. I tried to drag a folder with photo files on it from my iMac to the powerbook, but it didn't work. Any suggestions? Maybe easier to connect firewire, but wanted to try with screen share.
    Thanks

you can't do this with screen share, sorry. You can do it using file sharing if your computers are on the same network.

  • After the 10.9.2 upgrade I can't screen share with any Macs using Back to my Mac.

I did the 10.9.2 combo upgrade on a bunch of Macs I manage and now I can't use Back to my Mac for screen sharing on any of them. Does this upgrade mess with the original settings? Any suggestions? Anyone else see this?

  • Video Chat and Screen Share Crash after a few seconds

I currently have a Mac Pro and an 802.11N airport extreme. I can do a speedtest and get downloads of 14mbps supposedly.
Whenever I start a video chat or screen share with someone (I just installed leopard tonight) It starts up and then after a few moments crashes and it wants me to send the error report to apple.
What could be the issue? Is it a firewall thing? Hardware glitch?
I have no idea, but would LOVE To get this fixed.
    Thanks

I have the exact same issue. Apple has already replaced the Airport Extreme but that did not help. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

  • Can't Video Chat or Screen Share with iMessages to iChat?

So I just recently got a new MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion to replace my white MacBook running Snow Leopard. I noticed iChat has been replaced by iMessages. All of my other Mac friends still use iChat. I didn't think this would be a huge difference, but I can no longer video chat or screen share with them.
I send them an invite, and they get an IM saying "[account] has sent you a video chat request". I'm registered under my AIM account, and so are they, so that's not the problem. When they send me invites, nothing happens. I get no notification, and it just shows "Waiting for response from [account]."
    So I thought "okay, I'll just re-download iChat from a third-party site".
The download link just takes me directly to Apple's page about Mountain Lion. So that's out.
There's no option in my security on iMessages to override this issue and allow unknown developers. I have "Allow AOL's servers to relay video chats" option selected under Privacy, and that does nothing, either.
What's the deal? Can I no longer video chat (or screen share) with "third party" chat clients via iMessages anymore?

    Hi,
I have tested my Messages (Ver 7.0.1 in OS X 10.8.2) to various versions of iChat (3, 4 and 5)
iChat 3 can send invites and open Video (Or Audio Only) chats to Messages.
The iChat 4 and 5 can Video Chat To and From Messages. (I was using AIM as I have more accounts I can play with)
I have even done 3 way Video chats in both Bonjour and AIM login using Messages and iChat 4 and 5.
I have just double checked between Messages and iChat 4 Offering the Messages Screen to the G4 (iChat 4) and I was successful.
Screen Sharing requires a Random port for the VNC connection that does the "picture" bit.
However if you had it working in iChat then this should still be working in the Messages set up.  (Basically your router is doing UPnP or is an Apple Base Station doing Port Mapping Protocol)
Also iChat will not work in Mountain Lion (even if you grab the iChat 6 version)
Each version is very specific to the OS version it is with.
For instance during OS X 10.4 it got to OS X 10.4.11 but during those same increases iChat got to  version 3.1.9
There was no update to Messages until OS X 10.8.2 making Messages version 7.0.1
Those small changes tend to mean that version 7.0 will not work with OS X 10.8.2  ( or the other way round)
It is all to do with the support apps and frameworks that help the app to work.

Installed a Time Capsule, now I can't access my mac mini server.  I see the files/folders, but cannot screen share with the mini from my macbook pro.  Any help?  Error below when trying to use the "screen share" button in Finder.  Macbook Pro and Mac Mini are using Mountain Lion 10.8.2.

There are many discussions about failing after changes in Lion.. I haven't seen the equivalent ML yet.. the TC may not be root cause, just the initiator of the problem.
It could be the BTMM associated with the TC.
