Reappearing deleted messages?

Recently, whenever I've deleted messages in my Mail inbox, they keep reappearing in my inbox minutes later.  I've tried deleting my deleted messages, but that hasn't worked.  I don't think they're even making it to the trash for some reason.  Has this happened to anyone/does anyone know how to fix this?  Thanks!

I am doing this beacuse in my space on my phone my doucments and data are taking up 9GB of space, and i don't know why other than in my phone it says messages are taking up 8GB or so. I am running ios 7.0. I have synced my phone with itunes, backed up, reboots after deleting the texts, they never vanish, i have even restored from itunes and restored from a backup that didn't include the texts after i deleted them.

actually better to reset your phone and reinstall the latest firmware again after that restore your back up it should be ok

deleted messages keep re-appearing, others seem to disappear and reappear at random

I have the same problem. Thankfully one which was missing came back. I printed it out and made a PDF of it since it was an important one I'd been looking for.
I have three icloud email accounts which folders for each one. Now they mostly come up in my inbox instead of the correct folder and they won't move to the correct one.
    Come on Apple, fix this.

  • Email issues after Yosemite upgrade.  Several things are happening, I delete messages only to get a error indicating that I can't delete them or if I do delete them, they reappear sometime later.

I use Apple mail on an IMAC & IMAC Mini.  As I move from one to the other these email issues persist on both.
I try to clean out my email by deleting emails.  I sometimes get an error message indicating I can't delete the message or when I do delete the message, then sometime later or when I go on the other computer these deleted messages reappear.  I am also getting emails from some senders but the actual content belongs to another person.
I had none of these problems prior to upgrading to Yosemite.
    Any suggestions would be helpful.

  • Apple Mail 2.1.3 (OS X 10.4.11) deleted message keeps reappearing

I sent a mail that exceeded the maximum size of the recipients mailbox. When the mail-delivery message came back, my system HD was full and the incoming mail could not be stored. After I got my Mac back running, the mail-delivery-error-message keeps reappearing – even after deletion.
When I delete the message in the inbox and in the trash, it reappears as soon as I click on "Inbox". If I open the message and click the "Delete Message" icon, it stays and appears in my trash as often as I clicked it. How can I get rid of that message?
    Thanx.

If you know what you are doing it may be simplest to backup all emails and Mail settings and progressively remove Mail settings and files until you find the problem.
Make sure you do not delete more than you have to from the server.
Perhaps start by checking the server via web access to see that it looks OK at that end and does not have your large file stuck somewhere.

  • Previously deleted messages are re-downloaded, not removed from server??

I have a POP email account that I access from my iMac using Mail. I regularly delete mail from my inbox in Mail, so there are only a few hundred messages in the inbox. But the other day I logged onto my mail account via the web and discovered thousands of my previously deleted messages still in my inbox on the server. I opened Mail Preferences and discovered that the checkbox "Remove mail from Server ... when I move it from my inbox" was not checked, so I checked that box. However, I figured that would only cause future messages that are removed form my inbox to be removed from the server, but would not do anything about the thousands of previously deleted messages that were still on the server. So I also clicked the button labeled "Remove Now". I figured that would cause Mail to tell the server to remove all the old messages on the server that had previously been removed from the local Mail inbox.
The next day I discovered that thousands of old messages I had already deleted (many of them long ago) had mysteriously reappeared in my Mail inbox. And of course, checking the account via the web, I discovered they were still on the server too. What did I do wrong? I thought Mail would tell the server to delete all those old messages. Instead it seems to have told the server to download them all to my Mail inbox again, the exact opposite of what I intended. I don't know if this is a disconnect between the Mac Mail client and the mail server, or if I misunderstood the purpose of these options in the Mail preferences dialog.

    Hello,
I have never tried this exact action, but I think the Remove Now will not do much, with When Moved from the Inbox. This would require the action of removing the message, after this setting has been changed. I don't think it would remove any previously moved from the Inbox, because no check to correlate the current contents of Inbox to a POP account.
Does this make sense, to you?
However, there would appear to be some corruption in the file to prevent duplicate downloads, or messages previously downloaded.
In Mail 2.x, Apple introduced a way to look a the server, of even POP accounts. To do this, control-click on any inbox or any mailbox, and choose Get Info. Once the dialogue window is presented, and if you have more than one account, choose the account, and you can not observe the server contents, but also choose and delete individual messages.
Keep us posted about future behavior.

  • IMAP Deleted Messages AND Unread Messages

I've read quite a few threads about two seemingly persistent problems using Mail and IMAP servers: a) Messages deleted within Mail "reappear" in the client's in-box, and b) messages read (and marked as read -- no blue dot) "reappear" as unread messages (this latter problem occurs for me, even if moved to a folder on my IMAP account). I have to admit that I've gotten lost in the twists and turns of these discussions and I'm reluctant to start trying things that may make matters worse.
I've tried to extract the right things to do here -- and, so far, only have checked that I am indeed saving deleted messages on the server.
May I ask: In summary terms, are there a few standard fixes for making deleted messages go away and read messages stay that way? Thanks!!
    PB 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I'm using Mail 2.1 (752/752.2) talking to a Cyrus IMAP server running on the same machine. Messages are kept on the server. I have a GnuPG mail plugin. Ever since the last update of Mail I've had the problem of random "read" messages returning to the "unread" state, and not just in INBOX, but in other folders, all on the server. I've read them, did "Synchronize" and they soon show up as "unread" again. I've read them, quit Mail, restarted Mail, and they are "unread" again. Sounds like what other people are seeing.
So I wrote a program that talks directly to the IMAP server to see what it thinks about the "read" status. Sure enough, messages that have a sitcky "unread" state do not have the IMAP "\Seen" flag set. In other words Mail is not setting this flag for some reason. (I've check this several times, before and after Mail is supposed to mark a message "read," after quiting Mail, etc., and the "\Seen" flag is never set.)
If I use my prober program to manually set the "\Seen" flag on a message, then it stays "read." That message never again pops to the the "unread" state; however, random new messages get stuck in the "unread" state. So far the only way I have been able to mark these sticky messages as "read" is to talk directly to the IMAP server.
I believe this strongly indicates the problem lies in Mail itself and not the IMAP server. I believe there was some regression with this new version of Mail because I've never had the problem before. To conclusively prove Mail is at fault, though, I would have to eavesdrop on the communication between Mail and IMAP.

  • Unable to move or delete messages

    Hi
Recently I have had difficulty when trying to move or delete messages in mail. It does not affect all messages, and not always all of the time. For example, I tried to clear out my Sent folder yesterday. I was able to move or delete most, but three messages will usually grey-out when I try to delete or move them. On the few occasions they have disappeared when I delete them, they reappear the next time I log into Mail.
Yesterday I also went through a folder and moved several hundred unwanted mails to the Trash. However, when I now go to Trash to check I have not deleted something I want to keep, only a tiny proportion of the mails that should be in Trash appear (I have not emptied Trash since clearing out the folder). I'm not sure if this is a related problem or something else entirely.
I have deleted the Cache.db file and moved the Mail folder from the Cache Folder to the desktop, and rebuilt permissions, but these have not made any difference.
Any suggestions on how to solve this problem will be gratefully received.
    Thanks
    Phil

I was responding to other suggestions in this thread regarding excessive time to download mails, an issue that I also had - are you saying that those solutions are incorrect?
Without knowing exactly which suggestion you were following, it's very difficult to say, and speculating would be making assumptions which could very well be wrong.
Who is your email provider, and what kind of email account are you dealing with: POP, IMAP, or both?
If you have just a POP account, the solution could be one of two different things I can think of: either you need to rebuild you Mail index, or your preferences are corrupt and need to be recreated. Let's assume the best case for now, that you have a POP account and your Mail index is flaky. In that case:
    Quit Mail if it's running.
Go to Home/Library/Mail and delete any files that begin with "Envelope Index".
Restart Mail and wait for the index to be rebuilt, then check to see if the problem continues. If not, problem solved.
If it does continue, try this:
    Quit Mail if it's running.
Go to Home/Library/Preferences and remove the com.apple.mail.plist file.
Restart Mail, setup your POP account(s) again and Mail will find your existing mailboxes automatically. When it's done, check to see if the problem continues.
In either case, if you have any IMAP accounts, go to Home/Library/Mail and move the folders for those accounts to your Desktop after quitting Mail, before you do any other steps above.
    Post back with results.

  • Why do deleted messages return to my inbox later? How can I fix this problem?

Hours or sometimes days after I delete messages, they are returned to my inbox. Usually it's only one or two, so I simply delete them a second time. But this morning almost 30 returned.

When deleted messages reappear it is likiely that the Inbox is corrupted.
If you don't compact your folders regularly, performance can slow to a crawl, you can't store new messages anymore, start losing parts of messages or have deleted messages resurrected.
    This is what I suggest.
    * Move all good emails out of the Inbox into suitable folders for organising.
    * Delete any emails you do not want.
    * When Inbox is empty, right click on the Inbox folder and select 'Compact'.
This will remove all traces of 'marked as deleted' emails.
    * Then right click on the Deleted folder and select 'Empty Deleted'
    * Then right click on the Deleted folder and select 'Compact'

  • Mail keeps receiving deleted messages!!!

Running OS X version 10.9.5 on my macbook air...ongoing issue with MacMail. It keeps receiving old deleted messages. This is super frustrating. It is happening with all my email accounts. I go through and delete the old emails...a day later I sign in to mail and it downloads 1000 messages again! Its like Groundhog day...Help!! I tried deleting messagesalreadydownloaded files in the mail data folder as I saw someone posted that as a solution but it did nothing...the files just reappear.

You have multiple email accounts, you will need to check how you have your server(s) set up to handle your mail.
Go to Mail, go to Preferences, go to Accounts, go to Mailbox behaviors and see the options you may have set.

  • POP Email Deleted Message Bug

On my work POP email account (needs to be non-IMAP) if I delete an email from the phone it shows back up as an unread email if I get a new email on any of my email accounts (but only in the hub/home screen) and it does not show up in my work email account even though it says there is an unread message.
I have to "delete from handheld and server" to stop the message from reappearing on my phone.
You're going to say the server is telling the phone it's still there.  Ok, so why then does it not show up in the email account and only on the hub screen.  As soon as I enter the hub the message is no longer anywhere to be found, or if I read the unread message that came in, the deleted message goes away on the home screen.
Of course when I get another new message it's there again...

I don't know if this applies to your situation, but I've noticed 2 reasons this might occur, one from personal experience and the other from reading the forums.
For me, I had trouble downloading email with pictures when I was on EDGE because as soon as I got the alert, I went to look at the email. However, if I backed up and waited a couple minutes, it had time to download the everything and I was able to view it fine.
The other problem I've seen was people complaining about this until they realized they had filled the phone with so many songs and movies, there wasn't enough room left on the phone to download the pictures.
Yours sounds like it might be the first. Give it a sec to download the whole file before opening it. If that doesn't help I'm all out of answers. Sorry!
    Good Luck,
    Shaun

  • Deleted Message

I deleted a message yesterday but now, everytime I get a new message this deleted message reappears. The notification bar tells me I have 2 messages when there is only one new message. This deleted message only appears in the notification bar at the top of the screen and is a nightmare to get rid of. Pleas advise why this has happened and how I stop it.

  • How can I set up a new account without auto deleting messages on the server?

Ive got accounts on COMCAST.NET (are those imap accounts?) and when I created a user account on Thunderbird for one of them the autocreate process immedaitely started downloading messages from my server before I was able to set the "keep messages on server" flag. (Its been a few months, forgive me if I am not using the exact right option text but you get the idea.)
How can I create a Thunderbird account that will download all the message on my server (comcast.net) and leave them all there?
That's the only thing keeping me from switching to Thunderbird. Please help - comcast's online web client is not the most bug free thing in the world.
(Note, I am setting up a new win7 system, had been using OE 6 on winXP. I assume I am better off trying this than running OE in XP in a virtual window - and even if I moved my old message bases from XP I still need to create an account that won't immediately start downloading/deleting messages from my server before I can configure it not to.)
    Any help appreciated.

Comcast only offers POP accounts, and one way to set up the account and enter all the settings before it connects to the mail server, might be to do it Offline:

The server settings are given [http://customer.comcast.com/help-and-support/internet/setting-up-thunderbird/ here], but the method is for Online account setup.

  • Why are deleted messages not going to deleted folder

In Account settings > server settings I have set it to move deleted messages to a particular folder but thunderbird appears to be permanently deleting messages as I can't find them anywhere.

  • Delete messages from server?

    Hi Guys,
I have a question regarding mail management.
    Here is my situation:
I have a GMX e-mail account; when I manage my e-mail on a computer (any computer), I always use the web-based e-mail straight from the website. I have this e-mail address configured in Mail on my iPad as an IMAP account. When I check my mail via iPad, it shows me my current inbox, but if I delete messages from iPad, it moves the message to trash, but does not reflect this on the server. So when I go to login to my account from a regular computer, any e-mail(s) that I have deleted through my iPad are still in my inbox at the GMX website.
On my iPad, I have turned Push to Off and I have Fetch set to manual, whenever I launch Mail. I have tried hitting the refresh on my iPad after I move a message to Trash, and my iPad's Mail settings are set to move deleted items to the "Trash" folder on the GMX server. Sending and receiving e-mails are no problem.
What am I doing wrong here? I am tired of deleting messages on my iPad (such as spam) and then having to go onto a computer and login to GMX and delete them again.
Btw, same exact issue on my iPhone with exact same e-mail settings.
    Thanks,
    Emile

    Thanks for the tip, Ralph.
I just went over to the GMX website and went to their support forum and apparently this is a known problem when accessing e-mail through an IMAP or POP3 e-mail client. A post was made at the end of August saying they are aware of the problem and are trying to fix it.
I've had this issue with my GMX account since my first-generation iPhone and they've just realized it a month and a half ago. I wonder how long it's going to take for them to repair the issue, sheesh!
I will mark this thread as resolved but since I just have to wait for GMX to fix the problem on their side. At least we got to the bottom of this, thanks for the help guys.
