Reapply thermal paste? Last gen black MacBook fans running.

Hi.
I have a black MacBook (MacBook4,1) that seems to get pretty hot sometimes. It happens even when I'm not running Illustrator, Aperture, or Photoshop. It can also happen when I visit a site without flash.
I had to replace the top case last year because someone poured water into the keyboard.
I'm thinking I may have ruptured or otherwise unseated the heatsinks, which may have displaced some of the thermal paste's contact with the heatsink. The computer was purchased in early 2008, so it's kind of old.
Would it benefit me to replace the thermal paste between the processor and the heatsink? How much of a pain is it to do that?

My computer is a bit older than yours and I have never seen that problem with this machine.
Have you checked Activity Monitor (Applications>Utilities) to see if any processes are using more than 30% of your CPU?

  • Reapply thermal paste and get more noise?

Hi guys, from what I read, reapplying thermal paste reduces the heat but makes the fans go on much faster.
For those who reapplyed it, does it go on too often or only when processor is used at a certain level (say, 50%)?
    Thanks!

T9600 in a T500 isn't going to cause your laptop to melt down. I have a T9900 in my current T500, and it is working just as well as when i had the P8600.
These vacuum cooler are pretty much useless in these large thinkpads, and sometimes will cause other issues. Some of these external plug in fans can cause a path crossover between the directional flow of the cool intake air and the hot exhaust air, thus causing an area with stagnant air pocket, which means it will actually cause more harm than good.

  • Last years black MacBook good option?

    Good morning.
I was in my local BB yesterday and saw last years black MacBook marked down as a clearance. It could be had for, what I thought, is a very attractive prcie.
Now, I know alot depends on what I'll be doing with it, etc., but, is it still a good option (being it's an older machine) especially now given the savings (at least three hundred).
    Thanks.

If youre talking about the late 2007 refresh (Santa Rosa) and if the price is right why not? Its natural for consumers to want the latest and the greatest. But if you value your money and this model does what you want why not?
Plus you can max out the RAM to 4GB for about 100-120 USD and have a nice machine.
Hey the Late 2007 model was the newest and the greatest for a whole 3 months :P

  • MacBook fan running high most of the time after HDD/Hard-drive Upgrade

    Hi guys,
I've just recently upgraded my MacBook white's (MacBook5,2, 2GHZ duo core, 4GB ram) stock harddrive to a WD 2.5" black 750GB. After which, I noticed my macbook fan running at high speeds majority of the time... Even when just doing light weight stuff on it, such as surfing the net using Safari or even just leaving my computer idle after startup.
I did a clean install twice, the second was too see if it was really just a badly installed OS, but the problem still persisted, well at least till I decided to come here to type the post =P (maybe my macbook's scared about being talked about). Do note, that I did a pc migration each time.
After the upgrade, My fan usually runs at about 5000-6200 rpm, but right now as I'm typing this post, its surprisingly alot lower then what I've been experiencing. About 3000rpm-4000rpm.
As for the harddrive temperature, I noticed it runs between the 37 degree to 40 degree celsius range, so I'm guessing the hard-drive temperature sensor isn't busted, which was the problem for others from what I've read from other discussions here.
Also, when I boot my windows partition, the fan doesn't go as crazy, but it eventually will too.
Any idea what the problem could be? =s Or could it be that my MacBook can't handel 7200rpm hard drives =/ If so I'd probably downgrade to a 1TB WD blue =s
On top of that, does any one know if the 2.5" WD blue are as reliable as the 2.5" WD blacks? As I'm heistant to downgrade as I've read that the blues have a higher failure rate, and wouldn't want that happening. Oh and I'm not considering an SSD for this particular MacBook at the moment, as I may upgrade in another two years or so!
    Thank you!
    Edwin

    Hey Mende1,
Well I guess I'll try returning the drive at the end of this week then my fan seemed to have slowed down abit since the upgrade, it's sorta spinning around 3000rpm now. I'm not sure if it's gonna be the same thoughout, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't spin as much as it did when I had my old HDD on. So I'm giving it a few more day probably till the end of this week. And if the noise issue still surfaces I'll try a different hard drive! and update you on the results!
    Thanks alot Mende1!
    And hello there rauldoppler!
Well, firstly, I'm using a early 2009 MacBook white! The pre-unibody one. It's running on a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 4GB for ram.
As for the hard-drives, I'd actually reccommend you to upgrade to an Solid State Drive if you can afford it, but if you're like me who needs more memory space then boot speed etc, I guess a HDD will be fine =) As for which brand of hard-drives, I would actually recommend WD (their black drives especially, 5 year warranty, 7200rpm speed hehe), but right now I'm having the fan problems, so I'm not too sure anymore.
I did however, do quite abit of digging around on the net and concluded that WD was a better choices amoungst the rest... But yeah the fan issue is still something I didn't expect. All in all, I guess as for which drive is better, it really depends on your needs or wants, if it's for casual internet surfing and stuff, a WD blue HDD would be fine, or a black if you want a slightly faster boot speed etc at the expense of your battery life and all. If you however value blazing fast boot times and application start up times, go for an SSD. If you need the memory space more then anything then I'd say go for a HDD again too, as it's cheaper interms of gigabite to dollar ratio. (for example, the older 500GB version of my new WD black would cost USD $43, while a Samsung 500GB SSD Pro would cost $349) Also, You could do abit of reading up on SSDs if you're interested in it There's alot of plus points to it, like ALOT, and if the price tag wasn't so huge, I would have used it for my macbook already!
Lastly, I used a WD Black 750GB for my macbook upgrade. However, I'm gonna downgrade to a WD blue 1TB this weekend if the fan doesn't settle down over time Cause well, the fan noise is really an issue for me.
    Peace out guys!

My wife reports that her Macbook fan runs continually when playing Zynga games...internet games in facebook. I watched her, and it's true...if she quits the game the fan stops. Is this a potential problem? Seems that's all she does on that laptop... I suggested she stop playing the games, but that advice will not be heeded:) thx.

  • 3rd Gen Black Macbook Freezing...

    Hey all,
I finally got my brand new black macbook and love it! The only problem is that I've been having it freeze up a lot. It seems to be in conjunction with internet programs because it has only happened with Firefox (only a couple times) and everytime with any Torrent client. I've tried Transmission, Azureus, Bit Torrent, Tomato. What usually happens is that everything is fine and then out of no where the pinwheel shows up and I can either force quit but still have the program registered in the dock and no other program will open, or not even be able to force quit causing me to need to Command-Ctrl-Power for a forced restart (even this hasn't worked everytime). My macbook is brand new and I've done the hardware tests that came with the OS X and also the one that came with APP. Any help is greatly appreciated because I want this to work better than a windows comp, but so far no luck!

  • MSI X58M IOH Heatsink - Reapplying Thermal Paste

Hey guys, I just got a MSI X58M, and although I haven't tested temperatures yet, I want to deal with this IOH issue right now.
First off, is the IOH the one with the fins and the ICH the one with the MSI logo?
What procedures should I use for taking off both of these heatsinks?
How should I clean the existing paste off, and how should I reapply the Noctua NT-H1 I have?  More specifically, what materials do I need to clean off the heatsinks and what method should I use to reapply the thermal paste.  Then, how do I reinstall the heatsink onto the IOH/ICH?
    Thanks for your help!

Yes, the heatsink with the fins is the IOH. The Logo'd heatsink is the ICH. Before you take everything apart, I would recommend you read this link, & then the other links listed within it, to read & learn 'how to' should you decide to go ahead with a redo.

  • 1st gen Black MacBook - airport issues

I have a June 2006 Black MacBook that I recently upgraded to 10.5.6. Since then, I have had very poor airport connectivity. Where I once had excellent WiFi, I now have none. What the heck is going on?? I often must sit adjacent to the signal source in order to connect...even 10 feet of merely air space will cause my WiFi to fail. What's the point!

    HI,
Your Airport preference files might be corrupted as a result of the upgrade to 10.5.6.
    Try deleting this file. com.apple.airport.airportutility.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your MacBook. See if that makes a difference in the signal, of not...
Are you using an Airport Extreme Base Station? Airport Express? If so, try resettting.

  • MacBook Fans running fast

I have a early 2010 15in macbook pro running osx lion. 1st gen intel core i5 processor. For the past 3 or 4 weeks the fans have been at 3500rpm, despite CPU usage being at 3% and the temperature at 49 Degrees Celcius. They were at these speeds when I was running snow leopard. I have reset the smc, installed and uninstalled smc fan control (that didn't do anything) and done everything I can think of, (I have done hardware test, disk verification, and the rest) and nothing has worked. Anyone got any advice?

Yeah, only running Mail and stuff. Actually, 3500RPM is my iMac's maximum fan speed.
    I'll try the SMC reset.

  • Black Macbook fan not working

Have a 13.3 2.0 GhzBlack Macbook with 2 Gb Ram.
Fan stopped working, (I can see its not running on istat nano). The computer gets very hot, specially when working with video. It shuts down automatically.
Bought a new fan online and replaced it myself with Ifixit instructions. Still not working.
    Any ideas

could be a number of things.
Are you certain that you plugged the fan in to the motherboard correctly? Could one of the wires have been damaged during the installation? Of course the replacement fan could also be faulty, or the logicboard could have a problem. I'd start by rechecking your installation, or get hold of another fan. You really don't have many options beyond that.

  • I lifted my heatsink, do I need to reapply thermal paste?

    Hi evrybody.
So I bought a used Sawtooth about a week ago, and long story short the mobo might have been fried in an experiment. While the computer was down I took the CPU off the mobo to smell if it's fried as well. Then I took off the heat sink to check it out. So like my title says, do I have to re apply the paste?

    Thanks.

  • MBP 2006, Crash during login, black screen, fans running high speed.

    Hello.
I'm having problem with my MacBook Pro 2006 model. OSX 10.6.8.
When I boot into OSX and log in then the computer crashes with black screen and fan start running on high speed. It usually happends when I'm typing my password but sometimes I can log in but then it crashes usually soon.
I can boot into Safe mode and Single user mode and everything is normal there.
If I boot from OSX install CD same happens. Its crashes. Same with from Install USB stick and from Disk warrior disk. Safemode and sigleuser mode is no problem.
It started one year ago when I puted the computer to sleep and woke it up. Then it crashed. So I just stopped puting it to sleep. Then after few months it started doing this during login but after one or two restarts then it worked. And now she does it every time.
Nothing in logs that gets my attention. I've tryed resetting SMC and everything else I can reset.
    Anyone had this problem ?
    Best Regards.
    Sverrir

I've been having this same frustrating problem, with the same machine (A1150, 1.83Ghz) although mine does it with both the AC and the battery. I was hoping it was the battery and just replaced it (the old one was almost dead), to no avail.
I thought it was working okay in Windows under Bootcamp until one day it decided to show off the same black-out/wild spinning fans symptoms. Grrr.
I've since run the following repeatedly, all of which have come up with nothing: AHT, Memtest, Hardware Monitor, iStat. I've been furiously monitoring the logs and not seeing anything jump out. I also cleaned the caches with Leopard Cache Cleaner and OnyX, and did an archive & install of the OS a couple of times. Lastly, I created a new user to see if there were problems with my start-up. Problems persisted.
Right now the only time I can keep it running is if I'm in Safe Mode. Not helpful, particularly WRT making a backup (i.e., I won't be able to use Firewire ).
Any more ideas/advice on this would be very appreciated. I'm ready to hurl my puter out the window.

  • Macbook Fan runs way to often

Hi, I have had my macbook for about a year and a half. Recently in the past few months the fan seems to come on way too much. I realize that when many intensive programs are running it should speed up but for me it happens all the time. Even when running safari on simple sites it will kick up. When using ichat it kicks in every single time and is so loud that it causes feed back and makes it hard to video conference. I have tested with another macbook and only mine will have the fan on when performing the same operations.
I have taken it to the apple store and they insist that it is normal behavior. they even setup an ichat with another macbook in the store and it did not have the fan on but mine did and they still insisted it's normal.
I am wondering if anyone else experiences this and if there are any suggestions. I am considering replacing the fan but not sure if that will do anything. I appreciate any help or insight this matter.
    I have 2.16 processor.
    thanks!

First, download and install iStatMenus - VersionTracker or MacUpdate. You can use it to monitor temperatures and fan speed.
Open Activity Monitor, select All Processes from the drop down menu, click on the CPU% column once or twice to display in descending order.
You can then monitor temperatures and observe if any processes are using large amounts of CPU time. This can indicate a problem perhaps caused by corrupted preference files or caches.
I would also suggest some maintenance just in case. Download the free utility, AppleJack, also from the above referenced links. AppleJack installs as a Unix script, so to use it you must first boot the computer into single-user mode. It pretty much runs automatically. Read its documentation before using it.
The "normal" operating temperatures should be somewhere between 30ºC and 85ºC depending upon CPU and GPU load.

  • Macbook fan running at high rpm when doing nothing

My macbook a1181's fan is always running at a high rpm and a can't figure out why. I already checked the activity monitor, made sure there was no documents waiting to be printed (i have had this problem in the past), and I removed and cleaned the fan and vents. Could os x 10.7.5 be part of the problem? I had absoutly no issues with 10.6.8.

Check your activity monitor. Sounds like you have a program running in the back ground your not aware of.
You might also try to reset the SMC and/or PRAM.

  • MacBook fan running very loudly

I have been having issues with my MacBook overheating and causing the fan to run very loudly (so loudly I can't listen to music or watch videos on it very well). I have had the motherboard replaced twice this year alone by Apple and I still have coverage till November of this year. They told me if I keep it on a flat surface (like a desk), the problem shouldn't keep happening. More times than none, I only have one application running like Safari or Firefox with only one page open and still the computer is incredibly loud. Any suggestions? I really do not want to take it out to a retail store again unless I can get a new MacBook out of it since it'll be the third time the motherboard has been replaced.
