Rear fan and front fan

Hi
I've got a ThinkStation S30 (4352 A8G) and as I've put a power hungry graphics card in it, i would like to install a front/pci fan, but the motherboard fan connector(s) seem to be non-standard? In fact only the CPU fan connector seems to be standard. The 3 pin front fan connector seems to be standard lenght and width, but the "plastic taps" sticking up seem to not correspond with the plastic taps on the laso 3 pin standard case fan connector I've got (Noctua NF-B9). It seems as if it is possible to connect is any way simply letting the plastic taps on the motherboard connector just not locking the cable connector - my questing then is - is the voltage/signals in the three pins standard?
I've also got a Noctua NF-B9 PWM which i intenden to swap the rear fan - they are both 4 pin - but again the plastic tips do not correspond exactly - but will it work - are the pins signals/voltages standard.
All the Noctua cables/connectors have clear indications of what each pin is - can this be found for the motherboards connectors?

Here are the pinouts for the fan connectors.
Front fan:
And here is the pinout for the S30 rear fan:
You might have to manipulate the wires on your fans to get everything to line up.  If the tabs are causing you problems after you're sure you have the plug direction and pinouts correct, I'd just cut them off  They are really only there for alignment/keying to help avoid misplugs.

  • Fan and more fan...

I have had this Macbook Pro for about four months. Just recently the fans have started to stay on continuously. I had seen some other posts about this topic on a huge number of forums, but none of them completely addressed the issue here.
From the moment I push the power button, both the right and left fans run at 2000 RPM (give or take seven). I have tried to reset the SMC. I've gone through the whole PRAM NVRAM reset and that doesn't help. I have the latest version of the firmware installed as well. I installed a dashboard widget to see temp and fan speeds and my fans (both right and left) run at 2000 always (like I said up there). It doesn't matter if the CPU's are cool or warm. The warmest they will get is around 42C 112F. I could let it sit all night and still have the same situation.
I could install the third party fan controller program, but that won't fix the issue, just mask it.

Hi MacPro06: The numbers you have posted are perfectly normal. 2000 RPM is the default fan speed for the newer MacBook Pros. 42 Celcius is also quite normal. Not sure why there is more noise, but the numbers are fine.

  • I want to quiet down a P4 1.6A CPU fan and Sparkle PSU

    Hi,
I want to quiet down my P4 1.6A CPU fan and PSU fan....
    A) I have a MSI 845G-MAX-L motherboard with Winbond monitoring chip. I notice that the CPU fan RPM goes up when temperature goes up. Is this normal on all boards, or is this an extra nice feature specific to MSI boards with Winbond chip???
    B) I've already put a FanMate to the CPU fan, and it runs at 1500 RPM, but I can still hear it.... so now I have a Zalman fan bracket (FB123) and am searching for a 80MM which has RPM sensoring, to give me some feedback in the BIOS and MBM5. Any suggestions on a quiet 80MM which has RPM sensoring.... (I've tried Coolermaster and Vantec.. they are both noisy to me.... I tried Panaflo but I want the RPM sensor so I can tell if the Winbond chip is doing it's job of speeding up the fan when the CPU temp goes up....
    C) I have a Sparkle 300W-BTV PSU. Does Sparkle solder on the PSU fan tail to the pcb or do they use some pin header?? I'll probably replace the PSU fan with Panaflo. Also does Sparkle use a thermistor to control fan speed or is it just one speed? I can use the Coolermaster DAF-B82 which is quiet at startup (1000 rpm) at 20 C.
    D) I am thinking about getting the OCZ P4 eliminator passive heatsink.... anyone using it or seen a review of it? Can the Alpha 8942 run in passive mode with no CPU fan? I only have the Sparkle PSU fan as the exhaust fan in my Coolermaster ATCS-200 aluminum case.
    Thanks.....

My CPU runs at 37 C at idle and the CPU fan is at 2400 RPM.  When running loaded (at 100% utilization after 1 hour) my CPU temp runs at 41 C and the CPU fan is at 2800 RPM.   During the summer when ambient temps were very high I've seen my CPU temps at 43 C and CPU fan speed at 3000 RPM.
I read a little on the Intel Precision Cooling Technology.  I believe that the Intel Precision Cooling is capable of adjusting the SYSTEM case fans (along with the CPU fan).   It seems that Intel went one step further by adding in SYSTEM fans and then adding in the ability for the user to control both the CPU fan and SYSTEM fans based on temperature.
What I'm wondering is if all or most P4 motherboards adjust  the CPU fan speed based on CPU temp (in real time), or is this just something new that MSI did in their later boards like my 845G MAX?  Anyone have other P4 MB (other than the obvious ones by Asus and the ones which have the Intel Precision Cooling) who can comment?

  • Fan and flash website?

    Hi there,
I am just wondering if your Imac G5 PPC's fan runs at full speed when you vist flash websites? Is it normal?
    CPU temperature = 67 degrees
Hard drive temperature = 58 degrees
    Fan speed
    CPU = 4446 rpm
    System = 2453
    Harddrive = 2615
    Please advice

I have an imac G5 with 1 gig of ram. When my daughter visits a flash website the cpu fan will ramp up to +5000 rpm. Apple has already replaced the logic board and the power supply. During those repairs I was told the fan noise was normal. The fans can get so loud that I can hear them over 30 feet away. Very loud.
I also have a Macbook Core Duo 2gh with 512 meg of ram. That laptop will never make a sound except for the dvd sound when watching a dvd. No fan noise, no high ramps on the fans, nothing.
I have read that placing a piece of foam insulation on the cpu fan housing will reduce the noise as it may be due to vibration of the fan and/or fan housing.

  • No Display Thru HDMI and Sys Fans Stop

    Build is as follows:
    MSI Z97M Gaming-5 Mobo
    Intel i7 4790
    MSI GTX 980 Twin Frozr
    Corsair CS550M PSU
I tried connecting the gpu via hdmi to my monitor and hdtv. CPU fan and case fans all spin, the mobo lights up, the gpu lights up, but I get no display on the tv or monitor.
I took out the gpu and unplugged it from the PSU. Connected the hdmi cable to the mobo's hdmi port. No display and the case fans stop spinning when the hdmi is plugged in, but then resume spinning when it's unplugged. I have no idea where to go from here. I followed all the instructions on the mobo manual and didn't miss anything.

Tried taking board out of the case and testing it that way without the gpu installed. Same issue occurs. No display on monitor and case fans stop spinning when hdmi is plugged in.

  • Uneven CPU useage and revving fans...according to iStat?

    Hello All,
As with others, I've had the revving fan issues on my G5 for as long as I can remember. The other day, I installed the iStat Pro widget, which tells you information on what's being used in your computer, which fans are going what speed, temperatures, RAM useage, and such. According to iStat, whenever the fans are revving and I check, it's the fan and intake fan on 'CPU A' that's revving up to 1500-3000 rpm, whereas the ones on CPU B stay in the 300-500 range...and in terms of temperatures, CPU A is always at least 10 degrees higher than CPU B in farenhite. Is this unevenness normal in an dual processor G5? Does the second one kick in only when it's needed for heavy computing? Is GPU A being overtaxed, leading to the revving fans? And again, those randomly revving fans only seem to be the ones on CPU A. The drive bay fan seems to hover constantly at around 1000 rpm.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. You could try installing Hardware Monitor
    http://www.bresink.com/osx/HardwareMonitor.html
which will give a more comprehensive picture of temps and fan speeds, etc. - and how they vary over time, and according to CPU loading. You can create probes/sensors for processor load and check that everything varies in (fairly) logical unison, at least.
Some fans and temps will be either almost unvarying or show steady progressive change, e.g. Drive Bay Fan; PCI Slot Fan (names may vary slightly in HM on your G5)
Most dual processor G5s will show some variation between processors - there are some, fairly historical, examples here
    http://macosg.com/group/viewtopic.php?t=1314&highlight=temperatures
some of which are greater than 10deg F. If, after observing the readings in HM for a while, you are still concerned, you could run the Apple Hardware Test, explained here
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/aht.html
or, if you still have AppleCare, download TechTool
    https://support.apple.com/techtooldeluxe/main?id=dl
or contact AppleCare, when you have some numbers, and see what they say.
Probably also worth checking that there is no fluff build-up in the cooling fins of the CPU heat-sinks.
No doubt you have tried changing Processor Performance to 'Highest' in System Preferences > Energy Saver > Options to reduce the Random Pointless Revving.
If you note the CPU loads in HM or use the 'Floating CPU Window' in the Window menu in Utilities > Activity Monitor, the algorithm for allocation of CPU load appears to be more sophisticated than it was in some earlier Applications that pushed one task to one specific processor.
Please post again if any of this isn't clear. Good Luck.

  • MSI KT4AV and PSU FAN connector?

MSI KT4AV has 2 fan connectors: CPU FAN and System FAN. What about PSU FAN - is there PSU fan connector on this mobo? Can I connect PSU Fan to System Fan connector?

I've read that PSU Fan is not powered from Fan Connector, but it's only uses it to measure RPM of PSU Fan. RPM of PSU fans is controlled by PSU (Chieftec 360W HPC-360-202 DF). Is amperage so important in this situation? Sorry, if it's lame question but I don't know too much about PSU's. ;-)

  • How can I tell if fan between front and rear bay is working?

    hi all
How can I tell if fan between front and rear bays is working? I put my hand behind G4 MDD to feel for air flow and it seems minimal. I hear a wind tunnel sound but I feel more heat than air flow. Please help as I don't want my Mac to overheat
    Thanks, Web dude

You can run your mac with the side "door" open - down flat to the right of the computer. You should be able to see the fan do (or not do) its thing.
I have done this (run the mac with the side open) many times. For safety, I turn the mac off before opening / closing the door.

  • MBP Freezes (have erased and installed, ran disk utility, and inc fan speed

Hi Guys, Any advice on this issue would be very much appreciated please.
Have had an original mbp for about 2 and a half years. Last few weeks it's been freezing between 1 and 5 times a day. By freezing I mean that the screen freezes and there's no cursor or keyboard fuctionality. Sound stops too. This happens using World of Warcraft, Pages, Office for Mac, and Safari, sometimes also the finder. Main culprit though is Safari and WoW. For comedy value, I'm a priest in WoW and it froze during a raid which resulted in the whole group wiping out! Great timing! lol
    So far I have:
Ran disk utility, repaired permissions and verified disk.
Did a complete erase and install.
Downloaded Fan Control and set to 3400 base speed, left fan @ 3503 RPM and Right fan @ 3508 RPM - temp reads 46.9 oC (118 oF)
I'm guessing that since my erase and install, that it is very much a hardware issue as the problem has happened again.
Since I've done the fan thing, nothing has frozen so far but I only did it about an hour ago.
If anyone could offer any other suggestions in case it does freeze again I'd be very grateful indeed :0)
Oh - one thing I don't get is that only about 4 hours after my erase and install I did the disk utility once more (Repair permissions and verify) and it came up with the below list - which is huge given it was a fresh install. Not sure if the below info will help (not really sure what it's for tbh - but there it is.
    Many thanks,
    Vizzy

According to Mactracker, your Mac could recognize 3 GB of RAM:
    http://www.mactracker.ca/
One thing to check is your RAM usage while playing WOW. I am not a gamer, so I don't know if you can play with your Dock visible, but if you can, here is an easy way to keep track of your RAM usage.
Go to Activity Monitor (in your Utilities folder in your Applications folder) and put it in the Dock. Then while in Activity Monitor, go to View (in the menu bar)>Dock Icon and select "Show Memory Usage".
You want to see a lot of green in the pie chart. If you don't, you are running out of RAM and then the computer turns to your hard drive to fulfill the functions of RAM. This process is much slower, and I could see it resulting in freezes. • 17" iMac G5 2GHz (ALS but no iSight) runs hot and LOUD fans

    Hi all,
I love my iMac. I've had it for nearly 8 months now. From day 1, I've been surprised by how loud it is under any significant CPU load. Unfortunately for me, I have waited until I'm well out of my phone support window to do anything about it. I have not yet purchased AppleCare.
As I type this, my CPU temp is 70 degrees C and fan is running at 2600 RPM, running nothing beyond the browser in which I'm typing. Should I attempt to work in iMovie and render said work to DVD (the reason I bought the machine), CPU temp will climb to ~76 and fan speed jumps to 4600-4800 RPM. At this speed, the noise is unbearable...but it is annoying even when idle.
Can any of you with this model of 17" iMac comment on your experience? Do these numbers and this experience sound normal? I know I'm not alone in this complaint, but I can't tell how widespread the problem is or whether my machine is normal or defective. I've been told by my local service center (CompUSA) that every single 17" iMac of this revision runs hot and has loud fans, and that there is nothing I can do short of complaining to Apple in the hopes of getting a replacement of a later revision. I was told by a "genius" at a different Apple store that my machine sounded about like he'd expect.
I'm getting a system board replacement tomorrow, but have been told not to expect it to make a significant difference. I figure I must do it before Apple would consider further action.
Any advice at all will be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long message...
    Thanks,
    ctcaldwell
    iMac G5 17" Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Mine is still fairly new as I picked it up off ebay a couple weeks ago brand new. So I don't know when it was actually manufactured. The part of the noise that gets under my skin is that soft but constant background whining coming from the CPU fan. It doesn't really sound like anything rubbing or a bad bearing, just the sound that an electric motor makes. But, it just seems to resonate from the lower left hand side where the air intake is.
So quite accidentally one day I held my hand under the left hand side and it completely muffled the whine sound. You could still here the hum and the sound of air but the irritating element was gone. Playing around a little more, I opted to tape a business card under that lower left hand corner, bridging the gap from front to back to still allow an airspace for the fan's suction. It knocks out about 90% of the whine.
It's been running that way for two weeks with no ill effects. Yes, the fan speeds up and slows down when needed. Normal at rest RPM is 1500 and mid to upper 50's on the temp. The highest temp I've seen under max continuous load is 65 with the fan at 4000 rpm.
I did experiment with something longer than the business card but I did then see a decrease in cooling capability. The isight models have their suction ducted out the back and I bet that gets rid of that resonance.
So all in all it still makes less fan noise than my old B&W, it's just that the B&W wasn't up on the desk so close to our heads. But, If your fans are constantly on high, there is a procedure for resetting something in power management, I just can't find it right now. Hope this helps.

  • Why does Mountain Lion triggers front fan in Mac Pro?

Hi all, this is my first visit to this community and I hope there won't be much more .
I bought a new SSD drive for my Mac Pro (early 2008). I had to install it from my Macbook Pro because Leopard in the Mac Pro wouldn't allow me to.
Neither I could perform a bootable USB clean install since the Mac Pro didn't show the device in the drive selection splash screen.
Then I put the SSD back into the Mac Pro and eureka, everything worked just fine. After about 30 seconds with the desktop in front of me, the front fan of the Mac triggered like if it was a constant reboot. However, the system worked just fine with no trouble but the annoying noise of the fan.
It's an OS related problem because this doesn't happen in Leopard. Any idea what went wrong?

Faulty installation.  Why could you not install the SSD in the Mac Pro running Leopard? Why are you running Leopard in the Mac Pro instead of upgrading it to Mountain Lion? Try doing it this way. Put the SSD into the Mac Pro.
    Erase and Install
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your SSD (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. After formatting finishes quit DU and return to the installer. Install Leopard onto the SSD.
Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.

  • MSI P6NGM-L system temperature and processor fan speed

    Hi folks,
I've got a MSI P6NGM-L board that is reaching a system temperature of 46ºC-47ºC at everyday load (not playing games or doing heavy work... just browsing, email, text editor, etc). My case has got a frontal and rear 120mm (exaustor) fan, and my processor (Core 2 Duo E7200), an Akasa AK-965BL cooler. My graphics board is a XFX Geforce 9800GT with Zalman FC-ZV9 cooler. Overall temperature is just fine, except for the system temperature, that is 32ºC when the system is turned on and is cold, and reaches about 47ºC after some time and using. I disabled the onboard NVIDIA on BIOS, but that didn't make any difference. Is that temperature OK for my configuration, or somehow high?
I thought about taking off the northbridge heatsink and applying Arctic Silver 5 in it, but I don't know if that would make any difference, and it would give me a big job, because I would have to take the board off... so I don't know if it's worth.
Another question, is P6NGM-L board PWM compatible? I tried using speedfan to control the processor's temperature but it says it's at 100%, and I know the cooler is in silent operation. If so, what software should I use to control the processor fan?
    Thanks for any help

I don't have a way to measure my room's temperature, but it's quite hot... something like 26ºC.
I thought that with all the cooling I've got inside my case the system temp would get lower, but it is still the same under normal load, even since my case had only one exaustor and stock coolers.
What about the processor's fan speed? Can I really change it by software? I plan to do some overclocking, so I would like to do tests with the processor cooler in full speed... I've googled all the way around, but couldn't find substancial information about P6NGM-L support for that.
    Thanks

  • MacPro4,1 Front fan noise-since installing new drive

Since installing a new drive in bay 4, my front fan (PCIe) is very noisy.
This happens not only on start up, shut down & sleep wake up- but for no apparent reason.  It use to sound like a purring kitten- now sounds like clacking metal. Before doing the install, we blew out all the dust with canned air. Then did it again the next day.
Tried resetting the PRAM & SMC.
It is possible when blowing out the dust we forced the fan off it axis?
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.

You transferred the thermal sensor from the old hard drive to the new hard drive and reconnected it to the logic-board???
If so, then perhaps it or one of the many other sensors or sensor cables is disconnected or damaged.
One way of checking the sensors is to run the Apple Hardware Test.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
Another is using iStat Menus or the iStatPro Widget and look at the sensor readouts.

  • My power mac G5 won't boot up but has red flashing light and intense fan noise.

I Have a Power Mac G5 that flashes a red light that I've never seen before. There is nothing on the monitor and the fan noise is incredible.
HAs anyone ever had this problem?

    Hi Michael,
It's normal for the fans to go full speed if the OS won't load to handle them.
Where is this red light, on the logic board, or front panel?
Can you count the beeps or flashes?
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

  • G5 front fan connection

    G5 dual 2.5
I've been getting continuous fan noise for some time. Took the side off today to clean inside, and saw that the front fan (underneath the CD) has 2 wires coming from it. The first, with the bigger plug on it, is attached to the board behind the fan. The second is not, but there appear to be two prongs into which the plug should fit. Could anyone tell me whether that connection should be made, and , if so, how to do it, physically - it's almost impossible to reach it as the wires are so short. Thanks.

    Hey Nick,
Found this if you're sure the sound is coming from there: http://www.welovemacs.com/0761046.html
Then there's this, but I don't see the connector. Shows the wiring though, which I see is fed from one side to the other. http://cgi.ebay.com/Apple-G5-Powermac-Front-Intake-Fan-Assembly-1898_W0QQitemZ39 0009794937QQcmdZViewItem
