Rear USB ports get no power after apple boot screen...

I have an iMac G5 iSight - 2.1GHz with 2GB RAM and a 500GB hard drive... this machine has been stock since the day I bought it... with all updates applied and is in a clean office environment with a UPS backup powering it... so I can rule out dust dirt and grime being an issue here...
Things were working fine on with this machine until a day ago when I turned on the machine and when I got to the login screen the mouse was not working (stayed up in the upper left corner) and no red led light on.
So i tried restarting multiple times and used all three ports on the back of the unit with no luck each time... I them disconnceted all external drives and printers from the unit - also no luck.
Next I tried resetting the PMU and the PRAM with no luck. I did this by powering down the iMac and removing all cords (including power cord) - then held down the power button for 10 seconds... powered back up and held the ALTApple+PR until the machine reset three times.
I find it odd the keyboard works right before the boot screen comes on... but as soon as the boot screen comes up... I can see the power to the mouse cut off...
I know the keyboard and mouse work fine as they work on my Mac Mini with no issues... what the heck is causing this. I canot get into my mac... with the exception of screen sharing from my other mac.. but I need to get the USB power failure problem fixed.
Any other thoughts???
Thanks for any suggestions...

What's odd also is that if I boot into Open Firmware (ALTAPPLE+OF) I am able to see the mouse powered up and the keyboard works fine - I even followed these steps to no avail:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1812
Apple if you are listening - please check what the 10.5.6 update is doing.. al of this happened after I updated.... nerve racking considering I work from home... it's killing me...

  • Which iMac usb port is high power?

Which iMac USB port is high power?

I'm not sure this is the case, at least on the newer iMacs. Some ports will adequately power some devices (most notable the USB Suerdrive) while others won't. Or, this has been the case recently, anyway; USB with Apple devices seems hopelessly arcane anyway, which makes no sense at all!)

  • Will the PB G4 USB-ports provide sufficient power for external HDD ?

I am in the market for a 2,5in external HDD, preferably powered through the USB-ports of my PB G4. However, I have read that in many cases, Apple's laptops provide insufficient power for such devices. Is this a fact?
The drive I'm currently looking at: Western Digital Passport 120GB USB2.0 (WD Passport WDXML1200UE)

Dear Thosen, yep this can be a problem with the 12' models, I think that there are adaptors, that use both USB ports, one of power and one for data transfer. The other option is to try a firewire drive - this has the added advantage of being bootable.

  • Presario CQ5320F mouse locks up on rear USB ports

    I have a Presario CQ5320F desktop running Windows 7 64-bit.
The original mouse started double clicking when I just clicked once so I replaced it.
The new mouse works fine in the front USB ports but on the rear USB ports it works for a few seconds/minutes and then locks up.  I can plug it back in the front port to get it working again.
I've tried updating the driver but I already have the latest.
Anything else to try?  I don't like the mouse cable sticking out of the front of the machine.

Actually a USB mouse with a USB dongle is much nicer. I have a Microsoft Mobile mouse 6000 that works well for me on my laptops.
Have you installed the Microsft Host controller update for your notebook yet?

  • Rear USB ports do not work on 3000 J 7387 A11 desktop

    Hi all.
This is my brother's machine and it orginally came with Vista, But he was having too many problems with vista on it, so he purchased XP and had me load it for him.  I was able to find all of the XP drivers on the Lenovo site, except for the drivers for the rear USB ports.  So I tried to force load a driver and now it does not indicate 'no drivers installed in the device manager as it used to, but the ports don't work.  The device ID for the rear USB ports is:
    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_026D&SUBSYS_101717AA&REV_A3\3&13C0B0C5&0&58
Is there anyone else out there who has tried to load XP on one of these machines or has run into a similar issue?  Any help is appreciated.

did u try installing the drivers using windows update??a similar problem i faced was solved .but mine is a 3000h series system
    Cheers and regards,

  • After restoring imac from time capsule stuck at apple booting screen

    Hello,
I had an IMAC with hard drive that crashed. I installed a new internal HD.
Restored from time capsule. After 10 hours of restoring, it restarted.
Now it has been stuck at the Apple boot screen with the spinning wheel now for 3 hours.
Does it take that long? Anything wrong maybe.
    Thanks for all your help.

    Hello Brenden,
Thanks for the link. I have already tried everything in that kink but still getting the same issue.
One clarification if you can help me.
When I replaced my HD, I booted up using Mountain Lion CD.
I went to Disk Utility I paritioned the new drive.
I then went to System Restore and tried to restore from my time capsule a backup from Yosemite, Maverick and Snow Leopard
When imac restarted  i was getting messages that it cannot boot up..Same message over and over.
Therefore, I once again went in and booted up using Mountain Lion CD,
Went to Disk Utility and erased all contents of the whole drive. Clean.
This time I went ahead and ran the Mountain Lion Installer.
Imac restarted and booted fine to Mountain lion.
Did all updates and so forth.
Now went to Utilities folder and selected Migration Assistant and chose to restore once more.
Restored finished, and this time I am getting the issue I originally reported.
My question is, since I am running Mountain Lion, if the backup was made using Yosemite, just before my IMAC crashed,
is this the problem why it is stuck at Boot. Because i need to be running Snow Leopard at leat to upgrade to Yosemite.
However, how come none of my backup s can be restored , just by going straight to restore backup instead of installing some mac os x first.
    Thanks,

my iPod will not turn on when I charge it or restart it it just gets stuck on the apple icon screen what do I do to fix it

    Hello crimsonflare,
    Try this first:
Apple - Support - iPod Troubleshooting Assistant
If that does not work, use this:
    Putting iPod into Disk Mode
and try to restore you ipod.
    Hope this helps.

  • G5 dual 2.7GHz refuses to get past the grey apple logo screen no matter what I do!

Hoping that someone might be able to help, as I think I have tried pretty much everything and I’m running out of ideas now!
It’s a G5 dual 2.7GHz that refuses to get past the grey apple logo screen no matter what I do!
everything passes the extended apple hardware test (2.5)
3GB of RAM (2x1GB brand new from crucial)
won’t start from a original OS 10.58 disk
passes disk utility when connected to another mac via FW target mode
    nothing other than keyboard/monitor attached
    all of this done; http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
tried alternative HDD’s without any joy
    won’t safe boot
stays at the grey apple logo screen and the fans then start revving up excessively
Any other suggestions or advice very gratefully received!

Seems strange that it's trying to invoke "AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement" on a G5, but maybe it's all inclusive???
Though it exists on my Universal 10.5.8 Install, it does NOT appear to be a loaded extension....
    /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext
BD, is that showing up in your PM's extensions folder?  I wouldn't expect to see it loaded in a PM, but I wonder why the installer loads it unless the 10.5 installer loads a system that could boot an Intel, too, when it installs on a PM.  (I read somewhere this weekend that an Intel will actually boot from an APM formatted disc as well as a GUID formatted disc)  Curious.
I recall seeing yesterday or Saturday on one of the discussion threads someone having that extension show up in a verbose boot on a PM that was having problems booting into Leo.  I think I advised trashing the kernel caches and touching Extensions in that one, but it is puzzling that it shows up here as well.

  • My New iPod gets stuck on the Apple logo screen.

I got a new ipod but there is one problem with it. For hours at a time it gets stuck on the apple logo screen. In this state it does not connect to my computer. I cannot get it to play music because everytime I manage to get it started up the apple logo screen pops up and shuts it down again.
Also, on the occasions where my computer DOES recognize my iPod, my iPod says it has about 1 GB of "other files" and about 1 gb of "audio files". I understand the audio but I don't remember putting anything onto my iPod that wasn't audio. What are the "other files" and how do I remove them?

Other can be Album Artwork, Notes, Contacts, Firmware etc. or files that are on there if you are using the iPod as a removable storage device. If you feel that Other is being incorrectly reported then try restoring your iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists choose no and it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

  • No Apple boot screen on new iMac - Just black with white writing on boot

    Hi All,
I have just purchased a new 3.06Ghz iMac and whenever I turn it on, or shut down, I do not get the Apple boot screen, I just get a black screen with a long list of white writing on it. This appears for about 5 seconds and then the usual desktop loads.
Is there a way that I can get the usual apple boot screen to return? I have not done anything to the machine as it is brand new out of the box and it has been doing this since first boot.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Luca

It was just a simple case of removing the verbose boot settings which I found a script for after searching on Google.

  • My 3gs is frozen on the Apple boot screen with a spinning wheel despite resets and restores as advised everywhere I look? Any other tips?

I'm sure this is probably covered in here somewhere but I can't find it, after an hour of searching I have already done everything I see suggested!
I'm stuck on the Apple booting screen on my 3gs with the spinning wheel, I've tried resetting and restored to earlier versions and to blank but everything ends the same.
    Please help me!

Well if you are mechanically inclined you can try removing the battery and then reinserting it.  There are a couple of good videos on youtube--milliamp has one---.  You will need a .00 phillips screwdriver and a tool to remove the cables.  I just replaced my batter and I can say that the difficulty level is about a 5 out of 10.

  • Apple tv 2 is stuck on apple boot screen

My apple tv 2 is stuck on apple boot screen.  What do I need to do?

Try pulling ALL the cables for a moment and trying again, if the problem remains try restoring it by connecting it to iTunes with a micro USB cable.
