Is it possible to rearrange categories in the Finder's sidebar? I would prefer that 'Places' is above 'Shared.'

How can I see my iPhone on the Shared devices list on sidebar of Finder ?

I have a Home Network Wireless-N based on a Linksys Broadband Router WRT300N. I have my MacBook Pro and my iPhone, my wife her MacBook, my son a Windows portable and still a Desktop Windows PC. The desktop Windows PC is connected via Ethernet cable direct to the Router, the other four devices connect wireless.
The problem is that I can only see the desktop Windows PC in my Finder's Sidebar on my MacBook Pro. Since all the other devices are connected in the wireless network with full access to internet, I suppose I should see them in the sharing devices list on the sidebar. Tried already to connect to server under Menu Go To without any luck. Someone knows why ? Thanks for some help.

Weird name under the "Shared" of the Finder's sidebar

I have a macbook pro which is just upgraded to Lion.
It was going fine but few hours ago, a weird name that I don't know showed up under the 'Shared" of my Finder's sidebar. When I cliked it, it said "Connection failed" and disappeared. Now there is no "Shared" in the sidebar at all.
So first of all, what is this "Shared"?
And if there is another computer under "Shared", does it mean that computer can see what I'm doing or something?
Also, since it said it failed to connect, that computer wasn't connected to mine, right?
Am I being hacked????????????

Yes, that's a possibility. If your wireless network does not have a password, that's the most obvious explanation. I live in a suburban area, houses close but not too close, and I can see up to four of my neighbors' networks, depending on the day and what part of the house I'm in. The ones that are open, I could join if I chose to. In an apartment building, you're going to have many more people close to you, while if you live out on a farm somewhere, you probably have nobody living in range. In any situation where you have people living (or commonly travelling) nearby, you should lock down your network with a password.
And no, that device can't hack your computer unless you have a service open in System Preferences -> Sharing. You won't by default. Of course, an untrusted person on your network could potentially view all your network traffic, which could be a problem. All the more reason to lock down the network.

Ethernet connection and 'shared' option in finder window!!!

I am relatively new to mac and everyday I see something that I don't understand, like the other day I connected to internet using ethernet cable and 'shared' option appeared in finder window with all kinds of people and devices listed. It never happened when I connected through wireless. What does it mean? Are other people able to see my computer and the content on it? Any explanation would be appreciated.

It's either a PC or some other Hewlett Packard device connected to your network or on another network (probably wirelessly) you're connected to. It's in the Shared section of the Sidebar because it's either broadcasting itself using Bonjour or more likely NetBios. You can choose to not see this option by disabling it in the Finder Preferences.
It's also possible it's your router/gateway/wireless access point.
If you've not enabled personal file sharing and you're not in the habit of handing your account password out to all and sundry, there's nothing to worry about.

Until recently, it was possible to drag an item from "Places" on the Finder window sidebar onto the desktop to delete it. That function no longer works, so how do I delete places from the sidebar?

Use the Report a Problem link in the iTunes email receipt you received. Also in-app purchases can be made without the password if you bought the app within the last 15min. You should enable the in-app restriction in Settings.

Well, I am halfway there. Following your steps on the Snow Leopard MBP, the newer printer (a Canon MX860 inkjet) appeared automatically under the "default" icon on the ADD printer window. I used the IP icon with the HP Jetdirect-Socket protocol to find and add the older printer, (an HP 4000N). That required running a configuration page from the printer to locate its IP address. I printed to both printers through this laptop with success!
I then followed exactly the same procedure with the Mountain Lion MBP. For both installation attempts, I got an error message window: Unable to verify the printer on your network. "192.168.111" may not exist or is unavailable at this time. Would you still like to create the printer? If I click Continue, it creates the icon and name in the printer list. However when I attempt to print from an app. the next message says, 'Printer is unavailable.'
Why one laptop finds and uses both printers, and the newer laptop does not, just floors me!

Beads63, have you rebooted the router, this is the most common fix. If you have and it has not worked have you any new electric items that could interfere or changed your set up at all?

Personal File Sharing & Network in the Sidebar

I have had the same symptoms as other posts; but the real answer was not given, YET.
If you use the Network icon in the Sidebar, and you move between networks, Where or How do you Refresh the Finder? Rebooting or Shutdown is not the answer. Windows Networking on PCs allows for Refreshing, why not OS X?
My Senario: iMac G5 1.9 & iBook G4 1.33, both 10.4.10, no broadband, I share via Ad-Hoc. Both connect and IP given 169.x.x.x.
iBook will see iMac via Finder>Network Sidebar after about 5 seconds. iMac will not see iBook via Finder>Network Sidebar. Both have Network and Sharing set the same.
Using CMD+k, entering IP will bring up Authenticate window, which is fine, but DHCP is on, and the IP changes each time. Want Finder>Network to find the computer for me.
Using ShiftCMDK, on iBook, sometimes opens the Network Finder window, most times it never opens. (when at home)
iBook goes to hot-spots and when I come home, I want to off-load files to the iMac. The Network Sidebar remembers the last Network you were connected to with a list of all the computers you could connect to; I sleep the iBook.
Is there a terminal command to Refresh the Network without rebooting?
Big tip: I found an old Apple Article which states;
"The Local Hostname for your computer is an alternative to the network address. It is followed by ".local". Users on the same network subnet as your computer can use the Local Hostname name to access certain resources on your computer, such as your personal website. If you work in a large network environment, users on a different IP subnet cannot use the Local Hostname name of your computer."
So, if you use CMD+k while on your LAN and use "nnn.local" for the IP, you get the Authenticate window. This works fine, both machines can do this all day; But, still does not answer nor solve the question...

Couple of things that Might work...
sudo ipconfig set en0 BOOTP;sudo ipconfig set en0 DHCP
sudo ifocnfig en1 down
sudo ifconfig en1 up
(use en0 for Ethernet, en1 for Airport, etc.)
But making a New Location for each place would probably work best/easiest. You can tailor each location to it's needs.

Making and sharing user accounts

Okay-I have spent five hours trying to find a solution in Manuals, Support and similar questions but didn't find anything similar. Maybe I was searching in the wrong places but now I need direct help.
This is my question :
I need to duplicate my admin account to a new user account( admin) that will let me access the entire volume and all the data within.
I have tried -
1. I have turned on File sharing from System Preferences, shared the new user account (Also everyone), added files/folders to share the entire original user folder...gave all users Read and Write permission...just about everything...
2. I have run Disk Utility and repaired permissions ( the report said some permissions can't be repaired)
3. I have done everything the manuals here have asked me to do...
4. Went to each folder->Get Info->checked Shared Folder. Even after that folders in the new account it says- I have no access( remember I am an admin the new account too)
Could anyone help me please?

Hello James, Sorry about the late reply, I was otherwise occupied. Here is what I did >
1. Make another user account, whom you want to give privileges.
2. Open Finder (after logging in to your own username) and in the left-hand panel, below the DEVICES section, select your hard-disk. Choose your username under "users". Right-click or use the menu bar to choose the option "Get Info".
3. In the "Get Info" box, scroll down and check the box beside "Shared Folder" but this is not enough!
4. Scroll further down to the area "Sharing and Permissions" and click on the "lock" image on the right corner below the list and supply your admin password to unlock it.
5. Now use the " + " symbol on the left corner below the list to add the users you want. Whether you want to give Read/Write/Both privileges can be chosen by the up-down arrow beside each user's name in the list.
6. DO NOT forget to click on the "wheel" image in the center below the list to check "Apply to enclosed items" which will include all the sub-folders, etc . Otherwise the other user gets access that is limited to the root shared folder only!
7. Now log in to the other user's account and verify in Finder if you can access your (admin user) files from this user account. I think this should work.
8. If you do not want to share your entire user account, you can perform the above steps to specific folders or even just files.
9. Its slightly more complicated if you want to share music or photos as you will have to "Add to Library" all the respective music/photo folders that can now be accessed from the new user's account too.
