Rearranging Icons

Hello all,
When I'm browsing the internet, I tend to drag PDF files to the desktop to read later, or pictures in iPhoto I want on the desktop; and Lion automatically rearranges them (snaps them to a grid) - the snap to grid feature is not on. I usually let icons pile up into the corner of my screen, then rearrange the deskop. If I drag a photo orfile to the desktop, it automatically goes and sorts itself amongst the other icons, when I want it to stay in the corner of the screen until I move it
I think that's the best I can explain it
Any suggestions?
Thanks for your help

display the icons on the home page
touch one of the icons for a few seconds they will all start to wobble like jello
now you can move them around also you can move them to "another page"
I think you can have upto 8 pages.
You will see small dots at the bottom of the screen that let you know how many pages you actually have created.
When you are satisfied with the layout press the lower middle button on the case and all the icons lock in place

  • Can't rearrange icons or get to the multitasking screen

I just had my iPad mini reset and got iOS 8.3.  Now I am unable to rearrange icons - I can get the icons to wiggle but if I try to move them, they just snap back to where they were and I can't create any folders.  My home button is working, a single click gets me out of the app I'm in, 3 clicks bounces me to the home screen, but 2 clicks won't open the multitasking screen - I've tried adjusting the click speed with no success.  I've also tried the 4-5 finger sweep from bottom to top and that also won't open the multitasking screen although the other gestures work.  As an added note, I have screen orientation unlocked and while the screen will rotate within an app, it won't rotate on the home screen.

Is the device yours and unfettered, or is it a corporate or school-owned device subject to central management? Such devices can have a management profile imposed upon them by the central administrator, which can have such kinds of restrictions. And which do not show up in the Settings.

  • Slow "rearrange icon" feature on 4.2.1?

    Hello all
I've already posted my issue inside one of the threads, but no one seems reacted on it. So I want to post it as a new thread.
I've upgraded my iPhone 3GS from 4.1 to 4.2.1. No needs to say that we all missed new text tones But I've discovered strange issue with rearrange icons feature. It turns on and turns off very very slow of compare it with 4.1 firmware. I've checked it with 3gs of my friend.
Can anyone please check this behavior? I hope this is not a problem of firmware itself, but rather my local problem. Resetting phone, restoring again did nothing to solve the problem.
Thank you, and may the ios be with you all.

I'm having the same problem too...I've upgraded to iOS 4.2.1 and now when i wiggle my icons to arrange it, it lags for a few seconds and when i hit Home after that, it lags for a few seconds too. Also, I feel like the wifi connection and internet browsing become slower too. Is there any solutions? Should I/Can I downgrade? This is starting to annoy me...Help Me!:(

  • How do I rearrange icons

How do I rearrange icons on iPad ?

Tap and hold on any icon until they all begin to jiggle. Then tap and hold on an icon until it grows slightly and drag it to the new location you want it to be. Note that dragging and icon onto the top of another icon will create a folder that contains both apps. When you are finished click the Home button.

  • How do I rearrange icons in the dock?

Beginning with OS X 10.1, I've always been able rearrange icons in the dock by simply dragging them to a new position. Existing icons move out of the way to make way. But not any more, not with Mountain Lion. With a lot of fiddling I can get the icon to lift out, but then no existing icons slide over to make room. Everything appears to be locked down solid.
This can't be how Apple now wants the OS to behave! Some have suggested I trash the system preferences in order to restore flexibility. Something I'm very reluctant to do.
I strongly suspect Apple has "hardened" the dock to protect the careless user. Holding down Option, Command and/or Control has no effect.
Surely there must be a new technique for re-arranging icons, but what is it?
    With kind regards,

Yes, that does work. However the OS puts up great resistence. Formerly the OS accommodated smoothly, like silk. Now it's as if the OS is testing my intention all the way. Finally, reluctantly lets go.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Cannot use iTunes to download apps or rearrange icons

Since I updated iOS 8 on my iPhone 6 this morning, I cannot rearrange the icons on my screens, either right on the phone or in iTunes when connected with USB cord.  I also cannot install apps that I previously downloaded.  Anyone else having these problems?  The iTunes store is supposedly functional again.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi handyfromdurham,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I understand that you were having issues installing apps and rearranging apps. You also make mention of the interruption to Apple Services. Was this issue resolved after the affected Apple Services came back up or are you still experiencing this issue? The link to check the status of Apple Services is included below for future use. • Can't rearrange icons in dock

    Hi
Ever since I updated to Leopard, I haven't been able to rearrange the icons in the dock. I can still add apps anywhere in the dock, but then once it's in there, I can't move it anywhere else. None of this was happening on Tiger, so I know it's because of updating to Leopard.
Has anyone else had similar problems, and does anyone know how I would go about fixing it?
    Thanks

Have you tried deleting the dock's preferences? If not, you might try that, or try doing a permissions repair in the disk utility. If the dock cannot write to its preference file then it will not store where you move things.

  • How to rearrange icons

    Hello all!
I am playing around w my new iPad and can't seem to rearrange the icons-more specifically move an icon from page one to page two.
They just refuse to be dragged over? Any thoughts?
    Thanks!

    Hi Kappy.
    Maybe the only way?
Although the user manual (IOS 5, even) clearly states that you can do it from the device itself...
(On iPod touch, this works as advertised.)

  • My dock keeps rearranging icons

Hi guys. I just did a clean install of snow leopard (although this problem has been happening with every single MacBook i've had) and whenever i try to move icons around on the dock it either rearranges it, or rearranges it and deletes icons off my dock. it happens a few second after i move things and it's always different. this problem is seriously annoying, i've tried deleting com.apple.dock or whatever and i also don't use mobileme or isync so that's not the problem either. anybody have a solution?

Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.finder.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac.

  • Apple configurator - rearranging icons on supervised devices

I have set up 3 test ipads to try and understand the power of Apple configurator before rolling out around 20 further ipads with an identical layout..
I now have all 3 ipads loading with one profile and a bunch of free apps. The problem is all the app icons are across 3 different pages on the ipad and i want to tidy them up so they appear on just the first 2 pages of the ipad. I also want to arrange the icons so the most popular ones are on the first page.
When i try to rearrange the icons on one ipad then re-connect it, the ipad reverts back to the old display of icons spread across 3 pages. I guess this because it reverts to the previous saved profile.
I can't seem to find a way of turning off the supervision temporarily to allow me to arrange all the icons in the way i want, change the background imagae or make any small setting changes on the ipad to be able to roll those changes out to all the other devices.
I feel like i am missing something ?

    Hey Rookeydooks,
Sounds like you have Apple Configurator set to automatically refresh when you connect iPads. To turn this off (in Apple Configurator 1.2.1), in the menu bar go to Apple Configurator -> Preferences. On the General tab, uncheck "Automatically refresh". This way, the iPad won't automatically revert back to the saved supervised backup.
Once you make your changes, you should then create a new Supervised Backup. After that, you can go back to Apple Configurator -> Preferences, and check "Automatically refresh".
    Hope this answers your question!

  • Cant add or even rearrange icons in my dock!!

    Hello
I dont know if there is a limit to how many icons you can add to a dock in mountain lion 10.8.2, but mine wont add or move icons, when i try to grab an app to the dock, the app goes back to its folder..... i dont know whats wrong here

If this were happening to me I would try:
    (1) Execute this command in the Terminal application:
defaults write com.apple.Dock contents-immutable -bool false
    then execute:
    killall dock
    Did that help?
If not (or if Terminal stuff is too extreme for your tastes) I would try
    (2) Delete the dock preferences (com.apple.dock.plist) in your HOME Library Preferences Folder and in the ByHost subfolder.

  • After rearranging icons on Springboard, some icons are blank

I moved several apps to different locations or pages. When I turned on the phone this morning, most of the app icons are blank. I resynced with iTunes but now both iTunes and the iPhone are showing blank icons. How do I get the icons back?

I unchecked all additional apps on the iPhone from the iTunes app tab and then resynced to remove the apps from the device. I then checked the apps again and resynced. The icons were no longer blank on the iPhone Springboard but were no longer arranged on the pages I had moved them to. I'll live with this solution until someone else posts a reply.

  • Unable to rearrange/organise/organize homescreen icons using iTunes 11

For some reason I am unable to rearrange icons (on my iPhone 4S) using iTunes 11.0.2. When I have my phone plugged-in and connected to iTunes and I rearrange icons on the phone itself, the change is reflected on my computer immediately; the same is not true of rearranging on the computer - even after a full 'Sync'.
Has anyone come across this before and found a fix?
    Cheers

Haha! yes I did. I actually solved it after rebooting my phone and mac - no idea what might have caused the glitch.

  • Lion OS Folder Icons and Settings Change

My new 8 core Mac Pro with Lion arrived August 29 to replace an older Mac Pro with Snow Leopard. FYI - Just before the new Mac Pro arrived, I checked and repaired any permissions issues via the Disk Utility. Once the new Mac arrived, it took four days to finally get things moved over from the main hard drive because of various problems. I held up the transfer from the other 3 drives and am glad that I did. After a bad optical drive was replaced, constant Finder problems have been occurring which appear to revolve around permission conflicts. In essence, the Mac OS on my Mac Pro appears to be schizophrenic and apparently, it is in need of a frontal lobotomy. In reviewing posts in this forum, I was surprised to learn that users have been reporting similiar issues ever since Lion was released. I was given the impression that my complaint about it was the first for the techs who have attempted to resolve the problem.
I do a large amount of photography using the HDR technique so it is important to arrange image icons in specific groupings and order within folders. We have all gotten used to having icons in the same place or configuration in folders each time we open them. This not only gives us a feeling of consistency but is a critical time save when dealing with images and other graphic files. Unfortunately, because of some overlooked programming issue, the Mac OS Lion is confused as to what permissions it should pay attention do. While working, icon arrangements are constantly changing causing many hours of additional work without let-up. There is also an issue that happens I would call Blinking for no better of a word to use. In certain folders, icons will dissappear then quickly show again. This can happen about every 10 - 14 seconds sometimes.
I have also noticed related problems with new software upgrades. They work fine at first, then all of a sudden, they do not. Simple slideshows exported to video using Lightroom now appear completely black. In Dreamweaver CS 5.5, I can connect to the ftp server but am not allowed to upload. I am stuck in limbo, not being able to migrate all my work over from the older computer because all folder icon layouts will be destroyed if I start working in them. It has also created licensing issues because now softwares are on two Mac Pros and a laptop. The latest tech support request is to either erase my new startup disk and installing softwares one at a time, or consider installing the more stable Snow Leopard. Has anyone figured out an answer? I have never had such a bad experience with an Apple product in over 20 years. I would highly recommend to professional graphic artists, photographers, or other visual professionals that rely on the consistency of icon views in folders to stay away from Mac OS Lion until the problems have been resolved. Hopefully Apple intends to correct this. It has already taken several months.

    What finally worked for me!
My internal Mac hard drive is my “filing cabinet” with all folders installed by Lion (Applications, Users, System, and Library) plus my personal folders and data in each visible when I click on and open the harddrive. My internal Mac hard drive icon is on my desktop. After a restart the file and folder icons inside most of the first level of my personal folders would shrink and rearrange themselves.
After an hour on the phone with Apple Tech Support andt rying a variety of approaches, we finally solved the problem of the shrinking and rearranged icons. (Thank you Manny!!!) This is what finally worked for me and my new MacbookPro 15-inch delivered with Lion already installed.
    BTW I use a mouse….
Right clicked on the internal hard drive icon on my desktop. (Note: “Out of the box “ when you startup with Lion the first time the Mac Hard Drive probably will not be visible on the desktop and you have to reveal it!)
In the dialogue box that opened I selected and clicked on “Get Info.”
A long window opened. We looked at Sharing & Permissions at the very bottom of the window. In the “You have custom access” window my log in name was not there. This was the culprit!!! But the box was grayed out.
At the lower right hand corner of the long window I clicked on the padlock to open it.
A dialogue box opened with my user name and asked for my Password. I entered my Password and clicked “OK.”
The grayed out area of the Sharing & Permissions box immediately darkened.
I clicked on the plus sign at the bottom left hand corner of the long window.
A window opened at the top of the long box. I highlighted my name on the right hand side and then clicked on the “Select” button.  My name then appeared in the Sharing & Permissions box at the bottom of the long window.
To the right of my name un "Privelege" I made sure that “Read & Write” was turned on (use the little arrows.)
Back to the lower left hand corner and clicked on the gear and when the box opened I clicked on “Apply to enclosed items.”
Back at the lower right hand corner of long window, clicked on the open padlock to close it and lock the settings.
In each folder using “Show View Options”dialogue window I resized all the shrunken icons, set the Arrange to by “Name,” anything else I wanted, clicked on “Use as defaults” closed the window and moved on. When I rebooted everything had stabilized!

  • How to restore the Camera App./Icon that comes with the iPhone ?

I accidentally deleted my Camera app icon when I was rearranging icons on my iPhone 4S. Since it's a "standard feature" and not an "App" from the App store I cannot find out how to "resinstall" what came with your phone as standard feature. Yet, I can perform a search for Camera and have it come up and use it but I cannot locate it in a folder or even when I'm plugged in to the iTunes on my iMac to see all the apps. on the screen. What gives? Please don't tell me to restore my phone b/c for this one little app., it just seems like there should be an easier way to add it back to my home screen. Please and thanks!

It can't be deleted. It either got moved to another page or into a folder.
As for the "support icon", press and hold the icon till all icons begin to wiggle. You can then press the X on the icon to delete it. Press the home button when you are finished.
