Rearranging Stack Icons?

I'm wondering if there's a way to change the order in which the icons of a stack appear when it is opened in "Grid" view. So far, it seems as though they can only be arranged by name, kind, or date added/modified/created. I want to order them in a way imposed by me.
The stack I'm referring to is an Applications stack. In the folder /Users/myusername/Applications, I've put aliases to applications that I want to have close at hand, but that I don't want cluttering up my dock itelf (since I don't use them quite often enough to justify that). When the stack opens as a grid, I want the applications to be displayed in a certain order, from most often used to least.
My workaround:
For the time being, I've renamed the aliases in the folder in such a way that sorting them by "name" will give me the order I want. E.g.: Instead of TextEdit, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, I have named the aliases:
1. TextEdit
2. Microsoft Word
3. Microsoft Excel
...et cetera

There is no setting. You can take everything out of the folder, set the stack to "Date Added", and put everything back in the folder in the order you want it to be in.

  • Problem rearranging stacks...

I have an album of images that are rated differently and some of which are combined in stacks. I want to rearrange the single images and stacked images without having to turn the 'filter' off. The problem I am having is that the images I want to rearrange have at least 2 stars applied to them - when I filter my library to only display images that have a rating of 2 stars or better and rearrange my stacks it only moves the images within any given stack that have a rating of 2 stars or better and leaves unrated or 1 star images in their original location, thus separating the stack. I want to be able to move the entire stack of images regardless of the rating of each image without having to turn the image filter off. Is this possible?
    Thanks!

The folders (Stacks) in the Dock are just aliases to actual folders somewhere on your computers.
When you move something from a Folder in the Finder to a folder (stack) in the Dock, the file gets moved to the folder that is represented by the Stacked folder.
If you right-click (or ctrl-click) on the stack icon in the dock, you can choose "Show in Finder," and it will open the actual folder that is being aliased by the stack.
So, if you've moved a file to a folder in the Dock, and then deleted it from the folder that is represented by the Stack on the Dock, you will have deleted the actual file.
What is shown on the face of the Dock are aliases (shortcuts) to actual items. If you remove one of the aliases, the original is not deleted. If you remove what is in the aliases on the Dock, you will delete the original, as that is what is there.

I have rearranged all icons on the second and third pages to have a just a photo on my home, but if i switch off the iphone when i restarted it all the icons come back in the old position on the home and second page. I have ios5.

you can suggest it here - http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
And it is only a problem if you want a blank first screen.  Personally, it would drive me nuts always having to swipe over one page to get to my apps - the only time I unlock my iPhone is to use it or run an app, so no, I have no need nor desire to have a first screen with no icons at all.
But, if they'd put it in as an option so people like yourself can also have what they want, that's fine too    So send them your feedback (they actually do listen - iOS 5 includes a number of things people have been asking for on these forums, like being able to delete individual entries from the call history, inproved alerts/notifications, being able to opt out of all the location based data they collect,...).

  • Custom "stacks" icons in date added view/sort

i've found various workarounds for custom stacks icons that sort by name, date creation, date modified. the only one that i couldn't resolve was the "date added" which is what is most useful for the downloads folder.
i had automator "record" my actions of opening the downloads folder, deleting a "downloads folder icon" that i had placed in there earlier, and then undoing the deletion. this made the "downloads folder icon" the most newly added. and then i saved it as a folder action attached to my downloads folder.
sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't and it hijacks the mouse control for the second or two that it's running.
but would any genius that knows applescript better than i know of a way to do this as an applescript. it probably wouldn't be as "sloppy" as a recorded automator workflow and wouldn't hijack the mouse control.
    thanks in advance.

  • Mountain lion finder rearranges my icon files

    I've discovered a bug:
Mountain Lion's Finder rearranges my icon files by alphabet when I paste more than one document into a directory.  It happened twice.  Sometimes I prefer visual arrangement in directories.
    SECOND PROBLEM:
I also don't like the permanent default Finder window size - I want OS X to remember my last Finder window size like it used to.  I have a big Apple monitor, I like using it.
Is there any way to fix these issues?
    Thanks!

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • I got a iphone yesterday and today I was rearranging the icons and now I can't find my camera or safari icon

I got a iphone yesterday and today I was rearranging the icons and now I can't find my camera or safari icon any ideas what happen?

They can't be deleted so one of 3 things happened:
    1) You moved them into folders or to different pages. Reset the home screen layout if you can't find them.  Settings>General>Reset>Reset Home Screen Layout.
    2) You set up restrictions on them. Settings>General>restrictions.
    3) You added an Exchange account for which the administrator has specifically prohibited the use of Internet browsers and cameras on phones.
The only thing you can do in case 3 is remove the Exchange account and appeal to your IT department to change the policy.

  • Multi-chat and stacked icon questions

Trying to multichat with two family members for the first time. One of the icons is showing only as the single camera, rather than the stacked icon, since her upgrade to 10.4.3 it seems (not positive about this.) She repaired permissions-- no luck. She has definitely had the triple icon before, but then we had no third party to chat with. Now we do...
What else to try, as it seems her iBook G4 should have the power, and our single person video chats are fantastic?
Does iChat monitor bandwidth and determine whick icon you get?
What else can we try to get the triple icon back?
    Thanks in advance-- Scott

    Courtesy of Ralph Johns:
Copy and Paste the bold line of text below into Terminal (when ichat is shut down) and then hit enter.
    /Applications/iChat.app/Contents/MacOS/iChat -errorLogLevel 7
This will start up iChat and produce a log in the Terminal window
At the top of the log you should see where iChat has calculated what it thinks its your incoming and outgoing bandwidth and also how many video and audio participants it believes you can handle.
Afaik this is based on your system specs and available bandwidth. My iBook G4 1Ghz has the multiple video icon and claims it can support up to 3 video chat users. This is on a 2mbit connection however.

  • Deleted stack icon on desk top

I am going to sound really stupid. My stack icon on the desk top disappeared with a little smoke cloud, how do i get it back?

Go to Finder and then drag the icon back down to the dock. You cannot delete items from within the Stacks view. You have to go to Finder and then find the folder you want to delete the file from and delete it from there.

  • Nice improvement to stacks icons

    Hello everyone-
I tried some Leopard GUI tweaks suggested in ComputerWorld
    http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleI d=9084398&pageNumber=2
and I found the application "Stacks In Da Place"
    http://www.eagle-of-liberty.com/stacksindaplace/
combined with Yasushi Chida's drawer-style icons
    http://www.geocities.jp/chy065/
to be a really nice improvement over what Apple does by default for stack icons in Leopard. I usually don't do GUI tweaks, but I have never liked the implementation of Stacks. This is, IMO, much nicer and I thought some of the rest of you might like to give it a try.
In the 10.5.2 update Apple fixed a lot of Leopard's GUI problems, but the Stacks icons is one area that they have not yet addressed.
FWIW, I like the Tiger-style folder icons better too. The embossed blue ones are too difficult to differentiate, I think the older ones were much better.
Oh well, it's a matter of taste I suppose. Anyway, thought someone might enjoy these Stacks changes.

Thanks for posting Michael, I personally think Apple made some bad decisions with Leopards GUI, stacks being one of them, the "3D" dock being another.

  • How can i rearrange dock icons in Yosemite

I can no longer rearrange dock icons by clicking and dragging.  How can you rearrange them in Yosemite?

Try doing a Dock restart using the following Terminal command:
    killall Dock
Log out/in and test. If that doesn’t work, you need to look in your user Library/Applications Support/Dock for the .db. Use the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Applications Support/Dock.  Move the .db to your desktop.
    Then try a dock reset.
    Applications/Utilities/Terminal enter the command
    killall Dock
Log out/in test. If it works okay, delete the .db from the desktop.
If the Dock is the same, return the .db to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.

  • How do I rearrange the icons?

How do I rearrange the icons..If I want linked in on the last page and the telephone on the first...how do I do that?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If I understand correctly, you wish to move the icons on the homescreen around to better suit you?  To do so, press and hold an icon for five seconds.  The icons will start to pulsate.  With your finger still on the icon, move it to wherever you wish on the homescreen.  To move it to a different page of the homescreen, move it all the way to the right or left of a screen and hold it.  Within a second it will automatically appear on the next or previous page of your homescreen.
    I hope that helps you.
    - If my response has helped you, please click "Options" beside my post and mark it as solved. Clicking the "thumbs up" icon near the bottom of my response would also be appreciated.

  • Stack icon.  How do I get it onto the dock?

I do not have a stack icon on my dock. I have tried dragging the "download" folder from "finder" onto the dock and right-clicking but all that does is produce all the downloads as a grid. I want my applications etc to appear as a "stack" and I cannot see how to do that. All help gratefully received.

Hi David and Welcome to Apple Community.
First, when you drag a folder to the Dock, be sure it is the original and not an alias.
Be sure to drag it to the right side of the divider line on the side with Trash.
If you are doing it correctly, a right click should produce a contextual menu with "Fan, Grid, List and Automatic". From what you say I think you want List view, so choose that.
    Let us know.
