Reason 2.5 on MBP

any of you audio duudes out there know if Reason version 2.5 will work with my MBP ?
will it work straight after install or do I need to download an update it?
will it work with the OS X 10.4.9 update?
I can't find any information on the propelerhead website
Thanks in advance

Yeh indeed it is.
However I'm getting a copy from a friend and it's version 2.5 that he has ( he uses windows ) but from what I can tell ( as far as I know, only the current versions ) Reason ships on a set of multi format discs.

  • Any reason to not use MBP's SSD?

Is there any reason to not go with the SSD that comes with a MBP? Seems there isn't much in savings and performance over equivalent (after market) drives. I'm just wondering if it is really worth it...given Apple won't support it.

I have the more expensive variety of MacBook Air, with the small SSD drive. I have to say, I sold my previous MacBook Pro because it was too bulky to carry around all day and use in planes/trains, but I wasn't ready for the tremendous increase in startup speed I got in an otherwise weaker machine! The MBP was from last June, the 17", 2.8 GHz, 4 GB of RAM, and NVIDIA 9600M of VRAM.
Well, the allegedly weaker MacBook Air beats that MBP hands down for read times, i.e. at startup and firing up apps. All of this because of the SSD (vs. the pathetic stock 5,400 RPM HDD in the MBP).
This was a revelation, and I will, from now on, shell out the money to never again use a spin-drive in a laptop. No more sluggishness.

  • Reason to buy a MBP Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi
what is the best reason to buy a macbook pro over a macbook, what makes the pro better than the normal macbook, what can you do on a pro that you cant on a macbook??? as im looking at buying the top end macbook or the lower priced macbook pro.
    Thanks

As subjective as your question is, so are the answers you’re likely to receive. That said; consider the features between the two offerings. Basically, buy as much computer as you can afford, based on your specific needs. Factors such as display resolution; screen size, Firewire, weight and mobility all play a roll on your ability to do certain things. In my case, I opted for the 15-inch MacBook Pro fully configured, and the FW400 does me just fine. Likewise, the 15-inch provides me with a balance between performance and a manageable size for travel and general portability.

  • Config. a New MBP and Wanting Some Advice.

(I apologize for the spelling errors ahead of time, but I need to hit the sack. However, I wanted to get this out since I do need to make a final decision on the new MBP early am. Getting feedback, other people's experiences, pointing out my crazy way of thinking, etc. all help me.)
    Hello-
I am configuring a new 17" MBP. I have a ton of questions mostly because I stopped updating the OS at Tiger 10.4.11. Due to being accepted into a grad.school of architecture, panning, and preservation earlier than I thought, I will not be able to do what I was planning. that was learning Leopard on a friend's computer while taking what I thought was my last upper division course and having the basics of that OS, and having SL on the new 17" MPB for school. which I am now starting 4 months before I thought.
I stopped at the Tiger version because Macs were real hard for me to learn and I am still probably way behind what most kids can do. (Oh, just out of the blue, what does it mean when Apple uses OS X a lot? (Are all of the Operating Systems OS X or how does that work?)
Any feeling on skipping over Leopard and getting a Mac with SL installed, if indeed that is what they are now doing.
I could go of on some more technical questions but I am going to not make this too long and ask m last question about the iPods. When they fist came out, I tried one and I broke it. it told me to install this software on the Pod but it already had it installed on it and I could not get it to work after that. The second time, I was exercising with it and I guess the jogging on the treadmill was too hard on the hard drive and it was out flat and cold as ice.
So, I just switched t my old FM Sony and used that but I would like to get an iPod with the new Mac and hopefully use it with iTunes to download the thousands of songs I have purchased o iTunes onto the iPod. Any suggestions on how to learn using it? I am sure it is simple for most of you and you guys are laughing at me, but am serious, there has got to be another person out there, who did not grasp how to use it like the rest of the world.
Also, I have never understood why Apple does not come with a practical Owner's Manual? Every time I look up something it is not there or has such little written about that are, it does me no good. I have heard about the Missing manuals and that they have one coming out for th iPods.
any recommendation on an iPod for a beginner? Not something too large but comfortable, holds up to a clumsy big person, like I hope my MacBook Pro will. What is the name of the one you recommend and anything else as far as ear plugs or security straps that will help me keep it intact for awhile? Any resources that yo know of that is a good resource? Any on here in a section some people have sent me to but I cannot seem to find the Article section in the Apple Support area but I know there are a lot of good articles on how to do a lot of stuff somewhere. maybe it is not as organized as I assumed it was. it seems so good, I wold even like to have it on hard copy here at my desk, but probably copyright problems there.
thanks for any recommendations and accessories for the iPod. I do not really have thousands and thousands of music I would like to download into m iPod.
I'll sneak one last one in here, are the Macs with 2 graphics architecture really something that is needed, or maybe I do not understand how the 2 that are used-NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated and NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT discrete graphics processors used all the time when needed (which is determined by the software like games, architecture apps, etc.? I know in my are I will need this for sure but I just do not understand it like I should. I will read up on it but if anybody has any "bits and pieces" that could help me understand why the average "Joe" would get a notebook with this intense graphic ability, I just do not understand.
I also understand that you can turn them on and off or use one or two, but is this something the user can do or the notebook does? I was also wondering if these intense graphic cards draw from their own dedicated power or what? Is this e of the reasons why the new MBP give one the ability to put up to 8 GB of pretty intense RAM in this machine.
the 13 MBP does not have both graphic cards, right? But it will take up to 8 GB of RAM. I am not getting something or my technology skills need to be worked on.
The mini display port which seems like most notebooks are installing now, allows for pure digital connection to external displays. Can somebody give me a few examples of what this would be? Are they talking about larger displays that work off of the notebook but sit o your desk or can be used to watch a movie? I am not familiar with the term "pure digital.
OK, thanks a ton. Sorry again if it is not clear but I need to it the sack. I really appreciate being able to come to a place like this and get some pro help.
BTW, if anybody has come across some rude or strange posts using this Profile Name, I have been having trouble with my 2 sons doing this stuff. I have a rule that all computers are open to anybody as long as they ask if they can use it and do not snoop around looking for personal stuff. One of them found this site and ...well, long story but I am trying to deal with it like my family deals with problems like this--not the typical way most families will deal with this, but I know it will stop now.

You can't edit a post after anyone else has responded to it, and you can't ever completely delete it — but during the short time it's available for editing (30 minutes or so, if no one has responded), you can delete all the text from it.
Maybe you could try prioritizing your questions, so folks here will know which ones are most important to you and focus on those first?

  • MBP and the Thermal Paste Discussions

I've read with interest the postings on this web site regarding the MBP heat issues and the possibility that too much thermal paste is causing that problem. I've spent quite a few years designing computer motherboards using Intel processor chips, and want to share some thoughts on the topic. I only mention my background because one thing this business has taught me is that we can all be easily mislead by our test data if our process for gathering the data isn't rigorous (and, believe me, I've learned that lesson many times).
First, the excess thermal paste is definitely a problem, regardless of whether it is the root cause of the heat issue. Some of the photos posted on the various web sites show thermal paste covering bypass capacitors on the chip carriers (the green fiberglass boards that carry the CPU and GPU die). Thermal pastes can cause stray capacitances that can interfere with circuit operation. Standard industry practice is to use only as much paste as is necessary to achieve a layer that is about as thin as a single layer of tissue paper (or less). The amount used by Apple is far too large, particularly because the paste in coming into contact with other electrical components and conductors. A common failure mode associated with degraded bypass capacitors is random (and unrepeatable) crashes due to corrupted digital data in the processor chip.
In addition, all thermal pastes contain various types of fluids. Over time, these fluids evaporate, and frequently they condense elsewhere inside a computer. When CD drives were first introduced years ago, a common cause of mid-lifetime failures was condensates on the optics of the laser. The condensation fogs the lens and interferes with the ability of the laser to focus while reading and writing data. The contamination was traced to outgassing by thermal pastes, greases, sulfurized elastomers, and similar items used to build the computer. (Note that the Apple service manual for the MBP refers to the thermal paste as “thermal grease”.) Consumer electronics manufacturers learned to minimize the use of such materials in computer designs. The amount of thermal paste shown in the Apple service manual is very large, and I wouldn't rule out that it might contribute to future DVD drive failures.
It is difficult to say, based on the available data, that reducing the amount of thermal paste actually contributes to improving the thermal behavior of the MBP. Part of the problem is that the procedure to remove the pastes involves disassembling the laptop, and this introduces the possibility that the disassembly/reassembly process is inadvertently fixing the problem.
First, the high case temperatures could be the result of loose or poorly placed thermal sensors. If the disassembly/reassembly process fixed a loose sensor, or loose sensor electrical connection, or placed the sensor in a better position, you would get lower case temperatures, and possibly (inadvertently) attribute this to less paste.
Second, the cooling system design in the MBP requires that the die caps on the chip carriers be pressed tightly against the pads on the heat sink, so that heat is transferred efficiently. If the MBP is not assembled properly, (i.e., if the logic board mounting screws are not properly torqued, or the logic board is not mechanically aligned properly to ensure a tight fit to the heat sink), it is possible that this will manifest itself as high case temperatures. In the Intel processor chips there are two paths for heat to travel – out of the die cap, and through the electrical contacts to the motherboard. If the die cap isn’t properly cooled, heat will instead go into the motherboard, and the case temperature will rise. There is a possibility that the disassembly/reassembly process will fix a loose or misaligned logic board problem, with the result that the case temp will be reduced.
Also, if you work through the details of the thermal model that results from excess paste, it's hard to see how it would result in more heat to the case and less to the heat sink. Most of the photos on the web appear to show thin paste on top of the die, indicating that there was probably a low thermal resistance path to the heat sink prior to disassembly. The excess paste to the sides will simply further reduce the thermal resistance between the chip carrier and the heat sink. I may be missing something, but it's hard to envision how this lower thermal resistivity between the CPU and the heat sink drives more heat into the case. But it is also possible that the disassembly process destroys evidence of the actual connection to the heat sink, so this failure mode is hard to judge.
The best way to determine if removing the excess paste is actually helping would be to measure the exhaust air temperature from the cooling fans before and after removing the excess paste. I haven't seen such data, but if it were taken, and showed that the exhaust air was at a significantly higher temperature after the fix than before it, then we would know that the fix worked. If not, then the heat is going elsewhere, and it is possible that fix has actually made things worse.
Finally, all the symptoms we're seeing can be explained by poor software calibration and/or incorrect software control of the CPU clock speed. I wouldn't rule out a software fix at his point.
I'm not saying removing the paste is not a fix, only that there are still open questions that remain to be answered. It would be hard for me to recommend that anyone rework an MBP for the thermal problem in the absence of additional data.
For myself, I own an MBP, and though I have access to an electronics lab and some great technicians, I intend to buy Applecare, and in the meantime wait for a fix (or at least more information) from Apple.
Best of luck to everyone who has this issue - thats what we get for being early adopters.

Well I replaced my thermal compound and the temperature on my cpu went down and the temperature of my case went down also. The fans also kick in sooner leaving me to believe that the heat is being properly distributed the heatsink whereas before it was not as there was too much thermal compound making it act like an insulator.
I cannot say if the exhaust air is any hotter, but I know overall my laptop is much more cooler and never gets extremely HOT. Even under heavy loads the areas where it used to get really hot, above f keys, palm area, underneath the MBP are not hot to the point where someone could burn themself at all.
I really do hope that Apple does address this issue because I could not live with the heat before, I always had to hook up an external keyboard because my hands got too sweaty from the palm rest and the keyboard. Now everything is operating like any other laptop I've owned and I am a very satisifed Apple user. Let's hope that Apple is really looking into it and will have a reasonable answers for all MBP users in a reasonable amount of time.

  • MBP 13" not really faster than MB 13"

    Hi
I want to upgrade my 4 year old MB 13". I really like the size... I waited a long time for the new processors to come. Now I discovered that the 13" model does not feature the i5 and i7 processors and I heard that the 13" MBP cannot be compared to the 15" model in terms of performance.
I will do more photo editing (photoshop) and video editing (final cut express) and my old MB is getting really slow...
Any advice on choice of Macbook - Pro or normal...
    Thanks!

    Hi niefl,
First of all (and I know this isn't quite what your are asking) although the new MBP isn't as fast as the new 15" model, it is a LOT quicker than a four year old MB. We have an early 2 GHz black CD MacBook (about the same generation as yours), a later , Core 2 Duo, MB, a SantaRosa 15" MBP from 2007, and a June 2009 13" MBP . Even the June 2009 13" model is much, much faster in any situation that requires processor power for things like photo editing or video editing than the early 2 GHz MB .
As far as comparison with the late 2009 polycarbonate MB goes, the benchmarks published by MacWorld (see http://www.macworld.com/article/147071/2010/04/13inchmacbookprobenchmarks.html) indicate that the new MBP 13 is a bit faster than the MB but not by a huge margin - maybe about 10% on most tasks.
But there are other very good reason to get the MBP if you can afford the extra couple of hundred dollars. For video work the huge difference is firewire. USB is better on recent Macs than it was in the days when your old MB was released, but it is still slower than FW400 and much, much slower than the Firewire 800 available on the MBP but not the MB.
Secondly the "standard" base configuration of the MBP comes with 4 gig of RAM, while the MB comes with just 2Gig. To do what you want to do efficiently you will need at least 4 gig of RAM. You will really notice the benefit of this with both photo editing and video work. Simply upgrading the RAM on the MB to 4 gig will cost you around half the difference in price between the two machines anyway!
Thirdly, the MBP comes with an illuminated keyboard. I never realised how useful this would be until I obtained my first MBP. Once you have been using one for a while it is hard to go back to the non-iluminated one.
Fourthly the MBP is a little lighter and slimmer than the MB.
Fifthly, our own experience has been that the aluminium MBPs are substantially tougher than the polycarbonate ones. Not only are they much more scratch resistant, but they are also less prone to case fractures through minor knocks.
Sixth, they have batteries / power management systems that give you longer battery charge life.
Seventh, they provide full sound output through the minidisplay port if you wish to hook up to an HDMI TV (unlike the MB)
    Finally, they look better!
If you assume that you will have to upgrade the MB to 4 Gig of RAM anyway, then you get all the rest for just $100!
Pretty hard to beat when it comes to value IMHO!
Having said all of that, there is no doubt that the base model i5 MBP 15" is a very sweet computer, and ideal for the purposes you speak of, but if your budget, or demands for portability, means that you are choosing between the 13" MBP and the MB, I think the current model of the MBP13 wins hands down when it comes to overall value, and is a bit faster too.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Drive Dell 3008 WFP From ThunderBolt/Mini-Display Port to Display Port

I am trying to find the reason why my new MBP Retina Display can not drive my 30 inch Dell 3008 WFP Monitor.  When I connect them the MBP flickers as if it is detecting the display, but I never get a picture.  Does any one know if this is possible, and if not the reasons why ?  Should I have chosen a Mini-displayport to DVI or VGA connection instead?  Thanks.

Sorry I did not make that clear.  Instead of the Thunderbolt/Mini-DisplayPort to Displayport. which is the connection I am trying now with the results described...basically nothing.  Monitor knows there is a connection it just says no signal from computer.  MPB does not even show the monitor in display prefences.  I tried holding option and pressing "Detect Displays" and nothing shows up.

  • What bit of "Please don't phone me" doesn't BT get...

What bit of "Please don't phone me" doesn't BT get?
I have experienced a cataloge of corrosponce with BT dealing with the bad broadband speed issues that I have had on my connection since last november. Too long to list here see the link below
    Terrible broadband speed
Its fair to say that individual BT operators and advisors have been courtious and have tried to be helpfull most of the time but...BT have failed to find a long term fix for my issues.
The last month up until yesterday I was lucky enough to experience a wopping and reasonable steady 1.5 mbps...wow! Seriously it was fantasic! Compared to a miserable 0.3mbps or worse. I felt I was getting what I was paying for! Then the bill came in (and was wrong yet again!)! and coincidently? the speed returned to its former low!
Without baffling the humble user with scientific terminology, it turns out the problem is caused by line noise - not of my own making! Well, I noticed that incoming calls on the landline telephone were knocking my broadband out, after a while I made the desision to dissconnect the phone because of the issues with calls knocking my speed down. I imformed as many of my familly and friends not to call me on my phone and use my cell instead. However I can't stop random incoming calls, which sends the blue lights on my hub to flickering orange. This in turn equates to the stupid adsl2 software that BT use, knocking down my profile and hence speed!
When are BT going to get to grips with their stiffling system that takes up to ten days to recallibrate itself?
Their old system used to work fine at this rural address, quickly reasserting itself if there was a line knockout or interference - which is common in rural locations. Now it seems in order for BT to advertise super fast speeds to most that can benefit from it who live within a couple miles of the exchange. The rest of us that don't, have to suffer for the sake of this new adsl2 system. Its a shambles and at times heartbreaking and BT still expect us to pay the same as anyone else!
Dont be fooled. If you live in a rural location or more than two miles from the exchange, the chances are that if you are experiencing loss of BB speeds recently, whence before you had a reasonable service. Its down to the new BT adsl2 system they have brought in. Its not your fault, don't let the customer support advisors tell you otherwise! At least thats my experience!
The new system is more sensitive to noise, true it may be marginally faster, but as it turns out at what cost?
I have had a dozen engineers who have come round and each remarkably have "found and fixed the problem" then I get a reasonable speed for a few days before it drops again as of yet I have not had a pernament fix!
The loss of speed issues have led to a series of 'knock on effects' including my wireless BB BT mobile going beserk leading to a £260.00 bill for one month!
#Being charged £40.00 for Broadband phone calls I did not make - I had to call in the police for the theft of phone calls made before BT would take me seriously - they said there was no record and that it was impossible to hack BT broadband phones! In the end they found a 'mistake' but it was a **bleep** of a fight to get them to admit that!
Even after that, they cut me off (for non payment of these calls) and are now trying to charge me a reconnection fee!
Also I am paying for an 'unlimited' broadband package and broadband anywhere - which is a complete joke because I am lucky if I can get broadband anywhere at all!I know I really need to sort this out - but there is no one dpartment it seems that can deal with it all
After my BT Broadband Anywhere phone freaked out (Down to issues related to my BT hub losing connections - I ended up asking BT Mobile to dissconect my gprs for fear of it happening again - even though I was paying for the 'unlimited 'gprs service) and the 'stolen' BB phone issues, I dissconected my wireless completely!
So NO BB on my BT mobile, on average I am lucky if I get a week a month on maybe 1mbps, the other three weeks on 0.3mpps on my home broadband.
The trouble is that I am so sick and tired of being pushed from department to department and repeating myself on a weekly or even daily basis. I can never get one individual who can deal with all my problems in one go, #I am absolutely fatigued with it all.
Going somewhere else is not an option I am imformed where I live.
I have written letters to the customer service department and they have phoned me back and said things often at times when I am off-guard , so its hard to remember the details.
Now my policy is to have everything put in writing.
Despite using BT's 'contact us' form to report the latest speed issues and ticking the box that says
"respond by email" and stating "Please don't phone me" as well on my message body....I get a series of phone calls! Both on my mobile number and on my landline!
No comprehensible message returned as requested by email but phone calls from polite and friendly Indian help advisors...and guess what?   The calls the BT staff have made on my landline, has knocked my profile down even further!
Even though I headed my message with "Please do not phone me on my landline phone number"
    How ignorant is that?
I have even asked for my landline calls to be diverted, but that costs £5.00 pm - I don't see why I should have to pay for this.
What I would like is for one BT person who can sort out All of these problems for me
(That'l be technical department, security department, billing department, sales department, customer service department and more and then back again - I hav'nt got the stomach or time for being pushed from pillar to post!)
    - but from BT that is probablly asking too much!
I fell I have had so many problems with the BT Broadband service, with the time I have spent trying to get things sorted, BT should be paying me! And  they should take a good hard look at how their system works!
Bt have a **bleep** cheek to charge me £150.00 per quarter for all this!
My father pays £96.00 for this same service, gets 8.00mbpsm, can use his landline and hubphone, can use his wireless, plus BT vision as well - How fair is this?
I think its time for Ofcom

It would be Otello and not Ofcom but in my experience they are very much in the pocket of BT (not least since they are funded by the telcom companies).
I suggest you try contacting the mods here and see if they can help

  • Cannot print to a shared printer on Windows

    Hello,
I am a new user to Mac OS. Since ive bought it, about 2-3 months id say, im unable to print to a shared printer (via LAN) from my MBP. I have tried a lot of things and even tried Apple Support in my city (which isnt any good) and Printer Company support (Canon), they both are blaming on each other. Leaving my problem unsolved.
    Here is the set up:
    Win XP PC
    Mac  OS X 10.6 MBP
    2 Printers;
    1. Canon LBP 2900
    2. Canon MF4350d
both shared over LAN to other PCs.
Basically, Id like to ask a few question I think might help me.
    1. What kind of driver should i use while printing ? Im using the Generic one. I tried printing with 4350d driver, didnt help either. No driver available for LBP2900.
    2. Do i need to make any settings on my Win XP or Mac OS X ?
any help would be appreciated. as this is really getting under my skin.
    Thanks.
    -Raghav

I didnt mean to upset anyone. Its really cute to see every MAC person getting so upset even with the slightest negative comment for Apple. .
See as far as I am concerend I perceive this problem as a MAC related problem. Because my other Windows PCs arent having the same issue. I know MAC has some advantages over Win, Im not debating that.
Try to look at it from my perspective. I have used windows for about 12-15 years untill I got my MBP a few months back. The reason why I chose MBP was because I was impressed with what Apple did with iPhone 4 so I thought I should try an OS which is so hyped to be better than Windows. Truth is I am having a lot of problems with it.
    1. Compatiblity is a major issue. Maybe not in North America. But I am from a small place in India. Printers, websites, etc.
    2. Support/Service is pathetic. No ones knows whats going on. They are blaming each other (Apple & Canon)
    3. It really over heats ! upto 80 Degrees C ! I always heard MBs are super cool and all that. Truth is I cant use it on my bare lap. Whereas I got a HP Notebook at least 5 years old that hears up less than my MBP.
    4. Resoltion is so high I cant read text properly. OS X isnt a resolution independent OS, unlike Win.
These are just few. I am not saying Im competely unsatisfied with the product. I do like its style. Its battery performance. Keyboard. Trackpad.
But If an average consumer gets irritated in day to day tasks, then that OS isnt for the majority out there. Thats all I am saying. I have to look up for so many tweaks into Mac OS to make up for some basic things that Win has over Mac.
Anyways, dont get offended. nothing against you. ITs just im not a fan of Apple. If  could Id return my MBP, but I cant so. Here I am

  • Disc space on external hd vanishes

    Hi all,
any help on the two following problems is greatly appreciated:
I have a MBP (Leopard) to which I periodically connect various external USB-harddrives for backups, photo-editing, etc. I keep having two issues that I haven't been able to resolve by searching the forum and the web:
    1) Two of the hds are small pocket USB-drives (Western Digital 320 GB, Medion 160 GB) which are formatted in FAT32. To my knowledge, I should be able to read and write, as well as delete, with the disc adjusting the available space. Unfortunately, the drive will not render previously occupied disc space. I.e. when I copy a 40 GB photo-folder from my internal HD to the external 320 GB one, and afterwards delete it, the disc space is still indicated as used in the info-tab, and the available disc space is still down to 280 GB. I've come as far as to not having enough disc space for my needs, but also don't have enough space available on either hd to back everything up on one and reformat. I am, however, not convinced anyway that this would solve the problem as the discs were formatted using my own MBP the first time around as well! Also, it seems to be a systematic error, because it's happening to both drives (they're both fairly new, < than 1 year old).
    2) My third external hd poses another problem, which might be easily solved: In this case, the drive is a bit older (but still works fine) and was previously used with a WIN-laptop - it is therefore still formatted in NTFS. In order to be able to also write on it using my MBP, I downloaded this program:
    <a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://kent.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/catacombae/NTFS-3G_20 09.4.4-catacombae.dmg
It resolved the problem immediately after the install, however, a today (a day later, after having had the MBP shut down and restarted) it is not working anymore. Even after installing the software again, no success.
Any ideas or suggestions? I will be a MUCH happier person if I can get all my back-ups done very soon, so PLEASE help
    Thanks a bunch!!

    Hi neuroanatomist,
many thanks for the swift reply - I did as you said and was in fact able to free up the missing disc space, big YAY!
I do have a quick follow up question though, if I may:
I simply went ahead and emptied my trash whilst having the two external USB-drives connected (as you suggested). If I wanted to, however, for whatever reason not delete my MBP-trash, is there any other way to get rid of the invisible .Trashes folder (or empty it, if that's the more practical/desirable solution)? I have to admit that I wasn't even able to find/see the folder, because I do not know how to make invisible folders visible in this case...
As for the commercial software: I will give it a try if I have not figured out another way by the end of the week. So if anyone else has a suggestion as to how I could solve the problem without spending any money, I'd still be grateful for a quick shout.
Again, thank you neuroanatomist!! (EDIT: ....and JoeyR, of course :))

  • Macbook Pro freezes often after the hard drive replaced

Hi I just had the hard drive of my 17" mbp replaced at the Apple Store. The reason I brought my mbp in was because the Disk Utility couldn't fix my HD's problem (loud noise, extremely hot, slow..and disk utility couldn't run repair), and the genius bar person suggested I replace the hard drive.
However after I had my compter back, even though it is not as hot as before and the Disk Utility showed everything is normal now, the really loud fan (possibly fan I guess) noise still sounds very crazy. I was just doing some web surfing, light work stuff, but the HD area just roared. Also my computer freezes so often now, and apprears busy (showing the rainbow color spinning ball) quite frequently even when I am just using Safari and Mail. This is quite annoying and makes me worried more.
Do you guys have any suggestions? I could bring it back to the store again but it was really a trouble. Any ideas will be highly appreciated. Thanks!!

Thank you both. Before I take it back, I would like to confirm one last thing: how often should the mbp make loud fan noise? Or actually we should never hear the fan noise? I really don't remember when I just got this computer (June 2006) I used to hear fan running like this. But I do know if the CPU was too busy while I were using Adobe programs or play WOW or somehing on my old computer, the fan of my old computer (PC) was pretty loud. I am just wondering if the situation I am experiencing is normal or not before I send it back. Thanks!

  • 2010 15" HiRes Anti-Glare video and photo viewing issues

In January 2012 I bought my MBP through Apple's refurb dept.
After some weird glitchy things, which a recent format may have fixed, and some overall speed issues that i cant figure out, my monitor seems to suck.
Movies are WAY too dark, and while I can fix it a little in the DVD options, the movies look like they're on a 13 year old plasma TV, not too vivid and not too sharp.
I also do photo editing which is why I bought my 24" matte screen iMac in 2006 and why I bought the upgraded screen on this MBP. But my iMac screen played back movies and photos much sharper and with better color rendition than this MBP screen. (On top of that, my 3GB iMac was peppier and just seemed faster running programs than this 8GB MBP.)
    Help.
I can't really go to an apple store because I moved from the US to Japan. The move here is the whole reason I bought the MBP, and now I miss my old iMac.

That said .. please keep in mind that running your machine with faster card will cause it heat up more and drain battery rather quickly .. gfx card status has a nice switch in it's preferences that allows you to set the preferred card for machines power states
    hope this helps

  • Osx 10.6.8 inability to upgrade to OSX 10.8.1

2 of my Mac Pros are unable to upgrade to osx 10.8.1 from 10.6.8. There is absolutely no technical reason give, just a popup indicating they are not eligible for the upgrade. I found some information listed here : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1159#mac_pro but I am unable to verify if this is the reason as we do not have records of purchase dates for the systems in question. I have upgraded similiar model MBP's, though again without our purchase records I cannot say if they were bought at a different time and if that is the reason some of our MBP's took the update without issue.

You sound like you have a Mac Pro you would have had to know the type of memory, eligible graphics cards, and... come to learn about pre-2008 3,1's having 32-bit EFI instead of 2008 and later having 64-bit EFI (UEFI) firmware... which is the technical reason. That it cannot use 64-bit graphic drivers and kernel mode, and the PCIe 1.1 bus.

  • Open Tabs do not seem to be working

    Hi All,
For some reason iCloud on my MBP is not picking up 'open tab' on my iPhone, can anyone help?
    Much appreciated.
    Les

What do you mean by "nulls the foreign key"? That's a CMP field (or equiv
for BMP) that is a foreign key to another table in the database? And that
foreign key has an integrity constraint on it?
So you remove the row from one table and null the reference to that row in
the other and you think that is all being done in one tx but the database
raises an error on the constraint, right? Have you tried this outside of
Java/EJB ... just in some SQL access window or something to verify that it
works at all? (Just in case ....)
Secondly, verify that both EJBs are using the same connection (=transaction
    in this case).
    Peace,

Sorry - the subject line sucks.
    Here's the problem:
Have one session bean and two entity beans, with Required transactionsupport.
    >
The session bean calls the first entity bean and removes it.
The session bean then calls the second entity bean, and nulls the foreignkey
to the first entity bean (which is in the same transaction, and thusshould be
    fine).
It throws a SQL Exception relating to the integrity constraint. It seemsthat
removing the first entity bean is not being done in the same transactionas nullifying
    the referential constraint.
The database connection pool is set up as a TXDataSource.
    Thanks.
