Reasons to switch

I need some help from you all. My windows computer at work is due to be replaced and I'd like to get a mac. However, the I.S. dept is not mac friendly and I must justify why I need a mac. "it's better" won't do it...
I currently do video editing, graphic design, data visualization and power point, as part of my job. I also collaborate closely with a web designer who is on a mac.
I need 3 to 5 technical bullet points to help me sell my case. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
D

Does the web designer work for the company? If so, why does he/she get to use a Mac?
If the new computer is to have Windows Vista, point the I.S. guy to reports of performance, compatibility, and stability issues. Just Google "Windows Vista" to read such articles, for example.
http://www.informationweek.com/news/windows/showArticle.jhtml;jsessionid=1NHNS0R 0UCR3UQSNDLPCKH0CJUNN2JVN?articleID=204203975&_requestid=39920
Basically, a PC with Vista is wasting a significant part of its CPU power running the interface. So the OS is making you less productive by default, even before launching any applications.
If it is to have Windows XP, point out that Windows XP was released in 2001, almost *7 years* ago. Microsoft has stated it will stop offering Windows XP soon because it is too old. Mac OS X has been continuously updated during that time, with Leopard arriving November of 2007, less than *7 months* ago. It has productivity raising features like Spaces and QuickLook that are not available on Windows. You are not sapping your creativity and productivity by constantly worrying about viruses and other malware, or by having to install, maintain, and run performance-robbing anti-malware software. Mac OS X is built on Unix; a tech guy should appreciate that fact. You can even run Windows on it, if necessary, through a virtual machine (VMware Fusion) or directly (Apple's Boot Camp).
Finally, ask the I.S. guy why he thinks most creative professionals choose to use Macs instead of a Windows machine? The non-technical reason is that Macs encourage creativity by not getting in the way the user, and by not being "in your face" all the time like Windows. Tell him you don't really know the technical reasons, but as the tech-expert, he should feel obligated to find out why. As a creative professional, it should not be up to you to justify (for technical reasons) why you want to use the same tool most other creative professionals use. That's his job... tell him to go do it and figure out why you should be using a Mac.

  • Tell me a good reason to switch to Firefox 5.

Hello, I am using Firefox 3.6 and I am glad with it. I have tried Firefox 4 and had a bad experience: unusable and very slow, and I had a big trouble to get rid of it, because I could not uninstall! Please tell me a good reason to try Firefox 5. Tell me that it is exactly like 3.6 (but... why should I change?)

I wouldn't be worried about Firefox 3.6 reaching the 1000th revision or more.
I don't like 4 and if 5 looks the same I will not like it too. The new version is a mess and does not work better than the old one. When 3.6 will end support I am going to search for another browser.

  • How do you stop FireFox 9 from switching to a newly opened tab?

As the title states, many times when I click "Open in a New Tab," Firefox switches to (or focuses on) it, which is annoying as HELL! IE had this option and no way to turn it off for a while and was one of my main reasons for switching to Firefox. Now it seems that Firefox has either eliminated this ability or hidden it so well that I can't find it! What pisses me off the most is that this option WAS in Firefox 3.6! Can anyone help this frustrated user out?

  • Android user about to make the switch

Hello everyone, let me start off by saying I HATE Apple. Absolutely hate it. You may be asking, "if you hate it so much why switch?". Well the answer to that is simple, Android doesn't compare.
Now matter how many blogs, articles or videos you look up you will see that, on paper, Android is the winner. I bought into this and got myself a DROID, which is a great phone but not what I expected. When it comes to specifications and features the Android will always win. Why? Because essentially the Android system can do anything. Does that mean it will do it efficiently or effectively, no, and that's what I soon found out.
Here are my reasons for switching in an easy to follow list format.
    1. The iPhone is smooth, very smooth. Moving from app to app or something as simple as scrolling up and down a webpage really shows that Apple has put time and effort into making sure thing's were perfect, unlike Android.
The Android system (for now) is clunky and unusable, at least by my standards. It has it's good days and it's bad days. At it's worst I can't get a program to open for more than a few seconds before it crashes, sometimes crashing the whole phone with it. The thing is, Android is still fairly new to the smart phone game and it is getting better. I would say within 4-5 years, the Android OS will have the smoothness and grace that the iPhone currently has, but until then I guess I will have to "sleep with the enemy".
    2. The iTunes app store is where it's at. No more will I be fooled by the open marketplace.
The iTunes app store has something like three times as many apps available compared to the Android app store (I don't know for sure). That in itself is a winner, but it gets even better. The Android app store is FILLED duplicate apps and apps that simply don't work unless you have the correct phone model. Also the figure given by Android is the number of Apps available in all countries. So you can take the 100,000 Android apps (or whatever it is) and cut that in half if you live in the US. Then take that 50,000 and cut it in half again for duplicate/phone specific apps (at least). Now you are left with 25,000 apps that may or may not work, because no one is taking the time to test them and there is no screening process for apps.
2.5. The iTunes app store is filled with useful well written apps that I will actually use.
After looking over the apps on my friends phone and browsing the apps on iTunes I have come to the conclusion that the apps are just plain better on the iPhone.
    3. Stability. This is a big factor to me. Ask anyone with an Android phone how stable it is. Truthfully they should tell you it's not as stable as they would like. I never hear this from iPhone users, and when handling an iPhone it's apparent that the phone feels genuinely stable.
    4. The fourth and final reason is by far the biggest reason I am switching. Netflix. Yes I am buying an iPhone almost entirely because they now have a Netflix app.
When I first learned about this I was with a friend and her son driving in her car. Her son kept yelling about watching some childrens show. I had no idea what he was talking about so I just waited to see what my friend was going to do. The next thing I know, she pulls out her iPhone, and on the screen I see Netflix in white with a red background... She pulled it out and turned on a show for him to watch, then handed the phone to him. She did it like it was second nature to her like, "Duh I can watch Netflix on my iPhone!". I wanted to slap her for not telling me sooner...
As sad as this may sound, I am a movie and television fanatic. My life revolves around it. That might make me sound like a couch potato but I like to think of it as a hobby. Ever since I found Netflix a few years ago (specifically the instant watch) my life has been happier, haha.
Well that is about it. From an Apple hating Android user to an Apple hating iPhone user. At least for now, until Android get's there stuff together and makes a better working OS. Thanks for reading!
    Andy

Welcome Andy, I think. Too bad you hate Apple, but for whatever reason that may be (you didn't really say why), you should be very happy with the iPhone. I myself think Apple's a great company. It's an American success story and there aren't that many of those thriving today. Their products are innovative and as you've found with your Droid, the hype didn't match your expectations. The iPhone will match your expectations and then some.
So again, welcome to the forums. Maybe your iPhone experience will make you an Apple fan......

  • Why did I switch?

We had two flip phones thru Verizon.  Used it for phone calls only, any text separate charge.  In nov I purchased I phone 5s.  Continued the same phone service with verizon.  I used my wifi thru my land line phone service.  I was getting my land line service and Internet thru frontier.  We were unhappy with frontier so we looked into verizon for all our needs.  We purchase a router, a cell phone convertor for our land line phone number, a new flip phone for hubby.  We were placed on the share everything plan with 6 gb.  I was told 6 gb would be more than enough data for my monthly internet use.  WRONG.  I use my laptop for paying bills.  I use my ipad for playing games, such as word with friend, using Facebook, sending and rec emails.  I may watch a few videos each day but usually no longer than 30 seconds to a minute at a time.  Once in awhile take a picture and either post it to Facebook or email it.  I don't play action games or download music, books, movies etc.  I'm day 5 into my billing cycle and have used 2.446 gb.  At this rate I'll go over my 6 gb before the end of the cycle.  I have talk to the local office, their suggestions was to stop auto updates on my laptop ( was on auto update), to go somewhere and use free wifi to update my laptop on a weekly basis.  WHAT?????    I have cut back on my game playing and my data usage keeps being used up at a fast rate.
Does anyone have any suggestions.  I'm so unhappy with verizon and this share everything plan.  I need a plan with limits on phone call minutes and test, with unlimited data.   Does a plan exist with verizon?   If it does I can't find it.  Did read something about a loyalty plan,  does anyone have any info re this plan.
I'm locked into a two year contract and need to find a solution to my data coverage.  UNHAPPY
Thanks for any help I can get.

    Lady47 wrote:
I understand I can increase my data plan, but the main reason we switched to Verizon's was to save some money.  If I have to increase my data plan I will be paying more than with my previous arrangement.
There is no cable in our area, so that is not an option.  My only option for wifi is to get it thru frontier communications.  At the moment I can get high speed, unlimited wifi, 2 year locked in price and no contract for $49.99.  I would use wifi at home, which is were I use most of my internet.  We have unlimited talk/ text, so I would only need a small data plan for the smart phone when I don't have a wifi connection.
Since we have a two year contract with verizon I will have to stay with them and use the 4g router we purchased but only when I don't have wifi.
This is the only solution I can come up with.   If anyone has ant other ideas, please post them.
When you say Frontier wi-fi I assume you mean DSL. wi-fi is just how to distribute your internet through your house. Mobile data as well as satellite is not cheaper and will never be cheaper than cable or DSL internet. Both have limitations that make them inferior. I have cable internet with a 250 GB monthly cap and it's cost $55 a month. Why would I go with Verizon for internet? With their Homefusion internet their cheapest plan is $60 a month as is only 10 GB. their highest data plan is 30 GB which is $120. If I use a Jetpack on their share plans the highest can they offer is 50 GB and they want $335 just for the data. If one has no other choice but either dial-up or satellite then sure Verizon is an option, but you have to live with the limitations with any of those chocies.

  • Mail or gmail? why should i switch?

so i'm a recent switcher. i'm happy happy happy with the things about macos that enable much greater productivity and pleasure when interacting with my little macbook.
so the reason to switch from PC to MAC is very clear. i can easily talk to others and explain why the switch makes sense.
one thing is that i've been a long time gmail user and before that yahoo web mail. i've seen the benefit (especially on the PC) of not having mail stored locally (size, virus etc.)
now i'm thinking about using .mac and macos mail app to handle my mail instead of gmail. ive tried it for a day or two and i haven't had any AHA moments that made the reason for a switch like that clear.
all this to say, how many of you use mail or a webmail client like gmail? what are the reasons why one would use .mac and mail versus gmail?
    any guidance is greatly appreciated.

    Hi Sean,
Take it from someone that has lived and worked around the world most of my life I more than understand your questions on .Mac, mail, web based mail like Yahoo, Gmail, Gmx and the Apple 'mail application' with our Mac's. I know the advantages and disadvantages of them all, been there done that.
As far as becoming a part of .Mac and paying the annual fees? Remember with .Mac you're getting more than just an e-mail address. You get web publishing, some storage space, iPhoto space and more. Whether you decide to use .Mac depends on how much of your world is tied to Apple. If many of your friends use a Mac then it allows more access to them and sharing files, iChat and simply makes connecting your different worlds together. You can sync your mail, address books, iCal, iTunes .... and the list goes on. Again it depends on how much of your life is connect to Apple products.
The advantage to using the Mac's 'mail application' is that you can also use your Gmail account there too. Gmail allows you to connect with a POP connection where Yahoo does not. You can also use the new Gmail desktop. It operates like 'spotlight' that comes with your Mac. It also always Gmail voice and IM chats and more. Check this link:
    <http://www.macworld.com/2007/04/firstlooks/googledesktop/index.php>
If you're new to Mac's it all might take some time figuring out things, but your Mac also makes putting things together way easier than with a PC.
Take it from someone that is in London one day, Paris the next and then Sydney at the end of the week. When your world is connected in sync life is so much easier. Even if you don't have your Mac with you .Mac allows you to have access and control from anywhere and keep it all in sync. In the end it's all about your needs.

  • How do i import a frontpage website into dreamweaver cs5,we're just switching

please don't laugh, we were still stuck in old school

If the files are already on your hard drive, just create a site in Dreamweaver and point to that folder on your hard drive.  If they are just on a server, create a site, enter the remote data in and click the Get button (down arrow) in the file window to get the files off the server and onto your computer for editing.
There is probably a lot more that you will need to go through just knowing how Frontpage code worked, but I assume you already knew that and it was part of the reason for switching to Dreamwaever.  So welcome, and if you have any other questions transferring over or editing pages just feel free to post back.

  • Blocked Stack Ports on 2960X-48FPD-L Stack (Unstable Switch Stack!) Spanning Tree?

I am having an issue where 2 2960X-48FPD-L Switches in a redundant flexstack (stack port 1 SW1 to port  2 SW2 and port 2 SW1 to port 1 SW2) ring.
At first running the 15.0(2).EX5 (and earlier EX3, and EX4) version IOS yielded all the ports on the stack master switch refusing to run spanning tree and would only link in amber and not pass any traffic other than CDP information (the slave switch linked in fine).
I upgraded to 15.2(3)E and this solved the problem of the ports not linking in green and participating in spanning tree.
Now, however, about every week or two I lose connectivity to the switch stack and I was able to go to the switch stack locally and found that for some reason the switch stack is blocking and unblocking VLANs on StackPort1 frequently (see below).  When I was at the site, I sometimes had connectivity, sometimes not.  A stack hard reboot brought everything back up, but this is the second time this has occurred and I would expect the same problem in the next week or so.
Has anyone else run into these issues, and have you found a solution?
I'm guessing that if I either get rid of the redundancy on the switch stack or stack using Ethernet cables between switches the problem will go away, but then what is the point of using stackable switches in a non redundant low speed stack.  It seems to me that Spanning tree thinks that I have a spanning tree loop going on with the stack ports which I didn't even think was possible.
    What do you think?

    Jim,
We have also the same problem with our 2960-X switches (access) connecting to a pair of 4500x (VSS) except our issue is with Portchannel with 2 physical links connecting the 2960xs to the 4500.
If we disconnect one of the physical links from the portchannel everything works fine, but when we connect the same physical link back all users lose connectivity and the physical link starts flapping. We have a ticket open with Cisco and have sent them all the logs and debugs and waiting to hear back from IOS developers.

  • Does Verizon have discounts for those who Switch from At&t?

My husband and I currently have AT&T and terrible service inside our home.  We currently have iPhone 3gs' and want to get iPhone 5's.  We only use cells, so we need a reliable network for our phones.  I know Sprint offers discounts to people who "Switch to Sprint" and was wondering if Verizon did the same.  We are almost out of contract with AT&T and would like to switch to Verizon since we've heard it has better coverage in our particular part of Las Vegas.  In our current plan with AT&T, I have unlimited data and would have to give that up to switch.  Also, I think we'd be paying about $10 more a month each with Verizon if we got iPhone 5's.  I'm wondering if Verizon may also give discounts to people who are credit union members or Costco members or AAA Club members.  I'm looking for a reason to switch now.  Does anyone know if Verizon offers discounts like these?  I can't seem to find a customer service email to ask since I'm not yet a customer.  Thanks!

I don't think Verizon gives discount to switch. As far as your discount you get now you'd have to check with those companies themselves to see if they offer discounts with Verizon.
    No unlimited data with Verizon.
You bill would be easy to figure out. 2 Iphone 5s would be $40 each "line access" or $80. Plus whatever "data" plan you chose. "Data" actually includes the unlimited minutes and unlimited texting.
    1 GB $50
    2 GB $60
    4 GB $70
    6 GB $80
    8 GB $90
    10 GB $100
Data is of course shared. You can actually get up to 20 GB a month if you need it. Just add $10 per 2 GB.
Then there is taxes and fees. For 2 phones should be around $15 or so.
Any discounts you do get come from the "data" part.

  • Why  would an external harddrive switch to root owner

Does anyone know (or try a guess) what could cause an external hard drive to switch owners to root for no reason?
It had it for a while and it was owned by me as in

    (leaving me read only)
I changed it back, but this is very annoying and I would like to find the cause, especially if it starts hapening on a regular basis.  I am not used to "black magic" happening on my Mac, like it happens every day on my windows computer at work:)
    It's MacOS extended (journaled).
    Thanks in advance

I concur with shldr2thewheel that it is of questionable practicality
With that said I assume you want to transfer data that no longer is resident on you HDD.
Enter Time Machine, locate the date and identify the data (note its location) and engage the restore function.
Open DISK UTILITY, select BURN, locate you data from the drop down menu and click Burn.
Beware of the disk capacity limitations.
    Ciao.

  • Switch redo logs hourly to provide point-in-time?

    Hi All,
    Oracle 11G on Windows 2008 R2
I am learning the details of managing backups/restores and want to be able to provide a good point-in-time capability in case of a disaster. Is it good practice to schedule an hourly job that does ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOGFILE; ? Does this cause the redo log to be archived every hour so if I needed to restore, I know that I can at least restore to the previous hour (using the archive logs) and before?
    Thanks in advance

Aman beat me to what I was going to say.  I'll just add a couple of points:
This really needs to established in concert with management, normally called an SLA (Service Level Agreement).  In a nutshell, you define what kinds of failures you allow for, how quickly recoveries or other procedures such as failovers will happen, what uptime is required, and so forth.  Of course, in reality many places won't spend the dollars to properly evaluate these things unless they are about to spend millions on an upgrade, so for ordinary places with ordinary business software the 15-30 minute rule covers many common recovery situations as a first approximation.  Simply asking management often gets a wrong or inadequate answer.
Personally, I find there are times of large loads or updates, so I size redo to handle those by testing, then use the lag target to have a reasonable time switch during normal operations.  This winds up requiring large redo, but archived redo is much smaller, except of course during the heavy times.  The same with undo also; yearly operations or massive updates require large undo, so just keep it around rather than trying to size it under the gun when it fails the next year.  Redo is a critical resource, and may benefit from special filesystem handling, depending on your storage hardware.
Job number one for a DBA is to not lose data, so recovery skills are critical, to the point of sometimes having to push management to do things right when they don't understand the value of their data.

  • K7T Turbo2 keeps switching DMA to PIO

OK, I have a K7T Turbo2, and its pretty stable but I have a big problem. Every couple of days (Actually it happened 3 times today for some reason), it switches my Secondary IDE channel from DMA to PIO Mode 4. When I try to install games under PIO mode, the installer freezes randomly and my system becomes unstable. Also when I try to burn CDRs and DVDRs, my system gets slow and unstable under PIO mode, but it works perfectly under DMA mode. I have to uninstall the secondary ide channel and reboot to get it to switch to DMA, and its a major pain in the butt. Please can someone help me with this, its starting to drive me crazy.

  • Why switch from Gmail to Mac Mail?

I have been happy with Gmail: messages grouped into conversations, a message can be stored in different folders and I've had low spam. I'm thinking about switching to Mac Mail since I understand that it includes the three advantages above and adds the integration benefits with iCal/AB, etc. Leopard adds a feature that allows one to convert data on an email to contacts and calendar events.
    1. What are some other reasons to switch or stay with Gmail?
    2. Is the switch painless?

The Address Book, iCal and Mail do share common frameworks under both Mac OS X 10.4.x and Mac OS X 10.5, though which information is shared, exchanged or synchronized. Each of these are distinctly different mechanisms. Mail and the Address Book share and exchange information according the settings in Mail, and to processes you elect to execute, such as adding an inbound sender to your Address Book from Mail using the Add to Address Book option. Mail structures, contacts in your Address Book and events and tasks in iCal can be synchronized with .Mac or other applications, devices or servers.
But, electronic mail content can only be effectively synchronized using IMAP mailbox configurations. Before the Gmail IMAP option surfaced a couple of weeks ago, .Mac would have been a better choice because of its IMAP option. Now that Google is beginning to offer the option, there are few if any significant differences between them as electronic mail providers.
For various reasons, I maintain electronic mail accounts on our company server running under Mac OS X Server, .Mac, AOL, Gmail, MSN and Yahoo. Only the in-house, .Mac, AOL and now converted Gmail accounts—which are all configured as IMAP accounts—can be synchronized: MSN and Yahoo offer no such option, and cannot be.

  • Assistance with poor speeds since switching from P...

    Hi all,
New BT customer looking for some help.
I was previously with Plusnet, and receiving 37mbit download, and a lowly 2mbit upload.
I recently switched to Infinity 2 (6th June), and have allowed for the initial settling in period.
It was quoted to me by the lady in sales at the time:
    Roxy: 49.4Mb download
    Roxy: 10.9Mb upload Now
Roxy: As long as it states that and showns Infinity, the above confirmed speed will be the speed you get with this package
Having run the BT speed test, following the instructions implicitly I am actually getting:-
    30Mb download
    5.6Mb upload
I get similar speeds from other independant speed test sites.
It's clear to me something is wrong, either my IP profile is capped in the region of 30Mb or this is all my line can accept once my upload speed is increased, can someone investigate this please as the 49.4 originally quoted is clearly not being received? Evidently from previous fibre usage with a different supplier my line is capable of at least 37Mb download and I presumed that Inifinty 2 would push this further, which is the reason I switched.
    Many thanks for any assistance,
    Chris.

  • Switching from Comcast - Need some Assistance

I have been a Comcast subscriber for many years now, but have heard that FiOS is supposed to be better. However, there are a few things that make me somewhat ambivalent about switching. First off, I've had Comcast for years, and have had a few issues with them, but not THAT many. So I don't know if it'd be worth it to change, since a new provider might not be as good. But also, I noticed that carriage of local channels is different on FiOS than it would be on cable, since I would assume it would be the same throughout the entire market. For instance, in the Boston area, some communities near the Rhode Island border receive Providence channels as well as Boston on cable, but not on FiOS. I've also heard that FiOS' On Demand selections are rather different. I know there's tons of movies on demand, but what about TV shows, and local events? I also saw a post here from someone who doesn't get local weather on their system. So I've heard that in a way, FiOS is more like satellite than it is like cable.
Anyway, I'm sure that many of you here who now have FiOS TV have switched from cable, and let me ask you this: Have any of you ever considered switching back? Why, or why not?

    fair question.
I switched from comcast to verizon at the end of last year.
my sole reason for switching was due to savings of $40/month.  To me, the quality, speed, and service appears to be the same (or hardly noticeable to make a significant difference).
the main advantage for switching to FIOS is money.  Some small advantages FIOS has over Comcast is some of their local networks on-demand content.  I believe that Comcast only provides CBS while Verizon offers ABC, NBC, and CBS (neither carry Fox on-demand).
the main disadvantage to me is that you do NOT need a set-top box to get all of the channels with comcast.  a simple splitter will suffice.  for FIOS, you need to rent the box for each tv or else you will not get a picture.  another disadvantage is that the free movies on Comcast are far more vast and far better than Verizon.  However, Verizon is aware of this and are slowly adding more content throughout this year.
As for customer serivce, it's hit or miss with both.  You'll read many horror stories and happy stories from both sides, so to me, that's almost a risk or expectation with any paid service.
that being said, FIOS has made considerable advancements in technology in their internet and cable service over the past few years while keeping the costs to the consumers down.  comcast, on the other hand, has not made any significant technological advances (at least none that I know of, although they do claim to double your internet speed every year, but so does everyone else).
thus, even though I must rent a box for each of my 6 tvs, I'm still saving $40/month, but we'll see what happens when the 1-year promotion ends this december.
You've got to be very careful if you don't know where you're going, because you might not get there. --Yogi Berra
