Reberb 15" PB G4 1.67 or 15" MBP 1.83?

Iam thinking about purchasing a referbished 15" PowerBook for $1,399 (Gov Discount). But Iam concerned that I will be missing out on a hudge speed increase and possibly a waste of good hard earned cash if I don't spend a little extra now to get the 15" MacBookPro for $1,839 (Gov. Discount).
Currently I have a 20" iMacG5(iSight)Rev C, and a 20" iMac G5 Rev A, and love everything about both of them.
The laptop will be mainly used when I travel (not often), or the ocassional lazy time in my recliner.
Are the G4 Powermac's a lot slower than the current iMac I have now.
PLEASE HELP ME DECIDE......THANKS

OK… here's little bit more information regarding the speed difference. I though I would see what the difference in Java (version 5 Release 4) performance playing a Yahoo game (Cubis) between my 1.66GHz Intel vs my 1.25GHz PPC… and it wasn't even close. The PPC was busting a gut at every level load at a herniating 100% whereas the Intel was going more than twice as fast and wasn't even breaking a sweat (one core getting to 80-90% and the other not even breaking 40% for a mere fraction of the time).
Yes I'm comparing an older PowerBook though I think a 1.83GHz Intel is a fair comparison to a 1.67GHz PPC and the differences should be reasonably similar. Also, the desktop/laptop comparison is mute given the mini's components vary little to that of a laptop.
If you are going to compare the two with each at their best then there's no doubt the Intel is streets ahead… and I've got almost the bottom end of the scale with a 1.66GHz and not a 1.83/2/2.16GHz Core Duo. Don't get me wrong, I love my PowerBook but the performance difference, granted with Univeral binaries, just can't be ignored. One thing though, if Rosetta is going to be a big part of your daily usage then I would strongly suggest more RAM than what you would otherwise need with a PPC.
On a purely performance basis there's no way I could recommend going PPC from this point on. There is however other criteria where a PPC is a better choice. As of around August/September 2006 I doubt I would recommend PPC at all.

  • System overload . Just right processor clips. Left one almost at zero.

Sorry, if this has been asked before, but I did not manage to find a way to look for thread titles and there´s thousands of posts containing my search items!
Here´s my problem: I get the System overload message: "Audio engine was not able to process all required data in time (-10011)", which is in my case understandable, cause I´m running very many EXS an reberbs.
    But:
    1. My system performance shows, that the right processor is doing allmost all work, while the left processor is just at 10 %.
    Why is this?
I remember a trick in Logic 5, where U could ballance the processor-work by using an I/O-plugin an bypass this. This way some of the work was handled by the other processor. Are there any similar tricks in Logic 7?
    2. I´m working almost without audio tracks and with many EXS-plugins.
Even though I set everything in a way, that my hard-disc should have a lot of work (Buffer Size 1024, fast disc, etc...) the system performance shows zero activity, but the Audio clips.
    What´s wrong?
    Thanks for your help!

  • Alarming buzzing from external Hd during playback

Hi- there's no sign of clipping when I play my project, and input levels are well down. Yet at certain points in the piece the external HD from which I'm working buzzed alarmingly.
Could the reason be 1) because it's on the external HD ?
    2) Because I'e got 3 instances of Space Designer loaded:- a) with 5 EXS instruments b) with piano + 5 Jam Pack wind instruments c) with Audio (VoiceOver)
I sent all instruments using the same reverb to the same Bus.
Could I simply send all SD instruments to the same Bus even though they use different reverb settings to cut down the load ?
    Any bright ideas wuldbe appreciated.
    Thanks, SeaDream

Perhaps you can explain more clearly where the buzzing is. Is it on an audio track, (when you solo/mute-you hear/don't hear buzz). Is it physically coming from the hard drive?.
Does it only become apparent when you use Space designer/ or a certain patch in SP? If you just send one instrument to SP do you hear it.. If you overdrive the bus send you can get distortion.
Solo each EXS instrument - is it clean? I have noticed that if I set the volume of the EXS instrument up all the way to get decent level - there is distortion on some samples coming out. Better to set EXS volume to 70% and then use a 'gain' plug-in after to make up for volume.
I've also found that one of the EXS pianos has some distortion in the upper registers if you are playing several sustained notes.. Not always apparent. This distortion appears to be in the recording of the sample or the fact that I am holding a six note chord out in a high register. I never noticed it before until I was working on this one particular song.
It is possible to get a ground hum when using external drives, but you hear that all the time.. You are talking about an 'alarming buzz"
I'd try different reberbs and sends, keep experimenting until you isolate the cause.. If you replace Space Designer with platinum reverb is there still the buzz? If not you're starting to trace it down.
    Good luck

Interestingly, after a very positive experience by adding the open DNS numbers 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220, I found today that every time I tried to open Safari it knocked me offline. So I've now resorted back to the number originally assigned to me.
    What's going on with Safari?

    Jake,
One Verizon DSL account; one Westell 6100 modem
Check with Verizon and find out what the max download / upload speeds should be.
If this is the plan you purchased: http://www22.verizon.com/residential/highspeedinternet/
*"And we’re constantly looking for ways to make our DSL faster—recently upgrading our Starter plan to 1 Mbps* download and our Turbo plan to 7.1 Mbps."*
1 Mbps download / 7.1 Mbps is hardly high speed.
You can check your upload/download speeds here. http://www.speedtest.net/
To realize faster download and uploads speeds you would need to upgrade your service.
This is more then just a DNS issue.

  • Stuck: Need Disk repair but DVD drive dead and only have USB 1

[1 Ghz flat-panel iMac with USB 1 ports (no USB 2) and also Firewire 400]
I noticed a strange discrepancy (small but concerning) between the size of a folder on hard drive (folder of all mp3's with no subfolders) and the backup of the same folder on a mounted thumb drive.
(The size difference was not due to any invisible .DS_Store files and both folders are displayed in List view format.)
    Disk Utility reports three things:
    1. Incorrect number of thread records
    2. Volume Bit Map needs minor repair
    3. Checking volume information.
Volume free block count",0)   [I might have mangled this line]
(It should be 13438611 instead of 13437937)
Here is the GOOD (but these are useless as explained under the "Bad"):
    - I have a Tiger 10.4 boot DVD for a repair ==>but see below
    - I also have a Disk Warrior disk (never used)
    Here is the BAD:
    - My built-in optical drive [Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105] is -- I now discover - defunct and DEAD - it does not run the Tiger Boot DVD (in pristine shape).
    - I bought an external SuperDrive (unopened) but I believe no boot from USB 1 is possible in PowerPC so a SuperDrive with USB 1 is useless.
    Questions:
1.) Is there any way to boot from some external source (optical drive is DEAD) to run Disk Utility and/or Disk Warrior? -- I see none in this case! (gulp).
2.) More importantly (and this is my fundamental concern): Do the three Disk Utility hard drive issues constitute any direct threat to the integrity of my files?
I have almost everything backed up to duplicate thumb drives over these many months as standard practice.
Are these Disk Utility errors fully isolated to hard drive directory-keeping...or do these directory damage errors pose the possibility of mangling or harming my files or their metadata (filesize, etc.).
Put another way, when files are backed-up from a hard drive under the Disk Utility reports above, do they remain unharmed and undamaged by the situations reported by Disk Utility?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Jeff and Michael,
Thank you both for your generous and thoughtful input.
Michael: As I slept on it overnight, the exact same idea occurred to me of trying a Target Mode to the iMac from my Lion MacbookPro (I have it but stupidly have yet to use it much!).
I did buy a Firewire 800 (MBP) to Firewire 400 (iMac) adapter cable a few months ago!
CONCERN: Would there be potential compatibility issues or risks in running Lion 10.7's Disk Utility against the hard drive of the old OSX 10.4 iMac in Target Disk Mode?
==> Assuming an "it's ok" answer to the Target Disk question, would the majority of users agree that the Target Disk Mode would be more prudent than running:
fsck -fy   in Single User Mode
I have never done fsck -fy before especially because I was under the impression there were issues with Journaled drived but from what I have read today...it looks ok to do)
Jeff: Can't thank you enough for the reference to the OTW DVD drive. I might first invest $10 in one of those DVD lens cleaner disks that I've read about. It's probably not the issue or else why would the drive read commercial Music cds perfectly well!

  • Can not see historical data in Time Machine backup

    Hi folks
    First my setup:
       MBP Late2012
       Samsung Evo 840 SSD
external USB 3.0 1TB as TimeMachine HD
       Mac OS X Mavericks
    Now my problem.
After updating to Mavericks I've made a full backup with Time Machine.
Then I swapped the former 500TB HDD to the Samsung Evo 840 500TB.
A clean setup of Mavericks follows.
After that I restored the Backup from Time Machine.
    Everything ok. Til now.
Because everthing works fine in the past, I did not control the Time Machine.
Today I wanna restore a File from my "Pictures" folder.
    So I opened Time Machine.
    Oops.
There I can only see the latest run.
Also in the timeline on the right side the only entries are TODAY and NOW.
I can not scroll into the past.
All windows behind the current window have a black titlebar.
In Mountain lion the titlebars are grey if there is data available
and the title contains the date of the backup.
    What is the problem?
    Is there a bug?
    Did I something wrong?
    Thanx in adv.

  • Lock-ups on 7day old MBP

Ive been having issues since day 1 with my 2.4ghz C2D 17"MBP with highres screen...
Ive used fan-control software to put my fans up to there max speed with the lowest temp thresholds, but, im still having problems.
Under Windows XP (bootcamp) when I play Eve:Online for more than 10mins it will lock the laptop up solid, forcing me to hold down the power button to the the machine to shut down.
Having googled, it appears to be a heat related problem and I could buy something like a Coolermaster NotePalW1 to help keep it cool. Anyone got any other suggestions of things i can try to see if its a hardware or software problem?

  • MBP 15'' 2011 battery lasts only 3 hours!

    Hi
I bought MBP 2011 15 inch last week and received it on Monday.
    My configs are
    Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro8,2
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:          2.2 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          6 MB
      Memory:          4 GB
and I also upgraded to high resolution.
So far, I'm pretty much enjoying my new MBP
But I have one main concern with my new laptop's battery time.
The battry time is really really short!
When I first turned it on, it took 3 hours to drain the battery. (starting from 98% or so)
And I did calibration thing so that the battery runs more "efficiently"
Of course, I didn't expect that calibration would make the battery last longer, but no matter what,
I only get 3 hours of battery life and I'm not even doing something that would drain my battery fast.
I just do simple web surfing and word documenting on about 30-40% brightness (or even lower sometimes)
And I get only 3 hours of bettery time.
So is this because my MBP has four i7 cores or or what?
Previous MBP 15'' models seem to last at least around 5 hrs doing exactly same thing.
And considering that I have been using my MBP only for 5 days or so, I'm worried that the battery life will become even less!
    Maybe like 2 hrs?
Is this a particular issue with my laptop, that I can return and exchange to new model or get fixed without fees?
Or is it just built this way that all the MBP 2011 15'' models have this kind of short battery life?

OMG turning off the Bluetooth just gave me like extra 3 hours of battey time! (6 hrs total)
I didn't even know it was turned on in the first place because I never touched it.
I guess bluetooth is on as a default setting.
Thank you so much for advice.
I feel so stupid, but please be understanding since it's actually my first MacBook.
But I'm really glad to find out that I was wasting battery with bluetooth on, and now I can get better battery time.
    Thanks once again!

  • Voice Memos (iPhone app) doesn't sync to iTunes

"Include voice memos" is checked in iTunes but they don't sync, no playlist is made.  The files are too large to email. Is there another way to make this happen?  I've only just begun using the application in the past few days.  Other notes: I have a new MBP (one week old) which replaced a previous MBP to which the iPhone was a long-time pal.  Since I linked the iPhone to my new MBP, each time they sync, the same 17 podcasts (1 each from 17 of the 26 to which I'm subscribed) and the same 92 songs (out of the 2000+ in playlists chosen to sync) are transferred to the iPhone.  Another issue probably...???  Thanks in advance!

  • Can not add mp3 to library

I just downloaded an mp3 song from Marié Digby's free area, and I couldn't for the life of me get it to import or add to my itunes library. I have played the track via VLC and it doesn't seem to have anything wrong with it. I added my entire Downloads folder to try and get it to show up. I wish I had an error I could give, simply iTunes 11 on my MBP running ML 10.8.2.

I don't have a Recently Added playlist.  However, I discovered that the file I had named Eating Healthy was given the name You Can Enjoy Eating Healthy when it copied to iTunes.  I'm guessing iTunes pulled the full name of the piece from the internet.  Upshot--the mp3 did transfer to iTunes on all 3 tries, but I was looking in my alphabetized list under E, not Y, so I didn't see it there.  Thanks for your help.

  • Mid 2010 15" i5 Battery Calibration Questions

    Hi, I have a mid 2010 15" MacBook Pro 2.4GHz i5.
Question 1: I didn't calibrate my battery when I first got my MacBook Pro (it didn't say in the manual that I had to). I've had it for about a month and am doing a calibration today, is that okay? I hope I haven't damaged my battery? The calibration is only to help the battery meter provide an accurate reading of how much life it has remaining, right?
Question 2: After reading Apple's calibration guide, I decided to set the MacBook Pro to never go to sleep (in Energy Saver System Preference) and leave it on overnight so it would run out of power and go to sleep, then I'd leave it in that state for at least 5 hours before charging it. When I woke up, the light on the front wasn't illuminated. It usually pulsates when in Sleep. Expectedly, it wouldn't wake when pressing buttons on the keyboard. So, what's happened? Is this Safe Sleep? I didn't see any "Your Mac is on reserve battery and will shut down" dialogues or anything similar, as I was asleep! I've left it in this state while I'm at work and will charge it this afternoon. Was my described method okay for calibration or should I have done something different?
Question 3: Does it matter how quickly you drain your battery when doing a calibration? i.e is it okay to drain it quickly (by running HD video, Photo Booth with effects etc) or slowly (by leaving it idle or running light apps)?
    Thanks.

    Fresh J:
A1. You're fine calibrating the battery now. You might have gotten more accurate readings during the first month if you'd done it sooner, but no harm has been done.
A2. Your machine has NOT shut down; it has done exactly what it was supposed to do. When the power became critically low, it first wrote the contents of RAM to the hard drive, then went to sleep. When the battery was completely drained some time later, the MBP went into hibernation and the slepp light stopped pulsing and turned off. In that state the machine was using no power at all, but the contents of your RAM were still saved. Once the AC adapter was connected, a press of the power button would cause those contents to be reloaded, and the machine would pick up again exactly where you left off. It is not necessary to wait for the battery to be fully charged before using the machine on AC power, but do leave the AC adapter connected for at least two hours after the battery is fully charged. Nothing that you say you've done was wrong, and nothing that you say has happened was wrong.
A3. No, it does not matter.

  • Mid 2009 13.3" Macbook Pro random freezing issue

    Hi all,
I had a 2009 13.3" Unibody Macbook and last week purchased a 13.3" Macbook Pro. I had installed 4GB of RAM in the MB myself, and it had worked fine for the month I owned it.
I backed up my MB with an external USB hard drive using Time machine, restored from this backup on my MBP and moved the 4GB RAM over.
When using the MBP I get random freezes lasting between 1 and 3 seconds, occuring every 5 to 30 minutes.
Could someone please advise a good way to diagnose this problem further? I am guessing it is not the RAM as it worked fine whilst in the MB.

    I have an update!
I made an appointment with a local Apple Genius Bar and talked to a technian. He said it was neither the RAM nor the Hard Drive at fault.
His only thoughts were that a software issue was the root cause. I have been doing some serious investigating this morning and figured it out. Viewing system.log in Console shows:
SMS::infiniteIntTimerEventHandler ERROR: we have infinite interrupts, disabling
At exactly 5 minute intervals. These correlate with the freezes (to the second).
SMS refers to the Apple Sudden Motion Sensor. I disabled this by doing "sudo pmset -a sms 0" in Terminal, rebooted and everything is fine.
I have no idea why the SMS thinks the Macbook is falling every 5 minutes, but when it occures the hard drive heads are locked down to prevent damage, which is a perfect reason as to why iTunes would crash but Spotify (streaming internet music) does not.
    Problem solved!
    Edit:
In reply to some questions posted by other members (thank you by the way).
I did install EFI 1.7 update. I did not use the Migration assistance. At some point I will do a fresh install then pick and choose parts from a backup rather than using a full Time Machine Restore. This could still have been the root cause of the issue, but it is hard to tell.
    Thanks guys!

  • Mid '09 MBP bootup issue - flashing folder; possibly a fried drive?

    Hi All,
This is my first post here. Today my 14 month old MBP 15-incher froze in the middle of some casual browsing/iTunes listening and decided to not respond to any mouse or keyboard input. I gave it some time to figure itself out and then after about 5 minutes of nothing, decided to force a shutdown by cutting power (10 second power button hold). Then upon my next boot the computer gives the chime, shows the grey screen (no  logo), does nothing for ca. a minute and a half and then presents me with the glorious flashing questionmark-folder-whatever logo. Just great.
I reset the PRAM (option + command + p + r), tried Safe Booting (shift + boot), tried forcing the laptop to boot into the default os x drive/partition (x + boot), tried booting with GUI boot location selector (option + boot) and, when all mentioned practices failed, inserted a retail copy of snow leopard and booted the machine to the ODD.
Disk Utility confirmed my fears: the main HD has no partitions and the "First Aid" tab can't verify or repair the disk.
Help me out here, guys. Is my drive dead (and all my data gone)? Is this a "directory collapse"-style issue? I had one of those babies a month ago on an '07 white MacBook... a new HDD and two hours of data restoration work for $150 at a local Mac-centric repair shop fixed that issue. But this seems a little more serious.
I was two days away from activating a central Time Machine backup to the home-network-attached 2TB HDD, for both Mac laptops in the household. I was also two days away from getting a Crashplan.com family package (yes, I wanted double backup). Why 2 days from now? Because my Carbon Copy Cloned backup HD (a WD elements 1TB) died a week ago. As in, "started-puffing-out-smoke" died.
    Perfect timing.
    Ideas? Please?
    <Edited by Host>

I also suspect your internal HD has crashed. You can run Apple Hardware Test and then Google any error codes however I believe it's probably gone.
Without any backup yes your data is probably gone, there are data recovery services however they are extremely expensive.
If you purchased AppleCare you can take it an AASP for repair however they probably cannot do a thing about your data. If you are not covered by AppleCare of course the expense will be your however look at this as an opportunity to upgrade the internal HD to something with more storage or is faster.
Once you have the new HD installed you will need the original Snow Leopard Install Disks (or possibly your retail copy of SL) to format the new HD and re-install SL and the iLife applications.

    Good luck,
    Roger
