Reboot after computer freezes

I like to play a game called Civilization, but recently it has been freezing up my computer when I try to  load it.   I have it stored from an external hard drive so that it does not not take up space on my computer's hard drive.  When it does freeze up, the only way I can get out of the program is to press the power button for a couple of seconds to turn off the computer.  I assume that this is not the most optimal way to do this.  I have tried to reboot using key strokes with out success.  Any other solutions would be helpful.

BOTH...when I try to hover over the time, the color wheel of death appears.  AND when I go into system prefs, the clock tab selections have been deselected.  When I try to select "show date and time in menu bar" again, it stalls for a bit, and then reverts to its deselected state.  I've tried rkaufmann87's fix, and it works for just a bit, then back to whacky.  Any ideas?

  • Flash Builder 4.5 blank mxml after computer freezes

Hi !! I have a very strange problem, last night using Flash Builder 4.5 in the moment i was saving the project my computer froze and i rebooted my computer and the Main.mxml file is filled now with blank spaces. The properties says it is 230Kb but opening it in the text editor is just blabk spaces, trying to open in flash builder but ir hangs and when i open the project it gives me "Content is not allowed in prolog." Any ideas ?? Thank you very much !!

Hi Anirudh !! thanks for the response. I have opened the mxml file in wordpad and in notepad, just blank spaces, 230kb of blank spaces, i think it has to do with saving (flash builder automatically builds the project on save) and freezing just the instant after i saved. I really dont think there is a solution, will have to redo it, thank you very much, hope this does not happen to anyone else, it is very frustating and depressing to lose a project. Best wishes !!

  • Anyway to salvage a render after computer freeze?

I am just going to assume that there's nothing one can do in this instance...but just in case, thought I'd ask: is there any way to salvage what has been rendered if one's computer freezes mid-render?  I have a project which takes about 8 hours to render.  6 hours into my render, my entire macbook froze and the system restarted itself.  Is there any way to pick up from where I left off with the render?
    Thanks

Well ... there's nothing like a combination of hubris and lack of knowledge to get you into trouble ...
Snow Leopard does not, and never had, a Recovery Partition.  Lion was the first version of OS X that ever had a recovery partition.
You also seem to know just enough about UNIX to get yourself into trouble.   "rm -rf /" completely erases your hard drive, it does not "Reboot the hard drive completely clean and back to Factory Settings" as you seem to think it would.
At this point you have to re-install OS X  from scratch.  If you have the grey recovery disk(s) that came with your MacBook, use them.  If you don't have them then you need to purchase Snow Leopard.  You may or may not then be able to migrate your apps from your other MacBook "(Same Model, Everything)".
There is another option that may or may not work.  If you really do have an identical MacBook, you may be able to start up the dead MacBook in Target Disk Mode, connect it to your running MacBook and clone the running MacBook's hard drive to your dead MacBook.  Repeat ... this may or may not work!  You will have to try it to see, and I suspect you will need to repartition and reformat the dead MacBook's hard drive first since you destroyed it from the Terminal.

  • After computer freezer, the computer fails to reboot

    Hey,
I was LANing with a friend playing WCIII FT and the game froze. Both of us turned our computers off. He was using a MBP and his computer rebooted immediately. When I tried to reboot my mac book, the screen with the apple logo an the spinning circle comes up and the dot moves around the circle indefinitely. I have left it on for up to 10 minutes but nothing happens. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get my computer to boot up. Thanks
    Pat

The game most likely froze because something happened to your machine. From the sound if it, a hardware failure, but maybe not.
Insert the Leopard DVD and reboot holding down the "C" key.
Once the DVD boots, after the language screen, in the menu, top left, under Utilities, run Disk Utility and repair HD and permissions.
If that works, reboot and see what happens.

  • My mac air want shut down, had to force shut after computer freezing in itunes, box with saving itunes library has been up for 30 mins

I have had a day of it. wanted to join my new pc computer to my itune account. one problem to many devices on my account and two are ones that got broken and couldn't be deauthrise. sooo i deauthrised all computers. my mac air was sitting beside me so i thought i will authrise it again, was that a mistake as my computer became very slow when i went into itunes. it froze and not in the spinning disc way, in the was doing nothing way. held power button in, after waiting 10 mins and it went to gray screen with itune boxs saying "saving itunes library". its been doing this over 30 mins now and will not shut down or anything esle because when i try power button again it says i have not logged out of itune and should do this before it can shut down. not happy!!!! this is after 2 hours prior apple tried very hard sale to get me to buy there tech support for £100. I have never had a problem before, doesn't that seem strange?

Exactly what did you do to run Disk Utility and exactly what happened up to the freeze?
I called some place to ask for advice and they said it could be my logic board???
That's an easy answer to give but not necessarily the correct one.
If you have the system restore disc that came with your Mac, boot with that disc in the Mac while holding down the "D" key. That will invoke hardware diagnostics. Run those several times to investigate the possibility that your Mac has a hardware flaw.

I use an external component - USB Microsoft Wireless Mouse & Keyboard 2000.
I have, as far as software goes...
    Windows 7 64-bit SP1
Adobe Creative Suite 5, student version or what have you.
         - I do have several plugins installed as well for After Effects only.
    Autodesk 3ds Max 2012
-I have several maxscripts as well as a couple plugins for 3ds Max.
    UDK 2-2012 & 3-2012
    NVIDIA PhysX Lab 1.1

    UnCodeX
    Quicktime
    AVG Free
    Malwarebytes
    7-Zip
    Java
    Sculptris
As for anything else giving me issues I haven't noticed anything besides a previous Graphics Card wasn't supported very well at all with 3ds Max, it would freeze while using the material editor which was fixed with replacing a GTX550 ti with a more compatible GTX480. Thought maybe the upgrade would also solve the fact that almost everytime I go to start up and/or use After Effects or Premiere Pro CS5 my whole system freezes. Whether or not I'm doing anything, it occasionally happened during "Scrubbing" the timeline, but also during the splash load up screen. Would take the time to wait for several minutes but nothing would change. Hard reboot was needed. After countless hours of searching online I stumbled upon what is called an "Unlock" for Premiere Pro/After Effects to allow accelerated GPU and CUDA cores. Simple procedure, seems as if things go faster... When it is working. But still, I encounter freezes on my entire system. It isn't a crash back to Windows or anytihng. Just a complete freeze on the entire system. I have not extensively used other Adobe programs besides Photoshop quite briefly just so I could open menus and force a freeze within 5 minutes and noticed nothing wrong. Which in AE & PP just running through any of the menu windows can quickly cause a sudden freeze.
note* I have alternated shutting off and turning on OpenGL as well as multiprocessing. Doesn't matter, it really doesn't seem to change much of anything.
Alas, I am absolutely sure, after checking and re-checking 80+ hours over the past 2 weeks that yes, everything is updated as far as each individual program, software or hardware will allow me to update them. I have reinstalled Windows as well as each program up to 3 times, and 1 system (restore?) I had Windows dump everything, started from scratch, backed up nothing. To reinstall everything from scratch, while not installed several "Utilities" or software components from stuff like the Motherboard and its XFAST USB/LAN or whatever, thinking maybe it was cluttering up anything.
Please, if anyone has any ideas upon this and could give me advice, whether you notice any other incompatibilities or anything. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
note* I do not have a wired Keyboard or mouse to disable the USB plugin and attempt that route.. at least not yet, its on my list of things to do. Also, I did run Memtest86+ during a boot and it claims that everything there had passed 100%. I am not "overclocking" anything either. I just wanted something I could work smoothly on, that would have decent rendering capabilities. I used to use my girls' laptop which was an HP with 3GB RAM and never experienced crashes or freezes and I could use AE, PPro, 3ds Max with some lag but not any issues. Rendering took forever on it, but I usually avoided that 'cuz it would start heating up pretty fierce. Saved my rendering for school computers where I could. But either way, now I have this expensive piece and it is getting frustrating that I cannot work on it.
note* Also, incase it does help, I have Windows as well as any major components installed onto the C: drive (aka SSD for my system) while all my secondary software, such as Adobe, Autodesk, etc. are all installed directly to my D: drive (or HDD) And everything is set up to go through Windows Firewall as well.

Thanks all. I have just tried a few things, installing them onto the C drive as you all specified as not being one of them. I can understand it, but at the same time i have a classmate who has their software on a seperate drive and it runs smoothe. I'm on my second GPU in 2 weeks, unless I have terrible luck it seems doubtful being that I can run games and a majority of the software no problem. Through further testing around with a corded mouse and keyboard I've noticed the following...
The computer freezes entirely only when I'm performing a "scrubbing" action or using a mouse. Left clicking, scrolling, or moving it around. Otherwise if I do not use the mouse and I make all my actions, such as "scrubbing" in AE via "Page Up & Down" keys, there's no freeze and it preloads the preview no problem.
"Scrubbing" does not load a preview (the green bar doesn't load at all while scrubbing). But, also noticed no matter how smoothe everything is running in 3ds Max as well as PPro, once I start performing a "scrubbing" action with whatever timeline I use, it will definately freeze my whole computer, Windows and all. Hard reboot is neeed.
With having gone through 2 GPU's, done a full memtest via Windows 7 and Memtest86+, there seems to be no issue with my memory or GPU. Like I said, I've run UDK without an issue. Whether the editor or game. The USB doesn't seem like it's the cause, I've used both wireless as well as wired keyboards/mouse. Still freezes, but now only when using a mouse to "Scrub".
Is it possible my motherboard could be incompatible somewhere? I mean, really.. everything is brand new but 2 weeks of troubleshooting.
And I do plan on trying to run my software off the C drive, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't something else, like I said, I've seen and used a computer where it all runs off the D drive and it runs perfectly, actually better on his computer than off the C drive at my schools. So if it is an issue would it lie within the fact that I'm using an Nvidia GPU? Considering my classmate is using a AMD/ATI Radeon or something like that.
Again, to those who replied, your shared knowledge is greatly appreciated, thank you.

computer freezes after installing Yosemite upgrade when you click on something the colored wheel pops up and takes forever to execute

Boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and repair both the disk permissions and the disk.  Reboot normally and check the performance. Any improvement?
Have you run any "cleaning" or "optimizing" apps on your Mac or install any antivirus software?  Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. • Fresh Win7, freeze while rebooting after video driver installation

Yesterday when I opened my laptop it froze while booting when the Win7 logo appears. Rebooted in safemode, all was good, didn't know what to look for exactly.
Today, I decided it was time for a new Win7 reinstall so I did it. Also, did a complete format of my SSD where I keep only my OS.
While it was rebooting after installing the AMD video driver it froze again, in the same spot. Restarted the laptop, chose last known good config and noticed in device manager that one of the video cards had error 43 (Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43))
I tried to install the driver for Intel then, but I got an error saying my laptop does not have the minimum requierments (even for older versions of the driver)
I tried every possible combination of installing, uninstalling, enabling, disabling one of the cards.
When I install the AMD driver, the Intel driver installs itself too.
When I leave AMD graphics  enabled, it freezez at Win7 logo while booting,
When I disable AMD and leave just Intel enabled, then it boots normally, but right after the reboot, device manager shows them both with yellow triangle and "!" with error "This device cannot work properly until you restart your computer. (Code 14)", and of course, if I reboot then it freezes again.
I have already spent 10h on this and couldn't find a way to fix it.

    Hi
Using Advanced boot options  ( F8 at start up )  go into Safe Mode with Command prompt , Once Safe mode loads with command prompt type      rstrui.exe           hit Enter   ....        This will take you into  System Restore ...  Follow the onscreen instructions to Restore your system to the time  before the AMD driver was installed .    You can choose from multiple restore points  if they have been created by you or your system .
                                                      Post me your Findings

  • HELP! After latest update, computer freezes a minute after bootup

I have a G4 that I upgraded from 10.3 - 10.4.6. Everything worked fine for 2 days. Today, I tried to use Photoshop CS3 and it said that Adobe suggests that you use at least 10.4.8, so I checked for updates and it was to download the latest update for java, iTunes and the update to 10.4.9. Well, after installing the update for iTunes (that supports downloading to cell phones) and rebooting, now my computer keeps freezing. I can boot up into safe mode and everything works fine, but as soon as I boot back up normally, the computer freezes up again. Is there a way to uninstall iTunes? I tried installing iTunes version 6 overtop the new one, hoping that would fix the problem, but I don't think it took.
Any ideas? I've tried reinstalling the OS with the archive option, I've tried using a different mouse, but nothing seems to work.

    hi there guys
    hey Colin Moore perfectly told
but you should also try some basic steps first before taking a big step as doing an erase and install is going to be a pain in the neck though it sounds easy
i would suggest you to try booting in safe mode if it does work fine there then issue is most likely with start up items or stuff like that
also need to look more in detail to the situation
when does it freeze up, does it freeze up while on the grey screen and apple or login window or after logging in to your account
if it freezes up after logging in to the account then issue exist within user account most likely then best to try safe mode if safe mode does not work now you will need to think big coz the next step is doing an archive and install provided disk utility does not have an error if there is an error message then follow what ever Colin Moore has advised

  • Resume VIDEO downloads after computer disconnect - reboot.

I have Firefox VER 31, OS WINXP 32 Bit, SP2. How do I "Resume VIDEO downloads" after computer disconnects from the internet or freezes and I reboot the computer?

You may not be able to resume downloads if the connection is lost forcefully.
In such a case you would have to backup the .part file and the final file without the .part before starting Firefox.
Try these steps to resume an unfinished download when you still have the .part file.
    # Move the old .part partial download and the final file without the .part that has size 0 to another location.
    # Start a new download and pause it, don't close Firefox.
    # Copy the two files (.part and 0 byte final) that you moved above back to the download location to replace the new files that were created.
    # Resume the download in Firefox.
You can consider to use an external download manager if you encounter such issues often.

  • Logic asks for my serial number every time I reboot the computer.  Anyone know what gives?  I restored the program after a hard drive crash and now I need to enter the serial number every time.  Why doesn't it remember the code?

After a computer crash I had to reinstall the whole system using Migration Assistant.  The User ID is NOT the same as the original computer.  And now every time I reboot the computer and load Logic the program asks me to enter my Serial Number with a "Licensing" window. Why can't the copy protection see that I have already done this?  Am I missing some Pref file, or is it in the wrong location?  The program works fine once I enter in the number and insert my Logic XSKey (from an older update).  Thanks.

    Hi!
Do you run automap 4.8/4.9? If so, then the chance is that automap is the culprit for slow undos/redos on LPX 10.1. Delete the Novation controller in the LPX controller surfaces. You find it under preferences/controller surfaces. If that is the solution for you, then uninstall automap. You find the uninstaller under applications-automap.
    Good luck!

  • Computer freezes for a few minutes after minimizing/closing Photoshop/InDesign

    Hello,
So I've had this problem since I got the computer, but it has gotten much worse recently. After I work in photoshop and indesign for a few hours, I minimize both programs and the computer freezes for a good 4 or 5 minutes, even my winamp music player starts skipping. I'm thinking its the RAM that needs time to dump out the data and its doing it very slow.
    I have:
    Q8200 2.33 ghz overclocked at 2.51
    8BG of RAM
    ATI EAH4850 512MB
I'm thinking it might the overclocking or the Not so high quality of RAM sticks. please let me know of any other suggestions.
    Thank you

Thank you for the response. I disabled the overclocking and unchecked Export Clipboard. It seems to be a bit faster, but I haven't tried it extensively yet. I'm running XP x64, if that makes any difference.

If your computer doesn't see the phone when you plug it in, you may have to take it to an Apple Store.

thought that it was possible to have the same iTunes library on any machine that was authorised, a kind of cloud-iTunes I guess.
That would convenient, but sadly it is not the case. Sorry!
Either way your welcome and best of luck!

  • I attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded, now computer freezes after trying to load everything.  possible to reverse this?  options?  restore hd from time machine?  pls help!!!

long story short...i attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded to my desktop and now my computer freezes up after trying to load everything, and i'm not able to just drag the photos into the folder.  is it possible to reverse this?  what are my options?  restore hd from time machine?
a further question to restoring my hd from a previous backup on time machine...it says it will erase the hd.  does it actually erase everything or does it just erase anything that may have been added or downloaded since that backup?  this is confusing to me.
another problem which is part of the original problem is it seems that when i connect my iphone to my computer and iphoto uploads my pics...it doesn't just upload new ones, it duplicates and uploads every picture again...which is why i have 45,000 pics...they are 40,000 duplicates!  what's up with that?
I have a macbook pro, and recently updated the os to Yosemite.  the iphoto app is out of date, but i'll worry about that once i can figure out how to get all those pics off the desktop.  also, i recently purchased and installed 8g of new ram, but that hasn't seemed to help.
    any advice would be appreciated!
    thanks!!

    thanks for replying.
the booting and walking away and then attempting to browse and clean method is what i've been trying to do.  it won't let me drag and drop and just freezes up and goes to sleep after 2 minutes.  it's a never ending battle with very few results. which is why i questioned the method of just restoring the hd from a time machine backup.
do you think restoring the hd from time machine will resolve the issue with all pics on the desktop?  and everything will be as it was from the date i restore it from?  sorry, as you can tell, i'm not overly computer savvy.
i have a really old desktop mac...i can try connecting the two...how does one boot a mac in 'target mode'?
as for the iphoto cleaning and organizing issue...that is what i was trying to accomplish with importing them to a folder.  was going to browse and clean from there...but somehow imported to desktop which is what's complicating everything.  once i get them off the desktop i can work on the iphoto issue...which as i mentioned...i didn't take 45,000 pics...i've just taken about 4,500 over the last few years, and they are being duplicated in iphoto.  this was my attempt to clean it out entirely and start over.  it will basically be a lot of deleting.
one problem, seems to lead me to more...which is just my luck.  :-)
    thanks again, for your help.
