Reboot from a previous install pending

K...
I was having issues with owa in general. Have Exchange 2007 SP1 running on Server 2008. I uninstalled the client access portion and when I go to reinstall, i continually get "Error. A reboot from a previous installation is pending. Please restart the system and rerun setup. I check in the registry to see if there was something in "FileRenameOperations" and nothing. Rebooted just for the hell of it and still getting the same error. I have no idea what is going on. I am currently using this server as the front end and the back end has all the mailboxes on it. Reinstalling IIS7 is not an option considering it is running SCCM 2007 which the boss would go ape if we lost it just because of this error. Anyone out there have any suggestions?

Hi There,
(for those with similar issues)
There seems to be another orphan value you could check. See:

  • Exchange management tools error "reboot from a previous installation pending"

I am trying to install the Exchange 2010 Management Tools onto a client. We have Exchange 2010 running already elsewhere, but have been doing RDP to the server in order to add mailboxes, etc., need to have more administrators on their own Windows 7 client
    computers doing remote management.
Windows 7 Enterprise (64bit) client computer in same domain as Exchange servers, UAC disabled, logged in as a domain administrator. Fresh restart. No updates pending. Noticed article
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc164360(v=exchg.80).aspx "A Restart from a Previous Installation is Pending" and numerous posts that indicated I should
clear "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\UpdateExeVolatile" or clear "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations" - but neither of these keys
    exist on my computer!
Downloaded and unzipped Exchange2010-SP3-x64.exe to C:\Temp
    Ran C:\Temp\setup.exe
Checked off the options:  a) Error Reporting - Yes (Recommended). b) Custom Exchange Server Installation. c) Select "Management Tools". d) LEAVE UNSELECTED "Automatically install Windows Server roles and features required for Exchange".

Already have reviewed many articles on this topic, none seem to apply to my situation. I am going crazy trying to solve it.

As I've said this workstation meets the requirements for installation of the Management Tools. It is 64bit.
Thanks for the link to the exchangeserverpro.com installation instructions blog. It is something I had already reviewed. There are many comments with problems, so many in fact it is confusing what finally worked for people who ran into snags.
Many also reported the "reboot from a previous installation is pending" problem (that I am getting), but their solution to that problem is not obvious, since, as I originally posted, the Microsoft answer to that error message is contained in "http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc164360(v=exchg.80).aspx"
and the registry keys do not exist on my Win7 client. The other solution in the comments seemed to be to exclude the "Automatically install Windows Server roles and features required for Exchange" during install (but so far Ed and Rajith want
me to include that option). The blog is quite old, and so I hoped the SP3 for Exchange 2010 would have fixed the installer issues identified in the comments on that blog... but apparently not!
DNS is working in our environment. The IP address in the error message points to a network load balancer (NetScaler by Citrix) and does not respond on telnet using port 53... It is our standard DHCP-provided configuration for client DNS. (Does the
Exchange installer for Management Tools have some unique DNS requirements beyond normal name resolution? If so, does the Exchange admin need DNS admin rights?) Just to remove the load balancer from the equation, I changed my Win7 client network adapter settings
to use two real, physical actual Microsoft AD domain controllers to resolve DNS. I performed an IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS. Then re-ran the Exchange 2010 installer. The specific error for DNS has gone away now that I am not using our enterprise's standard load balancer
DNS client configuation. I really need to know why this is an Exchange management tools requirement. Any ideas?
But still no-go on getting the Exchange 2010 Management Tools to install. Here are the latest errors on the Readiness Checks:

  • Waiting for a reboot from a previous install

I'm building a VM to show the boss what we can do with Sharepoint 2010, but can't get it installed. This is a fresh install of 2008R2, all the updates are applied, and it's joined to the domain. All the pre-req's installed fine. I've re-booted and shut down
the server several times, but still get this when I try to isntall:
    Any ideas?

Can you check the following registry keys Bill pointed out in this post.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sharepoint2010setup/thread/bccdb9f1-dd91-4db1-bd19-6bfa658727f5
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\UpdateExeVolatile - if the value of the UpdateExeVolatile registry key is anything other than 0 you will see this message.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRenameOperations - if the PendingFileRenameOperations registry key has any value you will see this message.
    See additional information below:
To remove an orphaned UpdateExeVolatile registry key value
Open a registry editor, such as Regedit.exe or Regedt32.exe.
    Navigate to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\
In the right navigation pane, double-click the UpdateExeVolatile key.
Configure the key with a value of 0
    Close Registry Editor.
To delete the orphaned PendingFileRenameOperations registry key
Open a registry editor, such as Regedit.exe or Regedt32.exe.
    Navigate to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\
In the right navigation pane, right-click the PendingFileRenameOperations key and select
    Delete.
    Close Registry Editor.

  • Exchange 2010 SP3 /PrepareAD failing; "A reboot from a previous installation is pending. Please restart the system..." error

I am attempting to prepare our Exchange 2010 Server (RTM) for an upgrade to SP3.
When attempting to run "setup.com /PrepareAD" to prep the AD schema, the command fails and I receive the following error in the ExchangeSetup log:
    [12/19/2013 21:50:48.0650] [1] Beginning processing Get-OrganizationConfig

    [12/19/2013 21:51:43.0283] [0] End of Setup
I am receiving this error when attempting to run "setup.com /PrepareAD" from either of our two GCs and I get the same error from both GCs, so the issue doesn't appear to be related to the individual servers.
What should I be checking, to clear this error so the AD schema update can be performed?
    Environment
    Exchange:  Exchange Server 2010 RTM
Server: Windows 2008 R2 (fully patched)
Domain and Forest functionality: Windows 2008 R2 native

    One follow up:
If I go into regedit, I see that under HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager  there is an entry from when I recent installed Google Chrome.
    The entry looks like:
    MultiString: PendingFileRenameOperation
    Value Data: \??\C:\Program FIles (x86)\Google\Chrome
Is this "pending rename" what's causing SP3 to refuse to install, because it thinks the OS install state isn't 'clean'?

I had to use ADSI edit to remove the Recovery Storage Group.  But, it has been successfully removed.  My intended resolution is to re-install SP2 on the active node (after moving the cluster making it the passive node).  My question is will
this remove the ERROR 1618 failure on the first node I attempted to upgrade or will I need to manually remove the registry watermark?
    Tony

    Open Registry Editor,
    expand -> HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager
Highlight session manager and locate a key PendingFileRenameOperations.
Check if you have text in that key. if you do, take a backup of that registry and remove that PendingFileRenameOperations and resume Exchange 2007 setup and it should work.
Please revert by replying the outcome!

    Hi,
I purcased my iMac from a previous owner.  His version of Aperature is still on it - registered under his AppleID.  I would like to uninstall it as it is preventing me from using my own version of iPhoto.  How can I do this?  Would it be asvisable to uninstall it and then purchase a new version of Aperature and then convert my iPhoto library to Aperature?  Right now, iPhoto wont launch becuase it wants me to upgrade Aperature, but I don't own a registered copy to my Apple ID, so I can't upgrade it.

    Aperature 3.2.4
    iPhoto 9.5.1
    Thank you!

The previous owner of that machine should have wiped it and install the original OS that shipped with the system leaving the system at the point where the new owner takes over and enters all there own information.
Before you go much further with this machine you should seriously consider backing up any new stuff you have done and wiping it and starting from scratch. If you keep the system like it is you  will be plagued with problems. Even doing OS updates will prove frustrating.
Right now the best you can do is to move the Aperture that is on the system into the trash, log into the App Store using your ID and buying Aperture. That should work but to be honest I have never had to do it so can;t say for sure.
You might want to look at this What to do before selling or giving away your Mac from Apple to read what they recommend.
    good luck
