Reboot in Installation in Solaris 8 (intel)

I am attempting to install Solaris8 on a new machine. Everything goes exactly as described in the
installation guide up until the "Boot Solaris" screen. After the messages:
"Configuring /dev and /devices
Using RPC Bootparams for network configuration information."
the screen blanks and the machine reboots. I was expecting to be prompted to create some disk
partitions. Is there something I need to do to the disk drives first?
Thanks,
Abdul Wahid Khalil

Let me guess, there's a 3com 3c905c (or equivalent) in your
machine, using the new asic that is not supported by the solaris
elxl driver?

  • Solaris 8 Hangs on Warm Reboot w/2 IBM-Branded Intel Pro 100B Cards

    Hello,<P>
I have a kind of a weird problem with an installation of Solaris 8 Intel that I've been playing around with. The system is an old IBM PC 350 with an Evergreen P-200 upgrade chip (it was originally a P-133), 96MB of RAM, and two IBM-branded Intel Pro 100B Ethernet cards. All-in-all it's working ok, but whenever I do a warm reboot (i.e. anything but a full shutdown and power cycle), it hangs almost immediately after it starts to boot the kernel. It gets past the device configuration wizard, and the "select (b) or (i)" part, but hangs right after it clears the screen. If I power it off and back on, it boots normally. I haven't experienced any other issues with the system.<P>
I know people that have the exact same setup (down to the Evergreen upgrade chip) except for the two Ethernet cards, and they don't have this problem.<P>
Has anyone seen behavior like this before? Do you know of any way to rectify it? Any assistance would be appreciated. I can be reached via e-mail at [email protected] Thanks!

Thanks for your quick reply I would definitely suspect hardware (especially as my PC isn't in the prime of its youth), however a MemTest86+ test and a HDAT2 and a Hitachi Drive Fitness Test throw up no errors what so ever (No bad segments, no warnings or anything).
This is just a theory of mine but my pc doesn't seem to hang with SystemRescueCD or Parted Magic (both Linux based), so maybe its just Arch specific, although I will need to do more testing on that front
    Thanks

Are you trying to install Solaris 9 onto a server that is already running Windows XP and to keep Windows XP too?
You'll need to create a partition on which to install Solaris, - search for Solaris Windows Dual Boot on docs.sun.com for more information.

  • Solaris intel (x86) DCA not saving when rebooted.

I'm working with a Panasonic CF-71 toughbook laptop. I have loaded the 2.6 Solaris intel OS and the Xig PCMCIA patch. I have been successful in getting a 3Com 3C589D card to work, but only if I enter into DCA at boot time and delete the PnP ISA PCMCIA device at port 3e2-3e3 and then add a ISA PCMCIA device at port 3e2-3e3. Unfortunately this must be done every time the system is rebooted. Does any one know of a way to do this delete/add using the /etc/system file? Any help is much appreciated.

    Hi
I have download Solaris 9 x86 and Cd1 at boot time gives the same error as you mentioned. I am using my Toshiba Satellite A60. I have check the HDL list and its not listed there. Does it mean I can not install Solaris 9 x86 on this box. When I boot I get the same error which is mentioned above.
For more information I never installed Solaris in past and have no idea which Disk space /partition to be created it talks about in Install Guide.
Can some please clarify and do let me know where am I going wrong and how to fix it.

  • Install Oracle on Solaris Intel

I have purchased Oracle8i Enterprise Edition, Release 2(8.1.6) for Intel Unix(Solaris Intel), and have installed successfully. However, as soon as I shut down and reboot the machine, I can connect to sqlplus
internal, but I cannot log into the database as "sys".
The procedure I did is as following:
Immediately after the installation (message says "installation successful"),
    1. Log in as user "oracle" in the Bourne shell.
    2. At the $ prompt, type "sqlplus internal"
    3. It come out with SQL prompt
    4. SQL> show user ( I typed show user under SQL prompt)
    5. Then it return "sys"
Things seemed to work fine at that point.
But, when I shut down and reboot the machine and logon again, and follow the same steps 1-5 as above, it did not work. When I did the "show user" command at SQL prompt, the user is not "sys", instead it returned
" ". I followed the installation guide and tried to reinstall 5 times.
Every time I had the same problem. I was wondering if this is a bug in
the CD. How can I solve it?
    Thanks,
    Lillian

Installation Guides should be clear enough, if read. Also read Release Notes for additional support/unsupport info.

  • Installation error Solaris 10-u6-ga1

I must be missing something really obvious on the installation of Solaris 10 U6. I've come up against the error message upon manually partitioning, and using UFS. After the install the error is:
Solaris 10 10 software installation partially failed
    Solaris 10 packages partially installed
    SUNWlur
Then at reboot it loops and loops
If I install using ZFS no problem. Unfortunately I have to use UFS for this install.
I pulled down the sol-10-u6-x86-ga1 dvd and installed on an Vmware to see what I'd get. If I manually setup the drive, it fails to with the same error.
Here is my drive layout both sparc server and vmware(x86)
    / = 10 Gb
    swap = 10 Gb
    /etc = 10 Gb
    /usr = 10 Gb
    /var = 10 Gb
    /export=remaining drive space.
    I'm I missing something obvious?
    thanks

There should be more information in the install log about why the one package failed. If you search for the package name in the log you should be able find it. Then that might help determine whether the package can be installed on its own, possibly fixing your reboot issue.

  • How to Add a Physical Interface After Installation in Solaris 10

How to Add a Physical Interface After Installation in Solaris 10
    Hi Java Specialist,
I am trying to setup a network interface with the following steps on a new fresh Solaris 10 installation using the instruction titled How to Add a Physical Interface After Installation in Solaris 10 3/05 ONLY from http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19253-01/816-4554/esxhb/index.html:
    1. # ifconfig lo0 plumb up
    2. # ifconfig lo0 10.56.8.101 netmask 255.255.240.0. This was the working Windows DHCP environment prior to installing Solaris
    10 on top of it.
    3. # Added saturn to /etc/hostname.lo0.
    4. # Added 10.56.8.101 to /etc/inet/hosts
    5. # Added 10.56.0.0     255.255.240.0 to /etc/inet/netmasks
    6.# reboot
However, the following errors kept recurring:
svcs –xv …. unable to qualify my own domain name,
    failed with exit status 69.
Any idea on what other steps have I missed? I was hoping to only do step 3 – 6 for the change to apply permanently.
    Many thanks,
    Jack

Hi Java Specialist,... in a Solaris forum?
    1. # ifconfig lo0 plumb upThe loopback connection (your lo0)is NOT a physical interface. There are no hardware components for it. Nor can I think of any reason why it should ever be anything other than the default 127.0.0.1
Use your favorite Internet search site (such as Google, Bing, Yahoo) to learn more about it.
    2. # ifconfig lo0 10.56.8.101 netmask 255.255.240.0. This was the working Windows DHCP environment ...I have no idea how a nonexistent software construct gets a DHCP address in a MS Operating System, unless you are confusing this with the "Microsoft Loopback Adapter" which is an utterly different concept. Again, go see what Google tells you.
    <br>
    <br>
    <br>
... completely unrelated to configuring an IP...
unable to qualify my own domain nameAgain, search the Internet or even search these forums with that string of words.
Go back through your two most recent posts and read the responses again.
They seem to both be on the same topic as this new one -- configuring an IP on something.
How to initialize new IP address on secondary interface permanently
How to change IP address permanently on Solaris 10
When you've done all that, then come back and tell us what you are actually trying to do.

  • BI Publisher Installation in Solaris 10 x86 failing.

    Hello all,
I am trying to install BI Publisher on Solaris 10. During the pre-requisites check, it fails for Checking OS recommended patches, 127111-02 and 137111-04. If I ignore and continue, then the Distributing Repository is failing throwing the error
Error executing nqudmlexec - return code: 1stdout:
    stderr:
How can I solve the issue.
    Please help its urgent.
    Thank you
    Cheers
    Ash

    Hello All,
Finally the installation got finished. The two things that held me for long are these
    1) Operating System required Patches showing the wrong patch number. While you run the installer for the OBIEE 11g, during the pre-requisites check it failed for the fore said item. I had to run a lot for the answer.
The answer was pretty simple, the patch number shown by the installer was wrong (127111-02, 137111-04) These two patches are for the Solaris SPARC OS. Weirdly I was running the installation on a Intel Solaris VM. The respective patches for Intel Solaris 10 are 127112-02 and 137112-04, so moral of the story is ensure that these patches are in and ignore the failure message click NEXT
    2) Now getting back to the error message posted here "Error executing nqudmlexec - return code: 1stdout:" This is because the LOCALE was not set to UTF-8
    Steps to set the locale
    i) ensure that UTF-8 is installed in you machine "localeadm -a en_US.UTF-8 -d /cdrom/cdrom0/Solaris_10/Product"
ii) can do a listing using locale -a to make sure that UTF-8 is in.
iii) make sure that the following packages are in "pkgadd SUNWi1cs SUNWi15cs SUNWnamos"
iv) set the LANG variable "export LANG=UTF-8"
And I had a smooth run. :) The pain was over...

Can you install Oracle 9i on Solaris Intel ? 32 / 64 bit

    Hello dear people,
I'm trying to install the 9i Database for Sun SPARC (32-bit) on an Intel machine with Solaris 8 running. I followed all steps of the installation documentation, but when I try to execute the runInstaller programm, I get always the following error:

Can you tell me, which is actually the terminal Release for Intel Solaris? I were very pleased.

  • RFC SDK support on solaris-intel?

I have some questions about the “C”  SAP RFC SDK. I cannot seem to find a complete list of supported UNIX platforms.
What is the current version of the “C” RFC SDK?
Is it supported on the solaris intel platform?
I notice that the dynamic version of the RFC library (rfc32.dll)  is installed with SAP Netweaver on Windows.  Is the equivalent dynamically loaded library (i.e. librfc.so) always included with a SAP installation on UNIX as well?  Does this mean that the static libraries provided in the RFC SDK are no longer required to build a client RFC application, since a client application can dynamically load the run-time library instead?

We don't certify Solaris on NT.
You can find this information on platform support page.

    Dear all,
I have to do a installation of OAS on Solaris Intel machine.. Sunfire 440. I can only find the below installation guide on oracle.com. I can find only for Solaris Operating System (SPARC 64-Bit) and not intel .. can anyone guide me with this ?

You should follow the doc that you found for solaris, the thing is that the patches and fixes for this that you would found are for the PARISC server, if you can get the same patches and fixes for your intel server, use them and if you can't start the installation process, try to run installer like runInstaller.sh -ignoresysprereqs.
    Greetings.

  • A7V133 reboot during installation :-(

    Dear,
During installation my A7V133 with 3C905-C an NVIDIA TNT 64 reboots before installation
even starts. I could not read the printed message since the reboot proces is to fast.
All my devices are in the supported list Solaris 8 10/01.
Has anyone an explanation for this ?
Could this have somthing to do with the PCI interrupt charing ?
Hoping to receive some positive advice, I meanwhile remain,
    P. Pelgrims
P.S. Installing Solaris 8 10/1 on VMWARE for Linux works fine but VMWARE emutates
and virtual networkcard and could offer only 640x480 Xterm !

    Hi Pelgrims,
May be problem with PCI interrupts sharing violation with your 3Com NIC card and TNT VGA card. So remove your NIC card from your system and try to do Solaris installation.
    Hope it helps.
