Reboot Necessary for Airport Disk after Sleep

Anytime one of the computers on the network sleeps, it loses its conneection with the Airport Disk (250GB LaCie), Although the disk appears in the Menu bar icon, attempting to re-connect generates an error message about bad ID and/or Log-in disabled.
Sometimes this is resolved by rebooting the machine, other times by rebooting the AEBS.
I suspect I'm not the only one, but I wonder if Apple is aware of yet another flaw in the new AEBS.

I'm not aware that you can configure them to spin down. However this might be a good point.
Not that you can't configure them, but that I am not aware. I need around 5 Tb of storage for my home movies and back ups. This has not changed for some considerable time. Although my collection continues to grow, keeping mpeg4's instead of mpeg2's has saved me space. Not wanting to stray too far from the point, the point I am trying to make is I haven't bought any external storage for 2 or 3 years due to reliability, which may comfort you preceeding a LaCie purchase.
The drive I have attached as an airdisk is one that was freed up by the process I have told you about and is therefore quite old. it is a 500 Gb Triple interface (USB/FW/FW800). It does its job but does become disconnected from the extreme at semi regular intervals.
Personally I think this is because it is actually 2 x 250 Gb drives in one enclosure controlled by a RAID chipset. Apple does have info dotted about that says RAID's don't work. Pesrsonally I think it depends a lot on what level RAID, I think some won't work, some will and some have intermittent problems (I think mine is the later)

  • Mail not checking for new mail after sleep

Mail will not check for new mail when waking from sleep unless I log off and back on first. I tried quitting Mail, which works once in a while. I tried putting all Accounts back online, which works occasionally. But most often nothing works except logging off. Must I change to another mail program, or is there a better solution.

After trying various solutions, I found that the fault was not with Apple Mail or my iMac but with Airport taking time to warm up after sleep. I switched to an Ethernet connection instead and it works fine now

  • Keeps on asking for "repair disk" after i moved the application to a folder

Hello, I moved a .app to a folder then whenever i open the app it ask for "repair disk" but when i move it back where it was originally installed, it doesn't have that. is there a way so i can leave that app in the folder and the "repair disk" stuff wont pop up? Also, is someone wlling to give me the icon folder for Adobe Premium CS3 please?

Some apps don't like to be moved - especially if they were installed using an installer program.
If you want to organize your apps, it's best to leave them all where they are in /Applications folder, and create aliases to them. Then organize the aliases into custom folders.

  • Time Machine stuck at "Looking for backup disk" after installing Windows 8 via Boot Camp

I've been backing up via Time Machine to an external USB drive and it's been working fine. I recenty installed Windows 8 via Boot Camp and now TM gets stuck forever at "Looking for backup disk...".
I've tried the following, to no avail:
Using "Select Disk" in TM preferences to re-select the disk
    Deleting /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
    Running system maintenance via Onyx
    Resetting PRAM
Formatting the drive and setting it up for TM backups again
The Boot Camp partition is on the same drive as OS X (on a 180GB Intel 330 series SSD). During the Windows installation I re-formatted the partition as NTFS.
If I start OS X in Safe Boot mode, TM backups work. In Safe Boot mode, the NTFS partition isn't loaded so I suspect it has something to do with this. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I installed Paragon NTFS for Mac and it started working all of a sudden.

  • Airport always asks for my password after sleep or reboot. Why?

Whenever my computer either reboots, or wakes from sleep, I always have to re-enter my AirPort network name (since I disabled SSID broadcast) and password.
I tried re-installing the whole system from scratch, and it didn't work. Nor did deleting the system keychain (where the password is stored) and creating a new one.
What's weird is, in Keychain Access, the airport password is marked as 'Confirm before allowing access'. I tried to change this so it wouldn't do that, but it will not accept my keychain password! (I know it's the same as my admin password and I have never changed it)

    Hi Babaganoosh,
What's weird is, in Keychain Access, the airport
password is marked as 'Confirm before allowing
access'. I tried to change this so it wouldn't do
that, but it will not accept my keychain password! (I
know it's the same as my admin password and I have
    never changed it)
I'm not sure that this setting has anything to do with your problem, as I think that has something to do with the access to the "AirPort" station configuration file - and no to the networks itselves - as I would guess that these setting are in the "config" files for your base-station.
I AirPort I guess that you have marked "Create a closed network" and then set a "password" ? (Using AirPort Adm application?).
I have myself changed our network at home to a closed network with 3 Mac's and one Win and a printer (on AirportExpress) and even a PC-laptops, and they all are able to connect after entering the new name I gave the network and the "network" password.
I understand that you have tried to re-install, but have you used the Apple repair "Disk Utility"? (some of these settings are hidden deep inside the system)? Or the "Maintenance" application (freee-ware)?
    Good luck

  • Unable to open configuration for Airport Express after update 5.3.1

I can still reconfigure my Airport Express unit using the old version of the Airport Admin Utility.app version 4.2 under OS 10.4.11 that remained after the update. But the new AirPort Base Station 2008-001 update version 5.3.1 for Tiger will not allow me to access the configuration. It comes back with an error even though the Airport Express unit is recognized by the new software. The message reads: "An error occurred while reading the configuration".
Why won't the new version work? I tried rebooting the Airport Express unit and even unplugged it for 60 seconds. This did not help.
About 6 months ago, I had to revert to an older version of the firmware to stabilize the system to version 6.1.1.
Airport has really been touchy. And each update of the OS does not seem to help.

    Hi,
My old Saucer Expresses work with Firmware 5.6, though it wants to update them to 5.7.
Does it ask for the Password/Keychain usage? If not, might trash that Keychain... or Factory reset it too.
    Might just try the latest...

  • Lost Airport Connection after sleep/shutdown

    Hi there,
I have spent a goodly part of this weekend trying to solve this problem, the time has now come to seek assistance from someone who might know what they are doing!
I have an Airport Extreme Base Station, it is connected to an ADSL ethernet router and then to the ADSL phone line. My G5 connects directly to the router via ethernet. My G3 iBook has an airport card and, sometimes anyway, connects to the internet via the base station.
The problem I have been having is that whenever the iBook goes to sleep it loses its Airport connection and to get it back again takes forever switching Airport on and off, going into Internet connect, changing around the TCP/IP settings etc. I eventually get the connection back (with the original settings), but it's becoming a real pain. The same thing happens after a restart or shutdown, it doesn't automatically connect to Airport and takes forever to get it to. A lot of the time the Base Station doesn't show up as an available network, then all of a sudden it will after various tweakings.
I have checked the airport card and it is positioned correctly. The fact that it occassionally recognises the Base Station makes me think also that the card is OK. So my question is, how can I keep the darn thing connected? I feel there is something simple I am missing.
Incidently, this began happening after I had set it up to print through the Base Station, that only worked for a short period of time. I have since get rid of all those settings.
Hope I have given enough information.
    Cheers

  • MacBook Pro (2010) hanging for 30 seconds after sleep

I have a 13" MacBook Pro (2010), which I've owned since June. When I got it, I installed the 640GB Samsung HDD that I had in my previous 15" MacBook Pro (I also reinstalled OS X on the drive and restored my data from a backup)
The problem is that when I open the lid and wake it from sleep, the display turns on and shows the desktop, but the computer is unresponsive for about 30 seconds. That is, the mouse cursor isn't there and no keyboard inputs are recognised. After 30 seconds or so, the mouse cursor appears and it's back to normal again.
I've tried making a new user account and the problem remains with that, and I've also installed 10.6 again and restored my data, and I still have the problem.
Could it be anything to do with the 640GB HDD, even though it worked absolutely fine with my 15" MBP? Or is there anything else I can try?
    Many thanks!

You can try resetting and PRAM

does the problem persist? Then Reboot?

  • Maximum external Hard Drive size for Airport Disk?

Is there a maximum size for the hard drive that's being connected to the USB port on the new Airport Extremes?
Or will it support up to the maximum that's allowed by the USB chipset?

Since it allows standard USB hard drives to connect, the limitation should have nothing to do with USB or the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). The limitation should only be with the IDE/ATA disk controller within the USB enclosure.

  • Leopard (10.5.2) just rebooted spontaneously being woken up after sleep

I thought I had seen it all with Leopard, and then it just spontaneously rebooted when I woke it up from sleep. No applications open, just an empty OS X.
I think we all can agree that Mac OS X Leopard (in all 10.5.* encarnations) is the worst Apple ever produced. Even worse than OS9 or whatever it was called.
Steve Jobs and his programmers should be ashamed of themselves really. I even started wondering why Steve hasn't fired all the incompetent programmers working on Leopard yet. Everybody knows how fond he is of fireing people. The probable reason he didn't fire all incompetent Leopard programmers most likely is that if he did that, there wouldn't be any programmers left at Apple.
Congratulations people, for making the worst piece of software in the history of Apple software.

I have a brand new dual quad Mac Pro that has been exhibiting this bug for over a week. Following AppleCare's suggestion, I did an install and archive to get back to virgin status and have spend dozens of hours trying different things to track down this issue.
I was disappointed with the lack of acknowledgement of the problem by AppleCare, even though 100's of people on various chat lists are talking about this and other instabilities.
It indeed seems a Leopard issue ... and yet some people with seemingly identical machines do not experience the problem. So, then you wonder if it is hardware, or a combination.
When the reboot happens, there are no log entries as normally happen with sleep...no record of the computer ever going to sleep. Very odd.
As my attempt to switch from PC to Mac, I'm very disappointed with quality control and support from Apple. Even Microsoft (forgive me) eventually puts up a Knowledgebase article. But, with Apple producing both the hardware AND software, it is inexcusable to me for them to not have any kinds of announcements letting people know that they are aware of this and other Leopard problems and that they're working on them. This issue has been talked about for quite some time with nothing from Apple.
Do I return my machine before my 14 days are up? Or do I hang on with anticipation of a fix from Apple? At this point, I don't find Apple any less 'evil' than Microsoft...

  • Why do I have to "set up" Airport Connect. after "sleep" or logging off?

I installed OS 10.5.4 a couple of months ago. Ever since then each time I log on to the internet or just get my mail (from Apple Mail) I get a message that I'm not connected. I then have to punch a multitude of buttons to get on again. I've found no help in any sources I've been to. We're cable with a router and an ethernet on our office computer. I haven't installed Leopard on it--I'm afraid of the problems I'll have. It's ethernet.
It's the airport MacBook that's having the log on problems. Any help from anyone?
P.S. I've assigned our NetGear to be the first on the list of connections. (I have several other coffee shop type places in the list as well.) So, the problem is coming from somewhere else in the OS system. Thanks!

  • Is password security necessary for AirPort with Mac local address mode set?

    Hi,
I use the Mac local access mode on my airport network and provide all Mac address that are allowed on my network. Since I specifically specify what computers are allowed on my network, why would I need to use some security protocol like WPA? Is there a risk of Mac address hijacking?
    Thanks.

Hello ScootInSD. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Since I specifically specify what computers are allowed on my network, why would I need to use some security protocol like WPA? Is there a risk of Mac address hijacking?
Yes, MAC addresses can easily be "sniffed" and spoofed so using MAC address filtering will only thwart the most casual of network hijackers. Currently only the use of wireless encryption, either WPA or WPA2 with the stronger CCMP/AES cryptographic encryption with a strong non-dictionary password can really provide security.

  • What are the settings for airport disk

I am confused about the TC settings. It seems that there is a TC name and password, but how do I access any disks attached to TC and how do I assign the disk to different users. Whats the best way to set it up, using "Access DIsk"? And the "by Account" (what does that mean), by disk password?

do your connected disks show up in the same place as they would if you plugged them in directly?
I can only access mine through the Shared Devices dropdown menu under my time Capsule. They don't "mount" like they normally do.

  • ML loses network backup disk after reboot or sleep

I have two laptops using time machine to backup over the local network to a disk directly connected to a desktop mac.  The desktop also backs up to the same disk quite successfully.   Since upgradeing everything to Mountain Lion (10.8.1) the laptops keep losing access to the backup disk after sleeping or rebooting. Interestingly, they can autmatically find the backup IF I "enter time machine".  But they never find it unless, after sleeping, I reselect the disk in the time machine preferences.
    Any ideas?

  • Airport network unavailable after Sleep

My previous Airport (802.11g) network was always automatically on after Sleep or Restart.
My new Airport (802.11n) now wants to search for the network after sleep. I have just one home network, WPA2 security, with Guest disabled, using Airport Utility 5.5.1.
    Any ideas about this annoyance?
Also, in the Wireless Network Options, what does the "WPA Group Key Timeout" refer to? It's default is set to 1 hour, with no option to be off. Is this part of the problem?
    Thanks, Ron

Not sure about your second question, but I have the same problem as your first, although it doesn't happen everytimemy MBP comes out of sleep. I find that disabling then re-enabling AirPort (from the AitPort icon in the menu bar) makes it re-connect. Do you have your SSID hidden? I do, and suspect that may be the reason - although I've never been bothered enough to test it
